SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special – 9/24 – Afriend / Mark Winters
DESCRIPTION:Afriend is the stage name of Adam Ochs\, a singer\, songwriter\, painter and teacher. Adam has lived in Maryville for ten years\, originally from Miamisburg\, Ohio. The songs are about faith\, relationship\, wildlife and art. \n \nTexas-based rock singer-songwriter Mark Winters is many things; a witty poet\, passionate musician\, entrepreneur\, optimist\, family man\, and a bonafide rocket scientist. He first picked up a guitar to play a song for his wife on their anniversary. That’s when he discovered the joy of connecting with people through music. Mark combines music\, poetry\, a science background\, and love for his community to form his signature sound\, “rock with a positive vibe.” \nHis musical roots are in rock\, blues rock\, and pop\, and John Mayer\, Tom Petty\, and Jason Mraz are significant influences. “My music starts from a place of poetry and creative inspiration\, and I use my ‘rocket-scientist brain’ to find structures that help me explore that initial burst of inspiration and feeling – like writing haikus\, my favorite! My grandmother taught me to express myself through poetry and I’m thankful to her for setting me on this creative and expressive path.” \nMark has a degree in Aerospace\, Aeronautical\, and Astronautical Engineering\, and his math and science background guides his musical explorations. He likes taking complex things such as emotions and expressing them in a way that’s easy to understand. Balancing his right-brained creativity with his analytical left-brain is part of a life-long journey; music is one more place where he can explore this balance.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special – 9/25 – Chris Berardo / March To August
DESCRIPTION:Blue Elan Recording Artist Chris Berardo. “Riding straight out of a tequila sunrise and into the arms of an adoring crowd of barroom regulars\, this band hits all the right notes to apeal to Jackson Browne and Eagles fans everywhere” -Steve Stone The Studio City (CA) Sun \n \nMarch To August: Their sound draws comparisons to acclaimed duos like Gillian Welch & David Rawlings\, Watchhouse\, and Shovels & Rope—artists known for compelling songwriting\, rich vocal harmonies\, and stripped-down acoustic instrumentation. Blending Folk\, Americana\, and Bluegrass with an intimate\, roots-driven style\, their music features thought-provoking\, heartfelt lyrics\, intricate guitar and banjo work\, and a rhythmic foundation powered by bass and stomp box—creating a sound that’s both timeless and deeply personal. \nTheir latest record\, Songs Inspired by Witness\, received strong reviews and debuted as one of the top 50 albums on the Alternative Country and Folk charts. They tour extensively across the US\, bringing their signature storytelling and sound to audiences far and wide.

With the release of her first album under her own name\, “Evie’s Great Adventure\,” the fiddler/vocalist ready to deliver the main course. \nThe new album is flat-out feel-good music delivered with the same heart and soul that’s made Evie a popular performed all across the Southeast. \nMaybe you caught her bands Barefoot Sanctuary or Buffalo Fiasco\, or heard her backing up renowned cellist Dave Eggar\, irreverent singer-songwriter Roger Alan Wade\, or performing at the Big Ears Festival with improvisational great Lonnie Holley\, or maybe you spotted her backing up Foreigner on a short tour. There’s also the possibility that you heard her music on the HBO series “The Outsider” or saw her appearance on “American Ninja Warrior.” \nBorn in Fargo\, N.D. and raised in Minot\, N.D.\, Evie began playing fiddle at six years old in her father’s band Crossroads\, but she was already a stage veteran. She first performed on stage at the age of 3\, blowing a train whistle\, on one of her father’s songs. \n \nIn a musical world where singer-songwriters are a dime a dozen\, you will find in Jon Whitlock a refreshingly unique sound: a combination of gorgeous original melodies and intellectual\, poignant stories that will surprise you and move you. \nOriginally trained as a drummer\, he was drawn not just to the performance side of drumming\, but even more so to the creative side. Traveling the world as a drummer for touring bands\, the vast experiences of life\, love\, and loss inspired his creative side. Eventually he picked up a guitar\, taught himself to play in a style that made sense to his percussive background\, and started writing songs about what makes us human. What emerged is a beautifully melodic and rhythmic finger-picking guitar sound mixed with poetic\, philosophical\, romantic\, and humorous lyrics. Jon has a knack for understanding the human