DESCRIPTION:When it comes to his latest album\, In the Shadow of the Mountain\, 25-year-old singer-songwriter Cole Chaney is pretty candid and blunt about who he is and what kind of music he wants to make — the result of which\, this stunning offering from an artist wise beyond his age. \n“There’s a yin to every yang\,” Chaney says. “I want nothing more than for people to be creatively fulfilled\, and to do what they want. But\, for me to preach that? I have to practice it.” \nThat attitude resides at the core of the record\, where the trajectory of the songs seemingly — more so purposely — shoot off in the opposite direction of many of his contemporaries in the Americana\, country and folk music scenes. In truth? Chaney is summoning his rock roots. \n“I’m not concerned with being labeled as ‘country’.“There’s not a lot of music being released right now that is doing anything for me. I made something that I would want to listen to.” \nPointing to his lifelong admiration for 1990s rock — specifically Soundgarden\, Alice in Chains and Stone Temple Pilots — as a vital influence on the sonic landscape of the album\, Chaney aimed to find a melodic balance between that raw and real rock sound and the bluegrass and folk music of his native Kentucky. \n“I wanted to make something that sounded like Ralph Stanley went in and got backed up by Soundgarden\,” Chaney jokes. “I write what I listen to. And whatever I listen to is going to come out in my music.” \nIn the Shadow of the Mountain was captured by famed producer Duane Lundy at his legendary studio in Lexington\, Kentucky. While talking at-length about the possible collaboration\, Lundy spoke of his love for Soundgarden\, Alice in Chains and Stone Temple Pilots. \n“I know plenty of bluegrass guys that could have recorded this for me\,” Chaney says. “But\, I wanted to take that string band and folk sound and bring it to a rock producer\, to bring that big sound out of these acoustic instruments — [Duane] was about to do that.” \nThe album was also co-produced by guitarist Zachary Hamilton\, a close friend of Chaney\, who is also the brother and bandmate of rising Lexington singer-songwriter Abby Hamilton. \n“[Zach] has that ability to fill a room with his guitar\, his voicings\, and all the choices he goes for down the neck of the guitar\,” Chaney says. “When Abby was opening for us\, I got to sit there and watch him play every night. I knew when I was going to do another album\, he needed to be involved in some capacity.” \nHeading into the recording sessions\, Chaney brought along his band\, which included Ella Webster (fiddle)\, Kyle Kleinman (mandolin)\, Joel Murtaugh (upright bass) and James Gooding (drums). Acclaimed Kentucky musician (and former bandmate) Aaron Bibelhauser also makes an appearance. \nWith this pivot in his tone and intent compared to his 2021 debut album\, Mercy\, Chaney sees this current path as more in-tune with what he’s not only wanted to do all along\, but has slowly shifted towards in recent years amid endless touring and performing. \n“I was green [while recording Mercy]. I didn’t really know what I was doing\,” Chaney admits. “And\, by the grace of so many people around me\, we were able to get some really great string band music on [that album].” \nSince Mercy\, Chaney has added a full drum kit to his band and live show\, something that was done to enhance his sound and stage presence — this thunderous beat to accompany the sorrowful songs. \n“If I have drums\, then we’re going to do it all the way\,” Chaney says. “And that unlocked some capabilities for me as a writer to pursue a sound that I don’t think I’ve heard yet.” \nAs of late\, Chaney has returned to his hometown of Catlettsburg\, Kentucky (population: 1\,780). The tiny Appalachian community lies along the shores of the Ohio and Big Sandy rivers\, at the crossroads of the borders of West Virginia\, Ohio and The Bluegrass State. \n“I think where I’m from shows through in everything that I do\,” Chaney says. “And if you want to write songs where that is going to come through\, then I feel I need to be around my roots.” \nFor Chaney\, even though he’s only in his mid-twenties\, his journey has been long and bountiful already. From growing up in rural Appalachia to going to welding school\, only to leave it behind and take a leap of faith when an opportunity to pursue music emerged. \nThat life-changing decision led to Chaney hitting the road and finding work at The Burl\, a storied Lexington music venue. Chaney has come full circle with The Burl\, by selling out the space on multiple occasions to fervent crowds\, including the large outdoor stage. \nWith In the Shadow of the Mountain being the latest milestone for Chaney\, what remains is this driven musician in search of not only himself and his sound\, but also an audience just as hungry — for something new\, something different\, and yet something so familiar. \n“In a lot of ways\, things have gone extremely far. And yet\, so many things have remained the same\,” Chaney reflects. “And that’s been the beauty of the journey.”

