SUMMARY:Shinyribs — Live at the Bijou — 10/6
DESCRIPTION:Tickets Here! \nShinyribs reassembles the American song bag like a picker in a junkyard; Texas singer-songwriter\, East Tx blues\, Louisiana swamp n’ rhythm\, honky tonk\, Oklahoma swing\, Golden-Triangle Cajun\, and Arkansas jazz are all filtered through the singular vision of Kevin Russell\, one of Austin’s most celebrated and criminally underrated singer-songwriters. \nThe Austin-based supergroup has entered a bold new chapter with the small baller “Shortribs” configuration — a tightly arranged powerhouse built to showcase what has always been at the heart of the Shinyribs experience: Russell’s legendary songwriting chops\, his iconic voice\, and the infamous hi-jinks of the self-proclaimed world’s oldest living male exotic dancer. Hip shaking\, booty twerking\, arm flapping\, high kicking and karate chopping good times are guaranteed to send you home with aching cheeks and tear-stained laughter. \nAt the rhythmic core is Keith Langford on drums — Russell’s musical partner of 30 years\, a bond forged in the crucible of legendary\, The Gourds— and as essential to the Shinyribs sound as the backbeat itself. Mason Hankamer holds down the low end on bass\, pulling double duty as co-producer of the last 3 Ribs platters and musical director\, tightening the arrangements and the show into something leaner and more purposeful than ever. The Delta Dawns — both hailing from the famous Memphis/Mississippi alluvial plain — have been elevated to a full dynamic singing sisterhood: Kellee Broadway\, who doubles on percussion\, and Schaefer Llana\, who shakes the chandeliers and plays some guitar too. Eric Baker\, a rising star in the Austin scene\, frisks the pianoforte like a long-lost Leon Russell. Rounding out the band — and perhaps its most exciting new voice — is lead guitarist and pedal steel wizard Cat Clemons. \nRussell himself says it best: “Clemons\, beyond just notes and licks galore\, possesses the ability to communicate psychically with audiences. It’s really a feat to be experienced. More than just being able to say you were there\, one will be able to try and describe their experience.” \nA Shinyribs show these days runs the gamut — from tongue-in-cheek winks and nudges to poignant stories of family\, loss\, grief\, and love. The poetic joy joins the musical melancholy like a rainbow over the swamp. Above and below\, a human collaboration of deep knowledge and soul\, expressed with a grace and groove unlike anything else. \nShinyribs has been nominated and won a slew of awards and honors\, but you will be the one going home with that Shiny trophy feeling. We are so excited you get to see Shinyribs soon. Lucky you! \nIf you’ve never heard of Shinyribs\, that’s a good thing. Now you’ve got something to look forward to. Let’s try and keep this a secret. We don’t want a bunch of dilettantes and phonies ruining our good time. \nDISCOGRAPHY: Well After Awhile (2010) · Gulf Coast Museum (2013) · Okra Candy (2015) · I Got Your Medicine (2017) · The Kringle Tingle (2018) · Fog & Bling (2019) · Late Night TV Gold (2021) · Transit Damage (2023) · Leaving Time (2025) \nReal Alligator\, Shinyribs’ 10th album\, is due Autumn 2026.

