SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special — 6/23 — Essence and Gold Country / Sam Lock Trio
DESCRIPTION:Father’s Daughter finds Essence Goldman – yes\, that’s her real name – mining her life’s most vulnerable moments and emerging with songs that speak across generations. The result is a collection that radiates both grit and grace: a celebration of hard-won freedom and the road back to one’s true self. \nSixth generation San Francisco-born singer-songwriter-instrumentalist Essence grew up in Haight-Ashbury the daughter of two flower children\, beginning her musical journey when gifted a notebook by her father. She put that to good use\, along with a ubiquitous Walkman\, learning her craft from classic story-telling singer-songwriters like John Prine\, Willie Nelson\, Dolly Parton\, Carole King\, Tom Petty\, Stevie Nicks\, Emmylou Harris and Bob Dylan to current tunesmiths Lucinda Williams and Gillian Welch. \n“I felt the vibration from the generation that came before me\,” said Essence\, which can be heard throughout her latest collection of songs\, Father’s Daughter\, her debut for noted Los Angeles indie label Blue Elan. “I was brought up on Bill Graham and festivals in Golden Gate Park – when art\, movements of social change\, and music defined the culture.” \nRecorded at Allegiant Records\, not far from her Marin County home\, Father’s Daughter is both deeply personal and autobiographical—shaped by the profound influence of the loving\, single father who raised her and instilled in her a deep connection to music\, and by the emotional journey of losing him while also facing the end of a difficult marriage that left her a single mother of two young children. \n“Music has always been very healing for me\,” she reflects. “From my days as a kid going through hard times\, it was my life line\, my saving grace.” \nProducer David Simon Baker – who also worked on her last album\, 2016’s Black Wings – suggested Essence use a live band in the studio for the first time. Dubbed Gold Country\, the group includes her current musical partner Danny Uzilevsky and a stellar cast of players bringing warmth and grit to a sound rooted in classic country and Americana\, rich with pedal steel\, dobro\, mandolin and banjo. \nAlong with the title track\, “Love Like Ours\,” starting and ending with a solitary plucked banjo\, and “Meet Me in the Stars\,” which harks back to the tradition of the Grand Ole Opry\, the Carter Family and the Louvin Brothers\, are songs about the death of her father (“Your spirit is with us/Body mighta broke down and turned to dust/But that doesn’t mean you ain’t with us”). \n“Free” celebrates the liberation that comes after emerging from a destructive relationship\, calling out “the gaslighting\, betrayal\, lies and toxic silence.” It’s an anthem for a fresh start and the courage it takes to reclaim one’s self respect and walk away from a toxic relationship. “The Gamble” is about a choice between two lovers\, “staying where it’s safe and familiar or taking a leap and venturing into the new\, with all kinds of risks and potential rewards.” \nThe rollicking “Good Mom\,” co-written by Roger Rocha (of the 4 Non Blondes)\, is a polarizing paean to living it up and cutting loose as a hard working mama (“I’m a good mom/I wanna get stoned/I wanna get boned/I wanna get high as a kite/Wanna drink whisky tonight”). “Quit You” offers a timeless romantic duet of untimely\, inconvenient\, and undeniable love sung between Essence and Uzilevsky in the style of male/female pairings Johnny Cash and June Carter\, George Jones and Tammy Wynette and Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings. \n“The Heart Doesn’t Lie” is a cri de coeur\, an apt description of how Essence continues to mine her own life in song (“Sometimes you gotta sink to swim/Even losers can still be choosers/Give the wheel another spin”). “You don’t have to let your past define your future\,” she noted. “Or let your worst decisions define you.” \n“All my songs come from life—I write what I know’ through feast and famine\, the highs and lows. Music is my North Star. It’s my prayer and the path I walk\, until my last breath.” \nThe journey to this album took several unexpected detours. After enduring false starts in the music industry and the realities of raising a family solo\, Essence shifted focus and began sharing her vocal and songwriting expertise through private coaching\, working with both artists and business professionals. That path led her to Bernie Dalton\, a surfer and swimming pool cleaner with rock-and-roll dreams. Just months into working together\, Dalton lost his voice\, a symptom of the most aggressive strain of bulbar-onset ALS\, Lou Gehrig’s disease\, which eventually robbed him of his voice and motor skills\, along with his ability to play guitar. \nGiving her a raft of handwritten lyrics and anointing her as “his voice\,” Bernie and Essence formed Bernie and the Believers\, putting melody and music to his words\, collaborating on a song\, “Unusual