SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special - 5/20 - Rees Shad
DESCRIPTION:Rees Shad has been crafting musical narratives across decades \nIn the rich tapestry of Americana music\, few artists have woven stories as intricate and compelling as Rees Shad. Since his 1994 debut “Anderson\, Ohio”\, Shad has been on a relentless quest to push the boundaries of musical storytelling\, earning him a reputation as not just a songwriter\, but a true architect of narratives in the world of contemporary folk and Americana. \nThe Evolution of a Storyteller \nWith a catalog spanning an impressive 16 solo albums over three decades\, Shad’s journey is a testament to his unwavering commitment to artistic growth. Each release serves as a chapter in his ongoing exploration of sound\, story\, and the human experience. From the early days when critics dubbed him a “wordsmith to watch\,” to his current status as a celebratedAmericana artist\, Shad’s evolution has been nothing short of remarkable. \nThe Art of Musical World-Building \nWhat sets Shad apart is his unique approach to composition. “I often work by assigning myself compositional parameters\,” he explains. This method has led to a diverse body of work\, each album a distinct world unto itself. Whether it’s crafting story songs in the style of particular writers\, responding to specific production styles\, or creating overarching narrative arcs\, Shad’s process is more akin to that of a novelist or filmmaker than a traditional songwriter. \nThe Galahad Blues: A Masterpiece of Reimagination \nShad’s latest offering\, *The Galahad Blues*\, exemplifies his innovative spirit. This ambitious project reimagines the Knights of the Round Table as 1940s Chicago gangsters\, with King Arthur’s Camelot transformed into a smoky nightclub. “The project has involved me wordsmithing on a whole different level\,” Shad notes\, highlighting his deep dive into the hipster language of the 1930s and ’40s. \nThe album showcases Shad’s ability to blend influences seamlessly\, drawing inspiration from American Songbook writers like Cole Porter and the Gershwins while maintaining his distinct voice. The result is a cinematic experience that transports listeners to a world where honor among thieves is explored through riveting melodies and dramatic arrangements. \nCollaborative Spirit and Musical Mastery \nWhile Shad’s vision drives his projects\, he’s no lone wolf. *The Galahad Blues* features his band\, The Conversations (Jeff Link on bass\, Rob ‘Bobby K’ Kovacs on drums\, Carlos Valdez on percussion)\, alongside an impressive roster of guest musicians\, including Larry Campbell (Bob Dylan\, Paul Simon) and Ira Coleman (Herbie Hancock\, Sting). This collaborative approach adds depth and texture to Shad’s already rich sonic landscapes.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special - 5/17 - D Boone Pitman
DESCRIPTION:Pittman’s musical story begins in the early 1970s at the grand opening of the local town drug store. His late father\, from whom Pittman would later inherit his trademark Martin D-28 acoustic guitar\, basically forced him to sing a Johnny Cash song\, much to the delight of the crowd that had gathered there. Pittman\, though he immediately received enthusiastic accolades and even tips\, wasn’t havin’ it. “I hated it\,” he recalls\, “but I In my room\, I’m playing air guitar and pretending to be Elvis\, but to do it in public as a kid was really tough. It wasn’t that I struggled doing it\, it was just more the fact that I was being made to do something. That ended up driving me into a phase where I refused to sing out in public at all.” Even going to a Johnny Cash concert at the age of 5 with his mother wasn’t enough to lure Pittman back into the spotlight\, and transcribing the lyrics to hit songs off 45s for his father didn’t quite do the trick either—but it did lay the groundwork for the lyrical depth and flair that Pittman showed so effortlessly right off the bat with his 2019 debut Bluegrass American Dream. “My dad would pay me a dollar a song to sit down and figure the words out for him\,” Pittman chuckles. “I have to really question how good I was at it because I was so young\, but I guess he was able to use it. Who knows how many of the lines I’d get right at the end of the day\, but I think that’s when I got my first appreciation for lyrics.” “Back when I was 7 or 8\,” he continues\, “country rock was really big\, and ‘Lyin’ Eyes’ by The Eagles was a big hit. I remember that song specifically because there were so many verses in it. Even at that age\, I could appreciate the darkness behind the cheating and the lying and everything in that song.” \nhttps://youtu.be/v6-c5Vrm1UE?si=-1T2FULAWwJR3yC4

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special - 5/15 - Gabe Lee