SUMMARY:The Brook & The Bluff — Mill & Mine — 10/6
DESCRIPTION:Tickets Here! \nThe Brook & The Bluff return to their rock & roll roots with Werewolf – a high-voltage\, live- inspired album that turns up the amps\, pushes the tempo\, and howls in four-part harmony. Fueled by the sharp songwriting and stacked vocals that have defined their catalog\, the collection captures the raw\, supercharged energy of the band’s concerts. \nAfter nearly a decade of nonstop touring – earning hundreds of millions of streams with fan favorites like “Halfway Up” and “Everything Is Just a Mess” – the band regrouped in Nashville\, meeting every morning to write and rehearse like their early days in Birmingham\, Alabama. Life unfolded in the background: weddings\, divorces\, real-world growing pains. Inside the room\, it was all music. \nThe band channels the swamp rock spirit of legendary artists like Creedence\, Petty\, and The Eagles\, delivering loud\, melodic\, deeply human songs like lead single “Super Bowl Sunday” – a crashing\, introspective anthem about ego and emotional blind spots. “The goal was to treat the record like a live set\,” says frontman Joseph Settine. And that’s exactly what they’ve done. Armed with a new album and an unflinching spirit\, The Brook & The Bluff are ready to hit the road again to continue their 2026 Werewolf tour. The band boasts a history of sold out headline\ntours across the continent\, a number of major festival performances\, and have supported artists like Noah Kahan\, Mt. Joy\, The Avett Brothers\, Ashe\, and Rainbow Kitten Surprise.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special — 10/8 — The Pink Stones / Four First Names
DESCRIPTION:“We believe in some pretty strict rules\,” says Pink Stones frontman Hunter Pinkston. “We also believe in breaking them. This band was built on reimagining tradition\, on honoring the old ways while pushing them someplace new.” \nOn their intoxicating new album\, Thank the Lord…it’s The Pink Stones\, Pinkston and his bandmates do precisely that\, offering up a joyful\, adventurous take on ’60s twang that blurs the lines between cosmic country\, folk\, bluegrass\, soul\, and psychedelic rock. Recorded once again with co-producer/engineer Henry Barbe (Drive-By Truckers\, Deerhunter) in the band’s hometown of Athens\, GA\, the collection showcases a more deliberate\, mature side of The Pink Stones’ sound\, one that reflects all the personal and sonic growth that’s defined the last few years for the hard touring five-piece. The songs on Thank the Lord… are humble and timeless\, full of wry\, sardonic wit and rich\, evocative storytelling\, and the performances are easygoing and amiable\, with an effortlessly natural feel that belies the masterful craftsmanship behind them. The result is a record that wears its influences proudly on its sleeve\, even as it a subverts expectation\, a work of poignant longing and playful humor that tips its cap to everyone from Merle Haggard and Earl Scruggs to Don Williams and The Byrds as it looks both forwards and backwards all at once. \n“A lot has changed since the last record\,” says Pinkston. “We’ve grown up\, traveled all over the world\, said goodbye to old bandmates and welcomed new ones. All of that’s helped our sound grow and evolve into what it is now.” \nStarted alone by Pinkston in his Athens apartment\, The Pink Stones quickly emerged to widespread acclaim with their 2021 debut\, Introducing…The Pink Stones\, which earned praise from Rolling Stone\, Under The Radar\, No Depression\, American Songwriter\, and more. The band returned two years later with their similarly well-received sophomore effort\, You Know Who\, which featured an appearance from Nikki Lane and landed on Bandcamp’s Best Country Music of 2023 list. Dates across the US\, Canada\, Europe\, and Australia followed\, including festival appearances from 30A to Hopscotch\, and while the band’s rapid growth could be traced in large part back to the undeniable energy of their raucous\, freewheeling live shows\, working at such a relentless pace came with a price. \n“We were touring constantly the year after You Know Who came out\,” Pinkston recalls\, “and some of the guys