Boy\,” which they submitted for a songwriting contest sponsored by National Public Radio\, the prize an appearance on the popular Tiny Desk concert series. Along with 4 Non Blondes guitarist Rocha and several other musicians who were working on Father’s Daughter\, Essence went on to record and release an entire Bernie and the Believers album with $30\,000 raised on GoFundMe. Less than a year after that momentous 2018 viral performance on NPR – where an overwhelmed Bernie was beamed in via computer – Dalton passed away at 49. \nWrote NPR’s Bob Boilen (Host of NPR’s All Things Considered and founder of the Tiny Desk series)\,“Bernie’s story moves me to tears more than any other in my 30 years at NPR. It’s also a story with a beautiful\, uplifting message and one that culminated in a Tiny Desk concert that left everyone who witnessed it filled with both utter joy and sheer sadness”. \n“Working with Bernie helped me make sense and find peace with my journey as an artist\,” said Essence\, whose path has included major label deals\, multiple album releases\, and national tours supporting artists like Jason Mraz\, Shawn Colvin\, Tom Petty\, Sarah McLachlan\, Natalie Merchant\, Chrissie Hynde\, Steve Miller\, Pat Benatar\, and Linda Perry. “Until then\, I had felt disheartened by the industry.” \nThat bittersweet chapter ultimately inspired a forthcoming feature film now in development with Paramount and John Legend’s Get Lifted Film Co.\, with Essence serving as producer. In the wake of that experience\, she founded Believe Music Heals\, a nonprofit dedicated to sharing the transformative healing power of music as therapy. \n“This album is about grief\, healing\, resilience and rebirth\,” she says. “It’s about the passing of my father\, the end of my marriage\, and the lessons I’ve learned along the way. I’ve never felt more connected to the music or to myself. And we are just getting started.” \nEssence & Gold Country’s Father’s Daughter is the latest chapter in a story still unfolding—with heart\, humanity\, and songs that refuse to fade. \n \nThe Sam Lock Trio is a new project from Victor Furtado. He is a long time banjo player for the Sam Grisman Project.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special — 6/25 — Rodney Rice / The Starlight Darlins
DESCRIPTION:Rodney Rice knows just how to capture the fleeting glimmers of an emotional moment in life and turn them into songs that evoke our own feelings of despair and hope\, loss and love. Rice delivers his lyrics with a knowing nod and wink and a twinkle of the eye to the difficulties we encounter in our daily lives\, and creates memorable characters in his songs whose foibles remind us of folks we know. As he says\, “Music is a common language that reaches all and brings people from worlds apart together.” Rice cannily matches music with lyrics\, pairing a glimpse of a world turned upside down with a jaunty New Orleans jazz swing melody or an ode to young love with a lively country shuffle. \n \nThe Starlight Darlins are a queer Appalachian folk band featuring Emily Johnson-Erday (she/her) on banjo\, Gray Buchanan (they/them) on fiddle\, Sage Christie (they/he) on guitar\, and Lauren Oxford (she/her) on bodhrán. All four Darlins are award-winning songwriters with their own distinct influences\, but their collective sound is one that blurs the borders of genres while still remaining rooted in traditional music. Known for their trademark four-part harmonies\, powerful original songs\, and intricate arrangements\, the Darlins have left audiences spellbound from coast to coast. \nSkyline\, their first studio EP\, is available everywhere you listen to music.

Raised on collaborative songwriting\, rich vocal harmony\, and the folk revival records of the 60s and beyond\, members Jillian Dolan (guitar)\, Yusuf Miller (mandolin)\, Silas Gross (banjo)\, and Robert Myers (bass) mix genres of folk\, rock\, country\, and bluegrass to create a distinctly original sound that will linger in your ear long after the last chord. As their reach expands throughout the United States\, Barkley Cove’s imaginative songwriting and dedication to originality continues to push the boundaries of new folk music. You can listen to Barkley Cove’s new single\, “Cecilia\,” on all streaming platforms. \n \nD Boone Pittman is a Kentucky songwriter whose music blends mountain roots\, outlaw country\, and heartland rock into something both timeless and personal. With the 2026 release of Rust\, Pittman continues to build a growing catalog of five studio albums and two live records. He toured England in 2025\, expanding his reach to international audiences. His recent accolades include “Song of the Year” (2025) and “Songwriter of the Year” (2024) at the Josie Music Awards\, along with “Best Original Song” at the Appalachian Entertainment Awards. \nA product of Appalachia\, Eastern Kentucky’s own D Boone Pittman was immersed in a melting pot of music as a child. From the mountain sounds of his roots\, the outlaw country his dad favored\, to