SUMMARY:The WDVX Big Plate — 9/4 — Jay Clark
DESCRIPTION:Although Jay Clark went to college for 11.5 years and has a PhD in wildlife ecology\, he somehow ended up striking a balance between careers in music & science.  Jay grew up in Winchester\, Tennessee\, near where the western escarpment of the Cumberland Plateau crosses from Tennessee into Alabama.  His dad was a Cumberland Presbyterian minister for 42 years.  His mom an English teacher.  Church played a huge roll in Jay’s upbringing.  It was in the church where Jay learned to sing & in the mountains where he felt closest to God.  Jay wrote his first song in 1990.  He didn’t know how to play guitar\, so he taught himself to play in order to put music to his first song.  That song was the first of many. \nJay has been a staple in the East Tennessee music scene for more than 20 years.  During his college years\, Jay not only trapped & conducted research on black bears in the Smokies\, but also played in a couple of different bluegrass bands\, most notably a brother-style duo with Keith Garrett (currently of The Boxcars) and later in a bluegrass band\, The Stringbeans\, with Robinella and Cruz Contreras (currently of The Black Lillies).  Since releasing his first record in 2004 (Pen to Paper)\, Jay has supplemented his career as a scientist with performing his songs across the Southeast & southern Appalachia.  Presently\, Jay plays a number of his shows with his band\, Jay Clark & the Tennessee Tree Beavers\, which features Greg Horne on lead guitar & Daniel Kimbro on upright bass.  Jay recently released his fifth recording\, Of Mountains & Heartbreak (2016).  He still uses the other side of his brain as an adjunct professor in the Biology Department at Maryville College.  Jay resides in the foothills of the Smokies on 31.5 acres in Rockford\, TN\, with his wife\, Stacy\, and their pack of rescue hounds.

Our Maker this week will be Susanna Rouse with The Lettering Loft!\n\nBio:The best songs\, the thinking goes\, are the ones written from real-life experiences\, but those experiences sometimes exact a heavy toll.\nJosh Smith\, the singer and songwriter for Handsome and the Humbles\, knows that all too well. “Alt-Country\,” the new album by the Knoxville-based Americana outfit\, is built on a foundation of loss that knocked the gregarious and affable frontman to his knees … but in so doing\, gifted him with a record that smolders like the orange coals of a once mighty conflagration.\n“None of these songs are really about my dad\, but the sadness I experienced from his death\, as well as the loss of my marriage\, is pretty much the foundation of this album\,” Smith says.\nIt’s a profoundly intimate affair\, evolving from the skeletal framework of scribbled lyrics in the dead of night and rudimentary chords on an acoustic guitar. Upon those bones\, Smith and guitarist Josh Hutson began to bring the record to life in Hutson’s garage (affectionately nicknamed “The Ding Don Den”) using an iPhone interface to record everything but drum tracks on three songs.\n“I’d lay down an acoustic track\, he’d do electric\, then I’d do bass and vocals\, and we’d go back and do background vocals\,” Smith says. “They started sounding better than we anticipated\, so we just decided that since it’s so hard to get everyone together\, we’d just release what we have.”\nAlong the way\, they migrated to professional studios and recording spaces\, adding band members (guitarist Marcus Balanky\, former-and-sometimes-fill-in drummer Lauryl Brisson) and friends (drummer Kris “Tugboat” Killingsworth\, organist Matt Coker) to sculpt the tracks into a fully realized new record.\nThe finished creation is both warm and familiar and a startling departure\, made evident by the opening track “Be Around.” Ruminations on friendships during those dark times buoyed his spirits and inspired the shimmering ambiance that owes as much to the Flaming Lips as it does to any alt-country touchstones to which Handsome and the Humbles compare.\nAnd yet those touchstones remain … polished in ways that are a direct result of the musical intimacy shared between friends who first shared a stage together as teenagers. On “Now I Know\,” Hutson plays a guitar-slinging foil every bit as adept as Nels Cline to Smith’s Jeff Tweedy\, stomping through a swirling maelstrom of regret over the end of the latter’s marriage: “When everything means so much\, nothing means anything\,” he sings\, bone-tired weariness hanging on every syllable\, regret tinging every chord.\nThat regret lingers on “Nice Things” – “you’d think by now I’d be better than this” are the words of a man still coming to terms with a profoundly life-changing experience\, and once again Hutson’s fretwork serves as Smith’s North Star through the foggy remnants of remorse.\nHere’s the thing about “Alt-Country\,” though: Smith’s stories might burn like straight whiskey\, but the music is the sweet fire of bliss that follows. Whether it’s Brisson on sticks giving “Fades Away” a “D’yer Mak’er”-style groove or Coker coaxing “Exile”-era Stones juju on a song like “You Walked Away\,” there’s joy to be found in this collection\, if for nothing else than the simple fact that pain fades and the sun always rises.