SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special - 9/18 - Steve Dawson / Lizzie & The Makers
DESCRIPTION:Chicago Folk / Americana singer / songwriter\, Steve Dawson\, has been called “one of the most underrated songwriters in American music\,” who writes\, “graceful\, poetic songs akin to a volume of great short stories in their precise\, exacting wordplay and soulful heartache.” Dawson has released six albums with his long-time band\, Dolly Varden\, and six solo albums\, including 2021’s “At The Bottom Of A Canyon In The Branches Of A Tree\,” and the 2024’s\, “Ghosts\,” both on Pravda Records. \nOriginally from San Diego\, California\, he spent his teen years in Hailey\, Idaho\, where he learned guitar and started writing songs. After a few years at the Berklee School of Music in Boston\, Dawson moved to Chicago and formed the band\, Stump The Host\, with his future wife\, artist and singer\, Diane Christiansen. Dawson also teaches songwriting at the legendary Old Town School of Folk Music and co-wrote a book on songwriting and the creative process with Mark Caro called\, “Take It To The Bridge: Unlocking The Great Songs Inside You.” \n \nLizzie & The Makers’ sophomore studio album\, Dear Onda Wahl\, embroiders their potent Southern-tinged rock with art-rock\, dream-pop\, and ethereal elements to spawn something all their own. It’s one of those rare records that combines single-minded artistry with broad commercial appeal. \n \n  \nCreated around the dusky yet soaring timbre of force-of-nature frontwoman Lizzie Edwards\, Dear Onda Wahl was produced by Grammy winner Mario McNulty (David Bowie\, Prince) and Cure guitarist Reeves Gabrels (Tin Machine\, Bowie). Their influence\, alongside the textured six-string and pedal-steel expressions of Edwards’ writing partner (and Gabrels protégé) Greg McMullen\, ensure an intriguingly adventurous\, hugely dynamic – and occasionally otherworldly – take on the traditional. \nDefying her constant comparisons to Janis Joplin\, the classically-trained Edwards\, 5-time official showcasing artist at SXSW\, former Pleasantville Music Festival MainStage performer\, summons a heartfelt\, nuanced mezzo-soprano shaped by Memphis soul legend Ann Peebles\, Heart’s Wilson sisters\, and jazz icon Billie Holiday. She’s assertive\, yet vulnerable; defiant\, yet proudly flawed.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special - 9/19 - Anders Thomsen / Cut Throat Finches
DESCRIPTION:Anders Thomsen has deep roots. This midwestern boy grew up on the music that makes America. The Twang of the Opry on a Saturday night\, the Rock n Roll on the stereos in the Chevys and the Fords and the Blues and Soul spilling out of the nightclubs he snuck into. He heard all that and made it his own. \nHe picked up the heartbreak and the joy of the blues\, and matched it with the lonesome\, lovelorn hillbilly waltz and powered it all with those rock and roll V-8s. \nHe got an early start\, playing in bars and nightclubs before he was old enough to drive\, sometimes even with a note from his mother. He sang\, played guitar\, played bass and even played the washtub. Anything to get him on stage to learn the craft. \n \nCut Throat Finches: An ironic name for a tiny bird\, with a giant Texas sound. Currently hold title of FWTX Mag’s “Best Live Band in Ft Worth TX” (Editors Choice). This Americana-ish rock band shares an affection for indie/alt rock royalty and have been described as “what you would get if you dropped a big British band right in the heart of Texas”. Their studio writing blends together like flavors in a hand crafted cocktail that beg for the next long drink. Cut Throat Finches lure in their crowd with infectious melodies and personality to spare. \nSinger-songwriter Sean Russell\, a proud resident and advocate of the Fort Worth Texas music scene\, formed the band mid-2015 with a group of much-lauded players from the area (Taylor Tatsch- guitar / Eric Webb- keys / Draya Ruse- Drums/ Rob Paine- bass ).This band receives a healthy dose of radio and press being recognized for their writing and performing\, being nominated over the past three albums\, for album of the year\, rock band of the year\, and more. CTF just released their 4th studio album\, “Unraveled” and are hitting the road through summer and fall of 2024 to promote from Colorado to Tennessee.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Big Plate - 9/20 - Po Ramblin Boys
DESCRIPTION:At a time when most people feel constantly distracted by technology and barraged by the news\, authenticity and straightforward honesty are paramount. There’s something about the music of The Po’ Ramblin’ Boys that cuts right through the noise of the world and speaks plainly to the soul. Formed ten years ago in the Smoky Mountains in 2014\, The Po’ Ramblin’ Boys are at once exactly what you would expect and not at all what you would expect from a tattooed East Tennessee Bluegrass outfit. But they take pride in being ambassadors of their genre\, and the group has brought their music from rural bluegrass festival stages to the rock clubs of Europe\, with stunning results.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special - 9/21 - The Freeway Jubilee / Haley Richardson
