SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special - 10/21 - Stone Silo
DESCRIPTION:Mike Silovich\, born and raised in Fargo\, North Dakota and Robyn Aristone Silovich from the small town of Elm\, NJ were pursuing separate careers in Nashville when they found themselves sharing the stage. It wasn’t long until they joined forces to form the duo Stone Silo in 2011. The chemistry between Mike and Robyn didn’t end on stage and their relationship grew into a love for more than music. \nWhile still performing alongside Robyn\, Mike continued as a “guitar player for hire”. During this time he accepted the position as the lead guitarist for Mark Wills\, affording him the opportunity to play at historic places like the Ryman Auditorium and the Grand Ole Opry. In October 2011\, after an Opry performance\, Mike proposed to Robyn in the only place he saw fit..at the Grand Ole Opry! They would marry the following year. \nOver the next few years\, they would continue to write songs and perform hundreds of shows per year in the Nashville area and beyond. \nReady to plant their roots and start a family\, they bought a 12 acre tobacco field on the outskirts of Nashville. Fulfilling their dream of building their own home\, they purchased a 5th wheel camper to live in and began the process. Over the next year\, with Robyn helping when able while carrying the first of their three children\, Mike would build their home. With their homestead taking shape and their family growing\, Mike and Robyn would maintain a presence and continue singing in Nashville. \nIn 2020\, they felt a strong conviction to shift towards writing and performing original music. Getting inspiration from their country lifestyle they began recording and releasing a string of singles\, to later be compiled as a collection of songs entitled “Things I’ve Learned”. Gaining momentum as songwriters\, their latest EP “Where I’m Bound” (June 2024) is their most intimate project to date. Mike recalls\, “I remember something just clicked with us while writing these songs\, and we felt like we were able to write down what we were really wanting to say. And that’s an amazing feeling as a songwriter.” \nThe songs on “Where I’m Bound” reveal their broad range of influences. Robyn fell in love with the music and style of Honky Tonk singers like Hank Williams\, and the storytelling of songwriters like Radney Foster made a huge impact on her as a young musician\, as well. In Robyn’s words\, “My dad would take me to see a local band when I was in grade school. From the first time I saw them\, I felt the magic in the music. As I grew and dug further into more songwriters and artists\, from the light hearted lyrics of Jimmy Buffett to the honky tonk\, rockabilly sounds of BR-549 and the deep musical expressions of Keith Gattis\, I knew I wanted to make people feel the way I felt when I heard the stories in and behind the songs.” In contrast\, Mike cut his teeth on a deep dive into Blues and Soul musicians such as Sam Cooke\, BB King and Al Green. “I loved everything about it.” Mike remembers. “Immediately I connected with the energy and the emotion of the music. To this day\, every time I take a guitar solo or sing a line\, I’m drawing inspiration from people like Bobby Womack\, The Staple Singers\, or Clarence Carter.” Eager to learn all he could about the music he loved\, Mike would spend a number of years in both Minneapolis and Chicago before calling Nashville home. \nThough the two have their own unique influences\, they have openly embraced the other’s tastes in music and adopted them into their sound as a duo. “It’s a really cool feeling when you can listen to a James Brown boogie woogie\, and then play a Lefty Frizzell song and understand that they’re really no different from each other. It’s all just music\, and it all melts together.” Mike explains. \nNavigating the waters of being independent artists as well as husband\, wife and parents\, they welcome the challenges each day brings with the life they’ve chosen. “At the end of the day\, there’s nothing more fulfilling than knowing you and your family are living out God’s plan for your life.” Mike shares. “Not saying it’s always certain or always easy\, but we can’t rightly tell our kids to chase their dreams in this life if we aren’t practicing what we preach. So we choose to lead by example.”

In a recent review\, Billboard stated\, “Ellis has quickly cemented himself as a sterling newcomer in the bluegrass scene\,” a prescient assessment as evidenced by his debut single\, “Grassy Cove\,” going to #1 on the Bluegrass Today charts. The week of March 5\, Ellis had five singles on the Bluegrass Today charts. Ellis’ recent appearances included opening for Marty Stuart and Molly Tuttle and performances at an array of major music festivals including Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Fest.  On November 10\, 2023\, Ellis made his debut on The Grand Ole Opry at the age of 14. \nA devotee of Bill Monroe\, Ellis has been mentored by many iconic musicians\, including Sierra Hull\, Bobby Osborne\, Mike Compton\, and others. SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special - 10/24 - Josh Lovelace / A Tale Of Two
DESCRIPTION:Josh Lovelace is a proud work in progress: whether it’s quitting drinking to be more present for his kids\, quelling panic attacks before stepping on stage\, or just figuring out what he believes after a childhood of being told that there’s only one way to pray. Through all this turmoil\, though\, he’s had his touchstones\, his shelters: loved ones\, friends\, and\, of course\, music. \n“Writing has always been something that feels like a best friend in some ways; I’m able to lean on that any time\,” Lovelace says. “I’ve never felt like I was ready to share where I am. Who I am at this moment feels like the right time to let all that out.” \nAnd let it all out he does on landmark album Shelters\, an 11-song suite of achingly personal tracks that ping-pong with alacrity between self-doubt\, angst\, and a stunning kind of hope. An album close to the heart that’s also deeply\, deeply relatable to anyone who’s ever felt lost\, Lovelace’s solo effort drops on October 25. \n“Growing up as a preacher’s kid\, we were taught that an invisible force in the sky was the ultimate shelter when