\nLight\, Smith has learned over time\, is always on the horizon\, somewhere in the distance\, guiding a path through the darkness. That’s a theme that Handsome and the Humbles have championed since the band came together around an EP titled “Hallelujah\, Alright\,” the capstone of which\, “Knoxville Lights\,” was a shambling rock ‘n’ roll homage to the cityscape as seen from a weary traveler crossing the mountains. Two full-length records followed — “Have Mercy” and “We’re All the Same\,” along with another EP (“400 Cigarettes”) a couple of years ago.\n“Alt-Country” is a continuation of the band’s journey to places “both frightening and stunning\,” as Smith croons on the new record’s final track\, “Returning to You.” And as that song fades\, he assures us: “When I’m alone\, my heart keeps returning to you.”\nIt seems natural to assume he’s talking about the loved ones he’s lost along the way\, but there are greater forces at work here\, made evident in the beauty carved from the granite face of pain:\nHe’s returning to the light\, and the fans and bandmates and opportunities that music has always provided\, and we are all the better for it.

Life experiences\, growth\, reinvention\, as well as furthering his musical abilities as songwriter and multi-instrumentalist has remained one of the driving forces in DeVita’s work. From Hardcore Punk to Jazz\, Joe presents a wide cast of characters with very singular narratives\, attempting to introduce the listener to ideas from all walks of life. \n \n\n\nBenjamin Lamb a home grown native East Tennessean with an old soul and roots deeper than any holler. Singer\, songwriter keeps to his roots of ol’ Appalachian\, camp fire\, front porch picking\, southern Baptist story telling like you’ve never heard. Stories of LIFE! A life he’s lived with hard times\, good times and everything in between. A “have to listen to” artist guarantees listeners will relate to one or more stories of a life. A definite go to for some hollers from a holler!! While it’s hard to catch him action at the moment (besides TikTok) he’s currently a full time blue collar factory time puncher\, family farm hand\, homesteader\, husband and father. DESCRIPTION:Matt Axton is a gifted singer/songwriter. Granted\, that’s a claim made by many artists that inhabit the world of Americana these days\, but in Matt’s case\, it’s more than a mere boast. The ability to make music is firmly infused in his genes\, courtesy of a family history that implanted that ability in him early on. \nWhile he modestly describes his sound as a “humble slice of Americana\,” it’s clear that it possesses so much more. With a style that encompasses country\, folk\, roots\, rock\, R&B\, and pure pop proficiency\, he defies easy categorization. With a rich reservoir of original tunes — over 300 in fact — and three well received albums (Blue Sky Rain\, Matthew C. Axton and Badmoon)\,  he’s established himself as a prolific and proficient singer\, songwriter and guitarist\, both on his own and at the helm of his various ensembles. \nEven a small sampling of his musical output proves the point. His “Blue Sky Rain” is both stirring and seductive\, an easy amble that belies  its description of the topsy turvy travails that accompany the entanglements of relationships. “Born of Chains” is flush with steadfast determination\, a rugged\, relentless bluesy-rocker that conveys clear conviction and a desire to overcome whatever obstacles are tossed in his way. On the other hand\, “Everything” is an homage to romance\, desire and faithfulness shared with some upbeat bluegrass banter. Here again\, Matt demonstrates his remarkable fluidity and a decidedly affable attitude. \nNotably\, he also keeps good company. Matt has recorded original material with Steve Ferrone (drummer for Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers) and Hal Cragin (bassist for Iggy Pop)\, and shared sessions at the legendary East West Studios in Hollywood where Tom Petty recorded much of his work. The songs include: “Last Search”\, a Southern rock-style anthem; “Born of Chains\,” which shares a  sparse and dark singer/songwriter vibe; the Americana style “What a Day”; the soulful strains of “Soul to Sell” and “The Big South”\, a blues groove reminiscent ZZ Top. \nHe has collaborated on projects such as “Abbey Road Reimaged – A Tribute to the Beatles” where Aaron Badgley of Spill Magazine called Axton’s cover of ‘Octopus’ Garden’ “pure genius.” \nAxton tours nationally playing large festivals and iconic institutions as well as opening up for acts like Midland\, Paul Cauthen\, Jim Lauderdale\, and Nikki Lane. The verve and versatility underscore the fact that Matt is a master of many motifs. \n“Matt’s powerful songwriting and vocals\, along with his natural rapport with the audience\, was the highlight of the 4th of July celebration where we hired him to play for the 3\,500 people at Donner Lake\,” said Ben Martin\, executive director of the Tahoe Truckee School of Music and Tahoe Music Professionals booking service.