DESCRIPTION:RB Morris is a poet and songwriter\, solo performer and band leader\, and a sometimes playwright and actor from Knoxville\, Tennessee. He has published books of poetry including Early Fires (Iris Press)\, Keeping The Bees Employed\, and The Mockingbird Poems (Rich Mountain Bound)\, and music albums including Spies Lies and Burning Eyes\, and his most recent solo project Rich Mountain Bound. He wrote and acted in The Man Who Lives Here Is Looney\, a one-man play taken from the life and work of James Agee\, and was instrumental in founding a park dedicated to Agee in Knoxville. Morris served as the Jack E. Reese Writer-in-Residence at The University of Tennessee from 2004-2008\, and was inducted into the East Tennessee Writers Hall of Fame in 2009. He currently lives in Knoxville with his wife and daughter.

DESCRIPTION:The Tenos:\nAt nine years old\, our son\, Andy\, decided he wanted to play the banjo. This was the beginning of a new and exciting adventure for the whole family. He inspired us all to learn a new instrument and play bluegrass music together for fun and enjoyment! We played our first public performance on July 4th\, 2012\, at the Museum of Appalachia in Norris\, Tennessee! Since then\, we’ve played at Rocky Branch Community Center\, Dollywood’s BBQ & Bluegrass Festival\, Museum of Appalachia’s Fall Homecoming\, David West’s Ciderville Farm and Home Show\, TV and radio shows\, various conventions\, festivals\, service groups\, many churches\, and a variety of other venues. We recorded our first CD several years ago and we are currently in the process of recording another! Our music consists of traditional bluegrass\, old-time\, and gospel songs with close family harmonies that you will love and enjoy!

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special - 8/8 - Robinella
DESCRIPTION:Robinella’s career began with a sort of luck that rarely comes to most artists within their lifetime. What started out as a simple husband-and-wife duo fresh out of college quickly grew to a full-fledged band that blended Bluegrass\, Country and Jazz. The combination of Robinella’s honey-sweet vocals with violin\, mandolin\, bass\, drums and piano captivated audiences\, thus creating the ever popular Robinella & the CC Stringband. \nThey released their first album\, self-titled Robinella and The CC Stringband\, in 2000\, which quickly followed\, No Saint\, No Prize in 2001. Both were on the independent label Big Gulley Records. With a few simple twists of fate\, what followed was a whirlwind of rapid success – Columbia Records liked what they heard and signed Robinella in 2002. The label took seven songs from the band’s two prior albums and released them as the CD Blanket for My Soul and then released a full album in 2003\, Robinella and the CC Stringband. This led to a national tour including opening for such artists as Bob Dylan\, Willie Nelson\, Earl Scruggs\, Nickel Creek\, Robert Earl Keen\, Kasey Chambers\, Del McCoury and Rodney Crowell as well as an appearance on “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” and a music video on CMT for their hit single\, “Man Over”. She also performed on NPR’s “Mountain Stage\,” appeared on the Grand Ole Opry and performed on PBS’s “SoundStage.” In 2006\, Robinella was nominated for “Emerging Artist of the Year” at the Americana Music Awards and released her fourth album\, “Solace for the Lonely”\, on Dualtone Records in Nashville. \nBut then life\, as it has a tendency to do\, threw a few curveballs her way. She became a mom and a couple of years later\, she and her husband/musical partner split up with a new record almost completed. Exhausted and somewhat disillusioned with the industry and its promises\, it was time to regroup\, redefine and get back to her roots. So she returned to her home\, the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains\, and got back in touch with what she truly wanted – love\, family\, friendship\, music\, art\, truth. \nWith that comes her latest release\, “Fly Away Bird”\, her most mature work. However\, within the melancholy and touches of sadness there is not true despair. DESCRIPTION:Redd & The Paper Flowers is an Appalachian Folk / Livingroom Folk band from Knoxville\, Tennessee with members Katie Adams (upright bass)\, Colleen d’Alelio (cello)\, Gavin Gregg (mandolin)\, and Redd Daugherty (guitar). \nThe band met in 2022 through a local open mic and mutual friends\, and they just released their debut album\, Appalachian Bell Jar\, a record that is a testament to East Tennessee and greater Appalachia’s beauty\, struggles with government support\, and their experiences in the area. \nThe band has grown extremely close over the past three years\, particularly in touring: In 2025 alone\, they’re on the road for 22 weeks out of the year. The band also grew through the tragedy of Redd Daugherty losing her dear friend\, Jason Cooper\, who owned a local Knoxville music store named Rush’s Music\, which has been a staple of the Knoxville music community since 1958. From Coop’s tragic death\, Redd found out he willed her the business\, his estate\, and his dog\, Ando\, who passed in April 2024. DESCRIPTION:Although Jay Clark went to college for 11.5 years and has a PhD in wildlife ecology\, he somehow ended up striking a balance between careers in music & science. Jay grew up in Winchester\, Tennessee\, near where the western escarpment of the Cumberland Plateau crosses from Tennessee into Alabama. His dad was a Cumberland Presbyterian minister for 42 years. His mom an English teacher. Church played a huge roll in Jay’s upbringing. It was in the church where Jay learned to sing & in the mountains where he felt closest to God. Jay wrote his first song in 1990. He didn’t know how to play guitar\, so he taught himself to play in order to put music to his first song. That song was the first of many. \nJay has been a staple in the East Tennessee music scene for more than 20 years. During his college years\, Jay not only trapped & conducted research on black bears in the Smokies\, but also played in a couple of different bluegrass bands\, most notably a brother-style duo with Keith Garrett (currently of The Boxcars) and later in a bluegrass band\, The Stringbeans\, with Robinella and Cruz Contreras (currently of The Black Lillies). Since releasing his first record in 2004 (Pen to Paper)\, Jay has supplemented his career as a scientist with performing his songs across the Southeast & southern Appalachia. Presently\, Jay plays a number of his shows with his band\, Jay Clark & the Tennessee Tree Beavers\, which features Greg Horne on lead guitar & Daniel Kimbro on upright bass. Jay recently released his fifth recording\, Of Mountains & Heartbreak (2016). He still uses the other side of his brain as an adjunct professor in the Biology Department at Maryville College. Jay resides in the foothills of the Smokies on 31.5 acres in Rockford\, TN\, with his wife\, Stacy\, and their pack of rescue hounds.

From the age of five\, Holley worked various jobs: picking up trash at a drive-in movie theatre\, washing dishes\, and cooking. He lived in a whiskey house\, on the state fairgrounds\, and in several foster homes. His early life was chaotic and Holley was never afforded the pleasure of a real childhood. \nSince 1979\, Holley has devoted his life to the practice of improvisational creativity. His art and music\, born out of struggle\, hardship\, but perhaps more importantly\, out of furious curiosity and biological necessity\, has manifested itself in drawing\, painting\, sculpture\, photography\, performance\, and sound. Holley’s sculptures are constructed from found materials in the oldest tradition of African American sculpture. Objects\, already imbued with cultural and artistic metaphor\, are combined into narrative sculptures that commemorate places\, people\, and events. His work is now in collections of major museums throughout the country\, on permanent display in the United Nations\, and been displayed in the White House Rose Garden. In January of 2014\, Holley completed a one-month artist-in-residence with the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation in Captiva Island\, Florida\, site of the acclaimed artist’s studio. \n \nLee Bains will also join us this day!