things get rough. But as I got older\, I started seeing holes in the foundation\,” Lovelace says. “And so the reason why I call the album ‘shelters’ instead of just ‘shelter’ is because there’s not a one stop-shop for salvation. Different people became shelters for me — and also my work. There’s beauty in that.” \nBorn and raised in Knoxville\, Tennessee\, Lovelace — who also plays keys and sings in South Carolina rock band NEEDTOBREATHE — grew up making music. He’s been a musician basically since birth\, fed on a steady diet of rock\, soul\, gospel\, folk\, Elton John\, and Bob Dylan—anyone with a story to tell. Lovelace has been touring in bands since high school ended\, the only place he’s ever really felt at home. “I’ve been on the road most of my life\, playing music and trying to keep the rock & roll dream alive. It’s what I’ve always done\,” he says. \nWorking on the album\, then\, was like therapy. In 2022\, he took a solo trip to Roslyn\, Washington — where one of his comfort shows\, Northern Exposure\, was filmed — to finally put those 11 songs down on tape. “It was kind of a watershed thing for me\,” he says. “I was able to really reckon with some of the things that have happened to me\, whether it’s my fault or not\, and start to deal with those things and not keep them hidden anymore.” \n \n A Tale Of Two: \nCombining the best of Americana and blues melodies with timeless Southern storytelling\, award winning vocalist Stephanie Adlington and guitarist Aaron Lessard draw influence from the likes of Tom Waits and Ray LaMontagne\, along with bedrock artists such as Patsy Cline and Hank Williams Sr. A Tale Of Two has opened for notable artists such as Mary Gauthier\, Grayson Capps\, and Peter Mulvey. Not unlike the artists who inspired them\, the duo’s songs frequently dabble in stories of revenge\, drinking and feature sinners of all stripes and persuasions. \nOozing an infectious stage presence and chemistry that carries over from the music to the back and forth banter between songs\, “A Tale Of Two” offers a different kind of Americana – storytelling by a swampy pair of retro raconteurs spinning blues arias with soul\, intrigue and power.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special - 10/29 - Ashley Virginia / Crawdaddy Jones
DESCRIPTION:From Greensboro\, North Carolina\, Ashley Virginia is an artist who has gained attention for her unique songwriting style of introspective poetry and interesting harmonic structure. Her sound has been described as “raw\, contemporary angst” by Americana Highways.\nLike the spiritual daughter of Stevie Nicks and Paul McCartney\, her style falls somewhere between ’70s Country cool\, West Coast cosmic Americana\, and ‘60s Rock ‘n’ Roll. While attending a masterclass in Greensboro\, 14-Grammy award winning songwriter\, Emmylou Harris\, categorized Ashley Virginia’s writing as “unique and unusual”. In 2021\, she released her debut album\, “and life just goes on living” tackling themes of mental health\, healing\, and social-political commentary.\nAshley’s second album\, “the colors in my dreams” will be released on February 16th. This project was funded in part by the North Carolina Arts Council. Recorded in a historic farmhouse in Glendon\, North Carolina\, by Black Rabbit Audio\, Ashley Virginia was joined by 15 different musical friends and collaborators. Together\, they lived on the property for eight days to immerse themselves in the creative process. Rehearsals for the session were intentionally excluded beforehand. Rather\, Ashley Virginia created and distributed charts and demo recordings\, resulting in the collaborative and improvisational recordings that make up the album. \n \nCrawdaddy Jones joins us today as well! \n \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special - 10/30 - Chloe-Beth / Brian Glover
DESCRIPTION:Brian Glover is a Country/alternative rock singer-songwriter from central Kentucky. \n \nChloe-Beth possesses some kind of innocent wisdom\, the same that invented the necessity for Hallmark cliches like “old soul” and she is talented enough to be burdened or maybe cursed with the weight of another profanity: that of “potential.” What a nasty word. Still\, she’s revelatory now with a whole world in front of her\, and it’s a mistake to underestimate her because of her age; her feistiness and defiance betray a stubbornness well past her years\, and her understanding of the human condition is doggone gorgeous.\nShe laughs a lot -it’s contagious and freeing in conversation- but her songs break your heart if you’re not careful. She perches barefoot balanced on the teeter-totter of strength in her voice and vulnerability in her lyrics. Or maybe vice versa. And whatever she’s seeking\, hopefully\, she finds her way there and then writes a song about it.\nChloe-Beth recorded Grief\, Love\, and Other Gifts with Chris Blevins in 2021. She has subsequently released two singles in 2022: “Be Alright\,” a sweet reflection of the vulnerabilities that come with love and “Goodwill\,” a gritty study of her self-worth. \n  \n

SUMMARY:First Friday Live - 11/1 - Adeem The Artist
DESCRIPTION:Adeem Maria (they/them/theirs) is a seventh-generation Carolinian\, a makeshift poet\, singer-songwriter\, storyteller\, and blue-collar Artist. They began toiling at their instrument in 2002 when their family relocated to Syracuse\, NY and used songwriting as a vehicle to process the ensuing culture shock\, their faith\, and later their journey through apostasy. \nBlending a homegrown affection for Country Music with the emotional ballyhoo of alternative folk in the early aughts\, they have created a unique brand of Americana that pays homage to John Prine and John Darnielle (of The Mountain Goats) in equal parts. \nOn Cast-Iron Pansexual\, they received praise from Rolling Stone & American Songwriter for their work exploring identity across coalescing subcultures. Traveling to Carolina to get their Tarot read while straddling the duality of being a “blue collar boy” who is a “complicated dame\,” Adeem excavates unwonted stories of the forgotten south. \nAfter touring with American Aquarium and opening for acts like Will Hoge\, Emily Wolfe\, & Jaime Wyatt\, they launched the “Redneck Fundraiser\,” to finance their new album. In a matter of a few weeks\, they raised over $15\,000 to work with an all-star cast of musicians on their upcoming record for a release in late 2022.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special - 11/4 - Mac Leaphart / The Alternates