But for Carter\, joining the legendary names honored on that stretch of highway just might mean the most. “There’s a certain sound that’s up there that you just don’t hear anywhere else\,” he says. “I think that played a big part in how I sound today.” \nTrue to those Kentucky roots\, Carter continues to pour all he has back into bluegrass. For thirty years\, he has been the fiddle player for the Del McCoury Band—the most awarded group in bluegrass history. He’s won three Grammy awards\, including 2018’s “Best Bluegrass Album” with the Travelin’ McCourys\, of which he is a founding member. And he’s taken home five IBMAs for “Fiddle Player of the Year\,” a staggering number that isn’t quite so crazy once you realize just how many bluegrass greats have turned to Carter for collaboration. \nAs a fiddler\, Carter has been featured on albums by Steve Earle\, Ricky Skaggs\, Dierks Bentley\, Charlie Daniels\, Vince Gill\, Asleep at the Wheel\, and many more\, all in addition to his tireless touring and recording with Del as well as the Travelin’ McCourys. On Carter’s forthcoming solo album\, Lowdown Hoedown\, listeners may recognize instrumental contributions from such legends as Jerry Douglas or Sam Bush alongside vocals from young trailblazers like Sarah Jarosz or Billy Strings. This time\, though\, Carter is singing lead. \n  \nBy their name\, you know where they are from\, and by their sound\, you know what they are about. The Asheville Mountain Boys are on a mission to capture not just the style but the spirit of traditional bluegrass. The band’s undeniable live shows have received stellar reviews and have the bluegrass world buzzing. The four combine forces to form a spot-on union of impeccable musicianship\, incomparable songwriting\, incredible harmony vocals (a fresh twist combining bluegrass with elements of West Coast folk rock) and seasoned showmanship. This is the “high lonesome sound” of American roots music at its finest. \nJorgenson and Pedersen are founders (with Chris Hillman) of the formative country rock group Desert Rose Band. After working as a freelance musician in Southern California\, Jorgenson met Hillman and soon formed the Desert Rose Band. In 2008\, Jorgenson won a Grammy for Best Country Instrumental with Brad Paisley and was nominated for Best Bluegrass Album with Earl Scruggs. \nHerb Pedersen was a member of legendary bluegrass band The Dillards as well as bluegrass super-group Old and In the Way. A sought-after singer and musician\, he has worked with such music legends as Chris Hillman\, Earl Scruggs\, Gram Parsons\, Emmylou Harris\, Tony Rice\, Dan Fogelberg\, Stephen Stills\, Linda Ronstadt\, Kris Kristofferson\, John Prine\, Jackson Browne and John Denver. \nMark Fain toured and recorded as bass player for Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder for 13 years. Her quiet but steady plodding through the many layers of the business of music\, hasn’t ever been rewarded with massive fame and fortune but in time that slow burn has become the treasure in and of itself. \nThe part of McNally’s narrative that is often missed is that not only has she self-managed herself for nearly all of her career but that she has also been a stout warrior-like-artist who often went toe-to-toe with label heads and A&R to defend and fight for her visions. She left the major label world after ten years at Capital/EMI to fend for herself on various smaller labels and self-release paradigms. Perhaps the business of music is finally catching up with her independent spirit. We shall see.

