SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special - 6/28 - Evie Andrus / The Bourbon Man
DESCRIPTION:Evie Andrus has spent most of her adult life adding tasty licks to other people’s projects\, adding just the right ingredient to make a piece of music sound its best. With the release of her first album under her own name\, “Evie’s Great Adventure\,” the fiddler/vocalist ready to deliver the main course. \nThe new album is flat-out feel-good music delivered with the same heart and soul that’s made Evie a popular performed all across the Southeast. \nMaybe you caught her bands Barefoot Sanctuary or Buffalo Fiasco\, or heard her backing up renowned cellist Dave Eggar\, irreverent singer-songwriter Roger Alan Wade\, or performing at the Big Ears Festival with improvisational great Lonnie Holley\, or maybe you spotted her backing up Foreigner on a short tour. There’s also the possibility that you heard her music on the HBO series “The Outsider” or saw her appearance on “American Ninja Warrior.” \nBorn in Fargo\, N.D. and raised in Minot\, N.D.\, Evie began playing fiddle at six years old in her father’s band Crossroads\, but she was already a stage veteran. She first performed on stage at the age of 3\, blowing a train whistle\, on one of her father’s songs. \nWhen Evie was in the 4th grade\, her father started a family band called Family Ties\, which included her father on banjo and her brother Joe on bass. Mom ran sound for the group. \n“Our thing was to wear funny ties\,” says Evie. “My favorite was a rubber Swiss cheese tie … In the summer\, we were out and about. We played a lot around North Dakota\, South Dakota\, Minnesota and Canada\, Good Sam conventions and re-enactments\, fur trade re-enactments.” \nWho even knew there were “fur trade” re-enactments? \nAll through high school\, Evie performed in bluegrass bands and her high school orchestra\, but she didn’t have a lot in common with her classmates. \n“I grew up in a very bluegrass-centric family\,” she says. “Plus\, we had no TV. My entertainment was listening to (vintage radio shows) ‘Sherlock Holmes\,’ ‘Dragnet’ and ‘Inner Sanctum.’” \nEvie later attended North Dakota State University\, majoring in athletic training\, and playing in a group called Ironwood and\, later\, Sisters of the North on the side. It was an encounter with East Tennessee bluegrass act Blue Moon Rising that made Evie decide to move to East Tennessee. She moved to Johnson City\, Tenn.\, and landed a scholarship in the East Tennessee State University bluegrass program. \n“My first fiddle teacher there was (former Bluegrass Boys’ fiddler) Tater Tate\,” says Evie. “I couldn’t believe I was getting a scholarship to take lessons from Tater Tate!” \nWhile in Johnson City she worked at the Acoustic Coffee House\, working as a server and making music. She was a regular at late-night jam sessions and later became a favorite player to accompany singer-songwriters. \n“It was a different approach to music than what I had done before\,” says Evie. “It was kind of freeing in a way.” \nAfter a graduation\, Evie returned to North Dakota for few years before taking a music job in with the Hatfield & McCoy Dinner Show in Pigeon Forge\, Tenn. \nAfter a year and a half of dinner shows\, Evie leaned into teaching and playing with a variety of bands and musicians and then founded Barefoot Sanctuary\, which later became Buffalo Fiasco. A gig with Lonnie Holley at the Big Ears Festival led to Evie getting a call from HBO to be part of the limited series “The Outsider.” \n“The scene at the festival with the fiddle tunes\, that’s me!” says Evie. “I’m blurry in the background\, but it was really awesome.” \nAs a side person\, Evie says she’s always known where she fits. \n“I call myself a Jell-O player\,” says Evie. “There’s always room for Jell-O. It fills in all the cracks.” \nWith the release of “Evie’s Great Adventure\,” though\, she knows where she fits as well. \n“I’m really excited to get my true musical voice out more\,” says Evie. “In an odd way\, it took the pandemic to make me take time to find my voice. Now I want to share my love of music and adventure. It’s not earth shattering. It’s something people can put on and just have a great afternoon.” \n \nThe Bourbon Man is a one man band from Belarus. Rised from the ash of WhiskeyJamBand The Bourbon Man plays his dirthy blues on cigar box guitar and bass drum\, screaming vocals and other strange stuff.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special - 6/25 - Robinella
