SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special - 5/15 - Gabe Lee
DESCRIPTION:Equal parts classic songwriter and modern-day storyteller\, Gabe Lee has built his own bridge between country\, folk and rock. Lee has been collecting stories for years\, both onstage and off. “I used to bartend\,” says the Nashville-based songwriter\, “which means I was also a cheap therapist for whomever happened to be sitting on the barstool. Whether they were there to celebrate or drink away their problems\, I heard about whatever they were going through. It was my job to have that face-to-face interaction — that connection. Being a full-time musician isn’t much different.” \nWith critically-acclaimed albums like 2019’s farmland\, 2020’s Honky-Tonk Hell\, and 2022’s The Hometown Kid\, Lee created that connection by delivering his own stories to an ever-growing audience. His fourth record\, Drink the River\, takes a different approach. This time\, Lee isn’t offering listeners a peek into his internal world; he’s holding up a mirror to reflect their own. \nStorytelling has been an anchor of Lee’s music since the very beginning. Raised by Taiwanese parents in Nashville\, TN\, he left home during his teenage years and headed to Indiana\, where he obtained college degrees in literature and journalism. Lee launched his career as a genre-bending musician after returning to Tennessee\, quickly progressing from dive bar gigs to high-profile opening slots (including shows with Jason Isbell\, Los Lobos\, and other artists who\, like him\, blurred the lines between roots-rock\, country\, and other forms of American folk music) to his own headlining shows. Throughout it all\, he drew upon the narrative skills he’d sharpened as a student. If albums like Honky-Tonk Hell and The Hometown Kid often unfolded like autobiographical entries from his road journal\, then Drink the River shows an even broader range of his storytelling abilities. Lee isn’t just writing songs about himself; he’s writing songs about all of us. And maybe\, in doing so\, he can bring us a little closer together.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special - 5/17 - D Boone Pitman
DESCRIPTION:Pittman’s musical story begins in the early 1970s at the grand opening of the local town drug store. His late father\, from whom Pittman would later inherit his trademark Martin D-28 acoustic guitar\, basically forced him to sing a Johnny Cash song\, much to the delight of the crowd that had gathered there. Pittman\, though he immediately received enthusiastic accolades and even tips\, wasn’t havin’ it. “I hated it\,” he recalls\, “but I In my room\, I’m playing air guitar and pretending to be Elvis\, but to do it in public as a kid was really tough. It wasn’t that I struggled doing it\, it was just more the fact that I was being made to do something. That ended up driving me into a phase where I refused to sing out in public at all.” Even going to a Johnny Cash concert at the age of 5 with his mother wasn’t enough to lure Pittman back into the spotlight\, and transcribing the lyrics to hit songs off 45s for his father didn’t quite do the trick either—but it did lay the groundwork for the lyrical depth and flair that Pittman showed so effortlessly right off the bat with his 2019 debut Bluegrass American Dream. “My dad would pay me a dollar a song to sit down and figure the words out for him\,” Pittman chuckles. “I have to really question how good I was at it because I was so young\, but I guess he was able to use it. Who knows how many of the lines I’d get right at the end of the day\, but I think that’s when I got my first appreciation for lyrics.” “Back when I was 7 or 8\,” he continues\, “country rock was really big\, and ‘Lyin’ Eyes’ by The Eagles was a big hit. I remember that song specifically because there were so many verses in it. Even at that age\, I could appreciate the darkness behind the cheating and the lying and everything in that song.” \nhttps://youtu.be/v6-c5Vrm1UE?si=-1T2FULAWwJR3yC4

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special - 5/20 - Rees Shad