experience; the words he writes\, his gentle demeanor\, and the style of his playing immediately draw you in and make you want more. Constantly working on new songs\, he has a wealth of original material but also enjoys covering unexpected yet recognizable songs from his favorite artists. \n \nRaised on American Roots music in Eastern Tennessee\, Daniel Kimbro is a multi Grammy-nominated musician with 20 years experience performing alongside luminaries including Eric Clapton\, Jerry Douglas\, John Hiatt\, Transatlantic Sessions\, Sarah Jarosz\, Larkin Poe & many others. \nWhile his collaborations are numerous\, his new solo album Carpet In The Kitchen showcases Daniel’s skills as a songwriter\, composer & arranger. Guests on the album include Jerry Douglas\, Mike Baggetta on electric guitar\, & Jordan Perlson on Drumset. \nKnown to International audiences for his work with the Transatlantic Sessions\, Martin Harley\, Harley Kimbro Lewis\, and many others\, Daniel continues to tour throughout the US\, the UK\, and Canada. \n \nMartin Harley has been making music and touring the world for over two decades. His sound has never been more down to earth. Exploring roots\, blues and slide guitar in a style The Guardian referred to as ‘Spellbinding’\, Harley has released eight albums to date\, four recorded on home soil and four across the Atlantic in Texas and Nashville. \nAn album with Grammy nominated Daniel Kimbro and Sam Lewis is on the way for 2022. The three have collaborated live since 2014. “We’ve all jumped of a few rocks together\, physically and mentally\, this record has got scars\, bars and underwater superheroes” 2021 includes some intimate acoustic shows for Martin with a band tour in the autumn. martinharley.com for tours and tickets. \nHis recent nominations include\, AMA instrumentalist of the year\, Best Acoustic Guitarist\, Best Acoustic Blues artist. Notable appearances include Glastonbury Acoustic and Avalon stages\, Beautiful Days\, Royal Albert Hall\, Union Chapel\, Bluebird Nashville\, Tønder Festival\, The Troubadour LA and at home round the fire pit with his two daughters. \n \nSam Lewis isn’t just a musician. He’s a weaver of tales\, capturing the essence of human experience in every note and lyric. Chris Stapleton calls him “a modern Townes Van Zandt\,” with good reason. Lewis’s voice\, often likened to molasses dripping from a Southern porch\, carries a soulful weight that transcends genre. His music is a gumbo of feel-good grooves and vital social commentary. It is a testament to years spent honing his craft on the red dirt roads of the American Southeast.  Read Sam’s biography to learn more about this soulful storyteller weaving tales of humanity. \n \nTexas Tony & The Tornado Ramblers will be bringing some Honky Tonk Outlaw Country to the show!

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special – 9/30 – Zach Russell
DESCRIPTION:Each year\, thousands of people flock to the city of Nashville with hopes of “making it”. Ironically\, it wasn’t until Zach Russell made the decision to leave Music City\, USA that he inked his first record deal with Thirty Tigers. The drive back home may have only been three hours long\, but Russell’s journey back to old haunts in Eastern Tennessee isn’t quite that cut and dry. \nIn the 7 years preceding that trip down I-40\, there were stints as a manager at a shoe store and a karaoke host. He calloused his hands installing irrigation systems and working as a carpenter. He traveled the US and Europe as Tyler Childers’ merchandise manager and got to witness firsthand what it takes to chase down greatness. Through it all\, one thing that remained constant was his belief that he could chase it down as well. \nMusic has always played a pivotal role in Russell’s life. A background in Baptist and Hymnal music as a youth and a taste for hip-hop\, rock\, and country music informed his musical style between 2016 and 2020 as he found his footing. In 2021 the world received its proper introduction to Zach Russell as a fully formed artist with the release The Creek. This five-song EP proved not only to be a landmark release in Russell’s career\, but with its lyrical depth\, soaring instrumental jams and infectious melodies\, it served as proof that this landmark was merely the first of many to come. \nSince moving home and finding clarity\, the past 18 months have been busy for Russell. He spent those months writing music\, touring with The Alex Leach Band\, and delivering a guest appearance on Adeem the Artist critically acclaimed album\, White Trash Revelry. That wave of momentum has culminated to this moment\, and the release of his highly anticipated full-length debut\, Where the Flowers Meet the Dew. \nOnce again joining forces with up-and-coming producer Kyle Crownover (Adeem the Artist)\, this ten-song effort never takes its foot off the gas pedal. Dominant themes of wrestling with mortality\, pondering reincarnation\, and finding that ever elusive feeling of contentment in this life weave gracefully through. \nAs the old saying goes\, “Big hitters take big swings.”