DESCRIPTION:Equal parts classic songwriter and modern-day storyteller\, Gabe Lee has built his own bridge between country\, folk and rock. Lee has been collecting stories for years\, both onstage and off. “I used to bartend\,” says the Nashville-based songwriter\, “which means I was also a cheap therapist for whomever happened to be sitting on the barstool. Whether they were there to celebrate or drink away their problems\, I heard about whatever they were going through. It was my job to have that face-to-face interaction — that connection. Being a full-time musician isn’t much different.” \nWith critically-acclaimed albums like 2019’s farmland\, 2020’s Honky-Tonk Hell\, and 2022’s The Hometown Kid\, Lee created that connection by delivering his own stories to an ever-growing audience. His fourth record\, Drink the River\, takes a different approach. This time\, Lee isn’t offering listeners a peek into his internal world; he’s holding up a mirror to reflect their own. \nStorytelling has been an anchor of Lee’s music since the very beginning. Raised by Taiwanese parents in Nashville\, TN\, he left home during his teenage years and headed to Indiana\, where he obtained college degrees in literature and journalism. Lee launched his career as a genre-bending musician after returning to Tennessee\, quickly progressing from dive bar gigs to high-profile opening slots (including shows with Jason Isbell\, Los Lobos\, and other artists who\, like him\, blurred the lines between roots-rock\, country\, and other forms of American folk music) to his own headlining shows. Throughout it all\, he drew upon the narrative skills he’d sharpened as a student. If albums like Honky-Tonk Hell and The Hometown Kid often unfolded like autobiographical entries from his road journal\, then Drink the River shows an even broader range of his storytelling abilities. Lee isn’t just writing songs about himself; he’s writing songs about all of us. And maybe\, in doing so\, he can bring us a little closer together.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special - 5/14 - Erik Buell / Laura Jane Vincent
DESCRIPTION:Erik Buell\, of motorcycle fame\, left the world of motorcycles a number of years ago to devote full time to music. \nFrom the hard rock swagger era of the “Anthem” album on Rat Pak Records\, his music has moved to a different place. \nThe “Dust Settles” album of 2024 showed a unique and personal blend of Americana\, rock and country. As a new independent artist in these genres\, “You’re Not Alone…” charting on Americana radio shortly after release was a validation of the appeal of this honesty to audiences. \nIn the coming album “Ride Free” this personal style is even stronger. All core tracks were recorded in one day\, so there is a vibrant live feel to the album. From the joy of being young to the pain of lost love to reflections on the hardships of Appalachian life\, the songs here are personal and heartfelt. \nIn Erik’s words: \n“Some years ago it became clear I had done everything I wanted in the motorcycle world\, and I found myself taking my second love of music to being number one\, mostly driven by songs I needed to write. \nBecause motorcycling was only part of a pretty crazy life…one lasting a lot longer than it probably should have\, given choices made! \nAnd like many folks\, life hasn’t been easy\, and these songs come from the range of joy and despair in all those years\, and from relating to what others have experienced.” \n \nFrom Glendon\, North Carolina Laura Jane Vincentwill also join us.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special - 5/13 - Redd and the Paper Flowers
DESCRIPTION:Redd Daugherty began as a solo artist during the 2020 pandemic\, while teaching high school English at L&N STEM Academy in Knoxville\, TN. During this time\, she appeared on Season 19 of American Idol; released her first\, solo album Monsters & Mothers; quit teaching to pursue music full time; and began working alongside her mentor and close friend\, Adam Ivy. \nRedd met members Gavin Gregg\, Katie Adams\, and Colleen d’Alelio through friends and at open mics. The group quickly realized they had similar goals and began making and playing music together almost immediately. SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special - 5/10 - UT Appalachian Strings
DESCRIPTION:About UT Appalachian Strings\nUT musicology faculty and local Knoxville musician\, Sean McCollough\, created the first-ever UT Appalachian string-band ensemble in the spring semester of 2022. By spring of 2023\, one student band had grown into two. The two current bands play mostly bluegrass – though one of them includes some modern Americana songs in their repertory. Sean’s hope is that there may be enough interest in the future to also have an old-time band\, an Americana band and perhaps even a country band. If you are a UT student and are interested in joining one of the bands\, email Sean at sean@utk.edu. \nhttps://youtu.be/2jDPJyIjtm0?si=gNqdAWGgXgiyLig-

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special - 5/8 - Jefferson Thomas / The Roamers