DESCRIPTION:Robinella’s career began with a sort of luck that rarely comes to most artists within their lifetime. What started out as a simple husband-and-wife duo fresh out of college quickly grew to a full-fledged band that blended Bluegrass\, Country and Jazz. The combination of Robinella’s honey-sweet vocals with violin\, mandolin\, bass\, drums and piano captivated audiences\, thus creating the ever popular Robinella & the CC Stringband. \nThey released their first album\, self-titled Robinella and The CC Stringband\, in 2000\, which quickly followed\, No Saint\, No Prize in 2001. Both were on the independent label Big Gulley Records. With a few simple twists of fate\, what followed was a whirlwind of rapid success – Columbia Records liked what they heard and signed Robinella in 2002. The label took seven songs from the band’s two prior albums and released them as the CD Blanket for My Soul and then released a full album in 2003\, Robinella and the CC Stringband. This led to a national tour including opening for such artists as Bob Dylan\, Willie Nelson\, Earl Scruggs\, Nickel Creek\, Robert Earl Keen\, Kasey Chambers\, Del McCoury and Rodney Crowell as well as an appearance on “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” and a music video on CMT for their hit single\, “Man Over”. She also performed on NPR’s “Mountain Stage\,” appeared on the Grand Ole Opry and performed on PBS’s “SoundStage.” In 2006\, Robinella was nominated for “Emerging Artist of the Year” at the Americana Music Awards and released her fourth album\, “Solace for the Lonely”\, on Dualtone Records in Nashville. \nBut then life\, as it has a tendency to do\, threw a few curveballs her way. She became a mom and a couple of years later\, she and her husband/musical partner split up with a new record almost completed. Exhausted and somewhat disillusioned with the industry and its promises\, it was time to regroup\, redefine and get back to her roots. So she returned to her home\, the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains\, and got back in touch with what she truly wanted – love\, family\, friendship\, music\, art\, truth. \nWith that comes her latest release\, “Fly Away Bird”\, her most mature work. However\, within the melancholy and touches of sadness there is not true despair. For such a voice — that dazzling\, warm\, bright-as-summer-sunshine soprano — to even communicate it would most likely defy certain laws of emotional physics. No\, instead\, this album\, beneath the disappointments\, she is brimming with optimism — with hope. You can feel it\, and even more important than that\, you believe — because she believes\, and because her music is so honest and so genuine and so forthright that you just can’t help but knowing that this is an artist who still finds life to be magical. \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nVY6pjpvFuk

His songwriting is full of rich imagery that makes listeners feel the emotions behind the lyrics. \nTrey continues to bring an unforgettable live show to coveted stages across the southeast and has provided opening performances rising stars Dillon Carmichael and Walker Montgomery as well as for country stars such as Phil Vassar and Sawyer Brown. \nTrey’s accolades include 3 nominations for the 2025 Lexington Music Awards for Male Vocalist of the Year\, Country Artist of the Year\, and Song of the Year for his single\, “Make It To Nashville” and a nomination for the 2025 Josie Music Awards for Male Vocalist of the Year – Country. \n \nKirsty Lee Akers is one of Australia’s most unique and authentic recording artists. A rare talent who is proud of her First Nations heritage\, she is a Wonnarua woman (Hunter Valley – Australia). Akers has embraced a global musical culture and now spends her time between Australia and a hard-earned international touring schedule in North America and Europe. Although she spends time overseas during the year\, Australia will always be her spiritual home. “Music and family have always been the most important parts of my life. My Nan\, Mum\, and Aunt were all singers\, and I grew up with my pop playing country music all the time. I still remember my first performance at age three. I was hooked!” – Kirsty Lee Akers \nKirsty’s childhood was far from easy\, and her family could be described as “Aussie Battlers”. Born when her mother was only 17 years old\, she quickly learned the importance of teamwork\, love\, and family connection. Akers was not born into money\, one of four children growing up in a small house\, she saw her father work two jobs to get by. Kirsty learned early on that if she wanted something\, she was going to have to earn it. These are traits that to this day are extremely important to her and help her connect with her fans on an honest and personal level. Akers performed in public for the first time at the tender age of three years old and recorded her first EP at the age of 15. She funded that recording with the money she made busking tirelessly on the streets of Tamworth each January. This connection with Australia’s Country Music Capital lead Kirsty to graduate from the CMAA Academy of Country Music and then further afield through the Talent Development Project. After these achievements\, it was time to spread her wings and explore the world – First stop Nashville. “That trip to Nashville in 2006 was just like my first trip to Tamworth\, and from the time I stepped off the plane I was in love! There is just something magical about that city. Music everywhere\, dreams everywhere\, it is so inspiring. But as much as I love traveling\, Australia always calls me home.” – Kirsty Lee Akers \n \n

