SUMMARY:WDVX Summer Nights - 7/22 - Bronwyn / The Naughty Knots
DESCRIPTION:WDVX Summer Nights\nWednesday\, July 22\, 2026 | Doors 6:00 PM | Show 7:00 PM\nYee-Haw Brewing\, Knoxville\, TN\nFREE | All Ages \nWDVX is proud to present another night of free live music on the big stage at Yee-Haw Brewing for the 2026 Summer Nights concert series! \nBronwyn has long been renowned as a prolific instrumentalist\, earning two IBMA Fiddle Player of the Year awards as well as a Grammy for her work with Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway. \nAs a child\, music lessons gradually transitioned into public performances\, with a particular emphasis on Irish music after her family relocated to Charlottesville\, Virginia. And her lifelong musical education continues to shape her work today. A background in dance makes her a captivating and energetic live performer. An on-stage collaboration with fellow Charlottesville native Dave Matthews taught her how a crowd could feed your energy. And attending Berklee during the early years of its American Roots Music program offered inspiration from classmates like Sierra Hull and Alex Hargreaves—as well as an introduction to Tuttle and most of Bronwyn’s Golden Highway bandmates.  “My favorite bluegrass musicians today are the ones who are rooted in traditional music\, but don’t really see any boundaries\,” she says. “It’s as if they draw from a traditional bluegrass vocabulary\, but use it to say what they want to say.” \nNow\, as her own entry in bluegrass history expands from celebrated instrumentalist to bandleader and frontwoman\, Bronwyn isn’t just crafting a career in the image of genre greats like Sam Bush and Jerry Douglas; she’s bringing them along for the ride. Both Bush and Douglas are featured as players on her latest album I Built a World\, and they’re not the only of Bronwyn’s musically-inclined pals and heroes to make an appearance. \nOpening this evening will be The Naughty Knots\, with includes WDVX’s own Sarah Pirkle! \nThanks to our sponsors: Yee-Haw Brewing\, ORNL Federal Credit Union\, and Garza Law. \n

SUMMARY:The WDVX Big Plate — 7/24 — Levi Foster
DESCRIPTION:When Levi Foster flew to Los Angeles carrying a 1966 Martin guitar and a stack of restless songs that didn’t quite fit Nashville’s modern mold\, he wasn’t chasing polish\, he was chasing freedom. The result is Foster’s second full-length album Appalachian Funk Tree (out October 9\, 2026)\, produced by Shooter Jennings at the legendary Snake Mountain (Sunset Sound Studio 3) in Hollywood. \nAt a moment when mainstream country continues to lean sleek and radio-ready\, Foster’s music digs into something stranger and more unpredictable. The 13 tracks on Appalachian Funk Tree blend mountain gospel spirit\, Red Dirt attitude\, new and traditional Country\, and Americana storytelling that feels lived-in rather than manufactured. Jennings\, known for championing artists who exist outside traditional boundaries\, approached the project less as a producer chasing perfection and more as a collaborator helping Foster build a sonic world where humor\, chaos\, and hard-won truths could coexist. \nLevi Foster writes songs that feel like tall tales told at the end of a long night – part humor\, part hard truth\, and always rooted in the storytelling traditions of American music. “Fat Elvis\,” the first song released off the album\, is a rowdy\, cinematic introduction to Foster’s evolved sound. What began as a late-night joke among friends sparked by the line in the song “sweatin’ like fat Elvis on a postcard down in Memphis\, Tennessee” quickly evolved into something larger. Set against the chaos of Mardi Gras in New Orleans\, “Fat Elvis” unfolds like a hazy fever dream of American excess and hard-earned lessons\, blending humor with a darker reflection on fading icons\, bad decisions\, and the strange mythology we build around ourselves.   The track signals a new chapter for an artist determined to push beyond genre lines without abandoning his roots. \nFoster’s songs wander through strange characters\, human flaws\, and the kind of moments that feel too real to be made up. As the Country and Americana landscape continues to evolve\, Appalachian Funk Tree positions Foster among a new wave of artists willing to challenge genre expectations while staying rooted in the storytelling spirit that defines country music at its core.