DESCRIPTION:The music and soundscape of The Freeway Jubilee are built around the songwriting and blood harmonies of twin brothers\, Adam and Jonathan Clayton. Both brothers have been involved in the regional music scene in various projects over the years. Recently\, the group has enlisted the steady playing of local bassist\, Phillip Brock. He provides a fresh yet strong foundation for the songs and complements the sound with a steady groove. The trio is finding their voices again\, placing their songwriting and message at the forefront of their art. Their sound takes a unique approach\, helmed by everyone’s willingness to progress with the vibe of the song. \nThe Freeway Jubilee takes a multi-instrumental approach to their live shows\, allowing for a fluid switch between instruments and singers. This adds an interesting depth and dynamic to the sound. The group blends rock\, jazz\, gospel\, country\, and bluegrass with both acoustic and electric instruments\, setting off their unique and close blood harmonies. Sibling vocal harmony is known for being special\, and it’s definitely a highlight for the twin brothers. \nBuilding upon their songwriting cornerstone\, the band also brings virtuosic prowess to each instrument played. The goal is to raise the roof and give each note and song all they have. The band looks ahead and continues progressing as musicians and writers\, working daily on their songs and sound. This dedication has become the new normal as we push ourselves to bring our best as artists and as local folks in the community. \n \nHaley Richardson is a virtuosic musician\, whose talents extend to the fields of both classical and Irish traditional music. With her highly ornamented Sligo style perfected under the tutelage of fiddler Brian Conway\, Haley has garnered a number of prestigious awards and honors\, including multiple championships at the Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann (All Ireland) in Ireland\, numerous MidAtlantic Championships\, and the coveted Junior (2015) and Senior (2018) Fiddler Of Dooney awards. \n\nA year after asking to learn the violin at age two\, Haley began Suzuki violin lessons. Before her 5th birthday\, she fell in love with Irish music inspired by a live performance of fiddler Kevin Burke. She began learning fiddle tunes from Kevin’s How to Play Celtic Fiddle DVD and by playing along to his CD while riding in the car. Haley won her first MidAtlantic under twelve Irish fiddle competition at just six years old and by April 2017\, Haley is a 9X MidAtlantic Regional fiddle champion. She is a multiple time All Ireland champion in both solo fiddle and fiddle slow airs and an All Ireland place winner in trio competition. \nWhether performing in a solo capacity or in an ensemble\, Haley brings a rare dynamism and energy to her music\, which is informed by her thorough knowledge of the form\, her mastery of her instrument\, and the absolutely trailblazing and show-stopping technique and emotion evident in every note she plays. She has performed with many of the most well-known names in Irish music including The Chieftains\, Altan\, Dervish\, Mick Moloney\, Pride of New York\, Liz Carroll with Cherish the Ladies\, John Whelan\, Paddy Keenan\, The Máirtín de Cógáin Project. Haley has been a member of Green Fields of American and The John Whelan Band. She was the band fiddler for the Studio2Stage Irish dance production\, That’s Dancing\, from 2014-2017.\nJohn Whelan mentored\, recorded\, and produced Haley’s (accompanied by brother\, Dylan) debut CD\, Heart on a String\, in March 2015. In March 2017\, Haley released a CD she produced entitled Music for Mercy\, a compilation CD featuring donated tracks from many of the best Irish musicians under 21 years old from around the world. All proceeds from that CD benefit the Mercy Centre in Bangkok\, Thailand. In May 2019\, Haley teamed up with musical genious and multi-instrumentalist\, Quinn Bachand\, to release their debut duo recording\, When the Wind Blows High and Clear. \nDuring the pandemic\, Haley created a music collaboration series entitled #COVIDuets (check them out on her Facebook page) and recorded an EP with talented electronic music producer\, Zac Klingenberg\, entitled Enigma (click the link to listen on Spotify). \nHaley is currently the fiddler for the 25th Anniversary tour of the Grammy Award winning production\, “Riverdance”\, appeared in the movie/DVD recording of the 25th Anniversary show recorded at the 3Arena in Dublin\, and was invited by Riverdance composer\, Bill Whelan\, to record on the Riverdance 25th Anniversary Album released December 2019. \n \n

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special - 9/25 - Kyle Keller / Jordan Foley
DESCRIPTION:Kyle Keller is the Americana/folk artist you wish you had discovered sooner. His rolling melodies and potent lyrics will leave you questioning every moment since you last heard his growling bass vocals. Kyle’s self-described “sad songs” are raw\, unfiltered\, and distinctly relatable. His ability to take you on a discovery of emotion through story-telling is entirely unrivaled. \n \nJordan Foley is a singer-songwriter based in Orlando\, FL. His music is best described by Creative Loafing Tampa Bay as “a special brand of Americana for admirers of bands like American Aquarium\, Lucero and Ryan Bingham.” \nJordan released his debut album\, Give to Get a Day\, on all music streaming services in April 2018. Give to Get a Day is a seven-track album that has gained momentum through Jordan’s first two single releases\, “See You Letter” (over 2\,900 streams)\, “Clouds” (over 1\,500 streams) and the title track “Give to Get a Day” (over 1\,100 streams). \nIn 2019\, Jordan formed his own band called Jordan Foley & The Wheelhouse\, and they have been taking Florida by storm. This July\, they hit the road for a tour throughout the major Florida cities\, opening for the likes of Jacksonville native Josh Card at 1904 Music Hall in Jacksonville and headlining shows in Orlando\, Gainesville and St. Petersburg. In August\, the band also opened for Austin Lucas & The Bold Party in both Orlando and Tampa. \nJordan has been nominated for Orlando Weekly’s Best Singer-songwriter 2017 and 2019 and Best Folk Act 2018-19. Orlando Weekly’s Bao Le-Huu describes Jordan as “a sound and voice that’s effectively situated between a little twang and a lot of soul. He doesn’t try too hard because he doesn’t need to. Confident in the pocket and the natural power of his expression\, Foley’s probably one of the more finished and articulated young examples to emerge in the local Americana scene lately.” On Jordan Foley & The Wheelhouse\, Le-Huu says “seeing [his voice] flanked and given full wing by a five-piece ensemble is a splendor. Together\, they make for a country-rock outfit that’s lush\, articulated and muscular.”

