An Extra Helping of the Blue Plate Special : Paul Lee Kupfer “I Saw Your Face In The Moon”

Paul Lee Kupfer took time from his busy touring schedule to stop by the Blue Plate Special and share some tunes. Paul is a West Virginia native, and he lived in Pennsylvania, California, and Montana before settling in Knoxville. When he’s not on the road as a solo singer-songwriter, Paul is a member of The Bus Driver Tour, as well as part of Ian Thomas & Band Of Drifters. Paul has recently released a new solo album, “Where the Wind Goes” (9/16). In this video, Paul ended his Blue Plate set by recruiting the members of Barefoot Sanctuary to help out on the Mac Wiseman tune, “I Saw Your Face In The Moon”. An Extra Helping of the Blue Plate Special : Barefoot Sanctuary “All Creatures Of Our God And King”

Barefoot Sanctuary brought their “Traditional Bluegrass with a fun new twist” to the Blue Plate stage. They blend styles to create their own sound, and the band is the lifelong dream of Evie Andrus, who started playing fiddle at age 6. After years of teaching, session work, and being on the road with several different artists, Evie now fronts her own band, and has produced her own record. The double album, “Songs For My Father” (6/16), includes 10 of her favorite old-time, bluegrass, country and folk standards on one disc and 10 of her most beloved hymns on the other. This video is the hymn, “All Creatures Of Our God And King”, which appears on the new CD. Helping Evie on stage is Dave Rasnake: Bass, Brad Hitch: Banjo, and Camryn Cornett: mandolin/guitar. An Extra Helping of the Blue Plate Special : Seth Walker “Blow Wind Blow”

Seth Walker is a blues singer, guitarist, and songwriter from New Orleans, originally from Burlington, NC. He joined us recently on the Blue Plate Special and performed some tunes from his latest release, “Gotta Get Back”. He told us about working with his family on the song featured in this video, “Blow Wind Blow” by explaining, “Nine records later, we have finally gotten in the studio as a family unit and played some music together. My father composed the arrangements, played cello, and my mother and sister played violins. I can’t tell you how excited I am about this.” (Since he was appearing solo, Seth also joked that we would have to use our imagination on those orchestral sounds.) An Extra Helping of the Blue Plate Special : Fly By Night Rounders “Mama Don’t Allow”

The Fly By Night Rounders, stringband veterans of the Asheville, NC busking scene, recently visited the Blue Plate Special. And for an extra-special treat, accompanying Rounders Chris Rodrigues (guitar) and Vaden Landers (banjo) was Abby The Spoon Lady. They closed their set with their version of this tune, “Mama Don’t Allow”, which is sometimes credited to Charles “Cow Cow”Davenport, back in 1929. We say whoever wrote it would be proud when they heard this! An Extra Helping of the Blue Plate Special : Outlaw Ritual “Kingdom Come”

Outlaw Ritual is a self described “Electric and acoustic / country / folk / Americana / rock & roll band” based out of right here in Knoxville. Comprised of Matt Hagar on vocals, guitars, banjo, and percussion, and Olivia Garriga on the doghouse bass, they are veteran street performers and have been playing together for about four years. They see busking on the street as their “day job” and Matt says their nighttime shows are “…the same songs (we play on the street), but louder”. The Blue Plate Special audience was treated to selections from their new self-titled CD, and were additionally rewarded with this brand new tune called “Kingdom Come”. An Extra Helping of the Blue Plate Special : Hollis Creek Revival “Home”

Hollis Creek Revival made the drive to Knoxville from Dothan, Alabama to be on the Blue Plate Special, and shared songs like this one, “Home”, from their debut album, “In The River”. Founder Brandon Kelley Kelley formed the band in 2014 with his friends Jacob Patillo (electric/acoustic guitar, banjo, mandolin) and Clint Singleton (bass, acoustic/electric guitar). (Clint is from Knoxville, by the way!) Brandon, who spent several years doing missionary work, told us that all of the proceeds from album and merchandise sales are being donated to fund music schools in Central and South America. An Extra Helping of the Blue Plate Special : Lara Hope & The Ark-Tones “Luckiest Girl In Town”

From Kingston, NY, “Rockabilly, Roots Rock n’ Roll, Rhythm & Blues Outfit” Lara Hope and the Ark-Tones visited the Blue Plate Special stage. They were named the “Best Up-And-Coming band in 2015” by Hudson Valley Magazine, and nominated for “Best Rockabilly Female” at the 2016 Ameripolitan Music Awards. “Luck Maker”, the band’s first album, is in regular rotation here at WDVX, and we were excited to hear that Lara Hope and the Ark-Tones are headed back into the studio this December. The Ark-Tones get their name from the combination of Lara’s former Rockabilly band The Champtones, and upright bassist Matt’s international Psychobilly act The Arkhams. The band names are not the only merging going on, as Lara and Matt got married about a year ago. That leads us to the tune in this video, “Luckiest Girl In The World”, which was a wedding gift from Lara to Matt! An Extra Helping of the Blue Plate Special : Miss Tess “I Can’t Help Myself”

Miss Tess and her band, The Talkbacks, brought her original “Classic country and honky-tonk, southern rhythm & blues, New Orleans jazz and swing, and sounds of swamp pop and early rock n’ roll music” to the Blue Plate stage. This tune, “I Can’t Help Myself” is on her latest release, “Baby, We All Know”. Previous description aside, Miss Tess is hard to categorize, and she says “Many times after the show somebody will come up to compliment the band and ask me what kind of music we just played. After mumbling through a few different genres I usually just tell them it’s my music and hope they enjoyed the show”.

The Talkbacks are Thomas Bryan Eaton on guitar (also co-producer of the new album), Geoff Henderson on bass, and Andrew Guterman on drums. Find out more about Miss Tess and her music at: http://www.misstessmusic.com/#home-se…

Guy Marshall is an Americana band from right here in East Tennessee that has rapidly gained a dedicated following, as well as rave reviews from the music press. Husband and wife team Adam and Serrenna McNulty make up the core of Guy Marshall, and regularly do shows with a cast of talented friends. Guy Marshall was Adam McNulty’s grandfather, and according to the band, Guy lived in a different America, and Adam writes songs of a time in which family and honor meant more. Their 2015 debut album is called “The Depression Blues”, and during this visit to the Blue Plate Special stage, Guy Marshall introduced a couple of brand new tunes, including this one, “John Wayne”. Helping out on fiddle (also from East Tennessee) is Frank Bronson – one of the talented friends referred to earlier. Find out more about Guy Marshall on their website at http://www.guymarshall.net/