DESCRIPTION:With enough rough edges to call it rock n roll and enough dusty twang to call it country\, The Roamers embrace every genre of American music they can put their ears on. Their music is a sonic journey through the highways and byways of American culture\, embracing the roaming spirit and adventurous freedom that defines the open road.Equally at home kicking up boots in a naugahyde booth at the local dive bar or tearing up the asphalt on a two-lane headed out of town\, The Roamers will kick start the good times and get you out of your seat. Plug in\, let’s go! \nBand leader Matt Rice has been a steady fan and performer of live music in the Los Angeles area for years. In a delirious moment of clarity\, he busted out of the doldrums of dead end desk jobs in 2022 and slammed the door behind him. With just enough bravery to dream of independence and creativity\, and just enough audacity to try it\, Matt formed the Roamers in 2023 and he hasn’t looked back. The Roamers are dead serious about good-time live music and their first album comes out in 2024. \n \nJefferson Thomas\, a complete scrapbook of American influence; heartfelt songs written in motel parking lots; observations of the American mindset and landscape; country-tinged bourbon and beer-soaked blues. He switches from guitar to piano for Hometown Hotel and All I Ever Wanted from the ‘Play Hurt’ album\, but it is the blues guitar work that works the best\, especially in the highly personalised covers of The Beatles’ Get Back and Hendrix’s Red House. All the self-penned songs (including the hit Jacksonville) sit comfortably amidst such distinguished company.” \nhttps://youtu.be/zzNRH-ca1sU?si=hA4JHCItiDP6ZwoM \n

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special - 5/6 - Leslie Jordan
DESCRIPTION:After comprising one-half of the Grammy-Nominated All Sons & Daughters from 2010-2018\, Nashville-based artist\, Leslie Jordan has spent the last seven years writing for and investing in other artists. She has done this primarily through “The Fold\,” a non-profit she co-founded in 2017 as a creative community for artists in all genres and walks of life to find safety and belonging through creative writing workshops and retreats. It was that same year when Leslie fostered the desire to return to her Americana roots and began to conceptualize her next album\, adapting the lost writings & poetry of her mother’s estranged father who passed away in 1995. Leslie has always been a songwriter and a storyteller\, but after combing through decades of her grandfather’s words\, she now knows why it courses through her veins. Although Leslie is no stranger to the music\, this album marks her debut endeavor into the Folk/Americana world.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special - 5/5 - Tanner Burch & The Hill Hippies / The Faux Paws
DESCRIPTION:The Faux Paws have a problem. They’re a triangle band in a land of circles. Musically impossible to describe\, they don’t even fit into todays often hyphenated-genre world. No fan\, industry expert\, nor member of the band can seem to sum up this band’s sound in any kind of marketable way. They continue to remain a singularly unique outfit in the acoustic music community\, always on the fringes\, always memorable and with an increasing number of die-hard fans who feel like they’ve uncovered a secret. \nIs it bluegrass? Not usually. Old-time? Occasionally. Is it Celtic? Can’t quite say that. Is it Folk? Americana? Jazz? Singer-songwriter? None of the above\, but members of the Paws have deep ties to all of these traditions and blend their elements effortlessly to serve whatever musical idea is being presented. \nSo what can we say? This band takes risks. They’re dynamic\, exciting\, sincere\, irreverent\, infectious\, and surprising. They move deftly between moods\, influences and instruments but always maintaining a “groove” that pulses through the music like a heartbeat (you may not always be aware it’s there but it gives the thing life). \nA Faux Paws live show is an explosive roller coaster ride that brings the audience along. Virtuosity on the fiddle\, mandolin\, guitar and saxophone\, sure\, but also vulnerability\, personal lyrics\, tight 3-part brother harmonies\, playful interplay\, intricately arranged details and soaring improvisations. \nAccording to FolkAlley.com its Trad. Their self-titled 2021 release was named one of the 10 Best Trad albums of the year from around the world. With the considerable success and praise the band has seen since coming out of the pandemic the Paws decided to add long-time friend and collaborator Zoe Guigueno (Fish & Bird\, Della Mae) to their touring outfit on upright bass whenever possible. Zoe only deepens the group’s already massive sound while freeing each member up for more creative expression on their various instruments. \nNeed more? Well a few points people usually notice: the saxophone that behaves in ways they’ve never heard. An oft-heard ‘compliment’ to Grammy nominated multi-instrumentalist Chris Miller is “I thought I was going to hate the saxophone!” Fiddle-phenom Noah gets most of the attention on his feet – due to his unique approach to his Quebecois-style foot-percussion he’s developed. Combined with his jaw-dropping array of percussive chopping elements on the fiddle he contains the sound of a full band on his own. Except its his brother Andrew carefully executing complimentary chords and riffs on the guitar that makes Noah’s sound what it is. \nBut spending too many words talking about this stuff detracts from the fact that it’s the original songs – and heart – that keep folks coming back for more year after year. In the band’s 12th year they returned to the studio and emerged with an EP showcasing a huge amount of music in a 5-track sampler. The live-energy of the newly minted quartet is on full display\, with very little added. The Backburner EP was released in April 2023 and reached Billboard’s Top 10 Bluegrass Albums Chart. Without stopping to catch their breath\, the band returned to the studio in 2024 and their second full-length record is slated for an early 2025 release. It will be fun to watch writers take another stab at describing it. \nhttps://youtu.be/EqGoecdZJyE?si=TiCJYEXkKL9k3qMr \nJoin us this as well for outlaw country singer/songwriter Tanner Burch & The Hill Hippies. \nhttps://youtu.be/MXET_mPS2Nc?si=XBJbVaD0bog6Wrsr \n