DESCRIPTION:Rees Shad has been crafting musical narratives across decades \nIn the rich tapestry of Americana music\, few artists have woven stories as intricate and compelling as Rees Shad. Since his 1994 debut “Anderson\, Ohio”\, Shad has been on a relentless quest to push the boundaries of musical storytelling\, earning him a reputation as not just a songwriter\, but a true architect of narratives in the world of contemporary folk and Americana. \nThe Evolution of a Storyteller \nWith a catalog spanning an impressive 16 solo albums over three decades\, Shad’s journey is a testament to his unwavering commitment to artistic growth. Each release serves as a chapter in his ongoing exploration of sound\, story\, and the human experience. From the early days when critics dubbed him a “wordsmith to watch\,” to his current status as a celebratedAmericana artist\, Shad’s evolution has been nothing short of remarkable. \nThe Art of Musical World-Building \nWhat sets Shad apart is his unique approach to composition. “I often work by assigning myself compositional parameters\,” he explains. This method has led to a diverse body of work\, each album a distinct world unto itself. Whether it’s crafting story songs in the style of particular writers\, responding to specific production styles\, or creating overarching narrative arcs\, Shad’s process is more akin to that of a novelist or filmmaker than a traditional songwriter. \nThe Galahad Blues: A Masterpiece of Reimagination \nShad’s latest offering\, *The Galahad Blues*\, exemplifies his innovative spirit. This ambitious project reimagines the Knights of the Round Table as 1940s Chicago gangsters\, with King Arthur’s Camelot transformed into a smoky nightclub. “The project has involved me wordsmithing on a whole different level\,” Shad notes\, highlighting his deep dive into the hipster language of the 1930s and ’40s. \nThe album showcases Shad’s ability to blend influences seamlessly\, drawing inspiration from American Songbook writers like Cole Porter and the Gershwins while maintaining his distinct voice. The result is a cinematic experience that transports listeners to a world where honor among thieves is explored through riveting melodies and dramatic arrangements. \nCollaborative Spirit and Musical Mastery \nWhile Shad’s vision drives his projects\, he’s no lone wolf. *The Galahad Blues* features his band\, The Conversations (Jeff Link on bass\, Rob ‘Bobby K’ Kovacs on drums\, Carlos Valdez on percussion)\, alongside an impressive roster of guest musicians\, including Larry Campbell (Bob Dylan\, Paul Simon) and Ira Coleman (Herbie Hancock\, Sting). This collaborative approach adds depth and texture to Shad’s already rich sonic landscapes.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special - 5/21 - Ash Taylor / Frank Viele
DESCRIPTION:They say she’s a “Bad Ash.” Ash Taylor is a country music recording artist and award-winning songwriter whose high-energy performances and authentic storytelling have earned her a reputation as one of the most exciting voices in country music today. Born and raised in Bakersfield\, California—the home of the legendary Bakersfield Sound—Ash grew up inspired by icons like Buck Owens\, Loretta Lynn\, Brandy Clark\, and Gretchen Wilson. Driven by a passion for music\, she sold everything she owned to move to Nashville\, Tennessee\, where she began building her career from the ground up. From sleeping in her car to playing honky-tonks on Lower Broadway to nationwide touring\, Ash’s determination and talent have taken her from humble beginnings to stages across the country. \nKnown for her relatable lyrics and electrifying performances\, Ash has toured extensively and continues to perform as part of her Stuck on Indiana tour\, captivating fans with her signature California country sound. She’s played at renowned venues such as The Bluebird Cafe and shared the stage with artists like Colt Ford\, Elvie Shane\, and Aly Walker. Her debut EP\, Bakersfield\, climbed to #60 on the iTunes Top 100 Country Albums chart and earned her recognition from the Bakersfield Country Music Awards. Ash has also penned songs for artists like Big Smo\, Ryan Larkins\, Noah Smith\, and guitar legend Johnny Hiland\, showcasing her versatility as a songwriter. \nIn addition to her growing list of achievements\, Ash is a dedicated mentor\, teaching songwriting masterclasses at colleges and universities and continued-learning campuses nationwide\, including Sweetwater Headquarters in Fort Wayne\, Indiana. Her passion for connecting with people is reflected not