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special - 6/7 - Brandon Maddox / Conner Brooke
DESCRIPTION:From sharing the stage with superstar\, Brett Eldredge\, as well as acclaimed performances in casinos\, clubs\, and festivals to having original songs featured in movies and appearing on TV and radio shows\, Brandon Maddox\, has quickly established himself as one of Country Music’s rising stars. He was named\, “Monster Truck Artist of the Year” and was both a Josie Award recipient in 2017 for his hit single “Dixie Chaser” as well as the winner of “Song of the Year” in 2019 for his song “Drive Me to Drink.” \nBrandon’s dad schooled him in classic rock\, so it was only natural that when the youngster picked up the guitar and taught himself to play\, he used a Beatle’s songbook. While teaching himself\, he noticed a common thread among the songs—the songs were written by actual members of The Beatles. Brandon wrote his first song at the tender age of 11 and now has an original catalog of over a thousand songs\, a few of which have won awards. After college Brandon moved to Nashville from his hometown near Chattanooga\, TN to pursue his songwriting passion. \nhttps://youtu.be/fM4SnucrOxQ?si=v7Ai4nhFPSjKQOQy \nConner Brooke will also join us this day! \nhttps://youtu.be/SBZjHjiYO5g?si=aO9vRXiFavOKuO1W

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special - 5/31 - Joe Kaplow / Sean Carson
DESCRIPTION:Joe Kaplow:\nBefore I started my career I had a choice: to take over my parent’s thoroughbred farm in New Jersey or pursue music full time in California and relinquish the farm to sale. I still wonder what life would have looked like had I stayed\, but who can resist the gold rush? Besides\, I plan to get back there one day on another farm with some other red barn. \nMy music comes from life’s moments — smelling 4 acres of freshly cut grass\, watching the steam from a horse’s breath in the early morning\, finally holding the neck of my guitar after holding bridles and worn wooden handles all day. 4000 acres of freshly burnt wildfire\, watching the steam from the Pacific Ocean’s breath in the early morning\, finally holding the neck of my guitar after clutching the worn steering wheel of the tour van all day. \nNow my reality is in Bonny Doon\, CA\, where mountains meet the sea. I am in my recording studio\, aptly named Hippie Cowboy\, every day. Slow and steady; keep it fun\, stay engaged. All for the moment when the song finally sounds right. My dad passed away a couple years ago — his bullwhip is on the wall\, his Harley is in the driveway. He visits me in dreams\, and oh\, the moment I wake up! Sometimes I write for him. Sometimes for my mom\, who I hope will move out to California soon. Maybe she could volunteer at an equestrian center… \nA person is made from their moments\, like their music is made. I know this is a bio but I shouldn’t have to say much. Listen to the record. If I’ve done my job well\, you will know me by the end. \n \nIf you love country music\, then you’re in the right place! join us for Sean Carson! \n \n

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special - 5/27 - Zack Miles / Lazarus Lake
DESCRIPTION:Zack Miles is a Singer/songwriter with folk\, americana\, and bluegrass influence. Coffee-core. \n \nLazarus Lake\, the alt-country outfit of singer/songwriter Michael Jones\, arrives with its debut record Family Tree\, out May 30th\, 2025 on Kindness Records. \nBlending homespun southern rock with the no-frills directness of Americana tradition\, Family Tree explores the ties that bind and the ways that they’re strained—with an eye to redeem the moments when life falls apart and to keep alive the memory of loved ones lost. \nFamily Tree is a record built on the back of long nights and longer weeks in the years that Jones spent gigging solo and in country bands in and around Knoxville\, TN through the first half of the decade. The debut record focuses on offering stories of loss and growth that are guided by a gentle hand. \nCovering adoration\, regret\, grief\, and everything in between\, these songs frame the simple\, elegant core of the album: even as it ends—and regardless of how you feel about it at any given time—your family is forever.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special - 5/24 - John M / Rino Calandra