\, and Russell’s choice as the first single is as bold a statement as can be made. Coming in at a shade over seven minutes long\, “Born Again” begins as a rockabilly banger\, then midway through\, via a psychedelic segue it morphs into a funky\, groove heavy jam. Russell sings of reincarnation and hints that perhaps every waking moment is\, in fact\, an opportunity to start anew. \nThe first half of the record is filled with traditional waltzes (“I Thought I Was the Trees”\, “Take Me Back to Tennessee”)\, haunting electric folk (“What You Want Comes to You”)\, and 60’s R&B style (“Milk & Honey”) cuts. Its deep\, mellow\, and the lyrics are contemplative. It draws you in while not letting the listener get too comfortable. \nBeginning with the aforementioned rip-roaring lead single\, the back half of the record brings with it an altogether different vibe. Greasy\, distorted guitar licks pepper the back half of Where the Flowers Meet the Dew. “Playing House” fully displays his creative dexterity\, and would be right at home on a post-grunge rock radio station\, circa 1998\, sandwiched between Matchbox 20 and Third Eye Blind numbers. Later\, on “Nothin’ to Haul”\, he boldly calls out the posers and wannabes that fill the Nashville scene.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Big Plate – 10/3 – Cole Chaney
DESCRIPTION:When it comes to his latest album\, In the Shadow of the Mountain\, 25-year-old singer-songwriter Cole Chaney is pretty candid and blunt about who he is and what kind of music he wants to make — the result of which\, this stunning offering from an artist wise beyond his age. \n“There’s a yin to every yang\,” Chaney says. “I want nothing more than for people to be creatively fulfilled\, and to do what they want. But\, for me to preach that? I have to practice it.” \nThat attitude resides at the core of the record\, where the trajectory of the songs seemingly — more so purposely — shoot off in the opposite direction of many of his contemporaries in the Americana\, country and folk music scenes. In truth? Chaney is summoning his rock roots. \n“I’m not concerned with being labeled as ‘country’.“There’s not a lot of music being released right now that is doing anything for me. I made something that I would want to listen to.” \nPointing to his lifelong admiration for 1990s rock — specifically Soundgarden\, Alice in Chains and Stone Temple Pilots — as a vital influence on the sonic landscape of the album\, Chaney aimed to find a melodic balance between that raw and real rock sound and the bluegrass and folk music of his native Kentucky. \n“I wanted to make something that sounded like Ralph Stanley went in and got backed up by Soundgarden\,” Chaney jokes. “I write what I listen to. And whatever I listen to is going to come out in my music.” \nIn the Shadow of the Mountain was captured by famed producer Duane Lundy at his legendary studio in Lexington\, Kentucky. While talking at-length about the possible collaboration\, Lundy spoke of his love for Soundgarden\, Alice in Chains and Stone Temple Pilots. \n“I know plenty of bluegrass guys that could have recorded this for me\,” Chaney says. “But\, I wanted to take that string band and folk sound and bring it to a rock producer\, to bring that big sound out of these acoustic instruments — [Duane] was about to do that.” \nThe album was also co-produced by guitarist Zachary Hamilton\, a close friend of Chaney\, who is also the brother and bandmate of rising Lexington singer-songwriter Abby Hamilton. \n“[Zach] has that ability to fill a room with his guitar\, his voicings\, and all the choices he goes for down the neck of the guitar\,” Chaney says. “When Abby was opening for us\, I got to sit there and watch him play every night. I knew when I was going to do another album\, he needed to be involved in some capacity.” \nHeading into the recording sessions\, Chaney brought along his band\, which included Ella Webster (fiddle)\, Kyle Kleinman (mandolin)\, Joel Murtaugh (upright bass) and James Gooding (drums). Acclaimed Kentucky musician (and former bandmate) Aaron Bibelhauser also makes an appearance. \nWith this pivot in his tone and intent compared to his 2021 debut album\, Mercy\, Chaney sees this current path as more in-tune with what he’s not only wanted to do all along\, but has slowly shifted towards in recent years amid endless touring and performing. \n“I was green [while recording Mercy]. I didn’t really know