DESCRIPTION:Mac Leaphart struck gold with 2021’s Music City Joke\, a record that found the award-winning songwriter cracking the Top 40 on the Americana charts\, hitting the road with a full band\, and earning a spot on nearly a dozen best-of-the-year lists. He wrote the album in Nashville\, where hundreds of solo gigs and writers’ rounds had already sharpened his wry version of American roots music. Once Music City Joke found a national audience\, though\, Leaphart began spending more time outside of town\, packing venues from Amarillo to St Louis. \n“I was playing long shows with the band\, trying to create the best set possible\,” he remembers. “That’s where this new album came from. It came from me wanting to fill the holes in my setlist. It came from me wanting to write songs that were built for the stage.” \nHe’s talking about Motel Breakfast\, an album that unfolds like the rowdy\, amplified cousin to Music City Joke. Produced by Brad Jones\, it’s a collection of songs that match Leaphart’s salty songwriting with plugged-in performances from a band of Nashville A-listers. Inspired by the greasy cool of the Rolling Stones\, the primordial rock & roll of Chuck Berry\, and the storytelling of Billy Joe Shaver\, Motel Breakfast turns a new page for an artist who’s been running the roads for 15 years. \n“It’s an upbeat honky-tonk rock & roll record that doesn’t skimp on the craft or stories\,” says Leaphart\, a South Carolina native who kickstarted his career playing the state’s Lowcountry bar scene. Not long after his first solo record\, Line\, Rope Etc\, arrived in 2009\, he moved to Nashville. There\, he launched a recurring songwriter’s night called the Southpaw Social Club and strengthened his own writing chops\, too\, penning songs for other artists’ albums as well as his own. \nRecords like Low in the Saddle\, Long in the Tooth and Lightning Bob followed\, along with increased responsibilities as a family man. Leaphart had become a husband as well as a father since his career began\, and he began spending more time at home\, prioritizing family life over music. When he was named a winner of the prestigious Grassy Hill Kerrville New Folk Competition in 2018\, though\, his career received a kickstart. That momentum propelled the creation of Music City Joke\, an album inspired by — and worthy of — personal heroes like John Prine and Guy Clark. \nTwo years after Music City Joke’s release\, Leaphart headed back into the studio with Brad Jones. Joined by Fats Kaplin\, Matt Menefee\, and other musicians\, they tracked songs like “Rock & Roll Hey” (a loose\, lean country-rocker\, caught halfway between Exile on Main St. and a front-porch pickin’ party)\, “Shake a Leg” (whose tale of whirlwind romance is driven forward by Kaplin’s fiddle\, Carey Kotsionis’ harmonies\, and Leaphart’s rasped vocals)\, and “Ain’t No Pistol” (a barn-burning bar-band anthem featuring guitar leads from Kenny Vaughan). Each song was tracked within an hour of Leaphart presenting it to the band\, a move that emphasized first instincts and fiery\, collaborative musicianship. \n“I’m a real big fan of how Jerry Jeff Walker’s albums sound\,” Leaphart explains. “They sound like a bunch of guys rolled out of bed\, hungover\, then stumbled into a studio and pressed record. I’m always going for that laid back vibe. I want it to be real loose and fun.” \nMotel Breakfast is an album for roadhouses\, dive bars\, and half-lit crowds who want to have a good time\, but also want to listen. If the bulk of the album conjures up images of Leaphart and company onstage\, sweating their way through a rough-and-tumble set of American roots music\, then the record’s title track takes place the morning after the gig. It’s the sort of morning that road-worn musicians know all too well\, where the thrills of last night’s show have all faded away\, and all that’s standing between you and another five-hour drive is a free motel breakfast. “Motel Breakfast” finds its narrator asking himself some hard questions\, wondering if all those highway miles have really added up to anything. He ultimately rededicates himself to the long haul. “They got waffles in the lobby shaped just like Texas / Life is good\, let’s go get some breakfast\,” Leaphart sings\, delivering one of the best couplets in his entire catalog before leading the band through one last chorus. \nThere are more miles ahead. More songs to sing. More motel meals to eat. Mac Leaphart has been there before\, and he’s not pumping the brakes anytime soon. As he sings in Motel Breakfast’s title track\, “It’s a long hard road\, but it’s a good long ride.” \n– Andrew Leahey\nContributor to Rolling Stone\, American Songwriter\, & Country Weekly \n \n  \nThe Alternates will also be joining us today for the WDVX Blue Plate Special. \n

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special - 11/9 - Caleb Clauder & Reeb Willms
DESCRIPTION:Dust off your boots and gather around for some true and original modern honky tonk music. An all-star cast of master musicians backs these two soul singers of country music\, Caleb Klauder and Reeb Willms. These two are known to roots music fans across the globe for their soulful harmonies\, driving dance tunes\, classic original songs\, and commitment to the raw truth of rural American music. They live in the San Juan Islands of Washington\, though until recently\, home was Portland\, OR. They are foundational to the exceptional old-time and country music scene in the Pacific NW with the Caleb Klauder Reeb Willms Country Band and their membership in the Foghorn Stringband\, of which Caleb was a founding member. Charismatic performers\, they bring their unique set of talents to the stage with an eye towards good times and an ear towards the deepest songs and tunes. \nCaleb Klauder and Reeb Willms both originally hail from Washington State: Caleb from the coastal islands\, and Reeb from the high desert plateau. The two have come together in music and are hailed as some of the most compelling musicians making country roots music in America today. When these two sing together\, their