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special - 9/26 - Robert Vincent / Effron White & Lauren Blaine
DESCRIPTION:Change is in the air for award-winning artist Robert Vincent. The Liverpool singer/songwriter will release his fourth studio album in 2023 and his music is riding the winds of change with Vincent revealing “I’m learning how to lower my barriers and have made a more personal album than ever before.” \n \nEffron White is an Arkansas born and raised\, award winning singer/songwriter now residing in Pineview\, TN. \nWhen you hear Effron White\, you are immediately struck by the uniqueness of his songs and their delivery. His gravelly vocal brings to mind the likes of Tom Waits\, John Prine\, or Bob Dylan; yet\, there’s a personal earthiness that drives the emotional truth of his songs right into your heart. \nAs a songwriter\, Effron draws his influences from those legends of the past who are looked upon as poets as much as songwriters; Bob Dylan\, Townes Van Zandt\, John Prine\, and Guy Clark. \nCurrently\, he performs nationwide with his duo partner\, Lauren Blaine\, as “EFFRON WHITE w/ Lauren Blaine”. Lauren is an accomplished writer and performer in her own right\, and shares writing credits on a few songs on the new album. She hails from Los Angeles\, CA\, via her hometown of Stayton\, Oregon. Like Effron she is a transplant to the Nashville area music scene\, having boomeranged back and forth from LA to Nashville since the early 90s. \nTogether\, they bring a unique sound to their brand of acoustic\, Americana music. \nEffron’s skills as a singer/songwriter have resulted in nationwide recognition. In 2004\, Effron won the coveted “New Folk” Award at the prestigious Kerrville Folk Festival. He has also been honored as a Northwest Arkansas Music Award’s Hall of Fame Artist\, as a result of having been voted Best Singer-Songwriter in three previous years. In 2010\, he was featured in American Songwriter Magazine’s Lyric Spotlight for his song\, “Long Haul”\, a story song about a down and out trucker. SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special - 9/28 - Teni Rane / Gary Gilleran
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by the stories of everyday life\, Teni Rane is a folk-country singer-songwriter with a vintage vocal edge and a knack for capturing ordinary scenes in a way that is at once specific and widely relatable. Comfortable in everything from overalls to full-body sequins\, Rane isn’t afraid to explore musical territory and synthesizes vocal and sonic influences into her own brand of country-infused\, Americana-folk-pop with a jazzy vocal lean that feels simultaneously familiar and brand new. \n2024 sees her offer her first full length album to the world. Releasing in early August\, listeners will find familiar a few of the tunes that were leading singles for the album in 2023\, including the title track\, “Goldenrod.” Taking shape at a time in Rane’s life when everything seemed to be up for re-negotiation\, the arc of the album focuses on what it means to allow change to influence a life without eradicating the individual. Inspired by the shoulder season “as the summer fades into fall\,” each track has a reflective bent that calls attention to the lessons\, both cruel and kind\, that are learned simply by looking around. \nLyrically lead\, each track on “Goldenrod” builds on the backbone of Rane’s acoustic guitar. The sonic landscape of the album boldly leans into cinematic\, orchestral cello sweeps and gritty electric guitars while maintaining a balanced ability to tap back into intentionally crafted solo cello work and specifically placed acoustic guitar melodies. The body of work displays a strong cohesion of vision as well as an ability to sonically craft for each song’s storyline. \n“Goldenrod” came to life in Bristol\, VA at Classic Recording Studio with GRAMMY nominated Mike Stephenson engineering and co-producing alongside Rane. Album credits include GRAMMY nominees Dave Eggar (cello\, piano) and Phil Faconti (acoustic\, electric\, baritone\, classical guitars and ukulele)\, past collaborator Roger Gustafsson (bass\, steel guitar)\, and Rane’s own partner Jonathan Shumaker (bass). \nRane grew up in and around a community of Chattanooga musicians who helped nurture in her an early love for musical expression. Her vocals carry power and finesse rolled together with perfect balance to evoke the emotional feel and imagery of her lyrics. As a child she was often found belting out lyrics in the back seat of a minivan on the way to just about anywhere. That six CD changer exposed her to the writing of Nanci Griffith\, Carol King\, Beth Woods\, John Prine\, The Eagles\, Fleetwood Mac\, Pierce Pettis\, Buddy Mondlock\, Cosy Sheridan and many other greats. The resulting flavor of her original work is an eclectic mix influenced by the earliest writing she encountered as well as by the contemporary music scene. \nPerforming for nearly 15 years prior\, her recording journey began in 2020 with the release of her first EP\, “Heart in Tennessee”\, which was heralded by Americana Highways as “the mesmerizing sound of an burgeoning and singular talent who is prodigiously steeped in the ability to express herself in a fresh and original manner.” In the summer of 2022 she took up a musical residency at Kneippbyn Resort