This band was built on reimagining tradition\, on honoring the old ways while pushing them someplace new.” \nOn their intoxicating new album\, Thank the Lord…it’s The Pink Stones\, Pinkston and his bandmates do precisely that\, offering up a joyful\, adventurous take on ’60s twang that blurs the lines between cosmic country\, folk\, bluegrass\, soul\, and psychedelic rock. Recorded once again with co-producer/engineer Henry Barbe (Drive-By Truckers\, Deerhunter) in the band’s hometown of Athens\, GA\, the collection showcases a more deliberate\, mature side of The Pink Stones’ sound\, one that reflects all the personal and sonic growth that’s defined the last few years for the hard touring five-piece. The songs on Thank the Lord… are humble and timeless\, full of wry\, sardonic wit and rich\, evocative storytelling\, and the performances are easygoing and amiable\, with an effortlessly natural feel that belies the masterful craftsmanship behind them. The result is a record that wears its influences proudly on its sleeve\, even as it a subverts expectation\, a work of poignant longing and playful humor that tips its cap to everyone from Merle Haggard and Earl Scruggs to Don Williams and The Byrds as it looks both forwards and backwards all at once. \n“A lot has changed since the last record\,” says Pinkston. “We’ve grown up\, traveled all over the world\, said goodbye to old bandmates and welcomed new ones. All of that’s helped our sound grow and evolve into what it is now.” \nStarted alone by Pinkston in his Athens apartment\, The Pink Stones quickly emerged to widespread acclaim with their 2021 debut\, Introducing…The Pink Stones\, which earned praise from Rolling Stone\, Under The Radar\, No Depression\, American Songwriter\, and more. The band returned two years later with their similarly well-received sophomore effort\, You Know Who\, which featured an appearance from Nikki Lane and landed on Bandcamp’s Best Country Music of 2023 list. Dates across the US\, Canada\, Europe\, and Australia followed\, including festival appearances from 30A to Hopscotch\, and while the band’s rapid growth could be traced in large part back to the undeniable energy of their raucous\, freewheeling live shows\, working at such a relentless pace came with a price. \n“We were touring constantly the year after You Know Who came out\,” Pinkston recalls\, “and some of the guys realized that wasn’t the best fit for them. That forced me to find the kind of players who really wanted to be on the road all the time\, and it forced me to step up and play more lead guitar\, which naturally affected the kind of music we were making together.” \nWith new additions Caleb Boese (pedal steel) and Michael Alexander (drums) joining Pinkston (guitar/vocals) and longtime compatriots Adam Wayton (bass) and Neil Golden (keyboards)\, the band resumed touring at their usual breakneck speed\, working up tunes for roughly half the new record live before heading into the studio. \n“I wanted to keep things fresh for the recording process\, so even though we’d played a bunch of the songs on the road\, I made sure there was still plenty of material the guys hadn’t heard until it was time to record\,” says Pinkston. “There’s just something about the sound of a band finding the songs as they’re playing them for the first time that you can never recreate.” \nThat sense of raw discovery and excitement is plain to hear on Thank the Lord…\, which opens with the shuffling title track. Featuring mandolin and vocals from bluegrass phenom Wyatt Ellis\, the tune is laidback and self-assured\, dazzling in the depth and breadth of its musicianship without ever resorting to flashiness or cheap thrills. Pinkston’s tongue is planted firmly in cheek here as he gives thanks to God for the lover that’s made his life complete\, and it’s not the last time he’ll offer up a sly take on country music’s longstanding—and sometimes conflicted—relationship with religious imagery. The tender “Such A Sight” (featuring former Pink Stones pedal steel guitarist John Neff on dobro) finds Heaven right here on Earth\, while the waltzing “Start With Your Name” contemplates the ninth commandment’s prohibition on deceit and dishonesty\, and the puckish “Hometown Hotel” forgives itself for some good old-fashioned sinning. \n“I’ve never been religious\,” says Pinkston\, “but I’ve always been fascinated with those early country guys who sang gospel tunes and wore suits with crosses on them even while they were getting into some pretty immoral stuff. I wanted this album to touch on both sides of that coin.” \nDespite its flirtations with virtue and vice (Pinkston stands in front of a church on the cover\, casting a shadow with a subtle pair of horns)\, Thank the Lord… is\, at its heart\, a classic Pink Stones rumination on