honest incantations leave us spell-bound and smiling. \nTheir repertoire is made up of original songs and tunes as well as gems from American roots repertoires\, and the music they make is Americana in the truest sense of the word. Music is clearly in their blood. Caleb and Reeb’s originals and interpretations of songs have been covered and recorded by many performers and their musical presence reaches into a diverse and loyal fanbase\, giving creedance to the impact that this duo has on their listeners. Pillars of the Northwest music scene\, they carry the torch of their music around the world\, and can be found touring as a duo\, as well as with the Foghorn Stringband\, and the Caleb Klauder Country Band. Their fans exude admiration for the timeless sound that these two produce\, capturing the essence of American roots music. \nSometimes we get so unnecessarily swept up in who’s rising and falling in music these days that the sheer joy of music is overlooked. One of the great things about Caleb and Reeb is that they are a world apart from all of that nonsense and let you immerse yourself in the melody and story of classic sounding country music until all other cares of life fade away. Country music is the music of working people who use it to pass the time and forget about the ever-present hardships in their lives. After years of touring together\, Reeb and Caleb work intuitively. \nCaleb’s study and understanding of roots music is so dedicated and rich\, that he can hauntingly immerse himself in the same perspective of those old primitive country composers and write as if he was right beside them. Their album Innocent Road includes a clutch of lovingly arranged Klauder originals\, along with well-placed and rare covers. The pair bring the spirit of legendary country duos into their contemporary takes on country music. Trading vocals back and forth\, they complement each other strikingly well in an attractive meld of honky-tonk that brushes shoulders with trad bluegrass. Caleb has penned over 50 songs many of which are standards across America in honky tonk and bluegrass jams and festivals\, both on and off stage. There is a long list of bands and singers who have recorded Caleb’s songs over the years. \nThe blend of true harmonies\, the sharply-written country songs\, and the un-showy authenticity strike a rich vein that makes them seem like they are born and raised in Music City. They quietly pursue a musical vision without much of a care for what’s expected or in vogue at the time. There’s a lot to admire in this singular perseverance and honesty. \n \n

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special - 11/11 - David Singley / Will Kruger
DESCRIPTION:Born and raised in rural central Illinois\, David Singley is a singer- songwriter- guitarist living in Saint Paul\, Minnesota\, whose music is born of the street\, the country\, and the academy. An experienced veteran with decades of backing world-class artists and performers\, he has recently joined the “Great Resignation” and set his sights on his own artistic pursuits. His music evokes the golden era of the singer-songwriter: the late ’60’s and early-to-mid ’70’s; with its chameleonic stylistic twists and turns\, as well as its memorable melodies and insightful\, poetic lyrics. His music expresses a point-of-view that is at once highly personal and triumphantly global. His voice evokes traces of many of his influences: James Taylor\, Gordon Lightfoot\, Jim Croce\, Jackson Browne\, Dan Fogelberg\, and many others. His guitar playing is at once highly focused and passionate\, impressive yet always absolutely appropriate to the song at hand. \nHis 2021 album\, The Long\, Slow Fuse of Night\, as well as his last seven singles\, have all charted on Americana radio and have received substantial notice on YouTube. His next album\, Fools & Mystics\, is set for an April\, 2024 release\, and the first new single from that album\, “Paradise\,” is set to drop on February 27\, 2024. Follow up singles “Cartoon Heart\,” and “Don’t Worry ‘Bout Mama No More\,” are set for Spring and Summer\, 2024 releases. \n \nKruger shares a style that recalls many of his earliest folk music influences\, among them\, Peter\, Paul and Mary\, Simon & Garfunkel\, Gordon Lightfoot\, John Denver and James Taylor in particular. \nHe’s toured nationally\, sharing his “Folk Legend’s Tribute Show” at house concerts\, libraries\, conservation events\, coffee houses\, corporate functions and larger auditoriums in addition to appearances at a number of Nashville venues. \nFour of his songs were featured in the films\, “God Where Are You” and “Grace Of The Father.” In addition\, he played the part of Noel Paul Stookey in the nationally touring Las Vegas tribute group\, “Peter Paul & Mary Alive\,” for several years. \nKruger\, who performs regularly in East Tennessee at The Smoky Mountain Brewery\, The Listening Room Cafe\, Calhoun’s\, and The Abbey\, said he’s been playing music over 50 years. “Music can convey emotion on so many levels\,” he said. “Music does that for me. The songs that I write touch on love\, relationships\, and faith. If I can communicate those things with my audience and touch their hearts\, then all the work that I do is well worth it. I have a saying: ‘Have I ever told you how much I love music?”‘

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special - 11/13 - Tom Hampton / Dallas Moore