Have some fun with The ORNL Summer Sessions! \n  \nShawn Camp began playing guitar as a small child\, growing up outside Perryville\, Arkansas. Mandolin and fiddle followed\, all before he could drive. He remembers dreaming of melodies\, waking up\, and being able to play them. “I just always loved music. It’s been my everything\, really\,” Camp says. “My dad worked out of state\, so we moved around a lot. Whenever we’d go somewhere\, I’d carry a stack of records and a little record player with my guitar. Music was my only constant––that\, and my mom and dad.” \nA prodigy who never knew how to be anything but\, Camp moved to Nashville at 20\, and found early gigs playing with the Osborne Brothers\, Jerry Reed\, Alan Jackson\, Shelby Lynne\, and Trisha Yearwood. Then\, he really started writing––and singing with sly grace\, smooth but earthy. Camp released his first solo album\, Shawn Camp\, on the Reprise (Warner Bros.) label\, but found his biggest success as a songwriter\, penning hits for Willie Nelson\, Garth Brooks\, Brooks & Dunn\, Josh Turner\, Blake Shelton\, George Strait\, and many others. He became a trusted collaborator of John Prine\, Loretta Lynn\, and of course\, Clark\, with whom he wrote constantly\, and toured occasionally. When Clark won a Grammy in 2014 for his final album\, My Favorite Picture of You\, Camp took home a statue as one of the record’s producers. In 2015\, Camp took home another Grammy\, this time\, as lead vocalist for bluegrass supergroup the Earls of Leicester. \nSongwriters seem to flourish on the fertile Oklahoma plains. Woody Guthrie\, Roger Miller\, Leon Russell\, J.J. Cale and Jimmy Webb. Add Verlon Thompson to that list. \nThirty years as a professional songwriter and traveling troubadour serve as credentials. Sparse\, timeless\, and unamplified\, they’re older than the sounds Shoulders saluted on albums like 2023’s All Bad\, with its loud\, whooping anthems for roadhouses and sweaty dancehalls. Here\, Shoulders isn’t shouting over a band. He isn’t bringing a crowd to its feet with dance-ready tempos. Rather\, he’s exploring another side of his craft by stepping up to a ribbon microphone as a solo performer\, delivering each song with acoustic instruments and a voice that’s equal parts country croon\, Appalachian yodel\, and high-lonesome field holler. As he explains it\, Refugia Blues isn’t just a call to action; it’s a call to rest\, too. \n“This is my Nebraska\,” he says\, nodding to Bruce Springsteen’s lo-fi acoustic record from 1982. “Some people listen to Bruce for the E Street Band and the big radio hits\, but I like the intimacy and rawness of Nebraska instead. I’d like to think of Refugia Blues as a little window into the heart\, as opposed to the drumbeat of a revolution.” \nEven so\, Refugia Blues resolutely pushes for change. Shoulders’ interpretation of American roots music has always been more progressive and punky than the trucks-and-beers conservatism that passes for modern-day country\, and he isn’t checking his activism at the door anytime soon. Refugia Blues does dive into personal territory\, from “Bored Fightin'” (a self-effacing look at Shoulders’ reputation as a left-of-center radical) to the heart-on-sleeve love song “Tatum Spring\,” but it balances the micro with the macro\, too. Topics like climate collapse\, radical anthropology\, generative disruption\, and southern identity run throughout the record\, adding weight to Shoulders’ melodies\, balancing his witty humor with topical weight. The purpose\, he says\, is to utilize his music as “a Trojan Horse that can be accepted by people who don’t hear anything to challenge their sense of comfort and superiority. That’s always been the goal — to say what needs to be said\, but to intersperse it with joy\, humor\, and melody.” \nIt’s a balance that Shoulders has struck in the past\, but never so nakedly alone as he does on the opening track\, “Apocalypse Never.” He wrote the a cappella ballad in the front seat of his band’s shuttle bus\, taking a hard look at each passing town\, noting all the “individualized apocalypses” — houseless encampments\, impoverished communities\, barren cornfields — that unfolded on the other side of the windshield. “Our world has been through countless apocalypses\,” he says. “The refusal to give in to the direness of our circumstances\, while still acknowledging it\, is key to surviving this moment in our history.” \nFor Shoulders\, singing isn’t just a passion; it’s practically a birthright. Born to a musical family with deep roots in Arkansas\, Appalachia\, and Louisiana\, he grew up listening to old-world folk music\, black gospel\, and other sounds that existed long before genres were even invented. “My vocal style is rooted as much in growing up in mountainous Arkansas and having to shout across vast distances to greet my neighbors as it is in my family’s very old way of singing\,” he says. “The way I sing is older than capitalism. Being part of