the classic rock sounds he grew up with\, Pittman’s music marks a convergence of musical forces. His original music is influenced by some of the great storytellers like Steve Earle\, Bruce Springsteen\, and Tom T. Hall. Compared to country greats like Jamey Johnson and Conway Twitty\, Pittman works hard to plow his own path with his music. Additional accolades include “You Can Have Wichita” (with J. T. Redding) earning finalist honors in the SongDoer Competition and a semi‑finalist spot in the U.K. Songwriting Contest. \nOnstage\, David is as much storyteller as troubadour\, weaving humor\, heart\, and hard‑won truth into every set. He performs throughout the Southeast\, the Midwest up to Wisconsin\, and annually on his five‑week Nashville‑to‑NOLA summer tour—yes\, including a stop at The Rising Sun. In Nashville\, his shows have included 12 Keys Saloon\, The Commodore\, Millennium Maxwell House\, Springwater\, Bobby’s Idle Hour\, NashVox Studios\, and more. \nDavid’s media footprint spans radio\, TV\, and podcasts: multiple appearances on Knoxville’s WDVX Blue Plate Special\, The Listening Room\, and The David Bradley Show in Nashville; Music City on the Mountain (HLE Radio); WKLF 95.5 FM; K2K Radio in London; and airplay reaching as far as Australia. He has released seven albums of original music\, with more on the way\, and helms Hey Bear Music Entertainment (BMI). \nWhether he’s trading verses in a Nashville writer’s room\, swapping stories in a New Orleans club\, or bringing an Oak Ridge porch song to life onstage\, David Easterling delivers songs that travel well and are built to linger.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special — 6/30 — Matt A. Foster / Sleepy Eyed John's Band
DESCRIPTION:Knoxville-based banjo and guitar songster\, Matt A. Foster brings audiences Appalachian-tinged renditions of various songs and ballads in between country blues-fused originals. He is an entertainer for both the young and old.\nHis debut album\, “Hills of Mexico”\, is like a porch visit with someone who makes you smile while lamenting the death of his friends. It’s four timeless American songs plaited with seven originals that nod to the tradition of dance tunes with serious subjects. Foster plays a fretless mountain banjo\, harmonica\, and the sole of his boot. It’s live\, simple\, and earnest. \n \nSleepy Eyed John’s Band will be performing as well!

SUMMARY:Josiah and the Bonnevilles: The Redline North American Tour — Live at the Bijou — 7/1
DESCRIPTION:Click here for tickets! \nJosiah Leming has paid his dues. As a teenager from East Tennessee\, his devotion to music led him to hit the road\, where he lived in his car and played for anyone who would listen. That took him all the way to a major record deal when he was only nineteen. When that ended\, he refused to give up and became an indie artist\, relying solely on the music and his undeniable gift for crafting relatable songs that led to a devoted fan base he calls the Bonnevilles. He appreciates them so much that he includes them in his artist name. “They’re the reason I’m able to make music\,” he says. \n2024 saw Josiah and the Bonnevilles reaching new heights\, completing a headlining tour of thirty-three sold-out dates followed by a slew of international stops that proved his global following. He has become known for raw emotion and a profound connection to his audience. This newfound attention has led to much anticipation for his new album — and As Is lives up to the expectations. \n“I knew I had a responsibility to try to become a better writer\, a better artist\,” he says. “One day that feels like a blessing\, and the next it feels pretty intimidating.” Instead of reproducing his popular sound from the self produced “Endurance”\, he decided to expand it. “I think it would have been hard to keep my excitement to go out on the road with another kind of acoustic record.” \nHis tenth studio album finds him going more electric than ever before\, even as he unplugs from the digital world. “I feel like a grizzled old veteran at this point\,” he says\, even though he is only thirty-six. “I’m desiring quiet\, a work space away from the internet…I felt like it was important to pull back this last year and try to understand what’s on my heart.” What he found there resulted in an album focusing on joy\, sorrow\, and working-class issues that feel very of the moment in a time when so many Americans are struggling to make ends meet. \nLeming comes by his empathy for working people honestly. He’s one of nine siblings\, born and raised in Morristown\, Tennessee\, right in the heart of Appalachia. He taught himself piano when he was eight and was writing songs by thirteen. As a child he was intently aware of his community and intensely proud of his people\, something he thinks about even more in these trying times. “I look at my folks in East Tennessee and very few of them seem to be winning in this new world\,” Leming says. “Being a regular person\, working\, trying your best. I think that’s something