Visby on the beautiful Swedish island Gotland in the Baltic Sea. During that time she connected with many talented musicians on the island and created the space to work with Sandkvie Studios to record 4 singles that were released over the course of fall 2022. The first of the quartet\, titled “Meet Me in Stockholm” is a lightly bilingual invitation from a homesick Rane to her best friend to come help fill the lonely hours. The additional tracks focus on the winter and holiday season with inviting titles “Cozy Inside”\, “Rosemary & Evergreen”\, and “Tennessee Snow”. The collection of songs allowed for continued exploration and shared the “exquisite nature of her songs\, their understated honesty\, their deftness and delicacy\, their combination of musical elegance and lyrical eloquence.” (The Big Takeover). These songs all have planned homes on future projects and currently stand alone as singles in Rane’s digital catalog. \nTeni thrives in listening room and house concert settings where she feels the most connected to the audience through the conversation and story lines of her music. She also loves playing in parks\, botanical gardens\, and really any outdoor venue. When playing live\, she is often accompanied by her partner and spouse\, Jonathan Shumaker\, on the bass. \n \nGary Gilleran also joins us this day.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Big Plate - 10/4 - Colby T Helms & The Va Creepers
DESCRIPTION:Colby T Helms & The Va Creepers: \nThe Blue Ridge Mountains wind through eight states over a stretch of 615 miles. In Virginia\, they overlook Franklin County south of Roanoke. Back in the day\, bootleggers would refer to the area as “The Moonshine Capital of the World” due to its perfect placement to export contraband. These days\, the textile mills of Rocky Mount and other once cozy-towns have shut down\, leaving minimal opportunity and a lot of hopelessness. At the bottom of the Southwest Virginia foothills half-a-mile from the nearest neighbor\, Colby Helms resides in an “underground house” built by his late father. He hunts and takes care of his mom. He also pens the kind of raw and real country music that cuts to the bone. After signing to Photo Finish Records\, he introduces himself with a series of 2023 singles and his forthcoming debut album. \n“I want to show what it’s like to grow up in a rural\, impoverished area\,” he says. “A lot of these old little towns in Virginia and North Carolina used to be thriving\, and now they’re nothing. There are a lot of people on welfare who can’t hardly do anything besides struggle to survive. There’s addiction. There’s pain. Sonically\, I’m drawing from all of the classic Appalachian musicians. I believe a lot of the old music is too good to be lost. I’m trying to be a time capsule and hold this true feeling and carry it with me. In my music\, I’m telling a story about people who came from nothing—like my dad and me—and made something out of it.” \nColby’s mother and father became parents later in life. Mom worked as a secretary\, while dad was a handyman and “the go-to guy for anyone around here for when something went wrong.” At the same time\, pops loved to sing classics from yesteryear to his boy and constantly play the Juice Harp. “He played that thing so much he had false teeth\,” recalls Colby. After achieving a Civil Engineering Degree during the energy crisis of the seventies\, dad chose to build a sustainable home underground. Made from different types of wood and rocks from the mountains\, it evoked a certain fairytale magic. At 12-years-old\, Colby endured the loss of his father due to cancer. Beset by sadness and loneliness\, he turned to music. He taught himself guitar\, banjo\, and mandolin by watching local performers and YouTube videos. He amassed a growing record collection\, combing through the stacks at flea markets and browsing eBay. Under the influence of the forefathers of country\, he listened to dusty vinyl from Bill Monroe & His Blue Grass Boys\, Bob Willis & His Texas Playboys\, and Jimmie Rodgers in addition to embracing modern artists. \nAlong the way\, he carefully developed a signature style of his own. \n“This is a vision I’ve had since I was in early high school\,” he goes on. “I really got into the history of the genre. I wish I had earlier\, because I could’ve talked to my dad about it. The music tells part of my life and hopefully shows listeners a part of the world they haven’t seen before.” \nJoined by his band The Virginia Creepers\, he cut his teeth with countless gigs around the area. He also shared a series of arresting D.I.Y. performance videos on YouTube\, including “Smoke and Flames.” With starkly honest songwriting and a sharp angular twang to his vocals\, he struck a dynamic balance between country storytelling\, blue grass energy\, and blues power. He caught the attention of Photo Finish Records and inked a deal with the label in 2023. \nNow\, he’s shining a light on a very special part of America and offering up hope. \n“When you listen to me\, I hope you feel like you’re not alone and you have a chance to fulfill your purpose\,” he leaves off. “Everyone deserves to know this. I also want you to know Appalachia is not just a dead-end place full of dead-end people. There is still growth happening here. I’m trying to give you a taste of our way of life.”

