SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special - 10/27 – Michael Dinallo / Jon Byrd
DESCRIPTION:Michael Dinallo is an award winning Producer\, Guitarist\, & Songwriter from Boston\, Massachusetts. \n \nBorn in Birmingham\, Alabama\, JON BYRD lived his formative years in small town America\, deep in the piney woods of south Alabama just one county over from the birthplace of legendary country artist Hank Williams. In the 90s Jon became pivotal in Atlanta’s storied Redneck Underground music scene. Always a featured sideman\, Jon’s first solo recording didn’t come along until after migrating to Music City nearly 20 years ago. Jon’s fourth solo album DIRTY OL’ RIVER harkens back to the first Byrd’s Auto Parts record: up-tempo country songs\, lots of pedal steel\, and some really strong country covers. Jon’s originals “I Get Lost” and “If Texas Is So Great” will be heard for years to come. \nWhen Jon Byrd was just eight years old\, his dad was diagnosed with TB and began singing the immortal Jimmie Rogers’ song “TB Blues” all around the house. That same year Jon saw the Beatles on Ed Sullivan and his obsession with the musical tension between country and rock ‘n’ roll was born. Less than two years later he was conscripted into the drum corps of his tiny high school’s marching band and played Booker T. and the MG’s “Green Onions” while the majorettes held the cymbals and danced. There was no turning back. \nAfter touring nationally with jangle-pop purists Tim Lee and the Windbreakers\, and Birmingham’s Primitons in the 1980s\, the 1990s saw Byrd attempting a Ph.D. in American Studies at Emory University in Atlanta… all while becoming a central figure in Atlanta’s storied Redneck Underground music scene as lead guitarist for the seminal and legendary country band Slim Chance and the Convicts (Letters to Mama\, 1993\, and Twang Peaks\, 1996). He also formed the hard country band the Ratchet Set as a musical outlet for his love of old trucking songs and two chord honky-tonk gems.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special - 10/29 – Sam Varga
DESCRIPTION:Kentucky-born songwriter Sam Varga fuses the energy and wit of the emo scene he cut his teeth on as a kid with the craft and sonics of Nashville\, bringing forth an alchemic blend of rock/alt-country that’s an addictive kind of hurt. His forthcoming debut album “Shadow Work”\, born in the emo diaspora of Nashville\, takes the best of both worlds and arrives at something uniquely his own.\n(From the movie My Country Heart)

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special – 11/1 – 2 Bands from UT Appalachian Strings
DESCRIPTION:About UT Appalachian Strings\nUT musicology faculty and local Knoxville musician\, Sean McCollough\, created the first-ever UT Appalachian string-band ensemble in the spring semester of 2022. By spring of 2023\, one student band had grown into two. The two current bands play mostly bluegrass – though one of them includes some modern Americana songs in their repertory. Sean’s hope is that there may be enough interest in the future to also have an old-time band\, an Americana band and perhaps even a country band. SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special – 11/4 – Mike Snodgrass
DESCRIPTION:Mike was born on the 11th day of December in Clarksburg\, WV. Growing up in Oak Hill\, WV\, Mike was always involved in music. He started playing drums at a young age and stuck with it all through college. While in college at West Virginia University Institute of Technology\, where Mike studied Engineering\, He started getting serious about playing his guitar that he picked up late in high school. Although his singing voice was at its beginning stages\, it would later become one of the attributes people most comment about his music.\nAfter college\, Mike worked at a small Engineering firm in Mt. Hope\, WV for a couple of years. In that time he grew and grew in the local music scene with “The Mike-n-Rob Experience”. Mike was laid off from his job and soon decided that music would be his full time career. Two years after his big decision of “Living the Dream”\, Mike decided to relocate to Knoxville\, TN.\nMike then started developing his unique style that is difficult to describe. Taking influences from people like Dave Matthews\, Jason Mraz\, Amos Lee\, Marc Broussard\, Ray LaMontange\, and other Singer/Songwriters\, Mike has a wide mix of Soul\, Funk\, Blues\, Americana\, and Folk displayed in his own music.\nMany people have commented on his “unique and powerful voice” as well as his ability to play guitar and harmonica simultaneously so well! However you describe his music\, he is sure to keep you entertained and engaged.

