Katie’s 2016 Favorites

Katie Cauthen

Hey y’all – Katie here, WDVX Program Director and host of “The Category Stomp” on Monday nights 7-10pm. In the past, I have always been a bit hesitant when it comes to making “Best Of” year-end lists. It is always a daunting task to sort through all of the great music we are exposed to at WDVX in any given year. That being said, I managed to put together a list of some of my favorite albums & songs of 2016. They aren’t in any specific order – cue my indecisiveness – but I hope you enjoy and tune in to hear music included on the below lists (and beyond) every Monday night on “The Category Stomp”. Here goes nothin’…. (again, in no particular order!)

The WDVX Blue Plate Special is Hitting the Road

blue-plate

Every new year brings change and in 2017 it’s going to happen at the Blue Plate Special where real live music has been entertaining you nearly every day for the past 12 years. It’s going to be good…once the dust settles!  The Visitor Center, where the Blue Plate Special stage is located, is being remodeled beginning in January to create a more useful and comfortable space for visitors and Blue Plate Special audiences. That means the Blue Plate Special live shows are going to take a break beginning January 2. You’ll still hear Blue Plate Special programs on the radio at noon, we will have live in studio guests, and we’re planning some very special Blue Plate Special Road Shows throughout the community. Thanks to all of you who are part of the show as audience members…we will miss seeing you. But we’ll be back soon. And there will be a big party when the new space is done in a couple months…so just keep listening to WDVX for news about that and the Blue Plate Special Road Shows starting in January.

Here’s the remaining Blue Plate Special schedule:

12/29 – Knox County Jug Stompers / Sam Hatmaker

12/30 – Lacy Green / Barefoot Sanctuary

12/31  – Kim Smith and David Boettcher / Cassidy Diana

Suzy Bogguss’ Swingin’ Little Christmas is a joyous, festive evening of traditional songs and spontaneity with one of country music’s most pristine and evocative vocalists. With the release of the Illinois native’s 1989 major label debut, Somewhere Between, Suzy quickly became one of the key artists that defined those golden days of ’90s country. She scored a string of Top 10 singles with country radio staples like “Outbound Plane,” “Drive South,” “Hey Cinderella,” “Letting Go” and “Aces,” and her 1991 album of that name was certified platinum.

The musicianship showcased in Suzy’s Christmas show is jaw-dropping, and her rich and fluid voice takes listeners through sentimental songs like: “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” to her own raucous “Two Step Round The Christmas Tree.” It’s a fun-filled night of all the Christmas classics sprinkled with some of Suzy’s hits through the years and select songs from her recent release, Lucky. The whole family will enjoy this Swingin’ Little Christmas Show!

Grammy award-winning and Platinum selling artist Suzy Bogguss is one to constantly chase the muse wherever it may lead. She has covered Country, Swing, Jazz, Folk, Americana and Roots music with style and grace. The live performance of her American Folk Songbook album has been lauded by fans, critics and buyers as “a show not to miss!” Her latest album Lucky is a heartfelt homage to the songwriting of Merle Haggard. With her holiday show, the musicianship is jaw-dropping as always while Suzy’s rich and fluid voice takes us through sentimental songs like: “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” to her own raucous “Two Step Round The Christmas Tree”.  It’s a fun-filled night of all the holiday classics sprinkled with some of Suzy’s hits through the years. The whole family will enjoy this Swinging’ Little Christmas Show!

Suzy’s appeal has never wavered and her fan base continues to grow with constant touring around the globe including regular appearances on Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion tour and the Grand Ole Opry! Rolling Stone magazine included her in The Top 48 Things We Saw At SXSW 2014 and said “She’s as country as they come.” Her 2015 set was also a Top Pick by Rolling Stone again as well as the Austin Chronicle. She truly is an artist that knows no boundaries and always leaves everyone wondering what she’ll do next!

An Extra Helping of the Blue Plate Special : Hollis Creek Revival “Home”

Hollis Creek Revival made the drive to Knoxville from Dothan, Alabama to be on the Blue Plate Special, and shared songs like this one, “Home”, from their debut album, “In The River”. Founder Brandon Kelley Kelley formed the band in 2014 with his friends Jacob Patillo (electric/acoustic guitar, banjo, mandolin) and Clint Singleton (bass, acoustic/electric guitar). (Clint is from Knoxville, by the way!) Brandon, who spent several years doing missionary work, told us that all of the proceeds from album and merchandise sales are being donated to fund music schools in Central and South America. Learn more about Hollis Creek Revival at their website http://www.holliscreekrevival.com/

The WDVX Blue Plate Special is a live performance radio show held at noon, Monday through Saturday, at the WDVX studio inside the Knoxville Visitor’s Center. Come and play your part as an audience member in the radio show that’s popular worldwide! Love me some WDVX!”