SUMMARY:WDVX Summer Nights - 10/9 - The Tim O’Brien Band / The Songs from the Road Band
DESCRIPTION:Born in Wheeling\, West Virginia in 1954\, Grammy winning singer songwriter and multi- instrumentalist Tim O’Brien grew up singing in church and in school. After seeing Doc Watson on TV\, he became a lifelong devotee of old time and bluegrass music. Tim started touring nationally in 1978 with Colorado bluegrass band Hot Rize. His songs “Walk the Way the Wind Blows” and “Untold Stories” were bluegrass hits for Hot Rize\, and country hits for Kathy Mattea. Soon more artists like Nickel Creek\, Garth Brooks\, and The Dixie Chicks covered his songs. Over the years\, Tim has collaborated with his sister Mollie O’Brien\, songwriter Darrell Scott\, and noted old-time musician Dirk Powell\, as well as with Steve Earle\, Mark Knopfler\, Dan Auerbach and Sturgill Simpson. \nLiving in Nashville since 1996\, O’Brien’s skills on guitar\, mandolin\, fiddle\, and banjo make him an in-demand session player. He tours throughout the US and abroad\, most often with his wife Jan Fabricius on mandolin and vocals. A voracious reader who loves to cook\, he has two sons\, Jackson (born 1982) and Joel (born 1990). The International Bluegrass Music Association awarded him song of the year in 2006 and named him best male vocalist in 1993 and 2006. He was inducted into the West Virginia Music Hall of Fame in 2013 and into the Colorado Music Hall of Fame in 2022. \nO’Brien’s latest release\, 2021’s “He Walked On”\, weaves historical and socially conscious themes through songs about ordinary and not so ordinary people just trying to “keep it between the ditches”. Other notable O’Brien recordings include the bluegrass Dylan covers of “Red on Blonde”\, the Celtic-Appalachian fusion of “The Crossing”\, and the Grammy winning folk of “Fiddler’s Green”. His duet recording “Real Time” with Darrell Scott is a cult favorite\, and he won a bluegrass Grammy as part of “The Earls of Leicester”. His 2017 release “Where the River Meets the Road” paid tribute to the music of his native West Virginia. A new release of original material “Cup of Sugar” drops June 16. \n \nSongs From The Road Band is an Asheville\, North Carolina based bluegrass supergroup featuring Mark Schimick (mandolin)\, Charles Humphrey III (bass)\, Sam Wharton (guitar)\, James Schlender (fiddle)\, and Gabe Epstein (banjo). The band takes flight with virtuosic picking\, singing\, and grammy award winning songwriting. Several of their most recent singles have gone to the top of the Bluegrass Today Grassicana chart. They have 6 studio albums available at all musical outlets. \n \n  \nWDVX Summer Nights supported by ORNL Federal Credit Union and Yee Haw Brewing Company.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special - 10/10 - Brian Revels / Sara Jean Kelley
DESCRIPTION:A river beneath a river with an edgy sense of humor\, Sara Jean Kelley is an explorer\, a rescuer\, naturalist\, and an active member of her creative community. Born and raised by the venerable bluegrass songwriter\, Irene Kelley\, Sara loves wild plants and animals and music and people and has the scars and stories to prove it. Sara’s songs are conceptual\, yet relatable. Her voice is timeless\, yet singularly her own. And her delivery can shift\, like the weather\, from dark and sultry\, to light-as-a-feather. \nA lover of wild things— plants\, animals\, people\, and music— Nashville native Sara Jean Kelley crafts songs that combine upbeat\, pop-inspired country hooks with thoughtful\, often philosophical lyrical themes that explore our human connection to the natural world. Due to her dark sensibility and slightly melancholic sense of humor\, Kelley’s particular brand of alternative country is multidimensional\, with one foot firmly rooted in her Nashville Country/Americana background\, another foot exploring the realms of alternative rock\, rock and roll\, pop\, and even hip hop influences. Her voice\, at times husky\, dark and sultry\, at times floating light-as-a-feather\, has been compared to celebrated female country stars Brandi Carlisle\, Patti Griffin\, and Lucinda Williams. She’s opened for country music icons Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell\, and her songwriting reveals a clear\, intuitive understanding of what makes a song work. Her latest EP Black Snake\, is about life and death\, transformation and rebirth\, strength and resilience; all the things you experience in your early thirties that you wish you had known a decade earlier. \n \nBrian Revels is energy and angst in a comet trail of music that is as perceptive as it is entertaining. His observations of Americana ring with authenticity. He’s a wily veteran of the Atlanta\, Georgia music scene\, a multi-instrumentalist\, and a natural-born storyteller with a poetic edge. Before forming his current ensemble\, The Heat Lightning\, he helped to build the folk trio\, City Mouse\, into a regional force\, sharing stages with acts like The Steeldrivers\, Parker Milsap\, The Whiskey Gentry\, and Faye Webster. \nBrian Revels & The Heat Lightning made their streaming debut on 2020’s “Jasper County Blues” which Immersive Atlanta called “a collection of stories set between the opening of saloon doors and the desperation of last call.” \nRevels draws from folk and blues and country and bluegrass\, is an alternative to them all and a better man for their influences. The hole he’s worn in his guitar is not as large as the one he’s worn in his heart with the care of the lives he hopes he can redeem one song at a time. His timeless musicality will touch your soul with the drama\, and the significance\, of love lost and regained\, of the human frailty that reduces and yet ennobles each of us.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Big Plate - 10/11 - India Ramey