to be proud of.” \nHis records have always been intensely personal. But on As Is he wanted to step away from being the main character and instead use vignettes to express essential truths he has learned. “I want anyone to be able to put it on and not think about me when they’re listening. I want them to be in the emotion.” Because of this he made a conscious choice to not include himself on the album cover. \nLeming chose ten tracks from ninety-six songs he has written over the last year and a half. As Is features the most co-writes he has ever recorded. “I love writing alone\, but I wanted to bring in some trusted partners on this one\,” he says. The resulting list features some of the most acclaimed songwriters working today. There’s Nashville powerhouse Natalie Hemby\, a two-time Grammy winner who has written for everyone from Lady Gaga to Miranda Lambert; Joel Little\, a Grammy winner who has written with Lorde\, Taylor Swift\, Noah Kahan\, and many others; Scott Harris\, best known for work he’s produced or written for artists such as Shawn Mendes\, Dua Lipa\, and The Chainsmokers; and others. \nTo help him find the sound he hoped to achieve\, Leming brought in Konrad Snyder as a co-producer. Snyder has engineered or produced some of the best work to come out of Nashville in the last decade\, including tracks by Kacey Musgraves\, Stephen Sanchez\, and Noah Kahan. “It was an amazing partnership with Konrad\,” Leming says. “I never had to touch a computer or a piece of gear; he’s a whiz with all that stuff. I’m usually so hands-on with my stuff\, switching between setting up\, tracking and editing but on this record I got to just perform the songs.” \nThe songs on As Is feature Leming’s vivid sense of place\, precise yet poetic lyrics\, and  emotion that is always longingly expressed by his vulnerable vocals. This collection is more up-tempo than most of his work\, which is something Leming and Snyder strived to make happen on about half the songs. “I was thinking a lot about the energy\, of having a couple songs that can amp up people at live shows\,” he says. \nThis power is especially apparent on songs like opening track “Good Boy”\, which boils toward a rousing breakdown\, “Carolina Heart”\, a tune Leming calls “less existential and my attempt at a feel-good song\,“ and “Going Gone”\, a nostalgic track about the passage of time. “Mountain Girl” is a foot-tapping harmonica-led tribute to Appalachian women. There’s the jaunty rock of “Redline”\, and a song called “One Day at a Time” that is sure to resonate with anyone who has ever struggled with addiction\, depression\, or a lack of confidence. Leming’s fans often cite his storytelling abilities as one reason they love his work\, and that takes center stage on the title track\, a spoken-word song. “Where It Starts” is a meditation on how heartache can lead to great art. The first single is the powerful “Hell Without the Flames\,” the album’s darkest track that also showcases some of the best lyrics and vocals of his career. \nThey all make for a collection of songs that take the listener full circle. “I just want people to be able to see themselves in the songs.” \nThat’s what it’s all about for Leming. “The only goal for me is to make something real\, and honest\, and that can get them through the day\,” he says. “I gave everything I have for this album. I laid it all on the table\, which is what I always want to do.” As Is proves to be all of that\, and more\, a milestone for one of our most authentic and resonant artists working today.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Big Plate — 7/3 — Robinella
DESCRIPTION:Robinella’s career began with a sort of luck that rarely comes to most artists within their lifetime.  What started out as a simple husband-and-wife duo fresh out of college quickly grew to a full-fledged band that blended Bluegrass\, Country and Jazz. The combination of Robinella’s honey-sweet vocals with violin\, mandolin\, bass\, drums and piano captivated audiences\, thus creating the ever popular Robinella & the CC Stringband. \nThey released their first album\, self-titled Robinella and The CC Stringband\, in 2000\, which quickly followed\, No Saint\, No Prize in 2001. Both were on the independent label Big Gulley Records. With a few simple twists of fate\, what followed was a whirlwind of rapid success – Columbia Records liked what they heard and signed Robinella in 2002. The label took seven songs from the band’s two prior albums and released them as the CD Blanket for My Soul and then released a full album in 2003\, Robinella and the CC Stringband. This led to a national tour including opening for such artists as Bob Dylan\, Willie Nelson\, Earl Scruggs\, Nickel Creek\, Robert Earl Keen\, Kasey Chambers\, Del McCoury and Rodney Crowell as well as an appearance on “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” and a music video on CMT for their hit single\, “Man Over”.  