SUMMARY:Tennessee Shines - 11/5 - East Nash Grass / A.J. Lee & Blue Summit / Alex Leach\, Wyatt Ellis / The Po' Ramblin' Boys
DESCRIPTION:East Tennessee’s Own WDVX presents Tennessee Shines Radio Show Wednesday night\, November 5th at 7PM at the historic Bijou Theatre in downtown Knoxville. It’s WDVX’s 28th Birthday Party!\, and to celebrate we’re bringing AJ Lee and Blue Summit\, East Nash Grass\, The Po’ Ramblin Boys\, Alex Leach\, Wyatt Ellis and your host Jim Lauderdale to the Tennessee Shines stage\, for a full night of live Bluegrass at the Bijou on November 5th. \nCLICK HERE FOR TICKETS! \nAJ Lee & Blue Summit are an award-winning\, energetic\, charming\, and technically jaw-dropping band — and one of the most exciting and fast-rising Bluegrass / Americana bands on the scene today. Based in the California Bay Area\, the group met as teenagers\, picking and jamming together as kids at local bluegrass festivals. Currently made up of AJ Lee on mandolin\, fiddler Jan Purat\, guitarists Scott Gates and Sullivan Tuttle (younger brother of Molly Tuttle)\, and bassist Sean Newman\, the band still carries that youthful\, festival-parking-lot energy with them\, yet there’s a genuine ease and confidence to their music making. A breakout year for the band\, 2024 saw them release their critically acclaimed album\, “City of Glass\,” their first label release on Signature Sounds recordings\, combined with becoming one of the most in-demand bands in the Bluegrass scene. In 2025\, the band continues to pack major venues around the country\, along with major festival plays\, and the release of “Cover to Cover V1\,” an EP of cover songs being released throughout the year. \n \nCLICK HERE FOR TICKETS! \nEast Nash Grass exemplifies the best of what bluegrass has to offer — as being named the 2024 IBMA (International Bluegrass Music Association) New Artist of the Year would suggest. But their talent as singers\, instrumentalists\, and composers is just the beginning. The secret to East Nash Grass lies in their unflinching ability to be themselves. It certainly helps that they are a veritable supergroup of award-winners who have been performing longer than some might guess they’ve been alive\, with experience working with Dan Tyminski\, Tim O’Brien\, Sierra Hull\, and Rhonda Vincent\, as just a start. After hundreds of sets (and countless late-night jams) in Nashville\, East Nash Grass has coalesced into the hair-raising ensemble of Harry Clark (mandolin)\, Cory Walker (banjo)\, James Kee (guitar)\, Maddie Denton (fiddle)\, and Jeff Partin (bass/dobro). Their love of both bluegrass and the absurd can be felt in both their live shows and on their new album “All God’s Children” (Mountain Fever\, 2025)\, which keep listeners on the edge of their seats\, marveling at irrefutable mastery and wondering just what might come next. \n \nCLICK HERE FOR TICKETS! \nIn 10 years as a band\, The Po’ Ramblin’ Boys have covered a lot of miles. Their love of bluegrass — playing it\, sharing it\, growing it — has been the fuel for their remarkable journey through every corner of America and into the hearts of fans drawn to their hard-charging\, true-blue sound. \n“We live what we play and sing about\,” says bandleader C.J. Lewandowski. Indeed\, the band has weathered their fair share of the highs and lows that bluegrass songs are known for (except for the murders\, of course). They’ve been road-weary\, longing for home. They’ve felt the heartbreak of band members leaving and embraced the joy of welcoming new ones. They’ve worked hard to see their dreams come true\, playing on some of music’s most celebrated stages. And they’ve been nominated for a Grammy for Best Bluegrass Album (2019’s Toil\, Tears & Trouble) and for the International Bluegrass Music Association’s Entertainer of the Year award. \nAmid all their travels\, The Po’ Ramblin’ Boys have seen every nook and cranny of the country\, met people from all walks of life\, and kept a keen eye toward the truth\, which rings out loud and clear in the songs they write. “Wanderers Like Me\,” the title track from their most recent album and the band’s first No. 1 song on the Bluegrass Unlimited chart\, shoots straight from the heart: “Wanderers like me don’t settle down for no one / don’t mind being lonesome\, chasing dreams is all I ever need.” \nLately\, they’ve been chasing their dreams in a new configuration\, one that expands the band’s age span and geographical roots. Guitarist John Gooding from California and fiddle player Max Silverstein from “the great bluegrass state of Maine\,” as the band likes to say during onstage introductions\, are the newest additions\, both in their 20s. They join Lewandowski on mandolin\, Jereme Brown on banjo\, and Jasper Lorentzen on bass\, relative elders in their 30s. \nLewandowski describes this new chapter for the band as one of “expansion and growth.” There’s a new energy to the group onstage\, with appreciative glances and the occasional good-natured laugh between them as they play. They’re listening to each other and responding. And audience members feel like part of the conversation. \nThe Po’ Ramblin’ Boys have always been known for