DESCRIPTION:India Ramey blazes a trail through cinematic spaghetti western landscapes to wood floored Honkytonks and the Appalachian foothills. Saving Country Music describes her as “like Loretta Lynn grew Betty Page bangs\, and a habit of using bad words” and No Depression says of her newest album\, “On her new album\, India Ramey is here to kick ass\, play honky-tonk and chew bubblegum and she’s all out of gum.” \nFeatured as one of the “Must See Acts at SXSW “(No Depression\, Austin Chronicle)\, a Nashville’s Lighting 100 artist of the week\, a three-time Americana Fest showcasing artist\, and one of NPR’s “10 Nashville Artists on the Rise”\, India has only continued to rise among the ranks of as one of Country and Americana’s brightest up and coming artists. Ramey’s last two albums’ mix of Americana noire\, country and southern-gothic songwriting helped expand Ramey’s reputation far beyond the Deep South and she’s toured heavily around and beyond those releases. Her 2020 album\, Shallow Graves debuted at number six on the Euro Americana Charts and landed a song as Rolling Stone’s pick of the week. \nRamey has just released her newest and biggest album yet\, Baptized By The Blaze\, produced by Grammy award winning producer\, Luke Wooten (The SteelDrivers\, Brad Paisley\, Dierks Bentley\, Sunny Sweeny\, Jim Lauderdale). The new album combines India’s classic country sound with her dark cinematic imagery cohesively and seamlessly and it is already off to an impressive start\, blowing up from number #90 to #8 in just one week on the Alt. Country Charts\, landing at #1 most added the first week on Americana Radio and #1 on the Bubblin Up Americana Chart list in the second week on Americana Radio.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special - 10/16 – Mean Mary / Kim Richey
DESCRIPTION:In January 2024\, Kim Richey found herself in Mexico\, gazing out at a sea of people singing along to “I’m Alright\,” one of her classic tracks. The three folks on stage with the veteran\, Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter were also raising their voices in harmony. To her right sat Brandi Carlile\, to her left\, Mary Chapin Carpenter\, and Brandy Clark. The formidable foursome was participating in a songwriter’s round only half-jokingly dubbed “Titans of Americana” at Carlile’s female-forward Girls Just Wanna Weekend festival on the Riviera Maya in Mexico. \n“That was nuts looking out and seeing everybody arm-waving and singing along\,” says Richey\, still both incredulous and cheered by the memory of performing with that supergroup and later appearing alongside other Girls Just Wanna Weekend-ers Annie Lennox\, Lucius\, Allison Russell\, and Sarah McLachlan among others. “It was just like\, ‘wow’!” \nThe good news for fans of this particular Titan is there will soon be a whole new batch of songs to sing along with and arm wave to with the forthcoming release of her 10th studio album Every New Beginning. \nDue out May 24\, 2024 the album features 10 tracks\, written\, or co-written by Richey with a coterie of characters\, over the course of several years\, and produced by critically lauded multi-instrumentalist and producer Doug Lancio (Patty Griffin\, John Hiatt). It was recorded at Skinny Elephant studio in Nashville with engineer Dylan Alldredge in August 2023 with musical assistance from longtime collaborators like Dan Mitchell and Neilson Hubbard — who produced Richey’s 2013 album Thorn in My Heart — and newer friends like Nashville neighbor Aaron Lee Tasjan\, who lends his irrepressibly sparkly musicality to the proceedings. Every New Beginning manages to continue the throughline of Richey’s nearly 30-year career while simultaneously adding a new chapter. \nThe songs represent the full spectrum of the Ohio native’s gifts as both a revered songwriter who can leap from melancholy to mirthful in a single couplet — whose songs have been recorded by the likes of Brooks and Dunn\, Patty Loveless\, and Mary Chapin Carpenter — and owner of one of music’s truly celestial voices. \nThat voice\, which Brandi Carlile has cited as formative in crafting her own style\, is a widely sought after harmony instrument and has been featured on scores of albums including Jason Isbell’s acclaimed Southeastern\, Trisha Yearwood’s Everybody Knows\, Heartbreaker by Ryan Adams\, Reba McEntire’s Starting Over\, and Has Been by Capt. Kirk himself William Shatner\, among many others. Richey’s music continues to loiter at the Americana intersection of country\, folk\, pop\, and rock conjuring everything from Lucinda’s humanity\, the Beatles shimmer\, Tom Petty’s effervescent stomp and Joni Mitchell’s laser-sharp lyrical craft. \nGiven that Richey’s last release was 2020’s Long Way Back… the Songs of Glimmer\, an intimate reimagining of her acclaimed 1999 album\, Every New Beginning is an apt title for the new album. \nIt sprang from something Richey heard in the 2023 documentary King Coal. “It was really great\,” she says of the meditative examination of the cultural legacy of the coal industry. “A little girl narrates the film\, and it starts out with a funeral procession\, and she says\, ‘My dad used to say every new beginning starts with an end.’ And I was like\, ‘I’ll have that. Thank you very much.’ And now it’s the name of my record and what this record means to me.” \nAccordingly\, Richey starts at the beginning with the aching rainy-day remembrance of “Chapel Avenue.” Written with Don Henry\, the pair combined childhood memories to capture a universally recognizable series of flashbacks\, easing into the album with a bittersweet ballad\, a Richey special. \n \n“Mean” Mary James\, youngest of six children\, was born in Geneva\, Alabama\, though her family lived in Florida\, a couple miles below the Alabama line. Her mom (author\, Jean James) and dad (WWII veteran\, William James) lived a very nomadic lifestyle. On one occasion they packed up the family (Mary was four at the time) and moved from Florida to North Minnesota\, near the Canadian border\, to rough it in the wilds. \n \n

SUMMARY:The WDVX Big Plate - 10/18 - Daniel Kimbro / Jay Clark promoting Benefit Shows
DESCRIPTION:Daniel Kimbro will be promoting Appalachian Allies Benefit Show. \nI live in East Tennessee. I have two kids\, a whining\, braying hound dog\, and I have a wife who tolerates my making the pursuit of music my career and lifestyle. \nI play the bass\, mainly. I started out on the guitar\, but the first cover band I auditioned for said\, “we could use a bass player.” \nI grew up in places called Morristown and White Pine in East Tennessee. \nMy parents fed me on a steady diet of bass and crappie fishing\, The Stanley Brothers\, Van Halen\, Flatt & Scruggs\, W.A. Mozart\, The Police\, New Grass Revival\, Guy Clark\, and Townes Van Zandt\, among many others. Mom taught me the recorder and I played the trombone in the 5th grade. We had a family bluegrass band called “Mountain Soul” in which I played mostly guitar\, and then some bass. Dad drove us all over East Tennessee with our plywood bass strapped to the roof of our car. One time we drove into a parking garage and forgot it was up there. I stopped playing trombone in college and immediately got laid. Speaking of getting laid\, back to bluegrass… \nOur family band played only the finest backwoods general stores\, swap meets\, cake walks\, Civil War reenactments\, volunteer fire-halls\, tanning bed salons\, Cocke County family reunions (we crashed one just to meet a really good clawhammer banjoist)\, and one massively awkward Seventh Day Adventist church service…I wouldn’t trade the times on stage with my parents and brothers for anything in the world. I would trade some of the food though. \nI began my “formal” music education in 2001 at the University of Tennessee\, which is where I began studying the double bass. I went to school for way too many years and managed to graduate with a degree and a half in Strings Performance and Studio Music and Jazz\, though I’ll say I’ve learned more in the last 10 years than I did in the previous 25. I’m grateful to my college bass professor\, Rusty Holloway\, for the invaluable lessons he taught me about how to learn and perform music\, and how to be a team player. \nDuring college and after\, I’ve been fortunate to travel and play with many different groups all across the U.S. and Canada\, Northern Europe/Scandinavia\, and Japan. During a tour with the Lovell Sisters Band I had the privilege of playing in front of perennial Grammy award-winning resophonic guitarist Jerry Douglas\, and he asked me to join his band in 2013. I’m grateful to Jerry\, and thanks in no small part to him I’ve been fortunate enough to share the stage (or at least sit around and pick) with many of the folks I grew up listening to. \nIn March of 2017 I was asked to handle bass duties on the Transatlantic Sessions 2017 US Tour\, where I had the honor of subbing for bass great and personal hero Danny Thompson. During that tour I found myself accompanying Sir Aly Bain\, James Taylor\, Jerry Douglas\, Alison Krauss\, Rodney Crowell\, Mary Chapin Carpenter\, Roseanne Cash\, John Paul White\, Sarah Jarosz\, Aoife O’Donovan\, The Milk Carton Kids\, Declan O’Rourke\, Karen Matheson\, Maura O’Connell\, Joe Newberry\, Russ Barenburg\, John Doyle\, James Mackintosh\, John McCukser\, Michael McGoldrick\, and Donald Shaw. That was a whirlwind full of amazing music and lovely people. It is really fun to ask for more James Taylor in your monitor. \nIn 2014 or so I was introduced to Martin Harley by our mutual friend Sam Lewis. Martin and I hit it off and made a couple records\, and now I go to England and Canada a fair bit. There’s lots of rule following\, traffic cameras\, and boot/hat fashion advice flowing both ways (oft ignored).Sam\, Martin and I are currently working on a trio record. That’s right ladies. Trio. \nIn 2018 we in the Jerry Douglas Band were nominated for a Grammy award in the the “Best Contemporary Instrumental Record.” We lost. \nIn late 2018 I was asked to join the Flatt & Scruggs tribute band The Earls of Leicester. I said yes. \nIn early 2019 I was asked to once again step into Danny Thompson’s huge brogues and perform