SUMMARY:AJ Lee & Blue Summit — Live at the Bijou — 7/24
DESCRIPTION:Get Tickets Here! \nAJ Lee & Blue Summit are an award-winning\, energetic\, charming\, and technically jaw-dropping band quickly rising on the national roots music scene. Originally based in Santa Cruz\, California\, the group met as teenagers\, picking and jamming together as kids at local bluegrass festivals until one day\, they decided they would be a band. After almost a decade on the road\, they have established themselves as one of the most exciting and dynamic groups in Bluegrass. \nThe band is AJ Lee on mandolin\, fiddler Jan Purat\, Sullivan Tuttle on guitar\, and Sean Newman on Bass. The band carries that youthful\, festival-parking-lot energy with them still today\, but at the same time there’s a genuine ease and confidence to their music making. Their critically acclaimed third studio album City Of Glass was released on Signature Sounds records in 2024. 2025 saw the release of a series of covers featuring guests such as Lindsay Lou\, Trey Hensley\, Ahn Phung and Kyle Tuttle called Cover to Cover V.1.  \nCover to Cover V1 explores the wide variety of musical interests and influences that have helped AJ Lee & Blue Summit develop their unique sound as a band. “Tear My Stillhouse Down”\, featuring guest vocals from Bluegrass and Americana powerhouse Lindsay Lou\, comes from one of AJ’s favorite singers and songwriters\, Gillian Welch. The band pays tribute to their California roots with a steaming Bluegrass version of New Riders of the Purple Sages “Glendale Train” featuring Molly Tuttle and Golden Highway’s own Kyle Tuttle (no relation!). Sully Tuttle\, Molly’s younger brother\, takes the lead on the early jazz burner “Who Walks In (When I Walk Out)” which features inspiring guest appearances from Grammy Award winning guitarist Trey Hensley and renowned flutist Ahn Phung. AJ takes back the lead on a striking rendition of the country classic “Takes One to Know One”. The EP closes out with former member Scott Gates taking the lead on his country ballad style rendition of The Monkees class and Shrek famous “I’m a Believer”. \nAJ Lee & Blue Summit are an exemplary band so unconcerned with being remembered\, with being enshrined\, that they have gone about playing songs that will surely be held onto and cherished forever.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special — 7/25 — Chris Long / James Leigh and The Rest
DESCRIPTION:Singer-songwriter Chris Long\, music is an adventure that keeps getting better and better. He grew up with a father who was a musician\, and learned to play guitar at age 12. Since then\, the adventure’s just kept going. Chris Long writes and performs music from the Heartland\, Roots Rock & Americana genres.   \nChris played in two bands with his father in the late 90s and early 2000s. They played together in the bands Sloe Ginn and Stonewall Gray. Since then\, he’s moved away from performing with a group to focus on a career as a solo singer-songwriter. He has performed across the US and internationally\, including performances at Nashville’s famed Bluebird Cafe and The Commodore.  Chris has graced the stages of Dollywood’s famed DreamMore Resort\, Jim Oliver’s Smokehouse and the infamous WDVX “Blue Plate Special” along with radio & television appearances.  \nChris’s music blends Americana and rock to create a rough yet classic sound. His focus is on telling stories of everyday life and the world around him through his songs. He’s heavily influenced by Bruce Springsteen\, John Mellencamp\, and Creedence Clearwater Revival. The sounds of classic rock come through in his music. He’s also a history teacher\, something that’s had a strong impact on his songwriting. He says\, “For me\, music has to mean something. I love songs that speak about life and the world we live in. That’s the music that tells our story. That’s the music we carry with us throughout life.” \n \nJames Leigh and The Rest are a rock band whose sound blends the raw energy of 60s rock with the emotional depth of modern songwriting. With heartfelt lyrics that strike a universal chord\, their music is as much about storytelling as it is about the catharsis of raw\, powerful melodies. Formed with a shared love for timeless influences like The Gaslight Anthem\, Bruce Springsteen\, 60s rock classics\, and 90s country\, the band creates songs that feel both nostalgic and fresh—offering a soundtrack for the broken-hearted and the hopeful alike.