what I was doing\,” Chaney admits. “And\, by the grace of so many people around me\, we were able to get some really great string band music on [that album].” \nSince Mercy\, Chaney has added a full drum kit to his band and live show\, something that was done to enhance his sound and stage presence — this thunderous beat to accompany the sorrowful songs. \n“If I have drums\, then we’re going to do it all the way\,” Chaney says. “And that unlocked some capabilities for me as a writer to pursue a sound that I don’t think I’ve heard yet.” \nAs of late\, Chaney has returned to his hometown of Catlettsburg\, Kentucky (population: 1\,780). The tiny Appalachian community lies along the shores of the Ohio and Big Sandy rivers\, at the crossroads of the borders of West Virginia\, Ohio and The Bluegrass State. \n“I think where I’m from shows through in everything that I do\,” Chaney says. “And if you want to write songs where that is going to come through\, then I feel I need to be around my roots.” \nFor Chaney\, even though he’s only in his mid-twenties\, his journey has been long and bountiful already. From growing up in rural Appalachia to going to welding school\, only to leave it behind and take a leap of faith when an opportunity to pursue music emerged. \nThat life-changing decision led to Chaney hitting the road and finding work at The Burl\, a storied Lexington music venue. Chaney has come full circle with The Burl\, by selling out the space on multiple occasions to fervent crowds\, including the large outdoor stage. \nWith In the Shadow of the Mountain being the latest milestone for Chaney\, what remains is this driven musician in search of not only himself and his sound\, but also an audience just as hungry — for something new\, something different\, and yet something so familiar. \n“In a lot of ways\, things have gone extremely far. And yet\, so many things have remained the same\,” Chaney reflects. “And that’s been the beauty of the journey.”

SUMMARY:Scruffy Roots Fest - 10/4 - Vaden Landers\, Wyatt Ellis & a Tom Petty Tribute from The Deep Fakes
DESCRIPTION:Kerns Food Hall presents the first-ever Scruffy Roots Fest Saturday evening October 4th at five p.m. on the big stage outdoors with live music from Vaden Landers\, Wyatt Ellis and a Tom Petty Tribute from The Deep Fakes. Doors at 4 p.m. Thanks to Sugarlands Distillery for their support. WDVX is a media sponsor. \n8pm to 9:30pm – Wyatt Ellis\n6:15pm to 7:45pm – The Deep Fakes (tom petty tribute set)\n5pm to 6pm – Vaden landers \nFrom the enchanting landscapes of Eastern Tennessee comes the burgeoning talent of Vaden Landers\, a 30-year-old artist weaving a tapestry of melodies that harken back to the golden era of country music. Vaden’s journey began as a train-hopping troubadour and street-busker\, crafting songs that resonate with the very soul of Americana. \nAffectionately dubbed “The Yodeling Country Bluesman\,” Vaden has etched his name into the vibrant streets of Asheville\, North Carolina. His authenticity shines as a torchbearer of the classic country tradition\, infused with a contemporary spark. \nWith an eclectic fusion of honky-tonk\, rockabilly\, folk\, blues\, ragtime\, jazz\, western swing\, and old-time Appalachian influences\, Vaden Landers emerges as a pioneer breathing new life into the traditional country music scene. His performances at various music festivals\, including the illustrious WoodyFest and the renowned Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion\, have left audiences enraptured. \nAs Vaden Landers takes the stage\, he invites you to embark on an enthralling journey – one that transcends time and genre. \n \nWyatt Ellis has accomplished more by age 16 than many musicians do in a lifetime. Hailing from the foothills of the Smoky Mountains in East Tennessee\, he’s quickly emerging as one of bluegrass music’s brightest young stars. With virtuosic mandolin playing\, heartfelt vocals\, and original songwriting\, Wyatt blends the deep traditions of bluegrass with a fresh\, youthful energy. Backed by a powerhouse band of Appalachia’s finest young musicians\, Wyatt delivers high-octane performances that range from the Grand Ole Opry to major festivals like MerleFest and Gray Fox. His band’s signature single-mic setup showcases their tight harmonies\, high-lonesome vocals\, and blistering solos\, creating a sound steeped in tradition yet driven by the future. Wyatt’s breakout year included a debut at the Newport Folk Festival\, chart-topping original instrumentals from his debut album\, and becoming one of the youngest regular performers in Grand Ole Opry history. His authentic Appalachian songwriting and seasoned stage presence have quickly set him apart as a once-in-a-generation talent with a deep respect for bluegrass music’s heritage. 