SUMMARY:First Friday Live - 5/2 - Mic Harrison with Kevin Abernathy
DESCRIPTION:I’d rather see Mic Harrison and the High Score perform than just about any band on the planet. \nThat’s not just because Mic and the guys have a couple of road cases full of great songs or they’re journeyman musicians who’ve been a part of some of the best bands to come out of the South. It’s because every time I go to a Mic Harrison and the High Score show\, I know I’m going to walk in and see guys who look like they’re having so much fun on stage that it can’t help but spill out into the audience. I know I’m going to walk out at the end the night feeling better about the world with great rock ‘n’ roll and honky tonk songs playing over and over in my head. \nLead singer and rhythm guitarist Mic Harrison\, lead guitarist Robbie Trosper\, bassist Vance Hillard\, and guitarist Kevin Abernathy have a chemistry that can only come from long-term friendships and shared experiences. Harrison\, who started his young adulthood working in a saw mill in Bradford\, Tenn.\, a town so small it barely shows up on the map between Memphis and Jackson. He moved to Knoxville in the 1990s to become co-lead singer-songwriter (with Scott Miller) in The V-Roys\, a band that defined “Americana” before it was genre. After that group split\, he teamed with Trosper in the short-lived favorites The Faults and\, later\, teamed with Coffey in the now legendary power pop act Superdrag. When Superdrag ended\, Harrison enlisted established Knoxville rock act The High Score to back up a tour and the chemistry was so good that the partnership never ended. \nIn the past 12 years or so\, Mic and the guys have traveled the country\, performing at festivals from Bonnaroo to Easyriders Rodeos\, headlining bills from concert halls to the stickiest bars\, opening shows for everyone from Billy Joe Shaver to Huey Lewis and the News to ZZ Top\, and recording a terrific single with classic country singer Con Hunley. \nI’ve been lucky enough to experience Mic Harrison and the High Score perform about 50 times. I expect to see them at least 50 more. In the world today\, you need something that’s guaranteed to make you feel good that won’t hurt you – aside from a little soreness from swaying and dancing. \nI consider Mic Harrison and the High Score mental health food. \nThank you!

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special - 5/1 – Hardin Valley Thunder / Ally Venable
DESCRIPTION:Texas blues-rock singer/songwriter and guitarist extraordinaire\, Ally Venable\, entertains wherever she goes. With her signature glitter dresses and black knee-high boots\, Venable comes off of the ropes swinging dazzling crowds on tour or throughout the festival circuit. “Venable pulls off a stunner of gritty and/or sultry blues rock tunes embellished with lots of tasty guitar solos.” – Guitar Player Magazine. A Kilgore\, Texas native\, Ally began singing at church at four and picked up the guitar at age 12. By 13\, she started her own band and through her early influence of Stevie Ray Vaughan captured the passion and yearning for more in the blues genre. Early releases No Glass Shoes (2016) and Puppet Show (2018) started her fanbase\, charting radio play\, and several East Texas Music Awards. It was 2019’s #2 Billboard Blues charting Texas Honey and rocking sets on Ruf’s European Blues Caravan tour that propelled her internationally. “Ally is the future of blues and the crossover music of American roots-rock.” – Mike Zito. In what silenced many musicians during the pandemic\, Venable now in her 20’s\, released another Blues Billboard charting album\, Heart of Fire (2021)\, which challenged her to write not only about love but the unguarded honesty of feeling pain.”On this album\,I really wanted to create a tone of overcoming your struggles and persevering through them\,” she explains. Mentor and featured artist on this album\, Kenny Wayne Shepherd\, lends his guitar skills on XM Bluesville’s charted song\, “Bring on the Pain.” In 2022\, Guitar World Magazine named Ally #2 on the top 15 Young Guns Making the Gibson Les Paul Cool Again\, and she received the Road Warrior award from the Independent Blues Music Awards. Along with Ally’s own tour domestically and in Europe\, her band has supported Buddy Guy and Kenny Wayne Shepherd throughout the US\, as well as Colin James in Canada. She has performed as a featured artist on the Experience Hendrix Show at the ACL Live at Moody Theater in Austin\, Texas. Venable’s recent spring 2023 release produced by Grammy award winning producer\, Tom Hambridge\, includes a duet with the iconic Buddy Guy and a song featuring powerhouse guitarist Joe Bonamassa debuted at #1 on the Billboard Blues Charts & has remained in the top 100 since the release date. \nhttps://youtu.be/vCM00X-lmbU?si=l9SAe5dN7PgwLvwy \nHardin Valley Thunder ( Pellissippi State Bluegrass Band) will also join us this day! \n