\nThe band features Jimmy Morris on lead vocals and guitar\, whose gritty\, soulful voice serves as the emotional anchor to their music. Alan Griffin lays down the groove on bass\, while Chris Suggs’ guitar work brings the perfect blend of twang and grit\, channeling everything from classic rock to alt-country. Drummer Paul Lowe provides a steady\, rhythmic backbone\, helping bring the band’s dynamic energy to life.\nTheir latest release\, Lost\, is a collection of tracks that feel like they’ve been carved from the pain of personal experience. With lyrics that speak to love\, loss\, and the search for meaning\, the album shows the band’s evolution while staying true to the raw\, honest sound they’ve built since their formation. Each song resonates with a sense of longing\, as if plucked straight from a broken heart—but it’s that very vulnerability that connects with listeners on a deeper level.\nJames Leigh and the Rest have proven that their music isn’t just about the notes they play\, but the emotions they stir. As they continue to tour and share their stories with the world\, they remain committed to writing songs that speak to the heart\, one beat at a time.

He was also inducted twice into the Songwriters’ Hall of Fame\, as a solo artist and with CSN\, and he is a GRAMMY Award winner. \nTowering above virtually everything that Graham Nash has accomplished in his multi-faceted career stands the litany of songs that he has written and introduced to the soundtrack of the past half-century. His remarkable body of work\, beginning with his contributions to the Hollies opus\, including “On a Carousel” and “Carrie Anne\,” continues all the way to Now (2023)\, his most recent solo album. \nThe original classic union of Crosby\, Stills & Nash (& Young) lasted but twenty months.  Yet their songs are lightning rods embedded in our DNA\, starting with Nash’s “Marrakesh Express\,” and “Lady of the Island\,” from the first Crosby\, Stills & Nash LP (1969)\, and “Teach Your Children” and “Our House” on CSNY’s Déjà Vu (1970). \nNash’s solo career debuted with Songs For Beginners (1971)\, which included “Chicago/We Can Change the World” and “Military Madness” and others. In addition to his string of solo albums\, he has performed and recorded with David Crosby as Crosby/Nash. Their eponymously titled Graham Nash/David Crosby (1972) is bookended by Nash’s “Southbound Train” and “Immigration Man”.

SUMMARY:Jerry Garcia Birthday Bash with Cosmic Charlie — Live at the Bijou — 8/1
DESCRIPTION:Tickets Here! \nCelebrate Jerry Garcia’s birthday with 2 sets of high energy Grateful Dead from Cosmic Charlie! This show will feature all Jerry tunes\, all night – from both Grateful Dead & JGB repertoire! \n“Cosmic Charlie really is a great band – these guys do this music the way it should be done: having the conversation in their own voices.”            -David Gans\, Grateful Dead HourCosmic Charlie was born in the musical Mecca of Athens\, Georgia. From its summer 1999 inception\, the band swiftly cemented its reputation as a band that puts a unique and personal twist on the Grateful Dead catalogue. Cosmic Charlie is a Dead cover band for folks that are ambivalent about Dead cover bands.Rather than mimicking the Dead exactly\, Cosmic Charlie chooses to tap into the Dead’s energy and style as a foundation on which to build. The result is healthy balance of creativity and tradition\, where both the band and its audience are taken to that familiar edge with the sense that\, music is actually being MADE here tonight.Moving and shaking even the most skeptical of Deadheads\, Cosmic Charlie storms into a town and plays with an energy that eludes other bands\, an energy that sometimes eluded the Dead themselves. Those precious moments during Dead jams when the synchronicity is there and all is right with the world –  these are the moments that Cosmic Charlie relishes and feverishly welcomes with open arms. Clearly\, Cosmic Charlie’s audiences are also eager to partake in these moments\, and together with the band\, they have indulged in many memorable evenings. Most nights\, Cosmic Charlie walks onstage without a setlist\, not even knowing what the first song will be. Any Dead tune can rear its head at any moment\, and fan requests are always welcome. “INSPIRATION\, MOVE ME BRIGHTLY” is Cosmic Charlie’s mantra\, allowing the music to truly play the band.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special — 8/3 — Laurelyn Dossett / Sam Mooney