DESCRIPTION:Dallas Moore is a multi-award-winning singer-songwriter and entertainer who has earned a reputation as “The Hardest Working Man in Honky Tonk” and a “Modern Day Hardcore Troubadour” by taking his raucous and rowdy live show on the road over 300 dates a year. \nWith a career spanning over 25 years and 17 albums\, Moore has garnered the reverence of multiple generations who consider him to be the torchbearer for the Outlaw Country flame. Having toured with most all of the original architects of the Outlaw Country and Southern Rock movements respectively\, Dallas Moore is the real deal. Turning their influence into inspiration and bridging the gap between the founding fathers of the genre and creating music for a new generation of Honky Tonk Heroes. \nNo God in Juarez\, street date June 2nd\, 2023\, features 10 songs of Moore’s original Honky Tonk Hero Billie Gant. \nOver 20 years in the making\, Moore describes this album as “A Labor of Love” as he has had the concept of doing an entire album of songs written by Gant and telling his story to the world through his songs since the early 2000’s. According to Moore\, Billie Gant was the first artist to become a hero\, champion\, friend and lifelong influence and inspiration to him when he was in the very beginning stages of his career. At the time\, in the late 80’s and early 90’s\, Gant was developing a reputation as the most charismatic entertainer in Country Music touring with the likes of Johnny Paycheck\, Hank Williams Jr\, David Allen Coe and Ernest Tubb\, often stealing the show from his own legendary heroes. \nAt the height of his career Billie Gant was involved in an automobile accident that left him in a coma for an extended period followed by an even longer period of time rehabilitating and literally coming back from the brink of death. “Something happened to Billie during his time away from the music while he was healing from his injuries and he became such a prolific songwriter. I’ve been wanting to make this album and share Billie’s story and songs with the world for many moons now and I’m thankful that the stars and our schedules finally aligned and gave us the chance to bring these songs to life” says Moore. \nNo God in Juarez is filled with cinematic characters such as El Capitan and Benito from the title track and the murderous Hezekiah Burden of “Hezekiah’s Heart” to the classic country poetry of “A House of Cards and “The Ballad of Reuben Dixon.” The album also turns the page on a new chapter in the story of Dallas Moore as “No God in Juarez” is the first offering to showcase the new lineup of The Dallas Moore Band which is somewhat of a super group of veteran musicians including “Saint” Nick Giese (David Allen Coe) on guitar\, Mike Bernal (Dale Watson\, Gary P. Nunn) on drums\, Paul Priest (Jericho Woods\, Bluegrass Veteran) on bass and longtime DMB member Mike Owens on harmonica. World renowned boogie-woogie piano man Ricky Nye (who played in an early version of Billie Gant and The Vigilante’s) rounds out the band in raucous roadhouse fashion on keys. \n“We kept this recording totally in house and close to our hearts from the players to self-producing and even having the album cover Art hand painted by Nick Giese.” adds Moore. The album was recorded and produced by Brian DeBruler at the Sol Records studios in Bright\, Indiana along with Moore and Giese. \nNot for the faint of heart\, No God in Juarez takes the listener on a journey through the highest highs and lowest lows confronting nefarious characters along the way as The Dallas Moore Band paints the pictures penned by Billie Gant. \ndallasmoorebooking@gmail.com \n \n  \nA few songs into the new Tom Hampton album “A Month Of Somedays”\, it’s easy to get the sense that these songs have been simmering on low heat over the course of several soul-searching years. Hampton is certainly no stranger to the studio – on his own behalf or in the service of records by Craig Bickhardt\, Dan May\, Mustangs of the West\, Michael Braunfeld\, Chris Canterbury\, or Cimarron 615 (the band he formed with fellow ex-Poco members in the wake of the 2021 death of their founder\, Rusty Young). Still\, the drought between releases of original material has been a long one. \nHis years as a journeyman multi-instrumentalist and sideman are bookended by his initial foray into music as a singer/songwriter – he released his critically acclaimed debut “Our Mutual Angels” in 1997 while simultaneously heeding the call as a session player based on his demonstrated adeptness on multiple instruments during those recording sessions. After finding himself disillusioned by the demands of driving a solo career\, the transition became an easy way to hide in plain sight – “For me\, it meant that I could still play music in front of people\, I could still make records\, but I was relieved of the pressures of blowing my own horn\,” he remembers. \nOver the course of subsequent years playing sessions in Philadelphia and touring with John Lilley of the Hooters\, Philadelphia legend Robert Hazard\, the band Idlewheel (which featured Craig Bickhardt and Poco bassist Jack Sundrud) and a stint on the road with southern rockers the Marshall Tucker Band\, he made several homemade albums on a recreational basis but his focus on songwriting had taken a backseat to his instrumental craft. After relocating to Nashville and an invitation to join the pioneering country rock band Poco\, he felt ready to settle into his new role in a band he’d loved since his teenage years – until the pandemic sidelined the notion of touring. With Young’s subsequent passing and the formulation of the band that grew out of the final Poco lineup\, Hampton rediscovered his yellow legal pad. \n“I knew I’d be expected to contribute songs to the record\, and that I’d have to sharpen that skill set again and shake off the rust\, but it was as if I opened up a vein\,” he recalled. “I must have written a dozen songs when we started collecting material for the record\, and I haven’t really slowed down since.” \nThat rediscovered voice in these latter day songs owes as much to Jason Isbell and John Moreland as it does to formative influences like Jackson Browne and Stephen Stills – his songs touch on fleeting intimate unspoken moments during late night drives\, searching for renewal and reconnection in relationships\, and the struggles of balancing ones’ dreams with the need to survive. \nOther songs are conversational confrontations of bigotry (“Wrong Side of History”) or character studies of other lives he’s intersected with on his path. “Disappear” is a peek into the story of original Poco drummer George Grantham\, who lived with Hampton and his family for a year while transitioning into assisted living for treatment for dementia. “Gasoline” is the meditation of a truck stop cashier whose days are spent watching everyone else en route to somewhere else while they stand frozen behind the counter\, and “The Ghost Of The Girl With The Smiling Eye”s recounts an imagined conversation between an encountered stranger and Hampton’s longtime friend\, legendary Philadelphia disc jockey Michael Tearson. “That Song You Used To Know” is told through the eyes of a touring musician in a band whose setlist is chiseled in stone by its long-past chart successes. \nIndeed\, when listening to the songs on “A Month Of Somedays”\, it’s hard not to ponder the records Hampton would’ve made if he’d stayed on his initial path – but those thoughts are dismissed in conversation. “I can’t let myself get caught up in hypotheticals – this is happening right when it’s supposed to be happening.” \n“A Month Of Somedays” will be available for purchase as physical product as well as streaming on all DSP’s at the end of July 2024\, with extensive tour dates to follow. Multiple packages will be available\, including a companion physical disk containing alternate takes and live performances from the album. \n \n