DESCRIPTION:Tim Decker is originally from Jonesborough\, TN now resides in Erwin Tn\, with his wife Crystal. He started playing Piano at the age of 9. Progressing to Banjo and Guitar in his teen years he won 2nd place in the Kentucky State Banjo Championships in Middlesboro\, Ky junior division. He attended East Tennessee State University (E.T.S.U.) as a music major and performed with the E.T.S.U Bluegrass Program under Jack Tottle. He played country music on the road on semiprofessional circuits and showcased twice in Nashville\, Tn for major record labels with 2 different country acts in the early 1990’s. In 2012 Tim was half of the duo of “Decker and Skinner and the Blue Ridge Cut Ups” which appeared on the Song of the Mountains television show with Tim White. During that time\, he raised a family and worked until taking early retirement and reentered the genre of Bluegrass Music. Tim’s influences are Bill Monroe\, John Duffey\, Charlie Waller\, Red Smiley\, Tony Rice\, Earl Scruggs\, J.D Crowe and Don Reno. \n \n

DESCRIPTION:Four Leaf Peat is Tennessee’s premier Traditional Irish Band and has been performing locally and regionally since 2004! Traditional Irish music ranges from vibrant dance tunes to soulful songs\, and Four Leaf Peat’s performances are always marked by a keen sense of the tradition\, mixed with just the right amount of influence from the rich musical history of East Tennessee. Four Leaf Peat’s unique sound is a result of its members’ various musical backgrounds\, and their continued passion for traditional Irish music. By taking all of their years of musical training\, and building on Irish influences like The Bothy Band\, Planxty\, Flying Cloud & Silly Wizard\, to more modern twists on Traditional music such as Dervish\, Open the Door for Three & Lunasa; Four Leaf Peat has built its own brand of Irish music which celebrates the musical bridge that spans the Atlantic. \n \nDaniel Kimbro:\nI live in East Tennessee. I have two kids\, a whining\, braying hound dog\, and I have a wife who tolerates my making the pursuit of music my career and lifestyle. \nI play the bass\, mainly. I started out on the guitar\, but the first cover band I auditioned for said\, “we could use a bass player.” \nI grew up in places called Morristown and White Pine in East Tennessee. \nMy parents fed me on a steady diet of bass and crappie fishing\, The Stanley Brothers\, Van Halen\, Flatt & Scruggs\, W.A. Mozart\, The Police\, New Grass Revival\, Guy Clark\, and Townes Van Zandt\, among many others. Mom taught me the recorder and I played the trombone in the 5th grade. We had a family bluegrass band called “Mountain Soul” in which I played mostly guitar\, and then some bass. Dad drove us all over East Tennessee with our plywood bass strapped to the roof of our car. One time we drove into a parking garage and forgot it was up there. I stopped playing trombone in college and immediately got laid. Speaking of getting laid\, back to bluegrass… \nOur family band played only the finest backwoods general stores\, swap meets\, cake walks\, Civil War reenactments\, volunteer fire-halls\, tanning bed salons\, Cocke County family reunions (we crashed one just to meet a really good clawhammer banjoist)\, and one massively awkward Seventh Day Adventist church service…I wouldn’t trade the times on stage with my parents and brothers for anything in the world. I would trade some of the food though. \nI began my “formal” music education in 2001 at the University of Tennessee\, which is where I began studying the double bass. I went to school for way too many years and managed to graduate with a degree and a half in Strings Performance and Studio Music and Jazz\, though I’ll say I’ve learned more in the last 10 years than I did in the previous 25. I’m grateful to my college bass professor\, Rusty Holloway\, for the invaluable lessons he taught me about how to learn and perform music\, and how to be a team player. \nDuring college and after\, I’ve been fortunate to travel and play with many different groups all across the U.S. and Canada\, Northern Europe/Scandinavia\, and Japan. During a tour with the Lovell Sisters Band I had the privilege of playing in front of perennial Grammy award-winning resophonic guitarist Jerry Douglas\, and he asked me to join his band in 2013. I’m grateful to Jerry\, and thanks in no small part to him I’ve been fortunate enough to share the stage (or at least sit around and pick) with many of the folks I grew up listening to. \nIn March of 2017 I was asked to handle bass duties on the Transatlantic Sessions 2017 US Tour\, where I had the honor of subbing for bass great and personal hero Danny Thompson. During that tour I found myself accompanying Sir