realized that wasn’t the best fit for them. That forced me to find the kind of players who really wanted to be on the road all the time\, and it forced me to step up and play more lead guitar\, which naturally affected the kind of music we were making together.” \nWith new additions Caleb Boese (pedal steel) and Michael Alexander (drums) joining Pinkston (guitar/vocals) and longtime compatriots Adam Wayton (bass) and Neil Golden (keyboards)\, the band resumed touring at their usual breakneck speed\, working up tunes for roughly half the new record live before heading into the studio. \n“I wanted to keep things fresh for the recording process\, so even though we’d played a bunch of the songs on the road\, I made sure there was still plenty of material the guys hadn’t heard until it was time to record\,” says Pinkston. “There’s just something about the sound of a band finding the songs as they’re playing them for the first time that you can never recreate.” \nThat sense of raw discovery and excitement is plain to hear on Thank the Lord…\, which opens with the shuffling title track. Featuring mandolin and vocals from bluegrass phenom Wyatt Ellis\, the tune is laidback and self-assured\, dazzling in the depth and breadth of its musicianship without ever resorting to flashiness or cheap thrills. Pinkston’s tongue is planted firmly in cheek here as he gives thanks to God for the lover that’s made his life complete\, and it’s not the last time he’ll offer up a sly take on country music’s longstanding—and sometimes conflicted—relationship with religious imagery. The tender “Such A Sight” (featuring former Pink Stones pedal steel guitarist John Neff on dobro) finds Heaven right here on Earth\, while the waltzing “Start With Your Name” contemplates the ninth commandment’s prohibition on deceit and dishonesty\, and the puckish “Hometown Hotel” forgives itself for some good old-fashioned sinning. \n“I’ve never been religious\,” says Pinkston\, “but I’ve always been fascinated with those early country guys who sang gospel tunes and wore suits with crosses on them even while they were getting into some pretty immoral stuff. I wanted this album to touch on both sides of that coin.” \nDespite its flirtations with virtue and vice (Pinkston stands in front of a church on the cover\, casting a shadow with a subtle pair of horns)\, Thank the Lord… is\, at its heart\, a classic Pink Stones rumination on human connection\, on love\, loss\, and desire. The aching “Real Sad Movies\, Big Jet Planes” can’t seem to escape reminders of the one who got away; the honky-tonking “If I Can’t Win (With You)” learns to go it alone; the Latin-tinged “Cold Eye of Leaving” (featuring vocals from longtime Pink Stones manager Drew Beskin) watches love walk out the door; the bittersweet “Summer’s Love (Winter’s Pain)” comes face to face with loneliness; and the lilting “Hard To Kill” grapples with emotions that just won’t seem to fade. “It’s hard to kill / The way that you feel\,” Pinkston sings over soaring pedal steel and driving fiddle (played here by special guest Libby Weitnauer). “When love’s still real / But down went the deal.” \n“I’ve always tended to gravitate toward those kinds of stories as a writer\,” says Pinkston. “Heartbreak\, regret\, unrequited love\, that’s our wheelhouse.” \nAnd yet it’s perhaps the most hopeful tune on the record\, the effervescent “Too Busy\,” that best encapsulates the magic of Thank the Lord…\, with its infectious melody and double-timed chorus all delivered with the relaxed\, unhurried air of someone who’s found exactly what they want (and knows exactly how to hold onto it). \n“Our last record got really loud and fast and in your face at times\, but it was important to me that we lay back on this one\,” explains Pinkston. “The band played softer\, I sang softer\, and we just embraced the mystery of it all.” \nThat is\, of course\, until the song’s final seconds\, when the band’s gentle serenity gives way to an all-out psych-rock jam featuring Curtis Callis on banjo. It’s a brief\, but potent reminder: some rules are made to be broken. \n \nThe Secret City Improv Comedy Festival will be featuring Four First Names in a fully improvised musical!

