SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special – 11/8 – 2 Bands from UT Appalachian Strings
DESCRIPTION:About UT Appalachian Strings\nUT musicology faculty and local Knoxville musician\, Sean McCollough\, created the first-ever UT Appalachian string-band ensemble in the spring semester of 2022. By spring of 2023\, one student band had grown into two. The two current bands play mostly bluegrass – though one of them includes some modern Americana songs in their repertory. Sean’s hope is that there may be enough interest in the future to also have an old-time band\, an Americana band and perhaps even a country band. If you are a UT student and are interested in joining one of the bands\, email Sean at sean@utk.edu. \n

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special – 11/10 – Michael Delisle / Pete Erlandsen
DESCRIPTION:My music has roots in blues\, old folk\, outlaw country\, and acoustic adaptations of 60s and early 70s tunes (I’m a genuine old fart\, turned 75 a while back)\, as well as several dozen tunes I wrote myself. \nI began performing in my teens and played regularly through the 60s\, 70s\, 80s\, and early 90s\, starting up in the midwest with bands like Appaloosa\, Pythea’s Tribe\, Briarwood Thyme\, and the Smokin’ Grays\, and working as a solo artist\, too. \nUpon moving to Tennessee in 1982 I put together a great blues and southern rock band\, the Michael Brothers Band\, with Knoxville lead guitar stalwart Michael Jordan. We rocked it till the early 90s\, and after stints with Mojo and The Works\, I kinda retired when son Jesse was born\, and didn’t pick it back up till about 2014. But as soon as I started back\, I started playing every day\, actually more than when I played out so much. \nYou’d think that somebody who’d been playing almost 60 years oughta be damn good by now\, but I’m living proof that’s not always true. I consider myself fair to middling: I can hold a decent rhythm\, know quite a few chord voicings\, can forge my way through leads and fills\, and play most of the parts on my recordings. \nI’ve done hundreds of open mic performances over the past several years\, along with dozens of gigs and house concerts. Jesse comes out to most of the shows and has almost as much fun as I do. Bottom line? I’m loving it all and intend to keep at it as long as I’m able. \n \nPete Erlandsen will also join us this day.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special – 11/12 – Stephen Simmons
DESCRIPTION:In the years since his first album\, 2004’s Last Call\, Nashville singer-songwriter Stephen Simmons has wandered the wide landscape of American roots music\, from contemplative country and finger-picked folk to rugged and ragged blues-rock. \nOn his 12th album\, Hunch\, released October 24\, 2025\, he hints at the thread that ties 20 years of ideas together. \n“It makes me feel better when I tap into the truth” he sings in the closing track on Hunch\, “Someone Like You\,” a ballad brimming with Rhodes chimes and gentle longing. \nTapping into the truth doesn’t only mean one thing\, and the 10 tracks on Hunch show the breadth of what it means to mine what feels real\, from connection and disconnection to wonder\, sorrow\, reflection and confusion. \n“It’s not therapy\, but it’s therapeutic\,” Simmons says. “People talk about when you first start writing\, sometimes it’s almost like clearing your throat. You’re not really at the thing yet\, and sometimes you write for a while before you get in some kind of flow. And then something starts coming together. And when you feel it\, you know it’s true — and you didn’t know yet how you were gonna say it ’til it comes out. It’s gratifying.” \nHunch’s predecessor\, 2020’s Family Album\, explored the truth of where Simmons comes from in deep detail\, with 18 songs about family and hidden history captured inside his grandmother’s empty house in Woodbury\, Tennessee. \nReleased amid the pandemic\, it originated and unintentionally stayed close to home\, as Simmons and so many of his contemporaries got stuck introducing and supporting new music virtually\, smartphone sets streaming from living room to living room. \nHunch is the post-pandemic door flung wide open\, carrying Simmons back to the road and miles away from Tennessee. He’s in a Dresden sushi bar\, wondering how and why love sparks. He’s in a rented car in Amsterdam\, tracing what takes us toward wrong turns. He’s gazing at the moon. \nBut wherever Hunch travels\, the narratives always seem to pull Simmons back home. \nMid-tempo country cut “Grandpa’s Jacket” considers how we crave ties to where we came from\, even while we chase adventure. The album’s title track\, while just as imbued with truth\, comes at life decisions with a wink and a bluesy lurch. Everyone had ideas for where that kid from Woodbury might go. But\, “Uncle Glen had the best plan of the bunch\,” Simmons sings\, “strummin’ on the guitar and live your life on a hunch.” \n“That’s the only one that’s a little cheeky\,” Simmons says. “It’s tongue-in-cheek. It’s a blues-rock song. Then everything else goes a completely different direction. I don’t know why\, it just kinda felt like a pivot.” \nTo render the full pivot\, Simmons turned to folks who’ve been part of his musical story tracing almost back to when he first left Woodbury. \nGoffrey Moore (Jonatha Brooke\, Maia Sharp) produced Hunch in his Madison\, Tennessee\, studio\, and he and Simmons invited contributions from lap and pedal steel player Paul Niehaus\, singer/pianist Molly Jewell\, bassists Dave Jacques and Billy Mercer\, and drummers Matthew Crouse and Bryan Owings. \nAll accomplished players who’ve collaborated with country and Americana greats from John Prine to Patty Griffin\, they’ve all played with Simmons on various songs and stages over decades. \nThese well- and long-established personal and musical connections allowed Moore and Simmons to experiment in comfort\, letting songs go where they seemed to want to. The songwriter’s initial intent was to hole up in Moore’s century-old cabin to capture a stripped-down set. But as the recording progressed and friends came in\, Hunch took a more dynamic and textured turn. \n“It was a different way to do it for me\,” Simmons says. “It kinda lent itself to\, like\, ‘OK\, well\, maybe we’ll go big on this one.’ And then all of a sudden\, it presents itself.” \nCall it following intuition. Call it living on a hunch.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Big Plate – 11/21 – Mic Harrison & The High Score
DESCRIPTION:On April 7\, 1862\, the morning after the first day of the battle of Shiloh in West Tennessee\, it frosted. The peach trees that were on the fields where the battle took place had recently blossomed and fell with the frost\, covering the dead bodies of the young soldiers like pink snow. As a child growing up in the 1970s\, Mic Harrison had no idea of the significance that Shiloh held in history. He only knew that it was his family’s favorite place for picnics and reunions. \nThose memories make up “Picnic at Shiloh\,” the final track on Harrison’s new album\, “Peach Blossom Youth.” Now a noted singer-songwriter and amateur historian\, Harrison feels the full irony of the sweet memories contrasted with the area’s bloody past. \nHarrison has been writing songs since he was a high school student in Bradford\, Tenn. \n“Even early on I hardly ever wrote songs about girls and all that\,” says Harrison. “I wrote about life\, history… that stuff.” \nHarrison moved to Knoxville in the 1990s to join proto-Americana act The V-Roys\, and later joined power pop favorites Superdrag before recording his solo album “Pallbearer’s Shoes.” When he teamed up with The High Score early in the new millennium he found the perfect collaborators. The band now consists of guitarists Robbie Trosper and Kevin Abernathy\, bassist Vance Hillard and drummer Mark T. Dunn. Harrison’s 20-year collaboration with The High Score has resulted in a stack of albums as well featured spots in music festivals\, including Bonnaroo\, Rhythm N’ Blooms\, and Easyriders Rodeo\, and national tours in elegant concert halls\, sweaty bars\, and listening rooms across America. \nTo make sure the recording of these new songs were as good as possible\, Harrison brought in famed producer Eric “Roscoe” Ambel\, whose credits include producing albums for The Bottle Rockets\, Nils Lofgren\, The Backsliders\, and many others\, co-leading the Del-Lords and The Yayhoos\, as well as playing guitar with Joan Jett and the Blackhearts and Steve Earle. \n“Sonically\, this is the best record we’ve ever done\,” says Harrison. \nNearly all of the songs are about real people – from a West Tennessee character named Bobby Jack\, who inspired “Scrap Iron Man” to a Mexican American War soldier in the song “Dallas Sutton.” \n“A lot of these songs are very personal\,” says Harrison. “It could be a book.” \n“Lose You Over This” was written after a family member’s suicide attempt. “Keep Drivin’” was inspired by a beloved niece being kicked out of church because she is gay. “Old Man” is about Harrison’s late father\, who died of Alzheimer’s disease. \nWith their upbeat melodies and energetic delivery\, it would be easy to miss the sometimes-dark subject matter of Harrison’s new songs. Yet\, that’s what makes this and all of Harrison’s work special. It draws you in and delivers a good time\, but if you care to dig a little deeper\, there’s plenty more to discover. \n– Wayne Bledsoe

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special – 11/22 – Will Kruger / Chris Long
DESCRIPTION:Kruger shares a style that recalls many of his earliest folk music influences\, among them\, Peter\, Paul and Mary\, Simon & Garfunkel\, Gordon Lightfoot\, John Denver and James Taylor in particular. \nHe’s toured nationally\, sharing his “Folk Legend’s Tribute Show” at house concerts\, libraries\, conservation events\, coffee houses\, corporate functions and larger auditoriums in addition to appearances at a number of Nashville venues. \nFour of his songs were featured in the films\, “God Where Are You” and “Grace Of The Father.” In addition\, he played the part of Noel Paul Stookey in the nationally touring Las Vegas tribute group\, “Peter Paul & Mary Alive\,” for several years. \nKruger\, who performs regularly in East Tennessee at The Smoky Mountain Brewery\, The Listening Room Cafe\, Calhoun’s\, and The Abbey\, said he’s been playing music over 50 years. “Music can convey emotion on so many levels\,” he said. “Music does that for me. The songs that I write touch on love\, relationships\, and faith. If I can communicate those things with my audience and touch their hearts\, then all the work that I do is well worth it. I have a saying: ‘Have I ever told you how much I love music?”