only in her music but also in her ability to bring real stories and emotions to life on stage as well as in the hands of the other musicians and writers she guides and teaches. Ash lives in Nashville with her husband\, Chris—her lead guitar player and band leader—and their golden retriever\, Melody (Mel). Whether she’s performing at a sold-out venue or writing her next hit\, Ash Taylor continues to inspire fans with her grit\, heart\, and undeniable talent. \n \nFrank Viele’s brand of New England blues rock tugs at the heartstrings\, pulling the listener on a surprise journey that transcends genre. \nYet even as he’s racked up accolades over the past 7 years — including New England Music Awards for Album of the Year\, Male Performer of the Year\, Songwriter of The Year (X2)\, and Live Act of The Year for gutsy\, gritty tracks like “Broken Love Song” and “‘Til The Bourbon’s All Gone” — he’s rarely paused to savor the moment before moving on to yet another tour\, album\, or collaboration. \nIt wasn’t until the pandemic hit in early 2020 and he was forced to hunker down that Viele realized that time itself was the world’s most precarious\, yet precious\, resource. \nAt that time\, Viele embarked on a writing-and-recording journey with Jimmy Nutt (Jason Isbell\, American Aquarium\, The Dead South) and James LeBlanc (Travis Tritt\, Will Hoge\, Tim McGraw\, Faith Hill\, Dylan LeBlanc\, Kid Rock\, Rascal Flatts) of Muscle Shoals\, Alabama. Within this co-writing collaborative partnership\, Viele approached each new song slowly\, intentionally\, and with an open mind\, challenging himself to transcend the limits of genre and industry expectations. \nIn 2021\, a handful songs that he had started recording in Connecticut\, and finished at Nutthouse Recording Studios in Muscle Shoals\, were brought to life in the 2021 EP “Time Is A Thief.” This EP won him the coveted New England Music Award for “Songwriter of The Year” for the second time and acted as a prequel to Viele’s upcoming full-length 2023 album. \nIn January 2023\, the first track off Viele’s forthcoming\, 13-song album completed in Nutthouse Recording Studios\, “Hearts We Left Behind”\, came out in January of 2023 and was featured on Boston’s Country 102.5 as their “Song Of The Week”. “Hearts” continues to receive critical acclaim citing Viele’s strength as a storyteller and his signature vocal delivery. \n“Frank Viele continues to astound with his new single entitled “Hearts We Left Behind” and has once again crafted a classic. Viele is a consummate wordsmith. His songs contain magic dust capable of spinning webs of musical ecstasy.” (MyAmpMusic.co) \nThe “magic dust” they are referring to has been gathered from experiences on the road and in venues across the country. Viele built his sound and narrated his journey while constantly touring the United States\, playing hundreds of shows each year and sharing the stage with artists such as John Waite\, Jeffrey Gaines\, Lee DeWyze\, Zach Myers of Shinedown\, Bob Marley’s Wailers\, Howie Day\, Xavier Rudd\, Ingrid Michaelson\, Tony Lucca\, Pat McGee\, and Blues Traveler\, among others\, since the release of his first solo album in 2015. \nBut Frank Viele’s musical journey starts long before that… Fondly listening to his grandmother play piano as a child and later reinvigorated as a teenager inspired by his older brother’s taste in music and an acoustic guitar he left behind when he moved to the West Coast\, Viele developed a deep appreciation for a wide range of genres including rock\, blues\, folk\, and country. \nHe began writing his own music as a teenager and quickly developed a knack for crafting deeply personal and emotive songs that spoke to the human experience. \nAfter honing his craft fronting New York City based Jam/Funk/Rock Outfit “Frank Viele & The Manhattan Project”\, Viele released his debut solo album “Fall Your Way” in 2015\, which was met with critical acclaim including 2 New England Music Awards for Album of The Year and Male Performer of The Year. (On top of the Live Act of The Year Award he had received in 2014). \nStacking up additional accolades on the road in 2016\, Frank Viele won the Deli Magazine award for “New England’s Best Emerging Folk/Soul Act”. He then released his second solo album\, “What’s His Name?” which made it’s way onto the AMA Charts