DESCRIPTION:Singer/songwriter Laurelyn Dossett lives and writes in the piedmont of North Carolina\, and her songs tend to reflect the stories of the region\, both traditional and contemporary. One of the most sought-after voices in creative collaborations\, she co-founded Polecat Creek with singing partner Kari Sickenberger in 1997. Laurelyn is a frequent performer at regional music festivals such as Merlefest and has been a guest on the radio show Prairie Home Companion. She has toured with folk legend Alice Gerrard and songwriter Diana Jones\, and premiered composer Kenneth Frazelle’s song cycle\, “Songs in the Rear View Mirror\,” in 2010\, and has toured with the North Carolina Symphony in 2009 and 2011 and 2013. \n \nSam Mooney is a musician from Mississippi\, and he considers himself fortunate to have the privilege of making music for others. \nFor as long as he can remember\, few things have brought him as much joy as music. Whether it’s going to a show\, playing piano\, or jamming to music in the car with friends\, he simply loves it. Naturally\, a life working in the music industry became the dream he decided to chase. \nOver the last several years\, Mooney has spent most of his free time on the road playing shows. During that time\, he has been blessed with some amazing opportunities. He has opened for and shared the stage with some of his favorite bands and musicians\, recorded and released three projects\, and traveled around the country performing. Most importantly\, however\, he has made countless new friends along the journey. \nHis hope is to write music that will speak into people’s lives. Music that will bring joy. Music that will serve as a soundtrack to whatever lies ahead on their journey. His goal is to put on fun and exciting shows that allow audiences to escape into a special musical experience and make great memories. And\, hopefully\, he’ll get the chance to meet them at a show sometime.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special — 8/5 — Lone Cricket
DESCRIPTION:Lone Cricket is the musical project of recording artist David Hall\, blending ambient soundscapes with global rhythms and emotionally resonant songwriting. His debut album\, crafted largely in an off-grid studio in the woods\, weaves atmospheric textures with electronic percussion\, cinematic guitar\, and layered instrumentation. Now leaning more into solo guitar and vocals with ambient textures\, his evolving sound draws from Dark Folk\, Americana\, Cumbia\, and the intricacy of West African and Middle Eastern traditions\, and a raw\, expressive guitar style shaped by modern fingerstyle and early 2000s indie. The result is music that moves between introspection and energy—balancing stillness and movement\, memory and immediacy\, in a deeply immersive sonic journey.

SUMMARY:An Evening With Patty Griffin — Live at the Bijou — 8/5
DESCRIPTION:Get Tickets Here! \nPatty Griffin is among the most consequential singer-songwriters of her generation\, a quintessentially American artist whose wide-ranging canon incisively explores the intimate moments and universal emotions that bind us together. \nOver two decades\, the 2x GRAMMY® Award winner – and 7x nominee – and Americana Music Association Lifetime Achievement award winner\, has crafted a remarkable body of work in progress that prompted the New York Times to hail her for “[writing] cameo-carved songs that create complete emotional portraits of specific people…[her] songs have independent lives that continue in your head when the music ends.” \n2019 saw the acclaimed release of the renowned artist’s GRAMMY® Award-winning 10th studio recording\, PATTY GRIFFIN. One of the most deeply personal recordings of Griffin’s remarkable two-decade career and first-ever eponymous LP\, PATTY GRIFFIN made a top 5 debut on Billboard’s “Independent Albums” chart amidst unprecedented worldwide acclaim\, and later\, a prestigious GRAMMY® Award for “Best Folk Album.” \nGriffin’s new album\, CROWN OF ROSES\, is a deeply personal and introspective work that explores themes of identity\, nature\, family\, and womanhood. Emerging from a creative drought during the pandemic\, Griffin found herself re-evaluating the stories she’d long told herself. The result is an eight-track collection that is both sparse and emotionally rich\, blending folk\, Americana\, and blues. With CROWN OF ROSES\, Griffin offers a record that’s both grounded and transcendent — one that invites listeners to release old narratives\, embrace new truths\, and stay truly alive while they’re here. Having crafted a rich catalog that chronicles love and death\, heartache and joy\, connection and detachment\, Patty Griffin continues to push her art forward\, as always imbuing every effort with compassion and craft\, uncanny perception\, and ever-increasing ingenuity.