2024’s IBMA Momentum Instrumentalist of the Year and twice nominated for IBMA’s New Artist of the Year\, Wyatt has collaborated with legends like Peter Rowan\, Marty Stuart\, and the late Bobby Osborne. His January 2025 release\, Winds of Rowan County\, a duet with Rowan\, celebrated bluegrass roots while symbolically passing the torch. Wyatt’s lead and harmony mandolin solo on Bobby Osborne’s final recording of “Rocky Top\,” along with their co-written instrumental “Fern Branch\,” were both featured on Osborne’s posthumous album\, a tribute to Wyatt’s connection to his hero and mentor. With a debut vocal album of all-new original songs on the way\, Wyatt Ellis stands poised at the forefront of bluegrass\, honoring the legacy of the genre while boldly pushing it forward into a new era. \n \nFrom rock ‘n roll to new wave\, The Deep Fakes play spot on versions of our favorite music of the cassette and vinyl era. Whether it’s a chart topping hit or a deep cut\, every effort is made to accurately capture and reproduce the original studio release. \n  \n \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special - 10/6 - Pete Denahy
DESCRIPTION:Pete Denahy knew when he was 11 years old he wanted to be a country singer. He taught himself guitar\, started writing songs and at 13 years old saw Slim Dusty in concert for the first time. Twelve years later he was in Slim’s band playing fiddle and doing a comedy spot on the show.\nWhile he has written some ridiculous comedy songs\, he is no stranger to writing a heart wrencher\, but he is fully aware that his songs about insects and toilet paper hold special places in the hearts of his fans.\nHis latest record “She Loves Me To The Moon” is not a comedy release but a traditional country album featuring his own fiddle playing\, twangy guitars and wailing pedal steel. Produced by Simon Johnson at Hillbilly Hut Studio\, it includes fine playing by some of Australia’s best and a collection of new tracks penned with help from the Wolfe Brothers\, Mike Carr\, Bill Whyte and Evan Murphy.\nPete is a five time Golden Guitar winner and is very happy to have won three of those for his fiddle playing – an instrument that has kept him in work for many years. As well as working as a side man and guest artist for Slim\, he has done the same for Sara Storer\, Troy Cassar-Daley and Lee Kernaghan.\nPete takes two trips a year to Japan with Australian music fans to explore the bluegrass and country scene there.

SUMMARY:WDVX Summer Nights - 10/8 - Mic Harrison and the High Score / Trisha Gene Brady
DESCRIPTION:I’d rather see Mic Harrison and the High Score perform than just about any band on the planet. \nThat’s not just because Mic and the guys have a couple of road cases full of great songs or they’re journeyman musicians who’ve been a part of some of the best bands to come out of the South. It’s because every time I go to a Mic Harrison and the High Score show\, I know I’m going to walk in and see guys who look like they’re having so much fun on stage that it can’t help but spill out into the audience. I know I’m going to walk out at the end the night feeling better about the world with great rock ‘n’ roll and honky tonk songs playing over and over in my head. \nLead singer and rhythm guitarist Mic Harrison\, lead guitarist Robbie Trosper\, bassist Vance Hillard\, guitarist Kevin Abernathy and drummer Don Coffey\, Jr.\, have a chemistry that can only come from long term friendships and shared experiences. Harrison\, who started his young adulthood working in a saw mill in Bradford\, Tenn.\, a town so small it barely shows up on the map between Memphis and Jackson. He moved to Knoxville in the 1990s to become co-lead singer-songwriter (with Scott Miller) in The V-Roys\, a band that defined “Americana” before it was genre. After that group split\, he teamed with Trosper in the short-lived favorites The Faults and\, later\, teamed with Coffey in the now legendary power pop act Superdrag. When Superdrag ended\, Harrison enlisted established Knoxville rock act The High Score to back up a tour and the chemistry was so good that the partnership never ended. \nIn the past 12 years or so\, Mic and the guys have traveled the country\, performing at festivals from Bonnaroo to Easyriders Rodeos\, headlining bills from concert halls to the stickiest bars\, opening shows for everyone from Billy Joe Shaver to Huey Lewis and the News to ZZ Top\, and recording a terrific single with classic country singer Con Hunley. \nI’ve been lucky enough to experience Mic Harrison and the High Score perform about 50 times. I expect to see them at least 50 more. In the world today\, you need something that’s guaranteed to make you feel good that won’t hurt you – aside from a little soreness from swaying and dancing. \nI consider Mic Harrison and the High Score mental health food. \n– Wayne Bledsoe \n \nWith her former band TGB followed a rigorous road schedule and had many adventures!! Trisha Gene Brady is a roots musician from Knoxville\, TN known best for her seven year run as the female vocalist (guitar\, mandolin\, percussion) of the nationally touring act\, The Black Lillies. Her split from the well known Americana outfit seems to be an open door to the next step in her career.