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special - 4/30 - Ben McLaughlin
DESCRIPTION:Ben McLaughlin offers music that sounds like an electrified awakening earned within a psychedelic-folk odyssey.\nAt his core\, McLaughlin is a songwriter\, tethered to the ethers as much as his human vessel; an audible translator from his small corner of the universe. Sewn throughout his newest batch of songs\, is the mourning of the inevitable winds of change through Self and family structures\, the walking hand-in-hand with one’s own inner child\, and at the end of it all\, coming to a place of peace with how things are Now.\nA multi-instrumentalist and audio engineer\, he self-produces the songs he has written within the meditative state\, weaving together melodic thoughts of self- and environmental-dissection with organic production. Reminiscent of a time when vinyl was king\, the final results extends an open hand to the listener to experience an authenticity that allows them to lovingly transcend to their own higher essence. \nhttps://youtu.be/uYEzrCal-wA?si=SHDAFDN0e2gWH9Ik

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special - 4/28 - Shane Kelley / New Age Phonograph
DESCRIPTION:A captivating Singer\, Songwriter and Guitarist\, Shane Kelley is a passionate and soulful performer. His lyrics\, reflective of his South Texas Roots\, embrace the essence of\n“Texas Rock”\, Blues & Outlaw Country. \n \nNew Age Phonograph \nBorn originally in Colorado\, Matt soon moved to the small town of Brewster\, Wa\, where he first learned how to play guitar at the age of 14\, even writing original music a year later. He hopes to reunite people through his music into ONE WORLD TRIBE that all dance to the beat of LOVE and bring back Jimi Hendrix idea of\, ELECTRIC CHURCH! His alternate rock roots soon dug deep into 60s & 70s rock\, where he then discovered older folk blues leading as far back as the 1930s. From bookings down on the Seattle waterfront to venues across many West Coast college towns\, he has been performing covers of folk\, classic rock\, and blues on the road for many years since\, becoming a proficient musician with a emotive voice that lets you know he feels the songs he sings.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special - 4/22 - Daniel Miller / Ordinary Elephant
DESCRIPTION:Mesmerizing folk duo Ordinary Elephant has spent the better part of the last decade on a never-ending tour that’s earned married couple Crystal and Pete Damore widespread critical acclaim and made fans of luminaries like Tom Paxton and Mary Gauthier. In 2017\, the pair took home the International Folk Music Award for Artist of the Year on the strength of their breakout album\, Before I Go\, and two years later\, they returned with the similarly lauded Honest\, which the Associated Press hailed as “one of the best Americana albums of the year.” \nThe band’s new stripped-down\, self-titled collection is the purest distillation of their sound yet\, showcasing the arresting power of the couple’s gorgeous harmonies and intricate fretwork. The songs are timeless\, rooted in rich\, character-driven storytelling\, and the performances are similarly transportive\, fueled by delicately intertwined banjo\, guitar\, and octave mandolin. Though the songs were born out of a period of deep uncertainty\, the record itself is a work of profound self-assurance\, one delivered by a duo whose personal and professional lives embody the limitless possibility of honest\, organic collaboration. Press play on Ordinary Elephant and you’ll hear more than just a husband and wife; you’ll hear the sound of sincerity and commitment\, of patience and gratitude\, of learning to let go of expectation and revel in the simple beauty of the moment. \n \nDaniel Miller is a singer-songwriter with a penchant for centering his music on locales that inspire him. “I tend to focus on an area or region that strikes me and write songs about that place. My focus isn’t on limiting a record to fit into a specific bin on a store shelf; it’s to tell a story. So while I’ve been labeled a Country\, Americana\, or Roots Music artist\, I try not to let that influence or limit whatever project I’m working on at the moment.” \nBorn and raised in Knoxville\, TN and currently living near Boston\, MA\, Daniel has been writing songs based off of his experiences on the road for the past twenty years. Daniel’s newest album\, his first to be billed under the full band name Daniel Miller & The High Life\, is based on his time spent in West Texas. Scheduled for release in April 2025\, it will prominently feature his touring band along with some very special artists. \nDaniel’s songs can be heard on numerous Country and Americana radio stations across the United States and internationally. He has opened for various national acts including: Jamey Johnson\, Chris Knight\, American Aquarium\, The Old 97’s\, The Mavericks\, The Black Lillies\, Scott Miller\, Lukas Nelson & POTR\, Sunny Sweeney\, Mic Harrison\, and Dick Dale; in some of America’s most beloved performance venues. \n  \n

