An Extra Helping of the Blue Plate Special : Lara Hope & The Ark-Tones “Luckiest Girl In Town”

From Kingston, NY, “Rockabilly, Roots Rock n’ Roll, Rhythm & Blues Outfit” Lara Hope and the Ark-Tones visited the Blue Plate Special stage. They were named the “Best Up-And-Coming band in 2015” by Hudson Valley Magazine, and nominated for “Best Rockabilly Female” at the 2016 Ameripolitan Music Awards. “Luck Maker”, the band’s first album, is in regular rotation here at WDVX, and we were excited to hear that Lara Hope and the Ark-Tones are headed back into the studio this December. The Ark-Tones get their name from the combination of Lara’s former Rockabilly band The Champtones, and upright bassist Matt’s international Psychobilly act The Arkhams. The band names are not the only merging going on, as Lara and Matt got married about a year ago. That leads us to the tune in this video, “Luckiest Girl In The World”, which was a wedding gift from Lara to Matt! An Extra Helping of the Blue Plate Special : Emily Ann Roberts “Simple”

Emily Ann Roberts and Zach Seabaugh visited the Blue Plate Special and delighted the audience by taking turns doing their own music. Emily Ann sang an original tune, “Simple”, that she co-wrote. She told us that it is … “probably my favorite one that I’ve written so far”. You can visit Emily Ann’s website at http://www.emilyannroberts.com/ and Zach’s website at http://www.zachseabaugh.com/

An Extra Helping of the Blue Plate Special : Guy Marshall “John Wayne”

Guy Marshall is an Americana band from right here in East Tennessee that has rapidly gained a dedicated following, as well as rave reviews from the music press. Husband and wife team Adam and Serrenna McNulty make up the core of Guy Marshall, and regularly do shows with a cast of talented friends. Guy Marshall was Adam McNulty’s grandfather, and according to the band, Guy lived in a different America, and Adam writes songs of a time in which family and honor meant more. His songs hold stories inspired by Appalachian life, old country music, as well as true family stories. Their 2015 debut album is called “The Depression Blues”, and during this visit to the Blue Plate Special stage, Guy Marshall introduced a couple of brand new tunes, including this one, “John Wayne”. Helping out on fiddle (also from East Tennessee) is Frank Bronson – one of the talented friends referred to earlier. Find out more about Guy Marshall on their website at http://www.guymarshall.net/

Guy Marshall will be playing the All Day Blue Plate on March 3rd! We will have live music from noon until 8pm at the Knoxville Visitor’s Center! Come out and check out the newly remodeled Visitor Stage and celebrate the return of the Blue Plate Special.

Ray Wylie Hubbard at the SOLD OUT WDVX-Travaganza 10/21!

ray wylie 2

When it comes to down ’n’ dirty roots ’n’ roll, nobody in the wide world of Americana music today does it better than Ray Wylie Hubbard. From his humble beginnings as an Oklahoma folkie in the ’60s to his wild ride through the ’70s progressive country movement, and onward through the honky-tonk fog of the ’80s to his sobriety-empowered comeback as a songwriter’s songwriter in the ’90s, Hubbard was already a bona fide legend by the time he really found his groove right at the turn of the 21st century. Hubbard is perhaps best known as the writer of songs separated by three decades: “Up Against the Wall, Redneck Mother,” made famous by fellow Texan Jerry Jeff Walker, and “Snake Farm,” which never fails to get live audiences dancing.

Ray Wylie Hubbard’s latest album is the ‘Ruffians Misfortune’ which was released last year. Check out Ray performing “Stone Blind Horses” from that album.

We cannot wait to see Ray Wylie Hubbard and special guest Elizabeth Cook perform at this year’s WDVX-Travaganza! This will truly be a night to remember and it would not be possible without the support of our presenting sponsor LHP Capital!

Elizabeth Cook at the SOLD OUT WDVX-Travaganza 10/21!

Elizabeth cook 2

Elizabeth Cook is joining us this Friday night for the WDVX-Travaganza! Her latest album, ‘Exodus of Venus’ was released on June 17th of this year. This video features the album’s title track:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h6Am4klts-s&feature=youtu.be

Her last album ‘Welder’ was released in 2010. During the last six years Elizabeth Cook has experienced many trials and tribulations. Dealing with the loss of loved ones, divorce, and a fire at her family’s homestead, Elizabeth was able emerge from the chaos and pour her heart into the eleven tracks that make up, ‘Exodus of Venus’. Jewly Hight of NPR states, “Listening to this batch of 11 new songs, it’s as if she’s emerged from a dark night of the soul and felt the need to push against the limits of her expression, stretching her range from novelistic narrative to richly impressionistic sensual and spiritual imagery and immersing her performances in the dusky, blues-inflected mood-setting of her current guitarist-producer, Dexter Green.” Not only did ‘Exodus of Venus’ receive great reviews, it also did very well on the Americana Music Association Charts!

WDVX’s New Events Coordinator : Megan Lange

11054524_10203814962683623_5348591713793650700_o

WDVX is proud to announce that Megan Lange is our new events coordinator.

Megan Lange grew up in Lenoir City, TN and attended the University of Tennessee – Knoxville, graduating with a degree in Technical Writing and Business Editing. Prior to her position at WDVX, she worked as concert producer and promoter at the Square Room in Market Square, event producer for several local and regional events, and freelance marketing/web consultant.

When it comes to passions, Megan has a few – but her three primary passions are music, people, and downtown Knoxville (making this position the perfect combination). She is so excited to join the WDVX team and looks forward to working with the incredible staff, board, and volunteers to continue supporting the Knoxville community and the local arts movement, especially WDVX!

In her spare time, Megan leads her jazz band (Megan and her Goody Goodies), cooks fancy-schmancy food without recipes, swing dances with the Knoxville Swing Dance Association, and prowls estate sales looking for vintage clothes. If you see her out at a WDVX event, be sure to say hello!

Blackhorse Pub and Brewery

img_8247

Blackhorse Pub and Brewery is sponsoring the WDVX-Travaganza! There will be several different styles of their brews available at the event! In 1992, the Blackhorse Pub and Brewery opened in Historic Downtown Clarksville. Their goal then, as now was to provide a neighborhood gathering place for friends and families.

A second location was opened in Knoxville in Western Plaza, where Bearden meets Sequoyah Hills and near The University of Tennessee. Blackhorse strives to provide the food, service, and atmosphere that would make people want to come back. They offer gourmet pizza, steaks & pastas, salad & sandwiches, as well as Brunch on Saturday and Sunday.

Their handcrafted ales are brewed to perfection on site. They are committed to providing the freshest, finest beer possible. Here are some of the brews that Blackhorse offers:

BLACKHORSE ALE

A fine American light ale. This is their lightest beer in terms of color and flavor.

BARNSTORMER RED ALE

Their flagship beer! This smooth traditional red ale uses Hallertau hops to accompany its sweet round finish.

McGEE’S PALE ALE

They use a blend of Munich Malt and two row barley as a base and create an assertive taste by adding cluster hops. Named in honor of their first brewer: Cheers Travis McGee!

COALMINER’S STOUT

Made in the tradition of the great stouts of England and Ireland, this stout is semi-dry and opaque in color

VANILLA CREAM ALE

This creamy vanilla ale is a wonderful combination of Vienna Malt, American two row and natural vanilla bean.