this tradition isn’t meant to be regressive; it’s meant to be liberating. There were time before cash registers and factories\, where people sang like this when they sowed their corn\, and I’m trying to embody that.” \nRefugia Blues was recorded in a home studio outside of Fayetteville\, Arkansas. Tracked to analog tape in two inspired days and laced with light touches of guitar\, banjo\, and fiddle\, the album explores the slower\, softer textures of Shoulders’ music without pulling any punches. On his bare-boned cover of Randy Travis’ “Diggin’ Up Bones\,” he slows down the uptempo classic to a warbling waltz. On “Deux Hurry\,” he taps into his inner Roger Miller\, using wordplay to make light of the darkness that lives within all of us. On “Hill Folk\,” he nods sympathetically to the southerners who’ve witnessed their cultural inheritance become commodified and commercialized over the past half-century. And on the brave\, bold “Dixie Be Damned\,” he sings about “manifest destitution” and the sickness of contemporary American consciousness\, packaging everything into a three-and-a-half minute country gem that’s as tuneful as it is topical. \nBy bridging the gap between past and present\, Shoulders speaks pointedly and poetically about today’s problems\, even as he nods to styles that existed long before the 21st century. “When you listen to the origins of country music in the ’20s and ’30s\, you’re hearing the voice of southern rural dissent against coal companies\, repression\, and depression\,” he says. “The old ballad singers of the Ozarks were conduits for current events\, documenting not only their own lives\, but also dispossession and economic strife on a much bigger scale. Being part of that great stream of rural protest music is something I’m trying to tap into. I want to say things that feel timeless\, deep\, and rooted\, but also touch on topics like endless war and a government collapsing into dictatorship. I want to be part of that tradition of dissent.” \nAt once academic and accessible\, Refugia Blues isn’t just a deep dive into southernness\, but also into Shoulders himself. Released during an era of big-budget country-pop smashes\, it stands tall as something else entirely: a raw\, resolute version of American country music\, punctuated with humor and heavy insights\, stacked high with songs that go down easy but linger in the minds of those willing to invest the time.

Smart and catchy\, it’s the kind of memorable line—like “gotta kick at the darkness ’til it bleeds daylight” from his classic song “Lovers in a Dangerous Time”—the world has become used to hearing from Cockburn. \nAn inspired poet and exceptional guitarist\, the award-winning artist has spent his entire career kicking at the darkness with songs that tackle topics from politics and human rights to the environment and spirituality. And he’s not letting up. While other singer-songwriters his age are slowing down\, Cockburn\, on the eve of his 78 th birthday\, has released a dozen new compositions as powerful as any he’s written. You could even say his songwriting is on a roll as well. \nExquisitely recorded in Nashville with his longtime producer\, Colin Linden\, O Sun O Moon exudes a newfound simplicity and clarity\, as Cockburn focuses on more spiritual than topical concerns this time around\, looking back and taking stock. “I think it’s a product of age to a certain extent\,” he explains\, “and seeing the approaching horizon.” Then\, lightening the tone\, he adds with a laugh: “I think these are exactly the kind of songs that an old guy writes.” \nOld or not\, Cockburn exhibits a palpable urgency on the opening “On a Roll\,” playing a driving resonator guitar with all the vigor of his veteran blues heroes. Similarly “To Keep the World We Know\,” one of the album’s few explicitly topical numbers\, bristles with Cockburn’s buzzing dulcimer as he and Inuk music star Susan Aglukark\, with whom he co-wrote the song\, sing about the growing threat of global warming. \nStill\, most of the songs strike gentler tones\, from the jazz sway of “Push Come to Shove” and the folky drone of “Into the Now” to the string-laden “Us All” and the hymn-like “Colin Went Down to the Water.” The latter\, one of several songs Cockburn wrote while on a month-long holiday with family on the Hawaiian island of Maui\, describes the drowning of a friend. “It’s not about Colin Linden\,” Cockburn is quick to point out\, “but someone I knew from San Francisco who’d \nmoved to Maui. It was tragic and quite surreal because I got a voicemail message from him when I was in Maui\, saying ‘Welcome to paradise\,’ and then found out afterward that he’d died.” \nSpeaking of surreal\, another song written while in Maui\, the whimsical “King of the Bolero\,” is unlike anything else on the album. Over a woozy clarinet and drunken\, New Orleans-style horns\, Cockburn paints a cartoon portrait of an oversized barroom musician “with a double chin all the way round his neck and a pot belly in the back.” Is it a dream or a figment of his imagination? In a gravelly voice\, Cockburn leaves us guessing as he sings “it’s moon high noon—I’m not in my Bed.” \n“The people I was with in Maui were quite perplexed when they heard that song\,” muses Cockburn. “After hearing the other things I’d written there\, they wondered ‘where did that come from?’ It really came from out of the blue. I remembered when I was in high school one of my friends made a crack about an old blues singer who used to come through who he said had a double chin in the back. It was a funny thing to hear at the time and it stayed with me. I didn’t want to make it specifically about a black blues guy\, so I mention Minnesota Fats and Fatty Arbuckle as well as Fats Domino and Fats Waller.” \nAs with so many Cockburn albums\, the musicianship on O Sun O Moon is superb. Along with usual suspects Linden on guitar\, Janice Powers on keyboards and Gary Craig on drums\, the album features bassist Viktor Krauss\, drummer Chris Brown\, accordionist Jeff Taylor\, violinist Jenny Scheinman and multi-instrumentalist Jim Hoke. And Cockburn’s guest vocalists include Shawn Colvin\, Buddy Miller as well as mellifluous singers Allison Russell\, Sarah Jarosz and Ann and Regina McCrary\, daughters of gospel great Rev. Samuel McCrary\, one of the founders of the Fairfield Four. The McCrary sisters shine brightest on the title track\, whose full name is “O Sun By Day O Moon By Night.” They sing the euphoric chorus of the song which relates\, during spoken verses\, a dream Cockburn had in which he makes the journey to heaven. “In the dream\, which was really powerful\,” says Cockburn\, “I see myself silhouetted on a ridge with this jar of blood pouring it on the soil. It wasn’t scary or disturbing at all.” Cockburn adds that he wrote the line “and if that sun and moon don’t shine” in the spirit of songs from the folk ballad “Mockingbird” to the blues number “Bo Diddley.” \nThe album’s jazzy closer\, “When You Arrive\,” finds Cockburn confessing to feeling his age when he sings “You’re limping like a three-legged canine\, backbone creaking like a cheap shoe.” But it’s clearly a song of acceptance\, about eventually slipping one’s mortal coil\, as he’s joined on the chorus by all of his guest vocalists\, singing “bells will ring when you arrive.” \nO Sun O Moon includes just one song without vocals\, “Haiku\,” a four-minute showcase of Cockburn’s fleet-fingered guitar work\, where his previous studio recording\, 2019’s Crowing Ignites\, was a collection of all instrumental numbers. In between those albums\, Cockburn\, the Order of Canada recipient\, 13-time Juno Award winner and Canadian Music Hall of Fame inductee released a 50th anniversary box set\, greatest hits package and rarities collection. \nNever one to rest on his laurels—even when\, as he notes\, “time takes its toll\,” Cockburn keeps finding and conquering new challenges\, never repeating himself in the process. “I just don’t want to ever keep doing the same thing\,” he says. “I’m grateful that I can keep on doing anything at this point\,” he adds. “My body doesn’t hold up and perform the way it once did.” \nThat may be so. But the legendary musician has just made his 38th studio album. And it may stand as one of his best of his long and storied career.

But he is charting out a personal guide for his life\, quieting the noise\, and sitting with his real voice – the one that’s candid\, consistent\, and often inconvenient. \nWe’re Only Human is Carll’s tenth album. Like his best lyrics\, it is also an understated masterpiece\, an honest snapshot of one man’s confrontation and delight with humanity’s biggest and most intimate questions. Where do we find forgiveness for ourselves and grace for others? How do we hold on to peace of mind and stay present? What can we—and should we––trust? And how can we moor ourselves to\, well\, ourselves\, in the midst of confusing\, trying times? We’re Only Human offers audiences the chance to listen to Carll as he listens to himself. \n“I’ve lived outside of myself for so long\,” Carll admits. “Distractions\, fear\, anxiety\, insecurity\, and the complexity of being human in this world have so often pulled me away from being present or at peace.” \n“I feel like there’s been a voice riding shotgun all my life\, pushing me to do better\, but I’ve struggled to listen to it\,” Carll says. “The idea behind this record was to do the personal work I needed to do\, then codify those lessons in song to serve as sort of breadcrumbs to get me back on the trail if\, and inevitably when\, I get lost again.” \nCarll is more than two decades into a celebrated career. Praise from places such as Pitchfork and the New York Times––the latter of which yoked Carll’s ability to tackle tough issues with wry humor to Bob Dylan––punctuate a resume that includes Americana Music Awards and a Grammy nomination. His songs aren’t safe\, but many of