SUMMARY:First Friday Live — 8/7 — Miss Tess
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, August 7 / 6:00 – 7:00 PMKnoxville Visitors CenterFREE!\nHosted by Daniel Fluitt\nJoin us for our next First Friday Live presenting Miss Tess! Our Maker will be Kate Zibas with Illustrate Kate\n\nMiss Tess is one of those singular artists who deserve all the superlatives and accolades one could hoist upon a rare talent such as hers. This unassuming chanteuse is\, as they say in the business\, a true “triple threat” – a superb songwriter and adept multi-instrumentalist with an extraordinary voice that can sing the birds from the trees.\nHer music takes root and draws from an era when country music\, contrary to popular belief\, was downright sophisticated\, and filled with instrumentalists who were every bit as hip musically as their jazz counterparts – stretching back to a time when Western swing bands and jazz bands played a lot of the same material – albeit with a different accent\, informed by their physical location. Location has a lot to do with the new Miss Tess album\, but I’ll get to that in a minute. I would like to stress here that Miss Tess is not necessarily a “country” artist per se\, although if she were invited to play the Grand Ole Opry\, she would not be out of place\, and would no doubt be very well received. Country Soul might be a better descriptor if I was forced to label it\, but her music also has elements of rhythm and blues\, jazz\, country blues\, rock n’ roll – but never manufactured to re-create a particular sound or era. I’m tempted to call this new Miss Tess album “easy listening” except she’d probably slap me. But damn\, it really is so easy to listen to: laid back\, soulful\, funky\, and addictive … much like the place it was recorded in and inspired by.\nThe new Miss Tess album is the product of an on-going love affair with the culturally rich region of South Louisiana known as Acadiana\, or more specifically\, the magical little city of Lafayette. If New Orleans is the “Big Easy\,” then Lafayette is certainly the “Little Easier.” It is hard to describe this sleepy little town unless you’ve been here and experienced its infectious atmosphere for yourself. It may not be for everyone\, but if you are of a certain disposition\, it could affect you in ways you might not have imagined – it might even change your life.\nI sometimes think of Lafayette as a cultural vortex with a magnetic pull that attracts like-minded souls. If you are longing for community\, (music or otherwise)\, you’ll likely find it here. Relaxed\, warm and welcoming\, folks here are unafraid to show affection for one another\, and are there for each other when times get tough. Cajun and Creole music\, mostly sung in French\, permeates the air\, and hardwood floors are filled with excellent dancers of all ages and ethnicities. Each successive generation passes the time-honored traditions down to the next\, preserving the cuisine\, music\, and language. Even in times of great strife and uncertainty\, Lafayette somehow always manages to provide a soft landing.\nMiss Tess lives and works in Nashville these days but is a recurrent visitor to Lafayette. She has played our clubs and is a frequent guest at the beloved Blackpot Festival and Cook Off\, held every year on the last weekend of October since its inception in 2006. She has made many lifelong friends and fans in Lafayette since she first started visiting here back in 2010\, and many of them are among the finest musicians South Louisiana has to offer. The same can be said for her uber-talented musical partner\, the ubiquitous Thomas Bryan Eaton – guitar mastermind and producer extraordinaire. Thomas is an exceptional musician and has been a key element in Miss Tess’s touring band for many years. He is a wizard in the studio and a highly sympathetic musical collaborator. Thomas and Tess met onstage in New York City back in 2010\, and they both visited Lafayette that same year\, attending Blackpot for the first time. They’ve been coming back as often as possible ever since.