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special — 10/13 — The Two Tracks
DESCRIPTION:Hailing from the eastern slope of the Bighorn Mountains in Wyoming—a state with more pronghorn than people—The Two Tracks have spent the last decade developing a powerful sound rooted in “thoughtful\, literate songwriting” (Relix).  \nLed by husband-and-wife Dave (guitar and cello) and Julie Huebner (guitar)\, the quartet is rounded out by bassist Taylor Phillips and drummer Fernando Serna\, fusing expressive storytelling\, sonorous four-part harmonies\, and a lively authenticity creating an “immeasurably rewarding experience” (American Songwriter). Dave’s classical cello training coupled with his love for bold bluegrass riffs and hooky rock melodies add a unique character to many of their arrangements. \n\n\nThe Two Tracks returned to Nashville\, TN to record their fifth studio album\, Seasons Unknown (released June 5\, 2026)\, once again working with their team consisting of grammy-nominated producer Will Kimbrough (Todd Snider\, Rodney Crowell)\, 5-time Grammy-winning engineer Sean Sullivan (Sturgill Simpson\, Molly Tuttle)\, and 4-time Grammy-winning mixer Trina Shoemaker (Sheryl Crow\, Tanya Tucker). The record delivers songs that feel lived-in and unguarded\, from the road-trip ready energy of the lead single “Mexico By Friday”\, to the album’s CSNY-inspired harmony-driven title track. From the social-political bluegrass anthem “Building Walls”\, to a stripped down acoustic duet “My Heart is Too Easy”\, which expresses a love never reciprocated.  Seasons Unknown expands on a discography that already includes four acclaimed records: The Two Tracks (2016)\, Postcard Town (2017)\, Cheers to Solitude (2020) which charted in the top 40 on Americana radio\, and It’s a Complicated Life (2023).   \nWith a touring history that spans the U.S. and abroad—including a performance at the World Expo in Dubai—The Two Tracks have graced premier stages such as Americanafest (TN)\, Kate Wolf Music Festival (CA)\, Albino Skunk Music Festival (SC)\, and Red Ants Pants (MT)\, among many others.  They’ve shared bills with Orville Peck\, Marshall Tucker Band\, Eilen Jewell\, The Brothers Comatose\, John McEuen\, Shook Twins\, and The Black Lilies\, consistently proving that their versatile sound can mesh with many differing genres.  \nAt the heart of The Two Tracks is a deep commitment to connection. Emanating out from their own strong friendship as a band\, they create joyful energetic performances that leave audiences  with the sense of having truly shared an experience—one that resonates long after the final note.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special — 10/15 — Music In Common / Leo Sawikin
DESCRIPTION:From the start\, concerts and unique live performance events have been the heartbeat of Music in Common. Our band is comprised of a rotating cast of all-star musicians and human beings who believe fervently in the power of music to connect people regardless of their differences. The venues we perform at are as diverse as the musicians in the band and the people in the audience. Festivals\, performing arts centers\, universities\, coffeehouses\, music clubs\, street corners\, houses of worship\, living rooms\, community centers\, and even a bomb shelter are just a sampling of the places where we’ve made music (see venue listing below). But the common denominator between them all is audience members connecting with one another\, leaving our shows inspired and hopeful (see testimonials below). \nMusic in Common’s genre-blending concerts showcase the many songs that have come out of our JAMMS sessions and other programs as well as originals written by band members and select covers aligned with the spirit of MIC to connect and uplift. The band tours as an acoustic duo all the way up to an eight-piece electric band and everything in between. \n \nNew York City is not known for being delicate\, but Manhattan-born singer-songwriter Leo Sawikin breaks that mold. His soulful explorations of life’s highs and lows\, of love’s exuberance and humbling loss\, take listeners on achingly familiar journeys. \nOn stage\, Leo is accompanied by his brother William Sawikin\, aka Professional Extra\, on keyboards\, drummer Max Yassky (Skorts /Abby Jeanne)\, bassist Nick Katz (BRKN LOVE) and Josh Cruz (Shyness / Blac Rabbit) on lead guitar. In the recording studio\, Leo and the band’s sound has