and Relix National Jam Radio Charts carried by the single\, “Pomegranate”. \nThe Album\, “What’s His Name?” won Frank Viele the New England Music Award for “Songwriter of The Year” which paved this Connecticut musician’s path to Muscle Shoals\, Alabama where he began the next chapter of his writing and recording journey. \nViele’s music is characterized not only by his powerful vocals\, soulful guitar playing\, and poignant lyrics\, but also its deep honesty. This is an artist who is not afraid of wearing his heart on his sleeve\, and dig deep into the joys and struggles of life. He has been praised for his ability to blend elements of folk\, blues\, and rock into a unique sound that is both timeless and contemporary. Over the years\, Viele has built a dedicated fanbase thanks to his dynamic live performances and his ability to connect with his audience on a deeply personal level. \nWith several albums under his belt and a growing reputation as one of the most exciting voices in Americana music\, Frank Viele continues to push the boundaries of what it means to be a modern singer-songwriter. Whether he’s performing on stage or in the studio\, he approaches his music with a passion and intensity that is infectious\, making more and more folks take notice…one stage at a time.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special - 5/24 - John M / Rino Calandra
DESCRIPTION:Music Connection Magazine named JOHN M as one of the “Top 100 Unsigned Live Acts\,” twice! (In 2018. and again in 2023.) \nJohn M is endorsed by G-7 Capos\, FISHMAN Trnsducers Inc\, and CAD Microphones. \nExperienced and confident. His songs are well crafted\, and take you back to a time when it was about the music. Mixing well placed licks between delicious melodies\, his vocals are straight-forward and his stories compelling. Pierce Brochetti— Music Connection Magazine\, August\, 20 \nPERFORMANCE CREDITS include the Bluebird Café\, (Nashville)\,True Music Room at Cambria Hotel\, (Nashville\,) Blue Plate Special\, (WDVX Knoxville\,) Eddie’s Attic (Atlanta)\, \, Coffee Gallery and Russ & Julie’s House concerts\, (Los Angeles)\, plus numerous other venues and live radio & TV appearances in nearly all 50 states. \nEqually comfortable fronting a band or performing solo with just his 12 string & 6 string guitars and his voice\, he has a captivating and riveting stage presence. \n \nMy name is Rino Calandra and I am originally from Genoa (Italy). Passion for Music and guitars made me move to USA\, and since 2014 I live in Nashville (Tennessee). I am a fingerstyle guitar player and singer songwriter. I played in many shows\, and festival in Europe\, Canada\, and here in the United States. In addition to be a musician\, I started (back in 2012) the activity of “guitar hunter”. Looking for guitars that were requested of me. Vintage \, limited edition\, left hand\, and more. Starting this with acquaintances and friends: to then build a real clientele (expecially in Italy). This made me also passionate about the art of building a guitar\, the diversity of woods\, and the whole process to achieve this. My future plan is to open a left-handed (and right-handed) guitar shop here in Nashville. I also worked for Gibson guitar for a short time\, but it didn’t work out. Playing the guitar completely changed my life. It gave me the chance to be myself\, communicate (when I didn’t yet speak English)\, meet people\, and have something to bring all my emotions to. I’m currently working on my new instrumental guitar record\, continuing my activity as a guitar hunter\, purchasing guitars for my future shop\, and living my life in Nashville.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special - 5/27 - Zack Miles / Lazarus Lake
DESCRIPTION:Zack Miles is a Singer/songwriter with folk\, americana\, and bluegrass influence. Coffee-core. \n \nLazarus Lake\, the alt-country outfit of singer/songwriter Michael Jones\, arrives with its debut record Family Tree\, out May 30th\, 2025 on Kindness Records. \nBlending homespun southern rock with the no-frills directness of Americana tradition\, Family Tree explores the ties that bind and the ways that they’re strained—with an eye to redeem the moments when life falls apart and to keep alive the memory of loved ones lost. \nFamily Tree is a record built on the back of long nights and longer weeks in the years that Jones spent gigging solo and in country bands in and around Knoxville\, TN through the first half of the decade. The debut record focuses on offering stories of loss and growth that are guided by a gentle hand. \nCovering adoration\, regret\, grief\, and everything in between\, these songs frame the simple\, elegant core of the album: even as it ends—and regardless of how you feel about it at any given time—your family is forever.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special - 5/31 - Joe Kaplow / Sean Carson