She also performed on NPR’s “Mountain Stage\,” appeared on the Grand Ole Opry and performed on PBS’s “SoundStage.” In 2006\, Robinella was nominated for “Emerging Artist of the Year” at the Americana Music Awards and released her fourth album\, “Solace for the Lonely”\, on Dualtone Records in Nashville. \nBut then life\, as it has a tendency to do\, threw a few curveballs her way. She became a mom and a couple of years later\, she and her husband/musical partner split up with a new record almost completed. Exhausted and somewhat disillusioned with the industry and its promises\, it was time to regroup\, redefine and get back to her roots. So she returned to her home\, the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains\, and got back in touch with what she truly wanted – love\, family\, friendship\, music\, art\, truth. \nWith that comes her latest release\, “Fly Away Bird”\, her most mature work. However\, within the melancholy and touches of sadness there is not true despair. For such a voice — that dazzling\, warm\, bright-as-summer-sunshine soprano — to even communicate it would most likely defy certain laws of emotional physics. No\, instead\, this album\, beneath the disappointments\, she is brimming with optimism — with hope. You can feel it\, and even more important than that\, you believe — because she believes\, and because her music is so honest and so genuine and so forthright that you just can’t help but knowing that this is an artist who still finds life to be magical.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special — 7/9 — Shelby Kemp / Andy Thomas
DESCRIPTION:Shelby Kemp: Singer. Guitarist. Mississippian. \n \nThere’s a heaviness when you listen to Andy Thomas’ latest album\, Highway Junkie. Not only from the swamp rock meets honkytonk melodies\, but also the underlying tone and hard truths of this whirlwind journey of a singer-songwriter pushing into the next phase of his promising career. \n“It’s crazy when you set everything aside and put your mind to something\,” Thomas says. “I’m a hard worker\, and this album is a product of that.” \nHailing from Richmond\, Virginia\, Thomas has worked his way up the ranks as an electrifying guitarist up and down the East Coast\, whether it’s fronting his own wild-n-out project The Trongone Band or being the six-string rocket fuel for the melodic muscle car that is acclaimed Americana act Yarn. \n“I’ve known for a long time that I was wired for this life\,” Thomas says of being a musician and performer. “[The road and the stage] feels like home for me. I love playing\, traveling\, and getting the inspiration to write — it’s where I feel most at peace.” \nProduced by fellow Richmond native and longtime friend Dave Schools\, the legendary bassist for Widespread Panic\, and captured at the renowned Spacebomb Studios\, Highway Junkie connects the dots of Thomas’ troubled past and hard-fought strength of self in the present. \nThe 12-LP is the culmination of years of trials and tribulations\, of triumphs and the continued resolve to harness one’s potential. But\, more so\, in the game of life for Thomas\, whose sobriety in recent years has become a deep source of stability and continued motivation — this unrelenting quest to seek out long-held dreams once thought to be too far beyond the horizon of one’s intent. \n“I’m still navigating [sobriety] every day\, but once I got into the thick of it\, after a few months\, I was able to find new things to replace ‘all that\,’” Thomas says candidly and happily. “I was able to refine my love for music\, and why I did it. I’ve got a story. I know I have a purpose on this earth\, and I need that to translate into my music — if I can beat this\, I can do anything.” \nWith Highway Junkie soon to released\, Thomas is already headlong into planning out an upcoming tour in support of the record. The wheels are turning — either along the endless pavement of the open road or within the restless mind of Thomas himself — amid this unfolding landscape of creativity and compassion he’s living and thriving in\, constantly fueled by his own unrelenting drive to see just what lies ahead for his music\, and for his life. \n“You just need to count the wins and be grateful\,” Thomas says. “And this album is a token of gratitude — this is why I’m doing everything I’m doing.”

SUMMARY:The WDVX Big Plate — 7/10 — Anders Thomsen Trio
DESCRIPTION:Anders Thomsen has deep roots. This midwestern boy grew up on the music that makes America. The Twang of the Opry on a Saturday night\, the Rock n Roll on the stereos in the Chevys and the Fords and the Blues and Soul spilling out of the nightclubs he snuck into. He heard all that and made it his own. \nHe picked up the heartbreak and the joy of the blues\, and matched it with the lonesome\, lovelorn hillbilly waltz and powered it all with those rock and roll V-8s. \nHe got an early start\, playing in bars and nightclubs before he was old enough to drive\, sometimes even with a note from his mother.  He sang\, played guitar\, played bass and even played the washtub. Anything to get him on stage to learn the craft.