\nShe has been featured in publications including Rolling Stone\, Vanity Fair\, Billboard\, Wall Street Journal\, Consequence of Sound\, Garden & Gun\, Huffington Post\, Relix Magazine\, USA Today\, PASTE Magazine\, No Depression & Country Weekly\, NPR’s Mountain Stage (twice) and five separate PBS concert specials\, a GAC featurette\, Texas Music Scene and a CMT television episode airing nationally.\nTrisha Gene is one of the only independent artists invited to play the Grand Ole Opry more than thirty times (debuted June\, 2011).\nShe has performed at festivals including Bonnaroo Music + Arts\, SXSW\, Americana Music Association’s Americana Fest\, 30-A Songwriter’s Festival\, Country Music Association’s CMA Festival & Fan Fair\, Rochester International Jazz Festival\, Pickathon\, Strawberry Music Festival\, Four Corners Folk Festival\, MerleFest\, Old Settler’s Festival\, The Luck Reunion\, and more.

SUMMARY:Kidstuff Live - 10/11 - Miss Lynn
DESCRIPTION:Join your host Sarah Pirkle every 2nd Saturday at 10:00 AM for a toe-tapping\, family-friendly live music performance made just for kids—and their grownups who love them! From catchy tunes to musical surprises. This day Miss Lynn will be joining us! \nSome Very Good Words to Describe Miss Lynn: \nIDEALISTIC: On the day 9-year old Lynn Hickernell was selected as captain of a gym class kickball team\, she knew just what she would do: the first members chosen for her team would be the classmates who\, like her\, were usually picked last. As the teams assembled\, she ignored the quizzical facial expressions and continued to select smaller\, less-coordinated 4th graders\, instead of the stronger\, faster students who quickly made up the opposing team. She knew that her team might not be obvious victors\, but if they worked together\, they could show the other team what they could do–which turned out to be lose. Badly. By a score of approximately 25 to 0. And while it wasn’t much fun to lose that spring morning\, many years later it made a good story. \nUNPRETENTIOUS: Miss Lynn knows we are all still learning (she even wrote a song about it)\, so she’s not worried about telling stories to try and make herself look cool. The fact that she thinks being cool is overrated is one of the driving forces behind the music she makes and The Good Words Podcast. \nZEALOUS: She loves so many things! Music! Doughnuts! The color yellow! And WORDS! She loves words so much that she created a whole podcast about them. You can find The Good Words Podcast on iTunes\, on the Good Words Podcast Website\, or many other podcast providers. \nTRANSIENT: Even though she’s pretty down to earth\, Miss Lynn also spends a lot of time traveling\, making concerts with kids and adults all over and working on The Good Words Podcast. You can find some of the places she’ll be by looking at the calendar. \nAMBIVALENT: Miss Lynn has very mixed feelings about social media in general and her involvement in particular\, but if you are so inclined\, you can find her on Facebook\, Instagram\, and Twitter. \nUBIQUITOUS: But even though she can only be in one physical location at a time\, you can find her all over the Internet! In addition to all the places mentioned above\, find her music on iTunes\, and CD Baby! \n \n

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special – 10/11 – Rebecca Porter / Robby Hecht
DESCRIPTION:Born in Guam and raised in the Shenandoah Valley\, Rebecca Porter blends soulful melodies and fearless lyrics with her honey-smooth voice to create her own brand of Appalachian honky tonk. Her 2023 EP\, Queen of the Local\, earned national acclaim and led to recognition in Rissi Palmer’s Color Me Country Class of 2024\, features on Ed Helms’ Good Country\, and a debut on NPR’s Mountain Stage. Known for electrifying live performances\, Porter captivates audiences with her emotional intensity and grit. Porter’s personal and raw storytelling continues to push boundaries\, projecting a cinematic soundscape that balances traditional country’s rugged spirit with an unapologetic journey of perseverance. \n \nRobby Hecht has been captivating audiences as a touring singer-songwriter for over two decades\, combining quietly impactful songwriting reminiscent of Tom Waits or