barreling bluegrass forward\, and as they move into their second decade as a band\, they’re maintaining that momentum\, both onstage and in the studio. Lewandowski envisions the band’s next project as “kicking it back to the beginning and cutting a record that is solid damn ’grass.” And then\, of course\, they’ll take it right back on the road\, living what they sing about and sharing it with others\, just the way they like it. \n“We take bluegrass and put it where bluegrass isn’t\,” says Lewandowski. “It’s not about putting music that is different into bluegrass music to attract more people.” \n \nCLICK HERE FOR TICKETS! \nAlex Leach and his band are redefining modern roots music and bluegrass\, bringing exceptional musicianship and high energy to every stage. Bluegrass Today praises them for their skill and exuberance\, marking Alex as a leading figure in the young bluegrass vanguard. \n \nCLICK HERE FOR TICKETS! \nWyatt Ellis has achieved more milestones in his 16 years than most musicians achieve in a lifetime. The teen multi-instrumentalist from East Tennessee is rapidly emerging as one of bluegrass music’s brightest stars. With a fiery passion and a profound respect for the genre’s traditions\, he skillfully blends the influences of bluegrass pioneers with youthful energy. Known for his virtuosic mandolin playing\, soulful vocals\, and original songwriting\, Wyatt has built a dedicated fanbase excited to support him as he grows up before their eyes. His band performances\, marked by raw energy and tight harmonies\, breathe new life into traditional bluegrass\, seamlessly fusing the rich traditions of Appalachia with a modern edge. \nWyatt and his bluegrass band are picking up steam as one of the most exciting young acts in bluegrass today. Each member brings their own authentic Appalachian flavor. Performing around a single microphone in the classic Appalachian style\, the band’s live shows echo with the sound of high-lonesome harmony\, powerful rhythm\, and blazing solos. Their stage presence and chemistry evoke the timeless spirit of bluegrass while offering something fresh and compelling. From the Grand Ole Opry to festivals like MerleFest\, Gray Fox\, and Big Ears\, Wyatt Ellis and his bluegrass band are gaining momentum and turning heads at every stop. With a debut band album on the horizon and a growing national fanbase climbing aboard\, Wyatt Ellis and his bluegrass band are rolling forward on a track laid by the legends\, bringing youthful energy to the heart of tradition. \nWyatt’s talent has earned him notable recognition\, including the title of Momentum Instrumentalist of the Year and an unprecedented nomination at age 15 for New Artist at the International Bluegrass Music Association Award Show in 2024. His virtuosity and understanding of the roots of traditional bluegrass have earned collaborations with bluegrass pioneers Peter Rowan\, Marty Stuart\, and Bobby Osborne. His rise to prominence has been featured in Rolling Stone and The Tennessean\, cementing his place in the spotlight. Wyatt’s innovative approach to traditional bluegrass has already begun to influence the next wave of acoustic musicians\, furthering his generational impact on the genre. \nIn 2024\, Wyatt made his solo debut at the Newport Folk Festival\, and his band became a fan favorite at major festivals such as Gray Fox\, MerleFest\, and Big Ears. That same year\, Wyatt was a guest of Dailey & Vincent at age 13 and became a regular performer on the Grand Ole Opry after making his official Opry debut playing original music with his own band at just 14 years old. Wyatt’s debut album reached number one on Billboard’s bluegrass sales chart in its first month of release\, with multiple songs charting as bluegrass airplay number one hits. Ten of his twelve tracks charted in the Top 10\, with “Blue Smoke” holding steady there for most of the year\, solidifying his status as one of the genre’s most promising emerging talents. \nIn January of 2025\, Wyatt released Winds of Rowan County alongside bluegrass legend Peter Rowan\, a collaboration that honors Rowan’s legacy while passing the torch of the “old-school” to bluegrass music’s newest flame-keeper. Currently\, Wyatt is preparing to release a debut vocal album\, which will feature brand new original material. This album marks a significant milestone in his career and promises to showcase even more of his unique sound and growing artistry. With relentless dedication to his craft\, Wyatt is making a lasting impression on the bluegrass world and beyond. As he continues to push boundaries\, Wyatt is poised to captivate music lovers around the world. You won’t want to miss the next chapter in this unstoppable young artist’s journey. \n \nCLICK HERE FOR TICKETS! \n \n \n

SUMMARY:The WDVX Big Plate – 11/7 – Larry & Joe