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special - 4/17 - Wright Gatewood / Dark Waters Project
DESCRIPTION:The Dark Waters Project is a Nashville based band that plays what they like to call\, Darkgrass. Their music is a blend of multiple genre’s but is greatly influenced by Bluegrass and Alternative Rock. The band has a long list of previously played venues and positive reviews from all over North America and from countless people in the music industry. Dark Waters is led by vocal duo\, Cherish Hamby and Adam Hamby. Cherish and Adam do a vast majority of the bands songwriting\, with occasional covers that they love to make their own. \nThey have won multiple awards for songwriting and performance; including The Smoky Mountain Songwriting Festival\, where they finished 1st in the Pop (Dream Again)\, Blues (Deep Red) and Rock (Sober) Genera’s\, 2nd in Bluegrass (Bridges) and won the Grand Prize / Song of the Year with their song\, “Deep Red” in 2018. They have also been featured on radio and nationally televised shows\, like The Dugger Mountain Music Hall and Jim Parker’s Songwriters Showcase. \nAdam and Cherish have had a number of different band members over the last 9 years\, from small 3 piece acts to large 7 piece groups. From 2012-14\, they had a 5 piece Alternative Rock band often described as The Civil Wars fronting Evanescence. They had their first collaborative album titled\, “The Rains”\, produced in the Fall of 2014 by Mike Hartnett. Their new album\, titled “The Darkgrass Sessions” was released in July 2019 and was their second album together. The Darkgrass Sessions was produced by Lee Groitzsch\, with a number of the songs co-produced by Noel Golden. \nAdam is one of the founding members of the band and is one of two lead vocals. He has been the lead singer of 3 different bands over the last decade\, releasing an EP with 2 of them (The Fifth Seal 2005; Stonesfall 2007) and a solo album titled “Trails\,” in 2003. Influenced heavily by his Christian faith\, he writes and sings from his soul and it can be heard in both his voice and lyrics. He had a song reach Christian radio in the mid 2000’s called\, “Mercedes” with his former band\, The Fifth Seal. \nCherish is one of the founding members of Dark Waters and is also one of the lead vocalists. She is often seen as the face of Dark Waters. Her voice is as stirring\, beautiful and unique as Stevie Nicks or Jewel\, but it’s all her own. She has worked with some of the best that Nashville has to offer. Mark Miller and Garth Brooks paid for and offered some of Garth’s band members to record her first album in 2001 – the entire EP was produced\, engineered and paid for by Mark Miller of Forerunner\, Jacks Tracks and Allentown Studios (production and engineering credits include Garth Brooks\, Trisha Yearwood\, Kathy Mattea\, Chris LeDoux\, George Jones). A few of the songs saw radio play all over the Southeast US in the early 2000’s. She has also been produced by George Cocchini (Third Day\, DC Talk\, Rich Mullins\, Sawyer Brown\, Steven Curtis Chapman). She released her second self-titled EP “Cherish” in 2001\, but is now the heart of the Dark Waters Project. \n \nWright Gatewood\, a southern rascal lost in the heart of Chicago started ruminating on what storytelling might mean to us\, five\, ten\, fifteen years down the road. How might sounds of the past circle back around? The answers lay hidden in the songs. A recent Merlefest Songwriting Competition finalist\, Wright Gatewood released his debut EP vol. 1: the city\, the first in his Wayward Triptych series\, in the winter of 2019. Through generous grant funded support from Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events\, Wright released vol. 2: the land in the spring of 2024. With an emotional palette that plays with your heart strings\, Wright strives to bring ideals of the helpless wanderers\, the rapscallions of yesteryear\, and the dreamers of tomorrow to your ears as he pieces the parts together.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special - 4/16 - Cabage and Vann / A Lee Edwards
DESCRIPTION:A. Lee (Alan) Edwards has been making music for 30 years. It’s been an essential element throughout his entire life. That said\, his new music represents a rebirth of sorts\, one that’s manifest in not one\, but two new albums\, Interpreting Heart Sounds Vol. I and Interpreting Heart Sounds Vol. II. Produced by Alan Lee Edwards and mixed by the legendary John Wood (the man behind the boards for Nick Drake\, Fairport Convention\, John Cale\, Squeeze\, and Richard and Linda Thompson)\, the new album is a major milestone in a career that has already spawned five albums — three under the aegis of “Lou Ford” and two under the handle of “The Loudermilks.” \nRecorded at the famed Echo Mountain Recording Studios in Asheville North Carolina\, both albums were engineered by Kenny Harrington\, mixed and mastered by the team at Well Made Music in Bristol\, TN.\, and pressed locally at Citizen Vinyl in Asheville. Vol. 1 is a band-oriented effort\, while Vol. 2 features a more stripped down sound with the addition of strings. \nVol. 1 also features a guest appearance by Richard Thompson on the track titled “John on the Run.” \nThe songs are both tender and enticing\, from the decidedly down home delivery of “Caroline” and the earnest and engaging “Ride On\,” to the reflective sounds of “John on the Run\,” “Mom (Always Liked You)” and “How Blue.” They epitomize the approach of an artist solely in control of his craft while inspired by honesty\, integrity\, creativity and craft. \n \nIt’s East Tennessee’s Own Bill Cabage and Griffin Cavender Vann also on todays Plate! \n