DESCRIPTION:Music Connection Magazine named JOHN M as one of the “Top 100 Unsigned Live Acts\,” twice! (In 2018. and again in 2023.) \nJohn M is endorsed by G-7 Capos\, FISHMAN Trnsducers Inc\, and CAD Microphones. \nExperienced and confident. His songs are well crafted\, and take you back to a time when it was about the music. Mixing well placed licks between delicious melodies\, his vocals are straight-forward and his stories compelling. Pierce Brochetti— Music Connection Magazine\, August\, 20 \nPERFORMANCE CREDITS include the Bluebird Café\, (Nashville)\,True Music Room at Cambria Hotel\, (Nashville\,) Blue Plate Special\, (WDVX Knoxville\,) Eddie’s Attic (Atlanta)\, \, Coffee Gallery and Russ & Julie’s House concerts\, (Los Angeles)\, plus numerous other venues and live radio & TV appearances in nearly all 50 states. \nEqually comfortable fronting a band or performing solo with just his 12 string & 6 string guitars and his voice\, he has a captivating and riveting stage presence. \n \nMy name is Rino Calandra and I am originally from Genoa (Italy). Passion for Music and guitars made me move to USA\, and since 2014 I live in Nashville (Tennessee). I am a fingerstyle guitar player and singer songwriter. I played in many shows\, and festival in Europe\, Canada\, and here in the United States. In addition to be a musician\, I started (back in 2012) the activity of “guitar hunter”. Looking for guitars that were requested of me. Vintage \, limited edition\, left hand\, and more. Starting this with acquaintances and friends: to then build a real clientele (expecially in Italy). This made me also passionate about the art of building a guitar\, the diversity of woods\, and the whole process to achieve this. My future plan is to open a left-handed (and right-handed) guitar shop here in Nashville. I also worked for Gibson guitar for a short time\, but it didn’t work out. Playing the guitar completely changed my life. It gave me the chance to be myself\, communicate (when I didn’t yet speak English)\, meet people\, and have something to bring all my emotions to. I’m currently working on my new instrumental guitar record\, continuing my activity as a guitar hunter\, purchasing guitars for my future shop\, and living my life in Nashville.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special - 5/21 - Ash Taylor / Frank Viele
DESCRIPTION:They say she’s a “Bad Ash.” Ash Taylor is a country music recording artist and award-winning songwriter whose high-energy performances and authentic storytelling have earned her a reputation as one of the most exciting voices in country music today. Born and raised in Bakersfield\, California—the home of the legendary Bakersfield Sound—Ash grew up inspired by icons like Buck Owens\, Loretta Lynn\, Brandy Clark\, and Gretchen Wilson. Driven by a passion for music\, she sold everything she owned to move to Nashville\, Tennessee\, where she began building her career from the ground up. From sleeping in her car to playing honky-tonks on Lower Broadway to nationwide touring\, Ash’s determination and talent have taken her from humble beginnings to stages across the country. \nKnown for her relatable lyrics and electrifying performances\, Ash has toured extensively and continues to perform as part of her Stuck on Indiana tour\, captivating fans with her signature California country sound. She’s played at renowned venues such as The Bluebird Cafe and shared the stage with artists like Colt Ford\, Elvie Shane\, and Aly Walker. Her debut EP\, Bakersfield\, climbed to #60 on the iTunes Top 100 Country Albums chart and earned her recognition from the Bakersfield Country Music Awards. Ash has also penned songs for artists like Big Smo\, Ryan Larkins\, Noah Smith\, and guitar legend Johnny Hiland\, showcasing her versatility as a songwriter. \nIn addition to her growing list of achievements\, Ash is a dedicated mentor\, teaching songwriting masterclasses at colleges and universities and continued-learning campuses nationwide\, including Sweetwater Headquarters in Fort Wayne\, Indiana. Her passion for connecting with people is reflected not only in her music but also in her ability to bring real stories and emotions to life on stage as well as in the hands of the other musicians and writers she guides and teaches. Ash lives in Nashville with her husband\, Chris—her lead guitar player and band leader—and their golden retriever\, Melody (Mel). Whether she’s