Nashville’s stars have recorded them\, including Kenny Chesney\, Lee Ann Womack\, and Brothers Osborne. As a solo recording artist\, Carll has long-since established himself as one of Americana’s most-played––and most loved––voices. His warm but crackling vocals\, wit\, and heart dance through wordplay that’s always clever\, and never too precious. Through it all\, whenever Carll points a finger\, it’s most often at himself. \nAs We’re Only Human collects moments of Carll figuring out how to be with himself\, the songs feel forthright\, hopeful\, and timely. In today’s onslaught of instant gratification\, rage-baiting headlines\, glorified intolerance\, and falling empathy\, the record is a startling outlier: an artist’s raw\, real-life effort to live well—both with himself and others. Carll embraces private epiphanies\, and shares them with the world\, allowing them to unfold for all to see and share. \nOf course\, We’re Only Human is also art. So while appreciating the motivation and compelling themes driving it will underpin the listener’s experience\, Carll’s album also matters because of the sheer brilliance of its execution. These are songs composed by a writer’s writer\, wielding his considerable skill with precision and beauty. \nThe album’s title track unfolds with plaintive piano and a mantle of grace. Carll sings\, with a calming sincerity\, “We’ll do most anything to avoid the pain / Hiding our hearts and casting the blame / 6\,000 tongues\, but we’re all the same / Ain’t no need to carry that shame / ‘Cause we’re only human.” \nHard-won minutes of quiet clarity inspired some of the record’s most beautiful moments. Accented by bright mandolin and soft\, simple percussion\, “Stay Here a While” captures a peaceful reprieve from a racing mind. “I remember sitting on the couch\, looking out the window\, watching the birds do their thing\,” Carll says with a laugh. “I got lost in their lives for a moment\, and it was such a wonderful feeling because my mind is always going in circles\, seeking excitement\, and frankly\, just thinking about myself. I enjoyed the peace I felt in that moment and I thought\, this is lovely and I’d like to stay in this place.” Carll shared that takeaway with MC Taylor\, aka Hiss Golden Messenger\, who not only could relate\, but helped finish the song. \n“High” offers another invitation to stop and breathe. Opening with a solo horn\, flute\, and stripped down piano\, the track is lovely and sincere\, with Carll’s signature humor hovering comfortably nearby. There are also times when Carll’s sharp wit comes roaring to the foreground. “Progress of Man (Bitcoin and Cattle)” sends up society’s disorienting––and conflicting––forces\, while “Good People (Thank Me)” is a masterclass in comedic timing\, stubborn humanism\, and the untapped potential of gratitude. \nA dogged insistence on acceptance\, both of one’s self and others\, courses through the album— as does Carll’s determination to hold himself accountable. “If I’m judging others\, then I’m not having to look at myself\,” Carll says. “I’m flawed as hell\, judgmental\, and critical of myself and those around me. That’s a loop that feeds itself. But I figure If I can look at myself clear-eyed and acknowledge my own shortcomings\, it might help me have some grace and acceptance for myself and others.” \nIt’s that sort of harmonious duality––embracing one’s self and confessing one’s own mistakes––that solidifies the record’s big-hearted honesty. “The creative process was in large part a self-therapy session. I don’t think that would work if I was only looking at everyone else’s issues\,” Carll says. \nA moving series of grounding vignettes\, realizations\, and self-love roll through “What I Will Be\,” as Carll promises to not compromise himself to fit in. A slow-burning\, blues-tinged standout\, “I Got Away with It” is painful and gorgeous. Brimming with hope\, “One Day” balances the work Carll sees as necessary with the certainty that satisfaction\, contentment\, and peace are reachable by trusting in yourself and the universe. \nFeaturing a parade of Carll’s longtime friends\, album closer “May I Never” is a plea to himself. As Ray Wylie Hubbard\, Shovels & Rope\, Darrell Scott\, Nicole Atkins\, and The Band of Heathens’ Gordy Quist and Ed Jurdi each take verses\, listeners are swept up in a resolute promise to keep after good. “It brings up a lot for me when I hear them singing those lines\,” Carll says. Each of those people – whether they know it or not – have played a part in my story\, and it’s gratifying and humbling to me to have them lend their voices to this song.” \nIn the end\, Carll’s latest album is a lovingly and purposefully written collection of reminders. “I hope other people find something in it\, too” Carll says. “Through it all\, I am trying to stay appreciative\, knowing that I did what I set out to do: write something that can help me navigate this journey with a little more grace and peace.”