Aly Bain\, James Taylor\, Jerry Douglas\, Alison Krauss\, Rodney Crowell\, Mary Chapin Carpenter\, Roseanne Cash\, John Paul White\, Sarah Jarosz\, Aoife O’Donovan\, The Milk Carton Kids\, Declan O’Rourke\, Karen Matheson\, Maura O’Connell\, Joe Newberry\, Russ Barenburg\, John Doyle\, James Mackintosh\, John McCukser\, Michael McGoldrick\, and Donald Shaw. That was a whirlwind full of amazing music and lovely people. It is really fun to ask for more James Taylor in your monitor. \nIn 2014 or so I was introduced to Martin Harley by our mutual friend Sam Lewis. Martin and I hit it off and made a couple records\, and now I go to England and Canada a fair bit. There’s lots of rule following\, traffic cameras\, and boot/hat fashion advice flowing both ways (oft ignored).Sam\, Martin and I are currently working on a trio record. That’s right ladies. Trio. \nIn 2018 we in the Jerry Douglas Band were nominated for a Grammy award in the the “Best Contemporary Instrumental Record.” We lost. \nIn late 2018 I was asked to join the Flatt & Scruggs tribute band The Earls of Leicester. I said yes. \nIn early 2019 I was asked to once again step into Danny Thompson’s huge brogues and perform with the Transatlantic Sessions for the UK tour throughout Scotland\, England and Ireland\, alongside featured artists Tim O’brien\, Molly Tuttle\, Gretchen Peters\, Cara Dillon and Paul McKenna. Then we did it again in 2020\, right before Covid\, alongside Tommy Emmanuel\, Cahalen Morrison\, Sierra Hull\, Rachel Sermanni\, and Cathy Jordan. I asked Cathy Jordan to marry me. She said no. \nThough they don’t likely remember me\, I’ve been able to make music with the likes of Brendon James Wright\, Sam Lewis\, Martin Harley\, Robinella\, Hector Qirko\, R.B. Morris\, Casey Driessen\, Larkin Poe\, Thom Hell\, John Frazier\, Matt Menefee\, The Whistles & The Bells\, Jeff Sipe\, John Medeski\, Jason Isbell\, Maggie Longmire\, Your Mom\, John Hiatt\, Sarah Siskind\, …and I’ve been able to play some remarkable venues: The Ryman Auditorium\, The Grand Ole Opry\, The Tennessee Theater\, Bonnaroo\, Telluride Bluegrass Festival\, MerleFest\, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass\, StordFest\, The Vancouver Island Folk Festival\, The Kate Wolf Folk Festival\, The Edmonton Folk Festival\, New Orleans Jazz Fest\, The Blue Note Tokyo\, Chateau St. Michelle\, Jammin at Hippie Jacks\, The Bijou Theater\, Rochester International Jazz Festival\, and a bunch of others I can’t remember right now…anyway\, it’s been fun\, and it’s getting better all the time. DESCRIPTION:Jeanine Fuller is a vocalist\, songwriter and performer from Brooklyn\, New York\, but is now based in Knoxville\, Tennessee. \nJeanine uses her vast musical influences in Soul\, R & B\, Funk\, Blues\, Jazz\, Gospel & Rock to fuse her eclectic vocal sound. \nShe has been singing as long as she can remember\, since about the age of four or five for family\, family friends and neighbors. However\, Jeanine really began singing since the age of eight in the C.O.G.I.C.\, Pentecostal\, as well later on in Baptist\, Methodist and Non-Denominational churches\, leading songs in the choir and singing solos. \nBeing reared for a while in Fayetteville\, NC\, it was in NC\, where her talents were groomed. She was taught to play the violin and later a little bit of piano. However\, it was her classical voice training from private teachers as a teenager\, that eventually led to her winning a national music competition and a four year scholarship to attend the duration of her high school career and college at the arts conservatory\, the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. She earned a special concentration in Classical voice performance in addition to her high school diploma. \nShe was also a college student at the music conservatory\, Manhattan School of Music in NYC\, but it wasn’t before long she was in demand as a touring artist. \nJeanine draws inspiration from greats like\, Etta James\, Billie Holiday\, Sarah Vaughan\, Dianne Reeves\, Chaka Khan\, Michael Jackson\, Stevie Wonder and most definitely Prince. \nShe has had the pleasure of performing for countless festivals\, such as featured artist for the Women in Jazz Jam Festival\, Knox Pridefest and the honor of sharing stages with notable\, Grammy award artists\, such as her jazz idol\, Dianne Reeves\, Brian Blade and Son Little. \nJeanine draws her soulful\,engaging performances from vast experiences in theater\,jazz\, gospel and classical ensembles\, touring the US and abroad in professional touring companies\, as well as cover bands & her own cabaret style shows. \nIn 2019\, Jeanine founded a working Soul/Funk Tribute band\, Jeanine Fuller & the True Funk SOULdiers.