‘ \n \nSinger-songwriter Chris Long\, music is an adventure that keeps getting better and better. He grew up with a father who was a musician\, and learned to play guitar at age 12. Since then\, the adventure’s just kept going. Chris Long writes and performs music from the Heartland\, Roots Rock & Americana genres. \nChris played in two bands with his father in the late 90s and early 2000s. They played together in the bands Sloe Ginn and Stonewall Gray. Since then\, he’s moved away from performing with a group to focus on a career as a solo singer-songwriter. He has performed across the US and internationally\, including performances at Nashville’s famed Bluebird Cafe and The Commodore. Chris has graced the stages of Dollywood’s famed DreamMore Resort\, Jim Oliver’s Smokehouse and the infamous WDVX “Blue Plate Special” along with radio & television appearances. \nChris’s music blends Americana and rock to create a rough yet classic sound. His focus is on telling stories of everyday life and the world around him through his songs. He’s heavily influenced by Bruce Springsteen\, John Mellencamp\, and Creedence Clearwater Revival. The sounds of classic rock come through in his music. He’s also a history teacher\, something that’s had a strong impact on his songwriting. He says\, “For me\, music has to mean something. I love songs that speak about life and the world we live in. That’s the music that tells our story. That’s the music we carry with us throughout life.” \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special – 11/29 – Andy Miller
DESCRIPTION:Hey there\, I’m Andy Miller. I’m just a guy from East Tennessee who’s been blessed to write songs since 1995. That year was a big one for me… it’s when I met Jesus. I was 30 years old when He changed my life\, and with the help of the Holy Spirit\, I’ve been walking with Him ever since. \nThese days\, I call Knoxville home. I’ve been married to my wonderful wife for almost 28 years\, and we’ve got a son\, Drew\, who’s about to start at UT. (GO VOLS!) \nIf you’re into Gospel music\, you’ll find some of the songs God’s laid on my heart on all the major streaming platforms\, just search for Andy Miller. I also host a little radio show on WKXV 900 AM every Monday at 7PM\, where I sing and share the stories behind the songs God’s given me. I love having other songwriters on the show too\, so they can share what God’s doing through their music. I’d be honored if you’d give us a listen. \nRight now\, I’m working on a new CD\, and Lord willing\, it’ll be ready by the end of June. I truly hope these songs stir your heart the way they’ve stirred mine. \nThanks for stopping by. I’m excited to see what God has in store for the road ahead. \nGod bless you\, Andy \n

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special – 12/4 – Maddye Trew Band
DESCRIPTION:It’s not enough to climb the ladder of success for Memphis-born Maddye Trew–she wants to share each rung with others on the way up. Armed with a degree in Commercial Music from Belmont University and a “country-as-cornbread” charm\, Trew splits her time between chasing her own career and advocating for others from her chosen musical family as the co-host of Kickin’ Kountry 101’s weekly Breakin’ Indies Country Countdown syndicated on iHeart digital and the McMahon on Keys podcast. \nTrew’s own talent led her to her first appearance on a national broadcast stage as a “golden ticket” winner on American Idol at the age of 17. While still a newcomer to Nashville’s musical trenches\, Trew has been a featured guest on the nationally syndicated Jimmy Bowen & Friends\, had her music featured on CMT\, made her songwriter debut at The Bluebird Cafe\, opened for Big & Rich\, performed with Lee Greenwood\, and released several singles with plans to release her debut EP\, Here Goes Nothin’\, later this year.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special – 12/6 – 2 groups of UT Appalachian Strings

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special – 12/9 – Pat Beasley / Seth Beamer
DESCRIPTION:East Tennessee’s Own Pat Beasley will join us this day. \n \nSeth Beamer is a Nashville-based songwriter whose musical style channels the anthemic energy of the early 2000s\, bringing a fresh perspective to forever-summer nostalgia. A musician by nature\, Seth can turn a half-heard melody into something completely new\, blending unexpected compositions with radio-friendly hooks. \nInspired by life’s highs and lows\, his songs are at times candid and poignant and at others up-tempo and angsty. Seth continues to define his successful solo career\, most recently releasing singles like The Runaround\, Perfectly Impossible\, Picture Perfect\, and Devil On My Shoulder. \nSeth has toured across the country and\, most recently\, shared the stage with international artists\, Ryan Tedder\, Lovejoy\, Colony House\, Sheppard\, and Weathers. He has performed at—and\, more often than not\, sold out—Colorado’s most iconic venues and festivals\, including Westword Music Showcase\, Underground Music Showcase\, and KTCL’s sold-out Not So Silent Night. Seth has won 93.3’s Hometown for the Holidays (twice) and Big Gig. \nA staple in the Denver music scene\, Seth was formerly a founding member and the guitarist of indie rock band Wildermiss\, the bassist for local quartet Red Fox Run\, and has performed with notable local artists such as Rob Drabkin\, Eldren\, Brent Cowles\, One Flew West\, Andy Sydow\, Lazer & Levi\, Cristina Vane\, Pandas & People and Elektric Animals. \nSeth has had successful sync placements with MTV\, Netflix\, the NFL\, Intuit QuickBooks advertisements\, Colorado Tourism\, Denver’s COVID-19 Stay-at-Home public service announcements\, and the ever- popular Sesame Street. \nFollow Seth to stay in touch.