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special - 4/15 - Annie Stokes / Water Tower
DESCRIPTION:One of Annie Stokes’ earliest memories is watching the PBS broadcast of Sondheim’s musical ‘Into the Woods’ and rewinding the scenes to study what the actors did to make the audience laugh or react. “There was a never a version of my life where I wasn’t going to be a performer\,” she says. But her connection to a televised musical went a bit deeper than getting praise from an audience: she wanted\, from an early age\, to collect stories. To see how they all bind us together. \nA childhood spent alternately in dance studios\, buried in books\, or outside on the easternmost seam of the Blue Ridge Mountains shaped Annie’s childhood and teen years\, before college allowed her to pursue the study of history and gender (two themes that come up frequently in Annie’s work). After giving a ‘real’ job the (literal) old college try\, it became evident to her that her life’s calling was in music and performance\, albeit not on Broadway. Annie’s parents got her a Breedlove guitar for her 21st birthday\, and she diligently began paying her dues at open mics\, bars\, street festivals\, and anywhere that would let her plug in her mini Fishman amp and set out a tip jar. “If I’d had a clue about the scope of what I was endeavoring to do\, I might have been too overwhelmed to try.” While taking the long way certainly has its share of potholes (and cheap motels)\, Annie greeted 2020 with nearly a decade of hands-on experience in the independent\, DIY school of musicianship. \nAnd then the world changed\, on a big and small scale. The pandemic coincided with new motherhood\, and Annie and her husband (and bandmate and co-writer) Will Berger found themselves hunkered down with a newborn baby and a half-finished album. “When you have a child\, you have to squeeze an hour out of 20 minutes\, and when the world is locked down\, you have to pause. So we just cracked open some moments.” The result was their 2021 album “The One That Gets Away”\, which would go on to win the 2022 WAMMIE (Washington Area Music Award) for Best Country/Americana Album. Written and produced by Stokes and Berger\, this album finally encapsulated the sound that had been gestating and forming since that 21st birthday Breedlove was unwrapped\, and audiences (and the industry) responded accordingly. \nAnnie teamed up with producer Austin Bello for her 2023 EP “Wild Rose” which brought further acclaim and placements\, including being featured on season 6 of The Martha Bassett Show. Currently\, she is working with Bello on her upcoming full length LP\, due out in early 2025. \n \n“Water Tower is this wonderful band that is made up of “the lost boys”… its like a soup kitchen for those in need of belonging and family who have been through some of the experiences they have over come” -Grand Ole Country Bunker. \nFrontman Kenny Feinstein (right) has spent more than 15 years curating the band to what it is today. In 2005 he began performing and recording with the Water Tower Bucket Boys then modified members and style as Water Tower String Band. In 2018 he moved from his Portland Oregon roots to Los Angeles where he began the new iteration of the band as known simply as Water Tower. The core group is made up of three unlikely protégés who came from very different backgrounds to form one great sound of their own. Kenny brings solid string experience (banjo\, mandolin\, fiddle\, guitar) in his favorite genres of Punk Rock\, Old Time Music and Bluegrass. Soon after moving to Los Angeles he met Tommy Drinkard \, an audio engineer \, songwriter and front-man for his own rock band called Tommy Drinkard and the Remedy. Tommy who is already a great electric and acoustic guitar player began taking banjo lessons from Kenny and within a year he won first place intermediate banjo at the highly acclaimed Topanga Banjo and Fiddle Competition. Soon their songwriting collaboration began to take place and songs like “The River Song”\, “Fivers” and “AMPM” began to form their sound. Soon after that\, they met Jesse Blue Eads a 19 year old jazz bassist who held his own on the banjo. They met while busking at the beach in Southern California. Unbeknownst to Kenny and Tommy at the time Jesse had just received a Jazz Award from Berklee School of Music. Amazing sounds were heard across the beach as the three met and traded styles and licks for hours including what would become the double banjo performance signature sound in songs like “Take me Back” . Together they share their love for Bluegrass\, Old Time\, Jam Grass while adding their individual infusion of reggae and rock (Tommy Drinkard)\, Jazz and prog-rock (Jesse Blue Eads) and Punk Rock & Old Time styles (Kenny Feinstein).