SUMMARY:Tennessee Shines - 11/13 - Andrew Marlin Stringband / Rachel Baiman / Robinella
DESCRIPTION:CLICK HERE FOR TICKETS!\nRachel Baiman  Common Nation of Sorrow\, Baiman’s 2023 LP\,  was called one of “The Best Albums of the Year (So Far) by The Boston Globe\, awarded 4 stars from American Songwriter\, and deemed a “Tremendously and remarkable record” by The Amp.  On the heels of an album release year that saw her play more than 130 shows across the globe\, Baiman in making 2024 her “Year of collaboration” with a series of A Side/B Side mini release projects featuring some of her favorite songwriters including Pony Bradshaw\, Caroline Spence\, and Nicholas Jamerson. If Common Nation of Sorrow was a novel\, this year’s releases feel more like short stories\, just long enough to make you want more. \nRaised in Chicago\, Baiman made her way to Nashville at 18 with the dream of being a professional fiddle player and has since released three solo records and an EP\, alongside session and side-person work with Kacey Musgraves\, Kevin Morby\, and Molly Tuttle among many others. As a songwriter\, she has garnered a reputation for her specific brand of political and personal lyricism\, which Vice’s Noisey described as ‘Flipping off Authority one note at a time”. \nIn contrast with her previous work\, (Watchouse’s Andrew Marlin produced her debut album\, Shame)\, Baiman was the sole producer of Common Nation of Sorrow. After recording for twelve days in Nashville with Grammy-Award-winning engineer Sean Sullivan\, Baiman traveled to Portland\, OR\, where she spent two weeks mixing the record with famed engineer and producer Tucker Martine (My Morning Jacket/The Decemberists/First Aid Kit). For her new collaborative singles\, she turned to friend and indie-pop writer and producer Clare Reynolds\, known professionally as Lollies.  “One thing I learned from producing my own record is that I love producing\, as long as it’s not my own parts”\, she laughs.  “I thought it would be great to have another kind of collaboration included in these new songs\, on the production side. \nThe first In Collaboration single release\, “Dominoes”\, with Pony Bradshaw\, was the result of months of musical collaboration. “I’d been playing and singing in Bradshaw’s band some\, and on his upcoming record\, and we’d always talked about writing something together.  So this felt like a natural progression.”  The song hit 100\,000 streams on Spotify in it’s first month\, and Wide Open Country called it “a gut wrenching tale that catalogs the tension between two people acting on their worst impulses\, leading to a domino effect of fallout.” \n“I’ve been looking for a new well of inspiration\, something outside of myself\,” Rachel Baiman told Wide Open Country in early 2024. “Every time that you work with someone you admire\, there’s a lot of growth that happens from being around their creative process and seeing how they approach a song. It brings a new energy and perspective to my own work.” \n \nCLICK HERE FOR TICKETS!\nRobinella’s career began with a sort of luck that rarely comes to most artists within their lifetime. What started out as a simple husband-and-wife duo fresh out of college quickly grew to a full-fledged band that blended Bluegrass\, Country and Jazz. The combination of Robinella’s honey-sweet vocals with violin\, mandolin\, bass\, drums and piano captivated audiences\, thus creating the ever popular Robinella & the CC Stringband. \nThey released their first album\, self-titled Robinella and The CC Stringband\, in 2000\, which quickly followed\, No Saint\, No Prize in 2001. Both were on the independent label Big Gulley Records. With a few simple twists of fate\, what followed was a whirlwind of rapid success – Columbia Records liked what they heard and signed Robinella in 2002. The label took seven songs from the band’s two prior albums and released them as the CD Blanket for My Soul and then released a full album in 2003\, Robinella and the CC Stringband. This led to a national tour including opening for such artists as Bob Dylan\, Willie Nelson\, Earl Scruggs\, Nickel Creek\, Robert Earl Keen\, Kasey Chambers\, Del McCoury and Rodney Crowell as well as an appearance on “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” and a music video on CMT for their hit single\, “Man Over”. She also performed on NPR’s “Mountain Stage\,” appeared on the Grand Ole Opry and performed on PBS’s “SoundStage.” In 2006\, Robinella was nominated for “Emerging Artist of the Year” at the Americana Music Awards and released her fourth album\, “Solace for the Lonely”\, on Dualtone Records in Nashville. \nBut then life\, as it has a tendency to do\, threw a few curveballs her way. She became a mom and a couple of years later\, she and her husband/musical partner split up with a new record almost completed. Exhausted and somewhat disillusioned with the industry and its promises\, it was time to regroup\, redefine and get back to her roots. So she returned to her home\, the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains\, and got back in touch with what she truly wanted – love\, family\, friendship\, music\, art\, truth. \nWith that comes her latest release\, “Fly Away Bird”\, her most mature work. However\, within the melancholy and touches of sadness there is not true despair. For such a voice — that dazzling\, warm\, bright-as-summer-sunshine soprano — to even communicate it would most likely defy certain laws of emotional physics. No\, instead\, this album\, beneath the disappointments\, she is brimming with optimism — with