SUMMARY:Tennessee Shines with The Montvales and Garrett Boys — Live at Bluetick Tavern — 8/19
DESCRIPTION:Tickets Here! \nTennessee Shines returns to Bluetick Tavern and Tap in downtown Maryville on Wednesday\, August 19 at 7:00 PM. This live concert and radio show features The Montvales and Garrett Boys. Doors open at 6:00 PM! All ages are welcome. \nBorn and raised in Knoxville\, TN\, Sally Buice and Molly Rochelson of The Montvales spent much of their formative years busking amidst the Elvis impersonators and musical saw players of the town’s Market Square\, honing their uniquely boisterous harmonies and perfecting the art of people-watching. Some fifteen years later\, the two are still at it-maintaining their study of the robust chaos of the commons as they tour the country playing their descriptive\, textured songs on the self-described “feral outskirts of country music.”  Their lyrics tackle everything from heartbreak to gentrification to abortion rights\, pulling audiences in alongside their well-worn harmonies and nearly telepathic musical connection.   \nIn 2020\, the Montvales recorded their first album Heartbreak Summer Camp in a living room. The stripped-down\, DIY folksongs span their young adulthood\, beginning in their teens and taking them through their mid 20s. Then\, seeking a more polished\, full-band sound\, the duo recorded their next album Born Strangers at Sean Sullivan’s Tractor Shed Studio in Goodlettsville\, TN\, recruiting Nashville stalwart Mike Eli LoPinto (guitarist for Chris Stapleton\, producer of Emily Nenni’s On the Ranch) to produce it.  The record garnered them a dedicated cult following and has been featured by outlets such as Holler\, American Songwriter\, Twangville\, and more.   \nThe Montvales have gone on to share the stage with bands like Willy Tea Taylor and the Fellership\, The Local Honeys\, James McMurtry\, and Mama’s Broke\, and have appeared at festivals such as Healing Appalachia and the Old Quarter Songwriter Festival.  In 2025 they signed with Free Dirt Records to release the single “Loud and Clear”\, with a hint at more new music to come.   \nEvery family has its own unique history\, a timeline fleshed out by memorable characters\, milestone events\, and the stories passed on through the decades that bind it all together. For the Garrett Boys\, a family trio from Overton County in east Tennessee\, their history just happens to lend itself to some excellent Appalachian folk music. \nMade up of brothers Stephen and Russell Garrett\, and Stephen’s son Carter\, the Garrett Boys are rooted\, both musically and physically\, in 500 hilly\, wooded acres that have had a magnetic pull over their family for generations. The men refer to it simply as “The Land\,” and it’s the setting for nearly every one of the 11 songs on It Runs Deep\, the trio’s debut album. \n“About 200 years ago\, some Garrett boys came from North Carolina and settled in that area\,” says Stephen\, who plays acoustic guitar and sings lead in the band. “Some old records say that they acquired land between Mill Creek and Mitchell Creek\, and that’s the property that Russell and I grew up on. Carter will be the ninth generation to live on it.” \nBut while the land is specific to the Garrett Boys\, the album the group wrote about it is universal. Produced by Ray Kennedy (Steve Earle\, Lucinda Williams)\, It Runs Deep contains elements of bluegrass\, folk\, and country\, but refuses to play it safe. It nods to their varied influences\, from Steve Earle and Rodney Crowell to Chris Knight and Hank Williams Jr. \nWith It Runs Deep\, the Garrett Boys memorialize those family stories — for themselves\, for their descendants\, and now for fans of classic American folk music. \n“Our music is about the importance and depth of family and community\,” Stephen says. “It’s a mix of what we have been versus what we can become\, and how we can take the good from all that and build a future.” \nSponsored by Corona and Tennessee Stone!