Together this creates a sound that is both fresh and familiar to fans of roots music. \nTyler’s latest album\, “Thickets & Brambles” is an homage to the rich heritage of North Georgia. Consisting of 10 tracks\, “Thickets” delves into the heart of the region’s musical legacy. Through introspective lyrics and narrative storytelling\, Tyler invites listeners on a personal journey of life in the foothills. \nSonically\, the album is a tapestry of Bluegrass\, Appalachian Folk music\, and Folk-Country\, creating a sound that echoes the landscapes of North Georgia. SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special — 7/13 — Branden Martin
DESCRIPTION:Authentic Country Music. Raw\, Organic Sound \nBranden Martin is a singer with a big\, soulful voice and refreshingly retro sound. His music draws rave reviews and earns him fans in the fashion that only comes from raw talent and hard work. Branden got a good start in the music industry on NBC’s The Voice season 12 premier. While building his chops performing in local bars and music venues\, and opening for artists such as Jason Michael Carroll\, RaeLynn\, Mark Chesnutt\, Confederate Railroad\, David Allan Coe\, and The Steel Woods. \nBranden Martin is a seasoned veteran of country music. Writing real songs about real life\, the Bath County\, Kentucky native is a self-taught guitarist who never considered compromising his roots to find success. Opportunity opened it’s doors in 2014 when he was convinced to compete in the “Hoedown in the Holler”\, a well attended annual event\, where he competed with many musicians with much more experience and won. \nIn between festivals\, opening for major label artists and playing Honkytonks\, Branden has recently released his hit single “Drink To Remember” along with a cinematic video to bring it all to life\, now available for purchase and download. \nSong writing\, singing and playing the guitar have always come naturally to Branden. The more he gravitated towards creating music\, the more those around him took notice to his raw\, organic sound. Coming to the realization that stifling his calling wasn’t an option\, Branden has focused on organizing his song making to share\, and his journey is well underway.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special — 7/14 — Tom Hampton / Trae Sheehan
DESCRIPTION:A few songs into the new Tom Hampton album “A Month Of Somedays”\, it’s easy to get the sense that these songs have been simmering on low heat over the course of several soul-searching years. Hampton is certainly no stranger to the studio – on his own behalf or in the service of records by Craig Bickhardt\, Dan May\, Mustangs of the West\, Michael Braunfeld\, Chris Canterbury\, or Cimarron 615 (the band he formed with fellow ex-Poco members in the wake of the 2021 death of their founder\, Rusty Young). Still\, the drought between releases of original material has been a long one. \nHis years as a journeyman multi-instrumentalist and sideman are bookended by his initial foray into music as a singer/songwriter – he released his critically acclaimed debut “Our Mutual Angels” in 1997 while simultaneously heeding the call as a session player based on his demonstrated adeptness on multiple instruments during those recording sessions. After finding himself disillusioned by the demands of driving a solo career\, the transition became an easy way to hide in plain sight – “For me\, it meant that I could still play music in front of people\, I could still make records\, but I was relieved of the pressures of blowing my own horn\,” he remembers. \nOver the course of subsequent years playing sessions in Philadelphia and touring with John Lilley of the Hooters\, Philadelphia legend Robert Hazard\, the band Idlewheel (which featured Craig Bickhardt and Poco bassist Jack Sundrud) and a stint on the road with southern rockers the Marshall Tucker Band\, he made several homemade albums on a recreational basis but his focus on songwriting had taken a backseat to his instrumental craft. After relocating to Nashville and an invitation to join the pioneering country rock band Poco\, he felt ready to settle into his new role in a band he’d loved since his teenage years – until the pandemic sidelined the notion of touring. With Young’s subsequent passing and the formulation of the band that grew out of the final Poco lineup\, Hampton rediscovered his yellow legal pad. \n“I knew I’d be expected to contribute songs to the record\, and that I’d have to sharpen that skill set again and shake off the rust\, but it was as if I opened up a vein\,” he recalled. “I must have written a dozen songs when we started collecting material for the record\, and I haven’t really slowed down since.” \nThat rediscovered voice in these latter day songs owes as much to Jason Isbell and John Moreland as it does to formative influences like Jackson Browne and Stephen Stills – his songs touch on fleeting intimate unspoken moments during late night drives\, searching for renewal and reconnection in relationships\, and the struggles of balancing ones’ dreams with the need to survive. \nOther songs are conversational confrontations of bigotry (“Wrong Side of History”) or character studies of other lives he’s intersected with on his path. “Disappear” is a peek into the story of original Poco drummer George Grantham\, who lived with Hampton and his family for a year while transitioning into assisted living for treatment for dementia. “Gasoline” is the meditation of a truck stop cashier whose days are spent watching everyone else en route to somewhere else while they stand frozen behind the counter\, and “The Ghost Of The Girl With The Smiling Eye”s recounts an imagined conversation between an encountered stranger and Hampton’s longtime friend\, legendary Philadelphia disc jockey Michael Tearson. “That Song You Used To Know” is told through the eyes of a touring musician in a band whose setlist is chiseled in stone by its long-past chart successes. \nIndeed\, when listening to the songs on “A Month Of Somedays”\, it’s hard not to ponder the records Hampton would’ve made if he’d stayed on his initial path – but those thoughts are dismissed in conversation. “I can’t let myself get caught up in hypotheticals – this is happening right when it’s supposed to be happening.” \n \nIn yonder realm of olde\, where the Appalachian mountains stand tall and proud\, there lived a troubadour of nomadic descent named Trae Sheehan.