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special - 4/14 - Juliet Lloyd / Jim Myers
DESCRIPTION:There’s an unmistakable urgency you can feel when a song is written and performed from a place of complete honesty. That feeling permeates singer-songwriter Juliet Lloyd’s new album\, Carnival. \n“I’ve always been envious of writers who say they write songs because they have to\, because they had these things they just had to get out of themselves\,” Juliet says. “I had never really felt that way until this album. I’ve become someone who writes because they have to.” \nThe album is Juliet’s first full-length effort since 2007. Shortly after releasing her sophomore album that year\, she walked away from music completely for more than 10 years\, feeling burned out and unhappy with her career progression like so many other independent artists. After going through a divorce in 2019 and in the midst of a global pandemic\, she found herself pulled back toward the siren call of songwriting and again making the leap to pursue it full time. Carnival is in many ways the culmination of those decisions\, and the reintroduction of an artist who now has the wisdom of experience. \n“These songs have helped me make sense of emotions and experiences that have happened both recently and those that I’ve buried for 20+ years\, to confront truths about myself and about others that I’ve been afraid or unwilling to say out loud\,” Juliet says. “I’ve never been a confrontational person. But this is definitely a confrontational album. And I love it.” \nRecorded in an unhurried process over nearly 15 months and produced by Todd Wright (Lucy Woodward\, Butch Walker\, Toby Lightman)\, Carnival’s nine songs are a study in contrasts. Light and dark\, devastating and self-deprecating\, apologetic and angry\, conversational and conceptual. They are genre-fluid\, weaving elements of pop\, folk\, soul\, and rock to create a vibrant and often unexpected platform for Juliet’s unflinching storytelling. \n“When you give all your grace away to those who don’t deserve it\, there’s no saving grace for yourself\,” Lloyd sings on the album’s leadoff single\, “Pretty.” It’s a line that takes aim in equal parts at both narrator and subject\, a common device throughout Carnival’s lyrics. \nThe central theme of Carnival and that of its title track is not being too precious about any one experience or decision. Take them for what they are\, live in the moment\, and move on when they’re done. It acknowledges also that memory can be subjective\, and ambiguous—was an experience ultimately a good thing or a bad thing? And whose memory can you rely on to determine the answer to that question? \nThese questions are on full display in one of the album’s standout tracks\, “Sorry Now\,” a raw and immediate interrogation of divorce. “Why does it feel like the choices of who gets the knife set\, the mattress\, the old picture frames are harder than choosing to leave in the first place?” Juliet sings over a sparse keyboard accompaniment before the track kicks in with a lush\, R&B-inflected production. \n \nJim Myers also joins us this day.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special - 4/12 - Remedy Tree
DESCRIPTION:Florida’s Americana ensemble Remedy Tree has achieved notable success\, securing second place at the prestigious SPBGMA National Band Championship. Following their signing with Mountain Fever Records in 2024\, the band has performed internationally\, showcasing their talents at Ireland’s Westport Folk and Bluegrass Festival. Remedy Tree has shared the stage with legendary artists such as Peter Rowan\, The Steeldrivers\, Ricky Skaggs\, Town Mountain\, Rhonda Vincent\, and Della Mae. As a selected 2023 IBMA Ramble Showcase band\, they have demonstrated their prowess within the industry. With a new album and larger shows on the horizon\, Remedy Tree is poised for a breakout year in 2025. Get ready to join the journey with this rising Americana sensation. \nRemedy Tree\, founded by Gabriel and Abigail Acevedo in 2015\, in its inception had a strong indie-folk sound. As time progressed Remedy Tree added a banjo player and were subsequently thrust into a bluegrass trajectory. Gabriel Acevedo was born in Bayamon Puerto Rico and was raised in rural Umatilla Florida. His Puerto Rican heritage and upbringing provides an outsider’s approach to the genre. Abigail was raised in folk and old-time music circles and traveled with her family band throughout her teen years. \nAn original music band at heart\, Remedy Tree combines the love for bluegrass\, an Appalachian old-time spirit\, and the folk melodies that started it all\, creating a truly unique Americana experience that provides a fresh perspective into where bluegrass is headed in the future. Remedy Tree recently welcomed Isaac Taylor (banjo) and Nathan Beaumont (mandolin) into the band\, some of the region’s best players\, further blossoming the Remedy Tree sound. \n \n