Jim Croce with the graceful vocal resonance of James Taylor. With a remarkable blend of insightful lyricism\, memorable melodies\, and a voice that carries both strength and tenderness\, his music resonates with audiences from all walks of life. \nRobby’s dedication to the craft and collaborative spirit have solidified his reputation as a versatile and respected artist within the industry. He garnered recognition as a songwriter’s songwriter early in his career\, winning a number of revered performing songwriter contests and touring across the US and Europe. His music has been the soundtrack for countless journeys\, amassing over 25 million streams to date. And with more than 60 songs recorded by other artists\, as well as numerous contributions as a featured vocalist\, Robby has added his distinct touch to the work of fellow musicians\, reaching music lovers through the voices of others. \nBeyond his musical endeavors\, Robby is a passionate advocate for mental health awareness. Openly discussing his own journey with bipolar disorder\, he shines a light on these issues\, breaking the stigma and offering support and inspiration to those who may be facing similar struggles. \nRobby’s highly anticipated album\, Not a Number\, is a powerful reflection on the evocative and turbulent journey of the past few years. Featuring twelve introspective tracks\, each with the potential to become a personal favorite\, the album weaves together themes of divorce\, emotional recovery\, nostalgia\, the unity of humanity\, and the profound significance of individual experiences. It is a musical tapestry that resonates deeply with listeners\, meeting them wherever they may be on their own life’s path. \nNot a Number was produced by veteran singer-songwriter and sought after guitarist Anthony da Costa\, who also contributed much of the arranging and instrumentation on the album. The recording process spanned nearly two years\, initially involving remote performances exchanged during isolation until Anthony and Robby were able to complete the project together in person. The album features notable guest vocal performances by acclaimed artists from Nashville and beyond including Caroline Spence\, Jess Nolan\, Jill Andrews\, Katie Pruitt\, Lydia Luce\, The Sea The Sea\, Ruth Moody\, and Trousdale. \nRobby Hecht’s music is a testament to the power of storytelling and the ability of songs to touch our souls. His insights and captivating melodies create a truly unforgettable musical experience\, inviting you to embark on a contemplative journey through the landscapes of the heart and mind.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special – 10/18 – Elise Witt / Tim Chandler
DESCRIPTION:Elise Witt was born in Switzerland\, raised in North Carolina\, and since 1977 has made her home in Atlanta. She speaks fluent Italian\, French\, German\, Spanish\, and English and sings in over a dozen languages. Her passion for music and languages has led her to take her Global\, Local & Homemade Songs™ across the United States and around the globe. \nAmong her ancestors\, Elise claims “Wedding March” composer Felix Mendelssohn and his grandfather\, Jewish philosopher Moses Mendelssohn; Protestant cow farmers from northern Germany; Russian chemists; Polish intellectuals; French Bordeaux wine growers; a British painter; and a great great aunt from Cuba. \n \nGood songwriting matters to all of us whether we know it or not. It tells the truth in a way that keeps us all moving towards something better. When songs become laundry lists and trend chasers\, they become nothing and so do we. \nTim Chandler is a songwriter dedicated to telling that kind of truth in song in an out of the box way. Combining his influences of bluegrass\, country\, and folk\, his music is drawn from life in work\, family\, and frustrations with songs that don’t say anything. \nGrowing up a preacher’s son in Western Kentucky\, Tim’s first exposure to music came through the traditional hymns that made up every service. Now\, his influences range all over the board\, drawn from the places and people he has worked with\, roamed with\, and written with. From West Coast cover bands to Rocky Mountain forestry crews\, swampy Florida factory floors to construction sites in Alabama. Now\, he wants to share those stories with you. \nTim currently shares his music on a regular basis and has played everywhere from Florida to California to New Jersey – with multiple features on local radio shows and music festivals – including the award winning “Blue Plate Special” on WDVX. He has a whole catalog of songs to his name and now his self-titled record is available to purchase or stream. You can keep up with him and his bandmates on Facebook\, Instagram or wherever you stream music.