\nBorn into the rustic life of an Alpaca farm\, Trae was raised in the beauty of the Appalachian valley\, but his heart yearned for a life beyond the rolling hills. \nFrom a tender age\, he discovered his love for the melodies that danced upon the winds\, whispering secrets of the world around him. He would spend hours beneath the starry canopy\, strumming his guitar and composing songs that told tales of love\, loss\, and the wonders of life. His voice\, smooth as the air\, carry his ballads far and wide. \nIn 2019\, Trae Sheehan’s album Arizona soared to the Top 10 on the Roots Radio Charts\, casting his warming melodies far and wide. With lyrics as vast as the woodland landscape\, the album echoed through valleys and towns\, drawing listeners to the troubadour’s stage. His songs\, imbued with the timeless spirit of the road\, spoke to their hearts\, soothing their worries and kindling the fires of hope. \nHis 2020 follow-up record\, Postcards from the Country\, earned praise from the likes of American Songwriter Magazine\, PopMatters\, and The Bluegrass Situation\, solidifying Trae’s place in the musical world. But it was 2021’s Hello From the End of the World that truly marked his ascent. Featuring the fan-favorite “Sleeveless Hearts\,” the album charted in the Top 100 on the Americana Radio Charts. \nThrough bustling cities and quaint hamlets\, Trae has crafted his talent. Drawing townsfolk from far and near to witness his enchanting performances\, his heart forever entwined with the thrill of touring\, for it is on the road that he has discovered the true essence of his being. From the grandest stages to the humblest street corners\, he performs and sings with a passion unmatched. His troubadour’s soul finding solace in the applause of a jubilant crowd and in the quiet moments of reflection beneath a starlit sky. \n

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special — 7/15 — Will Wesley / Florian Fox
DESCRIPTION:Will Wesley is a Country Rock and Americana artist. A storyteller whose sound blends a soulful edge with country rock energy into heartfelt storytelling. Born in Baker\, Louisiana\, Wesley was raised with a rebellious spirit and a love for music inspired by his father’s guitar. By age 15\, he was sneaking into bars to perform with a beat-up six-string and a fire that would soon define his music career. \nHe paved his path in the Baton Rouge blues scene\, performing and touring alongside with legendary figures. He served as Grady Champion’s Music Director for five years. His talent earned him two International Blues Challenge regional victories and a reputation as one of Louisiana’s fiercest young guitarists. \nBut Wesley’s journey took a turn when life’s hardships — including personal battles and deep loss — pushed him toward a new musical path. Drawing inspiration from artists like Hank Williams\, Marty Stuart\, Garth Brooks\, Jason Aldean\, and Eric Church\, he began merging his blues background with the modern energy of country rock and americana. \nIn 2021\, Wesley released his breakthrough album\, “Both Sides Of The Tracks.” The record featured 17 original songs\, including “A New Kind of Blues” (feat. Kern Pratt)\, “Leah” (feat. Michael Cleveland)\, and “Attitude”\, which reached #1 on the Euro Academy of Country Music Charts in Milan\, Italy. The project marked his official crossover from blues prodigy to full-fledged country-rock and americana artist. \nTragedy struck in January 2021\, when Wesley lost his brother Daniel Dale to a drug overdose — a loss that became the emotional core of his 2024 single “12 O’Clock in Texas\,” his most personal song to date. The single’s heartfelt storytelling and raw emotion struck a deep chord with fans around the world. \nDespite the road miles as a devoted Worldwide Touring Troubadour\, Wesley returns home to Louisiana in-between tours for hometown shows\, staying true to his roots and fans. Known for his humility and heart\, he continues to give back by performing at Veterans’ events and outreach programs — bringing the healing power of music to those who need it most. \n \nFlorian Fox is the “Swiss guy of the hour”. With his neo-traditional country style\, Florian Fox (33) has played his way onto some of the most renowned festival and club stages and into the heart of the US music metropolis of Nashville in less than four years. His new country-pop EP “True Love”\, released on February 14\, 2025\, accompanies him on his “True Love Tour” alongside U.S. singer Drake Milligan and other renowned artists. On May 24\, 2025\, he was given the most important award in the Swiss show industry\, the Prix Walo\, in the category Country\, live on Swiss national television. \nIn the middle of the pandemic\, Florian ventured to the music metropolis of Nashville\, where he recorded his first solo album “Made in U.S.A” with U.S. star Chuck Mead (BR5-49\, Musicians’ Hall of Fame) and shortly afterwards recorded an EP with original members of Johnny Cash’s band. Since then\, his career has taken a steep rise: In 2024\, he released his first live album on Swiss national television\, became a voting member of the US Country Music Association (CMA)\, nominee of the foremost Swiss culture award “Prix Walo” and won a Texas Sounds Int. Country Music Award for “Entertainer of the Year” as well as a certificate of recognition from U.S. Congress. In October\, after an extensive tour through the States\, he performed at the legendary CMA Theater of the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville. Florian now regularly performs on the main stages of major country music festivals and high-class venues. He has developed a stunning presence on the air and in the media. \nOn May 24\, 2025\, Florian was given the most important award in the Swiss show industry at the Prix Walo gala in Zurich. He impressed the jury in the Country category and received the Prix Walo 2025 for his outstanding musical achievements on both sides of the Atlantic. \nOn his new EP “True Love” released on February 14\, 2025\, Florian skillfully combines a powerful Nashville sound with delicate roots music elements such as banjo and dobro. The songs tell the original story of the young\, but already tested\, matured and well-traveled singer: In the single “Home” (pre-released on January 24)\, Florian has found his center both musically and personally and conveys the message with a stomping\, very catchy tune. “Country Man” is a loving ode to his ageing father\, who awakened in him his love of country music. In the funky “Toxic Fascination”\, Florian remembers a fiery lover who almost threw him off his life’s track. With the ballad “True Love”\, which he co-wrote with U.S. artist Drake Milligan\, he makes even the most sedate of souls pine with him for one true love with a voice reminiscent of Roy Orbison. “Daphne and Till” is a modern country fairytale that proves that great love can be found even in the age of dating apps. With the honky-tonk smasher “Friday Night”\, Florian rounds off the EP in the spirit of an exuberant night in the music capital of Nashville\, Tennessee.