been honed by master producer Phil Ek (Fleet Foxes / The Shins / Built to Spill)\, across three projects\, including the recently released EP\, The Edge of Everything\, as well as on his upcoming 2027 full length album. “Burning Love\,” the first single off this record\, is out now. \nIn 2024\, “Till You’re Somebody Else\,” the title track off Leo’s last album\, reached #1 on the Mediabase A/C Independent Artists Chart and #26 on Billboard’s AC Chart. Another highlight of that album was Leo’s most streamed track to date\, “The Same Mistakes\,” which still resonates with fans globally\, from the U.S. and U.K. to Brazil to Indonesia. Celeb Mix raved\, “…a low-slung\, softly gleaming guitar topped by Sawikin’s oh-so evocative voice\, at once tender and wistful…rolls into a delicious\, throbbing rhythm.” \nRecently\, Leo has toured the country opening solo for fellow singer-songwriter Jon McLaughlin at such storied venues as NYC’s City Winery and LA’s Troubadour. When he’s not on the road\, Leo and the band can be found playing the city’s small\, buzzy clubs and sought-after secret house parties. If you’re lucky enough to catch them\, you’ll be treated to ballads and bangers that bring an indie edge to a classic pop sensibility. In between gigs\, Leo can often be spotted at the Union Square Greenmarket\, sourcing the best ingredients for one of his famous pasta dinners.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special — 10/17 — Bristol Coon / Maya de Vitry
DESCRIPTION:Born and raised in Southern California\, Bristol Coon is a Nashville-based singer-songwriter who pulls influences from the sixties LA rock scene and vintage country music. He also has a foundation in jazz & blues which paints a colorful palette for this California Coastal Cowboy. \n \nOriginally from the green rolling hills of Lancaster County\, Pennsylvania\, Maya de Vitry is a Nashville-based fiddler-turned-songwriter with a voice that glides effortlessly between tenderness and strength. After a formative chapter of singing and songwriting with roots trio The Stray Birds (five recordings in eight years)\, she launched her solo career with her 2019 album Adaptations\, earning praise from Rolling Stone Country\, NPR Music\, and No Depression. Since then\, she has released three more full-length albums—How to Break a Fall (2020)\, Violet Light (2022)\, and The Only Moment (2024); an EP\, Infinite (2023); and multiple singles\, all of which are testaments to her personal reinvention and creative growth. \nEnergized by the spontaneity of live performance and a revelatory pursuit of truth in her lyric writing\, Maya de Vitry returns with her fifth full-length album\, All My Faith. Prioritizing presence and grit over studio polish\, she sounds joyously at home in the alt-country and indie-folk realms. Recorded and mixed by 5-time Grammy Award-winning engineer Sean Sullivan and self-produced by de Vitry\, All My Faith is a buoyant gathering of songs brought to life by a cast of her closest confidantes and collaborators. All My Faith will be released on de Vitry’s own Mad Maker Studio label on July 24. \n“I’d like my music to feel like you are invited into a lush living forest or into a remote river canyon where suddenly you are stripped of not only modern conveniences but also modern distractions. Where you can feel the essence of your own humanity and those around you. Where suddenly a stranger’s story becomes interesting\, or where you might choose teamwork and problem-solving and creativity over dogma. Where reciprocity and care start to feel more natural than just about anything else\,” she reflects. \nFrom canyons to kitchens\, from cold lakes to highway truck stops\, the songs form a vibrant collage of joy\, sorrow\, and gut-wrenching honesty. Whether spinning an inspirational tale about hungover bachelorettes at the Nashville airport or exploring the prison of our own adaptations\, de Vitry brings a grounded confidence and quiet charisma rooted in her belief in the power of song to change us.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special — 10/21 — Sam Hatmaker