DESCRIPTION:Larry & Joe were destined to make music together. \nLarry Bellorín hails from Monagas\, Venezuela and is a legend of Llanera music. Joe Troop is from North Carolina and is a GRAMMY-nominated bluegrass and oldtime musician. Larry was forced into exile and is an asylum seeker in North Carolina. Joe\, after a decade in South America\, got stranded back in his stomping grounds in the pandemic. Larry worked construction to make ends meet. Joe’s acclaimed “latingrass” band Che Apalache was forced into hiatus\, and he shifted into action working with asylum seeking migrants. Then Larry met Joe. \nCurrently based in the Triangle of North Carolina\, both men are versatile multi-instrumentalists and singer-songwriters on a mission to show that music has no borders. As a duo they perform a fusion of Venezuelan and Appalachian folk music on harp\, banjo\, cuatro\, fiddle\, maracas\, guitar\, upright bass\, and whatever else they decide to throw in the van. The program they offer features a distinct blend of their musical inheritances and traditions as well as storytelling about the ways that music and social movements coalesce. \nLARRY BELLORÍN \nLarry Bellorín grew up in Punta de Mata in the state of Monagas\, Venezuela. His mother\, a poor farmworker\, raised him. By age 6\, he became a shoe shiner and built a faithful clientele by singing as he polished\, taking requests for the popular Vallenatos of the day. He eventually caught the attention of a local music educator who invited him to study at the city’s premiere music school. \nLarry’s first instrument was the cuatro\, a 4-string guitar with Spanish roots central to the Venezuelan identity and typically the first instrument a folk musician is taught there. Cuatristas strum out complex polyrhythms at dizzying speeds as accompaniment for vocalists and harpists. Larry quickly excelled and by age 11 was supporting himself through music alone. He soon became proficient on guitar\, electric bass\, mandolin and maracas as well. By age 13\, he was well-versed in the folk music of his region (valse\, pasaje\, joropo\, música oriental) and was honored as first cuatrista for the local Casa de Cultura. \nAfter filling in on cuatro for a friend on a gig at a local pizzeria\, Larry met an authentic llanera harpist named Urbino Ruiz\, who immediately took him under his wing as an apprentice. After only a month of tutelage\, Larry had a repertoire of 40 songs. “I played so much\, I would wake up hunched over my harp\,” he recalls. \nIn 1999\, Urbano invited Larry to perform with him alongside Venezuelan cultural treasure Renaldo Armas at the Punta de Mata’s Parque Ferial. After playing\, Armas\, a GRAMMY winner and the country’s most well known champion of Llanera music\, introduced him to the crowd of more than 8\,000 people as “el maestro Larry Bellorín.” From that point forward\, Larry was respected as such. \nLarry went on to accompany countless Venezuelan musical luminaries including Cristina Maica\, Teo Galindez\, and Rumi Olivo. While touring the country as a performer\, he and his wife opened Casa Vieja\, a school dedicated to teaching Música Llanera. In three years\, he taught nearly five hundred students and launched Monagas’ first Musicá Llanera festival. \nInspired by the success of Gustavo Dudamel’s orchestral program El Sistema\, the state-funded parallel folk program Alma Llanera aimed to enrich the lives of and promote cultural heritage to children through Venezuela’s folk music. Larry taught harp\, cuatro\, and vocals to countless students. \nIn 2012 Venezuela began to collapse\, and it became impossible to maintain a music school. Poverty and violence reached unprecedented extremes\, and new political realities threatened Larry and his family’s lives. He decided to go to the United States in search of work and asylum for his family. He arrived with only thirty dollars and slept on the floor of an unfurnished room while doing construction day labor. His wife and young daughter eventually joined him. Having faced political persecution\, they were able to open a case for asylum. Larry has endured wage theft and several work site injuries but continues to look to the future with hope. \nPrior to the pandemic\, Larry was beginning to find work as a musician in North Carolina\, playing bass in Salsa bands and booking his own Venezuelan folk group across the state. But the pandemic’s restrictions on social gatherings ended those opportunities\, and Larry returned to full time construction work. \nJOE TROOP \nJoe Troop is a multi-instrumentalist\, singer\, and songwriter hailing originally from Winston-Salem\, North Carolina. The founder of GRAMMY-nominated stringband Che Apalache\, Joe’s music is deeply inspired by his decade living in Buenos Aires and traveling throughout Latin America. When the pandemic unexpectedly landed him back in North Carolina\, he spent 2020 learning direct action from stalwart organizers. In 2021 he channeled that energy into his homecoming album Borrowed Time. The record was co-produced with Jason Richmond (The Avett Brothers\, Branford Marsalis) and features luminaries like Béla Fleck (who produced Che Apalache’s GRAMMY-nominated album)\, Abigail Washburn\, Tim O’Brien\, and Charlie Hunter\, but the visceral songwriting and fine-crafted instrumentals speak for themselves. Joe’s music reflects both his time spent living abroad as well as his upbringing in the North Carolina Piedmont. Now based in Durham\, he leads various ensembles which play his original music.