DESCRIPTION:Joe Kaplow:\nBefore I started my career I had a choice: to take over my parent’s thoroughbred farm in New Jersey or pursue music full time in California and relinquish the farm to sale. I still wonder what life would have looked like had I stayed\, but who can resist the gold rush? Besides\, I plan to get back there one day on another farm with some other red barn. \nMy music comes from life’s moments — smelling 4 acres of freshly cut grass\, watching the steam from a horse’s breath in the early morning\, finally holding the neck of my guitar after holding bridles and worn wooden handles all day. 4000 acres of freshly burnt wildfire\, watching the steam from the Pacific Ocean’s breath in the early morning\, finally holding the neck of my guitar after clutching the worn steering wheel of the tour van all day. \nNow my reality is in Bonny Doon\, CA\, where mountains meet the sea. I am in my recording studio\, aptly named Hippie Cowboy\, every day. Slow and steady; keep it fun\, stay engaged. All for the moment when the song finally sounds right. My dad passed away a couple years ago — his bullwhip is on the wall\, his Harley is in the driveway. He visits me in dreams\, and oh\, the moment I wake up! Sometimes I write for him. Sometimes for my mom\, who I hope will move out to California soon. Maybe she could volunteer at an equestrian center… \nA person is made from their moments\, like their music is made. I know this is a bio but I shouldn’t have to say much. Listen to the record. If I’ve done my job well\, you will know me by the end. \n \nIf you love country music\, then you’re in the right place! join us for Sean Carson! \n \n

By blending the nostalgic traditions of songwriting with unique new-wave sensibilities\, she creates a refreshing sound all her own. In addition to making her own music\, Ciarra has also composed many works for theater and film. \nIn 2017\, Ciarra released her first full-length “Seasons\,” written and recorded entirely in her home. It was during this recording process that she started to experiment with different sounds and textures\, igniting her love for production. After two more years of touring and recording\, Ciarra followed up “Seasons” with her second full-length “Call It What You Will” in 2019. Shedding the nu-folk sound for more of an Indie/alt pop direction\, “Call It What You Will” was an ambitious project that artfully portrayed Ciarra’s growth as an artist. Produced by Fragale\, the album was recorded at Nashphone Recording\, a studio owned and operated by engineer Jesse Bolduc (of the band Candy Ambulance )

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special - 6/7 - Brandon Maddox / Conner Brooke
DESCRIPTION:From sharing the stage with superstar\, Brett Eldredge\, as well as acclaimed performances in casinos\, clubs\, and festivals to having original songs featured in movies and appearing on TV and radio shows\, Brandon Maddox\, has quickly established himself as one of Country Music’s rising stars. He was named\, “Monster Truck Artist of the Year” and was both a Josie Award recipient in 2017 for his hit single “Dixie Chaser” as well as the winner of “Song of the Year” in 2019 for his song “Drive Me to Drink.” \nBrandon’s dad schooled him in classic rock\, so it was only natural that when the youngster picked up the guitar and taught himself to play\, he used a Beatle’s songbook. While teaching himself\, he noticed a common thread among the songs—the songs were written by actual members of The Beatles. Brandon wrote his first song at the tender age of 11 and now has an original catalog of over a thousand songs\, a few of which have won awards. After college Brandon moved to Nashville from his hometown near Chattanooga\, TN to pursue his songwriting passion. \nhttps://youtu.be/fM4SnucrOxQ?si=v7Ai4nhFPSjKQOQy \nConner Brooke will also join us this day! \nhttps://youtu.be/SBZjHjiYO5g?si=aO9vRXiFavOKuO1W