SUMMARY:WDVX Summer Nights - 7/22 - Bronwyn Keith-Hynes / The Naughty Knots
DESCRIPTION:WDVX Summer Nights\nWednesday\, July 22\, 2026 | Doors 6:00 PM | Show 7:00 PM\nYee-Haw Brewing\, Knoxville\, TN\nFREE | All Ages \nWDVX is proud to present another night of free live music on the big stage at Yee-Haw Brewing for the 2026 Summer Nights concert series! \nBronwyn Keith-Hynes has long been renowned as a prolific instrumentalist\, earning two IBMA Fiddle Player of the Year awards as well as a Grammy for her work with Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway. \nAs a child\, music lessons gradually transitioned into public performances\, with a particular emphasis on Irish music after her family relocated to Charlottesville\, Virginia. And her lifelong musical education continues to shape her work today. A background in dance makes her a captivating and energetic live performer. An on-stage collaboration with fellow Charlottesville native Dave Matthews taught her how a crowd could feed your energy. And attending Berklee during the early years of its American Roots Music program offered inspiration from classmates like Sierra Hull and Alex Hargreaves—as well as an introduction to Tuttle and most of Bronwyn’s Golden Highway bandmates.  “My favorite bluegrass musicians today are the ones who are rooted in traditional music\, but don’t really see any boundaries\,” she says. “It’s as if they draw from a traditional bluegrass vocabulary\, but use it to say what they want to say.” \nNow\, as her own entry in bluegrass history expands from celebrated instrumentalist to bandleader and frontwoman\, Bronwyn isn’t just crafting a career in the image of genre greats like Sam Bush and Jerry Douglas; she’s bringing them along for the ride. Both Bush and Douglas are featured as players on her latest album I Built a World\, and they’re not the only of Bronwyn’s musically-inclined pals and heroes to make an appearance. \nOpening this evening will be The Naughty Knots\, with includes WDVX’s own Sarah Pirkle! \nThanks to our sponsors: Yee-Haw Brewing\, ORNL Federal Credit Union\, and Garza Law. \n

SUMMARY:Graham Nash — Live at the Bijou — 7/29
DESCRIPTION:Get Tickets Here! \nNash is a two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee\, with Crosby\, Stills\, and Nash\, and with the Hollies. He was also inducted twice into the Songwriters’ Hall of Fame\, as a solo artist and with CSN\, and he is a GRAMMY Award winner. \nTowering above virtually everything that Graham Nash has accomplished in his multi-faceted career stands the litany of songs that he has written and introduced to the soundtrack of the past half-century. His remarkable body of work\, beginning with his contributions to the Hollies opus\, including “On a Carousel” and “Carrie Anne\,” continues all the way to Now (2023)\, his most recent solo album. \nThe original classic union of Crosby\, Stills & Nash (& Young) lasted but twenty months.  Yet their songs are lightning rods embedded in our DNA\, starting with Nash’s “Marrakesh Express\,” and “Lady of the Island\,” from the first Crosby\, Stills & Nash LP (1969)\, and “Teach Your Children” and “Our House” on CSNY’s Déjà Vu (1970). \nNash’s solo career debuted with Songs For Beginners (1971)\, which included “Chicago/We Can Change the World” and “Military Madness” and others. In addition to his string of solo albums\, he has performed and recorded with David Crosby as Crosby/Nash. Their eponymously titled Graham Nash/David Crosby (1972) is bookended by Nash’s “Southbound Train” and “Immigration Man”.