hope. You can feel it\, and even more important than that\, you believe — because she believes\, and because her music is so honest and so genuine and so forthright that you just can’t help but knowing that this is an artist who still finds life to be magical. \nArtist’s Statement\n“The more things change the more they stay the same.” The longer I live the more I see the truth In this statement. And the truth I see is that as the day to day passes\, while the years roll on\, our lives are full of repetition — repetition in choices\, repetition in words\, repetition of body and mind. \nAs an artist\, and a singer and songwriter. I see this repetition in paint\, in color\, and in song rolling off my lips. I’m from East Tennessee this means a lot of things to different people. To me\, it means a big family\, a mild climate\, an accent\, a thank you and your welcome. It means part of an old hymn. “Lord lead me on from day to day I want to walk the holy way though friends forsake me all alone\, I ask the Lord to lead me on…” \nIt means modesty. \nIt means character. \nWhat can I say about my music but that it is intertwined with my life. The songs I have written\, the songs I will write… These words I know because I have either lived them or seen them or felt them over and over\, over and over\, over and over again. I’ve seen many things. Some people would say I was naive. Maybe naive is a choice. I believe in beautiful\, beautiful\, beautiful. Can you see it? \nWant me to try and show you? \nI will. \nWith repetition\, with a country song\, with a smile\, with a jazzy phrase I heard in a movie\, with some fancy chords a man showed how to play. With some truth. With some lies. \n“Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely\, O Lord you hem me in Behind and Before”-Psalm 139 \n \nCLICK HERE FOR TICKETS!\nAndrew Marlin is a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist based out of Chapel Hill\, NC. He’s known for his captivating songwriting\, presented both lyrically with his band Watchhouse\, in roots group Mighty Poplar\, and under his own name. His latest solo record\, Phthalo Blue is out now! \n \nCLICK HERE FOR TICKETS!\nSupport for Tennessee Shines comes from Tennessee Stone & Visit Knoxville.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special - 11/14 - Haunted Like Human
DESCRIPTION:“The chilling-yet-angelic song “Ghost Towns”… resembles the wisdom a grey sparrow might sing you after it lands on a fence from a long flight north. It offers the song as wisdom as the creature catches its breath before moving on again.” – American Songwriter \nOn their new record Tall Tales & Fables (out October 15)\, Nashville duo Haunted Like Human delves deeper into inspired songwriting\, sparse arrangements\, and\, naturally\, the frisson-inducing harmonies that marked their previous two releases. Despite the album’s title\, these songs are honest\, above all else. Real\, tender\, messy honesty. \n“We put a ton of emphasis on storytelling in each of our songs. We tell our own stories\, we tell other people’s stories\, we tell stories that we’ve seen from touring\,” says Cody Clark\, multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter. Limned with nostalgia\, soaked in Southern gothic lore\, the duo meticulously assembles songs to preserve the spirit of the stories they tell. “When we write\, we will beat a couple lines to death for two hours. In the end\, it gets us to something we’re really proud of\,” lead singer and lyricist Dale Chapman says. \nWith a background in poetry and prose\, her granular focus on language is simpatico with Clark’s background in classical guitar. Though he began playing in metal and punk bands\, Clark’s evolution meant studying composition at the Lionel Hampton School of Music at the University of Idaho. There\, he focused on classical guitar. After purchasing a steel-string guitar and switching to an entirely fingerpicked style\, Clark knew he’d found a place in acoustic music\, stripped down so that each note carries its own weight. \nIt was this evolution that inspired Clark to drive from Oregon to Nashville in 2017. Hoping to find collaborators who were serious about music. Within a couple days\, he met Chapman at a coffee shop. She deduced that he was a lost tourist and struck up a conversation\, leading to a cowriting session. Next thing they knew\, Clark had relocated to Nashville and they were making their first album\, Ghost Stories. On the heels of that\, they offered up their Folklore EP\, featuring standout single “Feels Like Fire.” While that EP sought to channel the minimalist\, intimate spirit of their live shows\, Tall Tales & Fables is the next step in their maturation. Polished but not shiny\, the album benefits from Mitch Dane’s production. Together with skilled string players\, the album developed its own life while staying true to Clark and Chapman’s partnership\, one built on literal and metaphorical voices. \n“Every choice on this record was really intentional\,” says Chapman. That shows in the attention to detail\, how every element serves to highlight the harmonies and songwriting that are the spine of this project. Performed live\, these songs take on a transparent and personal quality\, augmented by the duo’s instant camaraderie with the crowd. Haunted Like Human opened for The Talbott Brothers at Nashville’s City Winery in 2019\, and in pre-Covid 2020\, they shared a stage with Ordinary Elephant at the Corpus Christi Songwriters Fest.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Big Plate - 11/15 - Ramona & The Holy Smokes
DESCRIPTION:“Central Virginia has its share of bluegrass and Americana music\, but an old-school\, authentic country movement is gaining momentum\, thanks to Ramona & the Holy Smokes. Fronted by Ramona Martinez with a lineup that includes Kyle Lawton Kilduff (electric guitar)\, Brooks Hefner (pedal steel)\, Jay Ouypron (bass)\, and Porter Bralley (drums)\, the band plays honky-tonk originals in the vibe of Patsy Cline and George Jones. Martinez’s songwriting spans a range of colorful topics\, including a smoking habit\, ex-boyfriends\, and her cat. Piloted by Nashville songwriter Harlan Howard’s “three chords and the truth” ethos\, Ramona & the Holy Smokes have turned country music sneerers into believers (I can attest)”