SUMMARY:WDVX Summer Nights - 6/11 - Jim Lauderdale & the Game Changers / Tidalwave Road
DESCRIPTION:Support for WDVX comes from Yee Haw Brewing Company on North Broadway in Knoxville and ORNL Federal Credit Union supporting WDVX Summer Nights… Live Music at Yee Haw. Jim Lauderdale and the Game Changers and Tidalwave Road will perform on June 11th. \nAt any given time\, you’re likely to find Jim Lauderdale making music\, whether he’s laying down a new track in the studio or working through a spontaneous melody at his home in Nashville. And if he’s not actively crafting new music\, he’s certainly thinking about it. “It’s a constant challenge to try to keep making better and better records\, write better and better songs. I still always feel like I’m a developing artist\,” he says. This may be a surprising sentiment from a man who’s won two Grammys\, released 34 full-length albums\, and taken home the Americana Music Association’s coveted Wagonmaster Award. But forthcoming album Game Changer is convincing evidence that the North Carolina native is only continuing to hone his craft. \nOperating under his own label\, Sky Crunch Records\, for the first time since 2016\, Lauderdale recorded Game Changer at the renowned Blackbird Studios in Nashville\, co-producing the release with Jay Weaver and pulling from songs he’d written over the last several years. “There’s a mixture on this record of uplifting songs and\, at the same time\, songs of heartbreak and despair—because that’s part of life as well\,” he says. “In the country song world especially\, that’s always been part of it. That’s real life.” \nLauderdale would know: He’s been a vital part of the country music ecosystem since 1991\, when he released his debut album and began penning songs for an impressively long roster of country music greats. “When I was a teenager wanting to be a bluegrass banjo player\, I never would have imagined that I would get to work with people like Ralph Stanley\, Robert Hunter\, Loretta Lynn\, George Jones\, Emmylou Harris\, Elvis Costello\, Lucinda Williams and John Oates \,” he muses. “Getting to work with them inspires me greatly to this day\, and I know it always will.” \,” he muses. “Getting to work with them inspires me greatly to this day\, and I know it always will.” \nFrom rollicking guitar riffs on “That Kind of Life (That Kind of Day)” to the slow\, sweet harmonies of “I’ll Keep My Heart Open For You\,” Game Changer shows off Lauderdale’s ingenuity as a singer\, songwriter\, and producer—while reestablishing him as one of Americana’s most steadfast champions. “Country music is constantly evolving\, but I’ll always have a soft spot in my heart for steel guitar and a Telecaster\,” he says. “I have done my job on this record if people who love classic country feel like they can put it on\, or have it in their collection\, and it would fit right in.” \nRespecting the past doesn’t mean he’s not breaking new ground. “We’re All We’ve Got\,” a co-write with Mary Gauthier and Jaimee Harris\, offers a timely message about healing torn relationships at home and across the world. And “Friends Again\,” a grinning number about rekindling a friendship\, is fresh and forward-looking. At every turn\, Lauderdale’s collaborative spirit and genuine love for the creative process reveal themselves in thoughtful\, well-crafted songs sure to stand the test of time. “When everything works right\, it’s just magical to be able to hear them back\,” he says. “You feel\, at least for those three-and-a-half minutes\, like life makes sense.” \n \nTidalwave Road is made up of: \nBEN PARKER\nBanjo\, Vocals\nBenjamin Russell Parker grew up in Williamsburg and McKee\, Kentucky and still makes his home in Williamsburg today. \nBen started playing music at age 19\, being heavily influenced by Earl Scruggs\, Ralph Stanley and Dave Evans. As a multi-instrumentalist\, Ben plays Banjo\, Guitar and Fiddle. \nBefore Tidalwave Road was born\, he was a proud member of the ‘Colonel’ Larry Fuller Band. Fuller was a 40-year veteran musician and beloved Kentucky Colonel who was adored far and wide by his fans and sadly passed in 2007. \nAs a founding member of Tidalwave Road\, Ben Parker brings his unique Banjo and vocal stylings to the band along with his good humor. He is a professional Barber by day and is happily married to his lovely wife Trish\, with whom he has two children\, Cole and Landenn. \nBen also loves to kayak\, ride ATV’s\, and try to build fiddles. \nCARLIE PARKER\nMandolin\, Vocals\nCarlie Parker grew up on Tidal Wave Road in Rockholds\, Kentucky and still makes his home in Rockholds today.