DESCRIPTION:Born to a stand-up comedian and an actress\, Knoxville-raised Sam Hatmaker assumed from a very young age that everyone was just supposed to be on stage\, so she decided she would become a singer. At 10 years old\, her path became even more clear when she began performing in shows at Dollywood (even though by then she had figured out that not everyone had to be on stage). She moved to Nashville after signing her first publishing deal with Warner Chappell Music at the age of 16. In 2019 Sam recorded her debut EP with Grammy award-winning producer Nathan Chapman.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special — 10/22 — Libby Dale / Kelly and Sarah
DESCRIPTION:Libby Dale is the solo project of Libby Weitnauer – her “rippling Smoky Mountain voice” (WMOT) and GRAMMY-award winning fiddle playing have made Dale a fixture of Nashville’s Americana\, indie\, and country scenes. October 2\, 2026\, brought her highly anticipated full-length solo debut\, Freehand. Made in three parts with producers Thomas Bryan Eaton\, Will Johnson\, and Andrija Tokic\, the project was deftly woven together by GRAMMY-award winning mixing engineer Justin Francis. Freehand explores themes of love and self-forgiveness. \nRaised in Maryville\, Tennessee\, Dale honed her point of view in Chicago and New York City before returning to the Southeast\, moving to Nashville in 2020. A winding musical path has taken her through symphonies\, fiddler’s conventions\, the Grand Ole Opry\, New York City’s Broadway theaters\, and beyond. Since landing in Music City\, Weitnauer has toured and performed with acts like Kelsey Waldon and Margo Price; and she co-founded the critically-acclaimed indie folk-rock collective Dallas Ugly\, the primary outlet for her songwriting until now.  \nThe release of Freehand marks Dale’s first venture into sketching out her own LP.  Pedal steel\, cascading vocal harmonies\, and zippy orchestral strings intertwine with Weitnauer’s confident melodic sensibilities and unmistakable voice. Combining alt-country and folk pop influences\, Freehand would feel right at home among “indie twang” Americana from the earliest days of the format. Weitnauer’s fantastic sonic dreamland might be pinpointed where the voices of Nanci Griffith and Iris DeMent meet the roots-adjacent genre agnosticism of Big Thief. Freehand is a mission statement. Libby Dale’s contemplations and existential ponderings\, lift up all who listen – and encourage each of us to loosen our grips and let go. \n \nKelly and Sarah are twin sisters and country music musicians. They have been singing and performing since childhood\, and both hold Bachelor’s degrees in Music with private training in both classical and contemporary voice. The Duo began their professional music careers in June 2022 and have continued to grow their presence in Nashville’s music scene. As songwriters and recording artists\, their music draws from their small hometown Illinois culture with modern country influences. \nIf you visit Nashville\, you are likely to encounter a performance by Kelly & Sarah\, twin sisters known for their signature blend of rich harmonies and engaging stage presence. From performing popular covers in Nashville’s renowned honky-tonks to showcasing original music at festivals across the Midwest\, the two-of-a-kind twin sisters provide a one-of-a-kind-show. \nKelly and Sarah have performed at iconic venues like The Grand Ole Opry Plaza (Nashville\, TN)\, Manchester Music Hall (Lexington\, KY)\, and 3rd and Lindsley (Nashville\, TN). They have even appeared at MLB games to perform the National Anthem. Kelly and Sarah have been performed on bills with artists including The Creekers\, Sawyer Brown\, Phil Vassar\, and Sundy Best. \nKelly and Sarah released the final piece of their 5 song project on June 15\, 2026. Their song “Three Sheets to the Wind” reached #28 on Music Row Charts and received a Josie Music Award for “Social Impact Song on the Year” in 2026. Their newest single\, “Cowboy on the Run” has been marked as “One to Watch” by NSAI. This is a highly selective honor\, as only one out of thousands of submissions is chosen by NSAI song evaluators! This song paints a cinematic picture that you can follow visually with its official music video on YouTube. A strong-willed dame sees right through a smooth-talking cowboy’s games and is not afraid to challenge him.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Big Plate — 10/23 — Tony Hannah / Rosy Nolan