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special - 11/18 - Nick Taylor / Crimson Calamity w/ Skylet Gunner
DESCRIPTION:It stands to reason that a debut album provides a powerful statement of passion and purpose for the artist it represents. After all\, there’s something to be said about first impressions\, given the fact they seem to linger the longest. \nConsequently\, singer/songwriter Nick Taylor’s debut album\, due for release on June 21 and tellingly-titled Not Alone\, offers an exceptional introduction\, a rich and riveting set of songs and meaningful melodies that ought to easily assert his standing within the revered realms of today’s Americana environs. \nIndeed\, for Nick himself\, it represents a bold step forward\, given the fact that up until now he’s made his mark as a solo performer\, armed with only his singularly expressive vocals and an acoustic guitar. “Having the opportunity to work with such great people on this album — the musicians\, engineers\, producers\, and managers — makes me feel like the songs are finally becoming all they can be\,” he says. “It’s been an amazing experience to work with such skilled and talented professionals and I can’t wait to see where this album leads me. Debut albums are a milestone for any artist\, and I’m thankful for the opportunity to share one myself.” \nProduced by William Gawley\, mixed and engineered by Bryce Roberts\, mastered by Mike Monseur\, and with A&R representation by Michelle Robertson\, the album was recorded at Omnisound Studios in Nashville and features the cream of that city’s session personnel — drummer Wayne Killius\, bassist Dave Francis\, acoustic guitarist Pat McGrath\, \nDavid Flint on electric\, baritone\, and acoustic guitars\, and mandolin\, Chris Nole playing piano and keys\, Deanie Richardson on fiddle\, James Paul Mitchell on pedal steel guitar and dobro\, and Billy Thomas supplying the background vocals. \nThe result is a stunning combination of sounds that veer from the gentle reflection of “Futures Past\,” the evocative tones of “3AM On The Interstate” the easy embrace of “Carry You Home\,” and the heartbreak and happenstance of “Broken Souls\,” through to the sashay and serenade of “Getting Along\,” the heartfelt homage to a special “Kentucky Girl\,” and forward through the driving and determined “Heart on the Run.” \n \nSong-sirens Lauren Harding and Mallory Trunnell were veterans of intricate song-crafting and the bright lights of the stage on their own\, but together\, they discovered a shared talent for firecracker lyrics and glistening harmonies that became irresistible. The ladies penned a tune while participating in a songwriting challenge that sparked the notion to forge a Badass\, Harmony-Laced\, Folk/Rock driven\, Americana Lady Duo. Thus: Crimson Calamity was born. \nWith inspiration from artists like Brandi Carlile\, The Civil Wars and Fleetwood Mac\, Crimson Calamity infused their influences into all of their releases.’ The music Crimson Calamity is devoted to creating embodies both sultry rock and traditional Americana aspects. Fans of both genres will hear these attributes in every song the gals concoct. \nThe fiery twosome\, who also host the music podcast ‘The Liner Notes with Crimson Calamity\,’ released their new EP ‘WildCard’ on 2/11/22. This wistful collection of songs showcases the evolution of the pair’s artistry that is seasoned and re-energized\, while still offering their signature sound.  \n \n

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special - 11/19 - Thomas Hinds / Frank Critelli
DESCRIPTION:Thomas Hinds\, a troubadour from northern Georgia\, has spent most of the last four years playing an impressive mix of original songs that share the struggles of life\, love\, and finding oneself within these melodies all over the southeastern part of the U.S. The covers he chooses fit nicely with his voice and onstage demeanor\, always tinged with a silvery hue and inspiring to never give up\, no matter how the world around us appears. Thomas is currently releasing singles for his upcoming album set to release on June 30th of this year. \nThomas spent most of 2019 on the road criss-crossing the U.S. with his catalog of originals and ever-increasing covers\, which has welcomed him back to venues time and again. His first release\, Ghosts and Lamentations\, was in 2015\, and in late 2017\, he released an EP titled Barbwire Bouquet\, which included two songs recorded with Jono. The EP featured Keep On and a reworked version of Favorite Hello\, originally on Ghosts and Lamentations\, which\, according to Jeffrey Foucault\, “showed a lot of growth in the songwriting.” \nWith Resurrection Road\, Thomas takes a step towards solidifying his writing ability\, with a touch of Ray Lamontagne and Steve Earl in the fabric of the songs stretching out in this collection. After relocating from New Mexico to his current home in northern Georgia\, Thomas has found fertile ground for growing and solidifying his voice among some amazing talented musicians and songwriters. He started 2021 playing regionally throughout the southeastern U.S. and finished the year strong with almost 150 shows and nearly 60\,000 miles driven. \n \nPoet\, philosopher\, raconteur\, busker\, disc jockey\, teacher\, gardener — all these and more describe Frank Critelli\, a tireless advocate and beacon for local music whose voice soars higher and stronger than Castle Craig in his Meriden\, Connecticut\, hometown. \nFrank CritelliFor more than 30 years\, Frank has played in streets and subways\, clubs and coffeehouses\, barrooms and classrooms\, colleges\, festivals\, theaters\, and in his kitchen. Those who have seen him live know that’s when he’s in his element. \nFrank writes songs and often performs live. Many times solo\, and sometimes accompanied by one or more musical co-conspirators. \nCurrently he is one-third of original music trio The Bargain. But whether you see him solo or with a band\, you’ll come away entertained\, energized\, and possibly enlightened. \nWith Rick Allison\, Frank co-hosts The Local Bands Show on WPLR 99.1 FM in New Haven and streaming on CygnusRadio.com. In addition\, he contributes to the scene with performances and interviews\, and by organizing events such as the Olde Church Acoustic Series.