performing at a sold-out venue or writing her next hit\, Ash Taylor continues to inspire fans with her grit\, heart\, and undeniable talent. \n \nFrank Viele’s brand of New England blues rock tugs at the heartstrings\, pulling the listener on a surprise journey that transcends genre. \nYet even as he’s racked up accolades over the past 7 years — including New England Music Awards for Album of the Year\, Male Performer of the Year\, Songwriter of The Year (X2)\, and Live Act of The Year for gutsy\, gritty tracks like “Broken Love Song” and “‘Til The Bourbon’s All Gone” — he’s rarely paused to savor the moment before moving on to yet another tour\, album\, or collaboration. \nIt wasn’t until the pandemic hit in early 2020 and he was forced to hunker down that Viele realized that time itself was the world’s most precarious\, yet precious\, resource. \nAt that time\, Viele embarked on a writing-and-recording journey with Jimmy Nutt (Jason Isbell\, American Aquarium\, The Dead South) and James LeBlanc (Travis Tritt\, Will Hoge\, Tim McGraw\, Faith Hill\, Dylan LeBlanc\, Kid Rock\, Rascal Flatts) of Muscle Shoals\, Alabama. Within this co-writing collaborative partnership\, Viele approached each new song slowly\, intentionally\, and with an open mind\, challenging himself to transcend the limits of genre and industry expectations. \nIn 2021\, a handful songs that he had started recording in Connecticut\, and finished at Nutthouse Recording Studios in Muscle Shoals\, were brought to life in the 2021 EP “Time Is A Thief.” This EP won him the coveted New England Music Award for “Songwriter of The Year” for the second time and acted as a prequel to Viele’s upcoming full-length 2023 album. \nIn January 2023\, the first track off Viele’s forthcoming\, 13-song album completed in Nutthouse Recording Studios\, “Hearts We Left Behind”\, came out in January of 2023 and was featured on Boston’s Country 102.5 as their “Song Of The Week”. “Hearts” continues to receive critical acclaim citing Viele’s strength as a storyteller and his signature vocal delivery. \n“Frank Viele continues to astound with his new single entitled “Hearts We Left Behind” and has once again crafted a classic. Viele is a consummate wordsmith. His songs contain magic dust capable of spinning webs of musical ecstasy.” (MyAmpMusic.co) \nThe “magic dust” they are referring to has been gathered from experiences on the road and in venues across the country. Viele built his sound and narrated his journey while constantly touring the United States\, playing hundreds of shows each year and sharing the stage with artists such as John Waite\, Jeffrey Gaines\, Lee DeWyze\, Zach Myers of Shinedown\, Bob Marley’s Wailers\, Howie Day\, Xavier Rudd\, Ingrid Michaelson\, Tony Lucca\, Pat McGee\, and Blues Traveler\, among others\, since the release of his first solo album in 2015. \nBut Frank Viele’s musical journey starts long before that… Fondly listening to his grandmother play piano as a child and later reinvigorated as a teenager inspired by his older brother’s taste in music and an acoustic guitar he left behind when he moved to the West Coast\, Viele developed a deep appreciation for a wide range of genres including rock\, blues\, folk\, and country. \nHe began writing his own music as a teenager and quickly developed a knack for crafting deeply personal and emotive songs that spoke to the human experience. \nAfter honing his craft fronting New York City based Jam/Funk/Rock Outfit “Frank Viele & The Manhattan Project”\, Viele released his debut solo album “Fall Your Way” in 2015\, which was met with critical acclaim including 2 New England Music Awards for Album of The Year and Male Performer of The Year. (On top of the Live Act of The Year Award he had received in 2014). \nStacking up additional accolades on the road in 2016\, Frank Viele won the Deli Magazine award for “New England’s Best Emerging Folk/Soul Act”. He then released his second solo album\, “What’s His Name?” which made it’s way onto the AMA Charts and Relix National Jam Radio Charts carried by the single\, “Pomegranate”. \nThe Album\, “What’s His Name?” won Frank Viele the New England Music Award for “Songwriter of The Year” which paved this Connecticut musician’s path to Muscle Shoals\, Alabama where he began the next chapter of his writing and recording journey. \nViele’s music is characterized not only by his powerful vocals\, soulful guitar playing\, and poignant lyrics\, but also its deep honesty. This is an artist who is not afraid of wearing his heart on his sleeve\, and dig deep into the joys and struggles of life. He has been praised for his ability to blend elements of folk\, blues\, and rock into a unique sound that is both timeless and contemporary.