DESCRIPTION:Tony Hannah is a Country Artist for the girls who hold it all together; juggling men who act like boys\, flings that end in ghosting\, late night gigs\, and the grind of long shifts that barely cover the rent. She draws on the everywoman idols of the genre–Loretta Lynn\, Dolly Parton\, Linda Rondstadt–but updates the tropes for twenty-first century malaise. Her characters aren’t mere disgruntled housewives; Hannah croons about women who are “bringing home the bacon\, and frying it too.” \n\n\nWomen have been working overtime\,” says Tony Hannah. “From pulling double shifts to mending heartbreak after heartbreak… it feels neverending. We do it all\, alone.” A preacher’s daughter from East Tennessee\, Hannah is no stranger to hard work. It’s a work ethic that’s criss-crossed her across the country\, doing everything from farm-labor gigs in California\, to high-fashion modeling in New York City\, to every odd job in between. This duality is on full display on her debut record. With years of national touring under her belt\, opening for acts like Margo Price\, Jesse Daniel\, and Summer Dean\, Hannah is ready to do it all on “Love It Or Leave It”\, soon to be released in Spring 2026. \nProduced and recorded in Nashville\, Tennessee with Elijah Ocean at Back Cabin Sound\, the album balances slick 90’s country production (Zach Top\, The Judds) with vintage cool-girl nostalgia (Emmylou Harris\, Rosanne Cash\, Kathy Mattea) and blue collar lament (Bruce Springsteen\, Lucinda Williams). Hannah’s country-glam sensibility is supported by an all-star band; drummer Aaron Goodrich (Colter Wall\, Zach Top)\, fiddler Mary Meyer (Alison Krauss\, Molly Tuttle)\, multi-instrumentalist Jeremy Long\, and mixer Buster Allen (Garth Brooks). \nThe entire record was written by Hannah herself and a few trusted co-writers (Elijah Ocean\, Brennen Leigh\, Stefanie Joyce)\, with one special\, notable exception\, her late Uncle AJ Masters\, who penned songs for Randy Travis and Faith Hill in the 90’s. “My uncle definitely planted the seed for me to move to Nashville\, although I didn’t know it at the time\,” says Hannah. “Singing songs with him around the campfire\, I never thought I’d have the chance to record one of his in Nashville.” She lends her piercing\, soft-spoken vocals to “Old Pair of Shoes\,” a hit song he wrote for Randy Travis in 1992. She’s more than overjoyed to carry on the family tradition of songwriting and musicianship as she releases her first ever full length debut record “Love It Or Leave It”. \n \nLos Angeles country artist Rosy Nolan’s latest album\, Main Attraction\, is steeped in Americana roots\, Western swing\, honky tonk\, and old-time country\, paying homage to the great American records of the 1920s–1940s. The album is drenched in heartache and longing – core themes that have defined Nolan’s songwriting throughout her career. \nDesigned to take the listener on an emotional journey\, Main Attraction kicks off with lively\, toe-tapping tracks perfect for a two-step\, then slowly descends into haunting ballads that’ll shatter your heart. It’s a record that lifts you up\, breaks you down\, and ultimately reminds you that you’re not alone. It’s the perfect album for anyone seeking comfort in trying times.

SUMMARY:Nick Shoulders: Apocalypse\, Never! Tour — Live at the Bijou — 10/24
DESCRIPTION:Get Tickets Here! \nRefugia Blues\, the fifth album from Nick Shoulders\, is a record of big ideas and small\, intimate moments. \nThese nine songs are rooted in the stylings of Southern traditional music. Sparse\, timeless\, and unamplified\, they’re older than the sounds Shoulders saluted on albums like 2023’s All Bad\, with its loud\, whooping anthems for roadhouses and sweaty dancehalls. Here\, Shoulders isn’t shouting over a band. He isn’t bringing a crowd to its feet with dance-ready tempos. Rather\, he’s exploring another side of his craft by stepping up to a ribbon microphone as a solo performer\, delivering each song with acoustic instruments and a voice that’s equal parts country croon\, Appalachian yodel\, and high-lonesome field holler. As he explains it\, Refugia Blues isn’t just a call to action; it’s a call to rest\, too. \n“This is my Nebraska\,” he says\, nodding to Bruce Springsteen’s lo-fi acoustic record from 1982. “Some people listen to Bruce for the E Street Band and the big radio hits\, but I like the intimacy and rawness of Nebraska instead. I’d like to think of Refugia Blues as a little window into the heart\, as opposed to the drumbeat of a revolution.” \nEven so\, Refugia Blues resolutely pushes for change. Shoulders’ interpretation of American roots music has always been more progressive and punky than the trucks-and-beers conservatism