\nCarlie started playing music at age 8\, and credits his Grandparent and his Uncle Nick as his biggest influences. As a multi-instrumentalist\, Carlie plays Mandolin and Guitar.\nAs a founding member of Tidalwave Road\, and kin to Ben\, Carlie brings his special family blend of harmony to the band. He is a professional bus driver and mower by day and is happily married to his best friend\, with whom he has one son that he is currently teaching how to play music. \nDANIEL PARKER\nBass\nDaniel Parker grew up in Corbin\, Kentucky and still makes his home in Corbin today. \nDaniel started playing music later in life at age 31\, and enjoys a wide range of music from Metallica to John Prine. His favorite all-time Bluegrass artist is Tim O’Brien. Daniel is the backbone to the hard-driving Tidalwave sound with his rock solid bass skills. \nHe manufactures custom cutting tools by day and enjoys drawing and spending time with the love of his life and their poodle that sleeps between them every night. \nROBERT SULFRIDGE\nGuitar\nRobert Sulfridge grew up in Whitley County\, Kentucky and makes his home in Williamsburg\, Kentucky today.\nRobert started playing music at 6 years old\, and was heavily influenced by a diverse list of players including Tony Rice\, Wyatt Rice\, Cody Kilby\, Stevie Ray Vaughn\, Carlos Santana\, BB King and Mike Riddle. He is a multi-instrumentalist\, fluent in Guitar\, Mandolin and Piano. Robert is also the sound technician for the band\, their annual bluegrass festival\, and other events. His open mind and creative vision lend a hand in pushing the boundaries of traditional bluegrass for the band on song selection for recording and stage.\nBy day\, Robert is Vice President of Die Casting Company and also loves camping\, attending live music events\, ‘Mom & Pop’ coffee shops\, all with his wife and best friend\, Jessica. Robert and Jessica have two ‘fur-children\,’ Moose\, a Saint Bernard\, and Max\, a Bernese Mountain Dog. \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:The WDVX Big Plate - 6/13 - Jay Clark & The Tennessee Tree Beavers
DESCRIPTION:Although Jay Clark went to college for 11.5 years and has a PhD in wildlife ecology\, he somehow ended up striking a balance between careers in music & science. Jay grew up in Winchester\, Tennessee\, near where the western escarpment of the Cumberland Plateau crosses from Tennessee into Alabama. His dad was a Cumberland Presbyterian minister for 42 years. His mom an English teacher. Church played a huge roll in Jay’s upbringing. It was in the church where Jay learned to sing & in the mountains where he felt closest to God. Jay wrote his first song in 1990. He didn’t know how to play guitar\, so he taught himself to play in order to put music to his first song. That song was the first of many. \nJay has been a staple in the East Tennessee music scene for more than 20 years. During his college years\, Jay not only trapped & conducted research on black bears in the Smokies\, but also played in a couple of different bluegrass bands\, most notably a brother-style duo with Keith Garrett (currently of The Boxcars) and later in a bluegrass band\, The Stringbeans\, with Robinella and Cruz Contreras (currently of The Black Lillies). Since releasing his first record in 2004 (Pen to Paper)\, Jay has supplemented his career as a scientist with performing his songs across the Southeast & southern Appalachia. Presently\, Jay plays a number of his shows with his band\, Jay Clark & the Tennessee Tree Beavers\, which features Greg Horne on lead guitar & Daniel Kimbro on upright bass. Jay recently released his fifth recording\, Of Mountains & Heartbreak (2016). He still uses the other side of his brain as an adjunct professor in the Biology Department at Maryville College. Jay resides in the foothills of the Smokies on 31.5 acres in Rockford\, TN\, with his wife\, Stacy\, and their pack of rescue hounds.