with the Transatlantic Sessions for the UK tour throughout Scotland\, England and Ireland\, alongside featured artists Tim O’brien\, Molly Tuttle\, Gretchen Peters\, Cara Dillon and Paul McKenna. Then we did it again in 2020\, right before Covid\, alongside Tommy Emmanuel\, Cahalen Morrison\, Sierra Hull\, Rachel Sermanni\, and Cathy Jordan. I asked Cathy Jordan to marry me. She said no. \nThough they don’t likely remember me\, I’ve been able to make music with the likes of Brendon James Wright\, Sam Lewis\, Martin Harley\, Robinella\, Hector Qirko\, R.B. Morris\, Casey Driessen\, Larkin Poe\, Thom Hell\, John Frazier\, Matt Menefee\, The Whistles & The Bells\, Jeff Sipe\, John Medeski\, Jason Isbell\, Maggie Longmire\, Your Mom\, John Hiatt\, Sarah Siskind\, …and I’ve been able to play some remarkable venues: The Ryman Auditorium\, The Grand Ole Opry\, The Tennessee Theater\, Bonnaroo\, Telluride Bluegrass Festival\, MerleFest\, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass\, StordFest\, The Vancouver Island Folk Festival\, The Kate Wolf Folk Festival\, The Edmonton Folk Festival\, New Orleans Jazz Fest\, The Blue Note Tokyo\, Chateau St. Michelle\, Jammin at Hippie Jacks\, The Bijou Theater\, Rochester International Jazz Festival\, and a bunch of others I can’t remember right now…anyway\, it’s been fun\, and it’s getting better all the time. Thanks for listening\, and I hope to see you somewhere. \n \nAlthough Jay Clark went to college for 11.5 years and has a PhD in wildlife ecology\, he somehow ended up striking a balance between careers in music & science. Jay grew up in Winchester\, Tennessee\, near where the western escarpment of the Cumberland Plateau crosses from Tennessee into Alabama. His dad was a Cumberland Presbyterian minister for 42 years. His mom an English teacher. Church played a huge roll in Jay’s upbringing. It was in the church where Jay learned to sing & in the mountains where he felt closest to God. Jay wrote his first song in 1990. He didn’t know how to play guitar\, so he taught himself to play in order to put music to his first song. That song was the first of many. \nJay has been a staple in the East Tennessee music scene for more than 20 years. During his college years\, Jay not only trapped & conducted research on black bears in the Smokies\, but also played in a couple of different bluegrass bands\, most notably a brother-style duo with Keith Garrett (currently of The Boxcars) and later in a bluegrass band\, The Stringbeans\, with Robinella and Cruz Contreras (currently of The Black Lillies). Since releasing his first record in 2004 (Pen to Paper)\, Jay has supplemented his career as a scientist with performing his songs across the Southeast & southern Appalachia. Presently\, Jay plays a number of his shows with his band\, Jay Clark & the Tennessee Tree Beavers\, which features Greg Horne on lead guitar & Daniel Kimbro on upright bass. Jay recently released his fifth recording\, Of Mountains & Heartbreak (2016). He still uses the other side of his brain as an adjunct professor in the Biology Department at Maryville College. Jay resides in the foothills of the Smokies on 31.5 acres in Rockford\, TN\, with his wife\, Stacy\, and their pack of rescue hounds. For more info\, visit www.jayclarkmusic.com.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special - 10/19 - Tim Chandler / Molly Frances
DESCRIPTION:Good songwriting matters to all of us whether we know it or not. It tells the truth in a way that keeps us all moving towards something better. When songs become laundry lists and trend chasers\, they become nothing and so do we. \nTim Chandler is a songwriter dedicated to telling the truth in song in an out of the box way. Combining his influences of bluegrass\, country\, and folk\, his music is drawn from life in work\, family\, and frustrations with songs that don’t say anything. \nGrowing up a preacher’s son in Western Kentucky\, Tim’s first exposure to music came through the traditional hymns that made up every service. Now\, his influences range all over the board\, drawn from the places and people he has worked with\, roamed with\, and written with. From West Coast cover bands to Rocky Mountain forestry crews\, swampy Florida factory floors to construction sites in Alabama. Now\, he wants to share those stories with you. \nTim has a whole catalog of songs to his name and now his self-titled record is available to purchase or stream. You can keep up with him and his bandmates on Facebook\, Instagram or wherever you stream music. For inquiries about booking or collaborating\, please contact below. \n \nMolly Frances is an indie pop singer-songwriter based in Nashville\, Tennessee. Known for her blend of feel-good instrumentation and deeply heartfelt lyrics\, she gained traction online after the release of her song “Meet the Devil” in 2022. Growing up in Annapolis\, Maryland\, Molly relocated to Nashville in 2018 to study at Belmont University’s School of Music\, where she quickly became a standout in the local indie pop scene. With influences like Holly Humberstone\, Indigo De Souza\, and Leith Ross\, she is inspired by her heroes as well as her own community of local musicians and friends. In May 2024\, she released her latest single\, “Holding Your Hand\,” an ambient ballad that reflects on themes of love and loss.