that passes for modern-day country\, and he isn’t checking his activism at the door anytime soon. Refugia Blues does dive into personal territory\, from “Bored Fightin'” (a self-effacing look at Shoulders’ reputation as a left-of-center radical) to the heart-on-sleeve love song “Tatum Spring\,” but it balances the micro with the macro\, too. Topics like climate collapse\, radical anthropology\, generative disruption\, and southern identity run throughout the record\, adding weight to Shoulders’ melodies\, balancing his witty humor with topical weight. The purpose\, he says\, is to utilize his music as “a Trojan Horse that can be accepted by people who don’t hear anything to challenge their sense of comfort and superiority. That’s always been the goal — to say what needs to be said\, but to intersperse it with joy\, humor\, and melody.” \nIt’s a balance that Shoulders has struck in the past\, but never so nakedly alone as he does on the opening track\, “Apocalypse Never.” He wrote the a cappella ballad in the front seat of his band’s shuttle bus\, taking a hard look at each passing town\, noting all the “individualized apocalypses” — houseless encampments\, impoverished communities\, barren cornfields — that unfolded on the other side of the windshield. “Our world has been through countless apocalypses\,” he says. “The refusal to give in to the direness of our circumstances\, while still acknowledging it\, is key to surviving this moment in our history.” \nFor Shoulders\, singing isn’t just a passion; it’s practically a birthright. Born to a musical family with deep roots in Arkansas\, Appalachia\, and Louisiana\, he grew up listening to old-world folk music\, black gospel\, and other sounds that existed long before genres were even invented. “My vocal style is rooted as much in growing up in mountainous Arkansas and having to shout across vast distances to greet my neighbors as it is in my family’s very old way of singing\,” he says. “The way I sing is older than capitalism. Being part of this tradition isn’t meant to be regressive; it’s meant to be liberating. There were time before cash registers and factories\, where people sang like this when they sowed their corn\, and I’m trying to embody that.” \nRefugia Blues was recorded in a home studio outside of Fayetteville\, Arkansas. Tracked to analog tape in two inspired days and laced with light touches of guitar\, banjo\, and fiddle\, the album explores the slower\, softer textures of Shoulders’ music without pulling any punches. On his bare-boned cover of Randy Travis’ “Diggin’ Up Bones\,” he slows down the uptempo classic to a warbling waltz. On “Deux Hurry\,” he taps into his inner Roger Miller\, using wordplay to make light of the darkness that lives within all of us. On “Hill Folk\,” he nods sympathetically to the southerners who’ve witnessed their cultural inheritance become commodified and commercialized over the past half-century. And on the brave\, bold “Dixie Be Damned\,” he sings about “manifest destitution” and the sickness of contemporary American consciousness\, packaging everything into a three-and-a-half minute country gem that’s as tuneful as it is topical. \nBy bridging the gap between past and present\, Shoulders speaks pointedly and poetically about today’s problems\, even as he nods to styles that existed long before the 21st century. “When you listen to the origins of country music in the ’20s and ’30s\, you’re hearing the voice of southern rural dissent against coal companies\, repression\, and depression\,” he says. “The old ballad singers of the Ozarks were conduits for current events\, documenting not only their own lives\, but also dispossession and economic strife on a much bigger scale. Being part of that great stream of rural protest music is something I’m trying to tap into. I want to say things that feel timeless\, deep\, and rooted\, but also touch on topics like endless war and a government collapsing into dictatorship. I want to be part of that tradition of dissent.” \nAt once academic and accessible\, Refugia Blues isn’t just a deep dive into southernness\, but also into Shoulders himself. Released during an era of big-budget country-pop smashes\, it stands tall as something else entirely: a raw\, resolute version of American country music\, punctuated with humor and heavy insights\, stacked high with songs that go down easy but linger in the minds of those willing to invest the time.