SUMMARY:First Friday Live - 11-7 - Sophie Gault
DESCRIPTION:Sophie Gault has always been a little unhinged. A Nashville-based Americana rocker with a midnight voice and an eye and ear for last call rock and roll\, she writes songs that swagger\, stumble\, wink\, and bleed. With her third full-length album\, Unhinged\, Gault triples down on the risk-taking drive that has revved her from dive bars to the big tents\, crafting a record that feels at once deeply personal and side-eye defiant. \nUnhinged is a dare. A fast\, reckless\, one-eye-open ride through cow-punk Buck Owens\, punked-up Robert Johnson\, outlaw cruise mischief\, shipwreck coins\, blackjack tables\, and backroom heartbreak. It’s the sound of someone doubling down on 17 when everyone screams “No!”—and winning. It’s the smell of whiskey and Monte Cristos at 2 AM; the taste of cheap red wine mixed with heat lightning\, then you cross a forbidden line while laughing to the stars. \nBorn with a restless streak that fuels musical infernos\, Gault quickly found her place among the city’s creative underground. Over the years\, her biting songwriting and electric live presence have made her a name to circle on the Americana scene\, praised for both her razor-edged honesty and her sly sense of humor. The songs on Unhinged twist between the sly revenge of “Merlot Dodge Dart\,” the fingerpicked confession of “Chestnut St\,” the cocky sway of the title track\, and the tender\, water-lit ache of “Is There Anyone Out There\,” sung with Gurf Morlix himself. \nTradition gets honored\, flipped\, and satisfyingly kicked over—from classic Nashville to Robert Johnson to the ballad from Gurf that no one else would think to touch. Across ten tracks\, Gault raises a glass to the chaos of life\, leans into the messiness of desire and reinvention\, and proves that the most outlaw thing you can do is trust your gut and live with the outcome. \nDirty guitars snarl like a late-night confession\, and grooves pull you headlong into the storm. Her voice can smolder one moment and cut like a Katana the next—raw yet deliberate\, wild yet anchored in a truth that refuses to apologize. \nWith Unhinged\, Sophie Gault has solidified her place as one of Nashville’s most compelling voices\, an artist who isn’t afraid to take chances and tell the truth—even when it stings\, even when it doesn’t wrap up neatly. It’s the sound of a songwriter who has stopped caring about fitting into boxes\, and scoffs at boxes altogether. Above all: life is too short to play it safe. Raise a glass\, place your bet\, and get a little Unhinged.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special – 11/8 – 2 Bands from UT Appalachian Strings
If you are a UT student and are interested in joining one of the bands\, email Sean at sean@utk.edu. \n

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special – 11/10 – Michael Delisle / Pete Erlandsen
DESCRIPTION:My music has roots in blues\, old folk\, outlaw country\, and acoustic adaptations of 60s and early 70s tunes (I’m a genuine old fart\, turned 75 a while back)\, as well as several dozen tunes I wrote myself. \nI began performing in my teens and played regularly through the 60s\, 70s\, 80s\, and early 90s\, starting up in the midwest with bands like Appaloosa\, Pythea’s Tribe\, Briarwood Thyme\, and the Smokin’ Grays\, and working as a solo artist\, too. \nUpon moving to Tennessee in 1982 I put together a great blues and southern rock band\, the Michael Brothers Band\, with Knoxville lead guitar stalwart Michael Jordan. We rocked it till the early 90s\, and after stints with Mojo and The Works\, I kinda retired when son Jesse was born\, and didn’t pick it back up till about 2014. But as soon as I started back\, I started playing every day\, actually more than when I played out so much. \nYou’d think that somebody who’d been playing almost 60 years oughta be damn good by now\, but I’m living proof that’s not always true. I consider myself fair to middling: I can hold a decent rhythm\, know quite a few chord voicings\, can forge my way through leads and fills\, and play most of the parts on my recordings. \nI’ve done hundreds of open mic performances over the past several years\, along with dozens of gigs and house concerts. Jesse comes out to most of the shows and has almost as much fun as I do. Bottom line? I’m loving it all and intend to keep at it as long as I’m able. \n \nPete Erlandsen will also join us this day.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special – 11/12 – Stephen Simmons
DESCRIPTION:In the years since his first album\, 2004’s Last Call\, Nashville singer-songwriter Stephen Simmons has wandered the wide landscape of American roots music\, from contemplative country and finger-picked folk to rugged and ragged blues-rock. \nOn his 12th album\, Hunch\, released October 24\, 2025\, he hints at the thread that ties 20 years of ideas together. \n“It makes me feel better when I tap into the truth” he sings in the closing track on Hunch\, “Someone Like You\,” a ballad brimming with Rhodes chimes and gentle longing. \nTapping into the truth doesn’t only mean one thing\, and the 10 tracks on Hunch show the breadth of what it means to mine what feels real\, from connection and disconnection to wonder\, sorrow\, reflection and confusion. \n“It’s not therapy\, but it’s therapeutic\,” Simmons says. “People talk about when you first start writing\, sometimes it’s almost like clearing your throat. You’re not really at the thing yet\, and sometimes you write for a while before you get in some kind of flow. And then something starts coming together. And when you feel it\, you know it’s true — and you didn’t know yet how you were gonna say it ’til it comes out. It’s gratifying.” \nHunch’s predecessor\, 2020’s Family Album\, explored the truth of where Simmons comes from in deep detail\, with 18 songs about family and hidden history captured inside his grandmother’s empty house in Woodbury\, Tennessee. \nReleased amid the pandemic\, it originated and unintentionally stayed close to home\, as Simmons and so many of his contemporaries got stuck introducing and supporting new music virtually\, smartphone sets streaming from living room to living room. \nHunch is the post-pandemic door flung wide open\, carrying Simmons back to the road and miles away from Tennessee. He’s in a Dresden sushi bar\, wondering how and why love sparks. He’s in a rented car in Amsterdam\, tracing what takes us toward wrong turns. He’s gazing at the moon. \nBut wherever Hunch travels\, the narratives always seem to pull Simmons back home. \nMid-tempo country cut “Grandpa’s Jacket” considers how we crave ties to where we came from\, even while we chase adventure. The album’s title track\, while just as imbued with truth\, comes at life decisions with a wink and a bluesy lurch. Everyone had ideas for where that kid from Woodbury might go. But\, “Uncle Glen had the best plan of the bunch\,” Simmons sings\, “strummin’ on the guitar and live your life on a hunch.” \n“That’s the only one that’s a little cheeky\,” Simmons says. “It’s tongue-in-cheek. It’s a blues-rock song. Then everything else goes a completely different direction. I don’t know why\, it just kinda felt like a pivot.” \nTo render the full pivot\, Simmons turned to folks who’ve been part of his musical story tracing almost back to when he first left Woodbury. \nGoffrey Moore (Jonatha Brooke\, Maia Sharp) produced Hunch in his Madison\, Tennessee\, studio\, and he and Simmons invited contributions from lap and pedal steel player Paul Niehaus\, singer/pianist Molly Jewell\, bassists Dave Jacques and Billy Mercer\, and drummers Matthew Crouse and Bryan Owings. \nAll accomplished players who’ve collaborated with country and Americana greats from John Prine to Patty Griffin\, they’ve all played with Simmons on various songs and stages over decades. \nThese well- and long-established personal and musical connections allowed Moore and Simmons to experiment in comfort\, letting songs go where they seemed to want to. The songwriter’s initial intent was to hole up in Moore’s century-old cabin to capture a stripped-down set. But as the recording progressed and friends came in\, Hunch took a more dynamic and textured turn. \n“It was a different way to do it for me\,” Simmons says. “It kinda lent itself to\, like\, ‘OK\, well\, maybe we’ll go big on this one.’ And then all of a sudden\, it presents itself.” \nCall it following intuition. Call it living on a hunch.