human connection\, on love\, loss\, and desire. The aching “Real Sad Movies\, Big Jet Planes” can’t seem to escape reminders of the one who got away; the honky-tonking “If I Can’t Win (With You)” learns to go it alone; the Latin-tinged “Cold Eye of Leaving” (featuring vocals from longtime Pink Stones manager Drew Beskin) watches love walk out the door; the bittersweet “Summer’s Love (Winter’s Pain)” comes face to face with loneliness; and the lilting “Hard To Kill” grapples with emotions that just won’t seem to fade. “It’s hard to kill / The way that you feel\,” Pinkston sings over soaring pedal steel and driving fiddle (played here by special guest Libby Weitnauer). “When love’s still real / But down went the deal.” \n“I’ve always tended to gravitate toward those kinds of stories as a writer\,” says Pinkston. “Heartbreak\, regret\, unrequited love\, that’s our wheelhouse.” \nAnd yet it’s perhaps the most hopeful tune on the record\, the effervescent “Too Busy\,” that best encapsulates the magic of Thank the Lord…\, with its infectious melody and double-timed chorus all delivered with the relaxed\, unhurried air of someone who’s found exactly what they want (and knows exactly how to hold onto it). \n“Our last record got really loud and fast and in your face at times\, but it was important to me that we lay back on this one\,” explains Pinkston. “The band played softer\, I sang softer\, and we just embraced the mystery of it all.” \nThat is\, of course\, until the song’s final seconds\, when the band’s gentle serenity gives way to an all-out psych-rock jam featuring Curtis Callis on banjo. It’s a brief\, but potent reminder: some rules are made to be broken. \n \nThe Secret City Improv Comedy Festival will be featuring Four First Names in a fully improvised musical!

Those arrangements came together as Remi\, Gabe\, and their small band of ASU music students performed around the southwest during the early 2020s\, turning songs like “Posterity” and “Return To Sender” into combinations of full-bodied folk and alternative Americana. Like all of her material\, Remi had written those songs alone\, using her ear — rather than her knowledge of theory — to guide the way. Things I’ve Said Before finds a way to highlight that intimacy\, too. Tracks like “Don’t Drive Me Home” and “Overseas” showcase Remi not only as the frontwoman of an amplified band\, but as a solo artist who makes music for rainy days and quiet mornings. These are the record’s two halves — the warm\, acoustic-heavy folk songs\, most of which were recorded at home; and the eclectic\, electrified tracks that cast a wider net\, most of which were tracked by a live band in a professional studio — and they come together on “Punchline.” Opening with thick stacks of Remi’s own multi-tracked vocal harmonies\, “Punchline” grows into something bigger with help from the entire ensemble. It’s the sound of the bedroom giving way to the band. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“We wanted the album to be kaleidoscopic\,” says Gabe\, who shares guitar duties with Remi throughout the album\, their two instruments interlocking and entwining into unique shapes on songs like the airily buoyant “Might Not Be True.” “We get bored of records that just have one sound.” \nThere’s nothing boring about Things I’ve Said Before\, whose diversity is tied together by Remi’s songwriting and effortless voice. A lifelong singer\, she pushes her vocals into unique directions\, from the jazzy inflections of “Don’t Drive Me Home” — a warm\, woozy track with finger-plucked guitar arpeggios and a soundscape-worthy outro — to the conversational croon of “For the Record.” She duets with Gabe on “Waltz\, No. 1\,” swapping harmonies during one of the album’s loveliest songs. Her nylon-string guitar serves as its own voice\, too\, and its plucked chords run beneath the entire record\, adding movement to her melodies and grounding everything in an earthy sound. \n“When I’m writing music\, I’m just following a whim or a melody\,” Remi says. “I’m not trying to use my classical training or my knowledge of theory\, because when you do that\, it’s easy to overthink things. You can get in your own way when you know too much about the theory of what you’re doing.” \nMuch of Things I’ve Said Before finds Remi in a reflective mood\, coming to terms with her role as an artist. “I wrote these songs while learning to consider myself a songwriter\,” she says\, describing the album as “my journey of exploration as an artist when I didn’t feel like one yet.” The lyrics are filled with paradoxes\, puzzles\, and multiple perspectives\, with Remi attempting to rid herself of black-and-white thinking and\, instead\, embrace the grey areas in her life. “With each song\,” she explains\, “I make an effort to get to the truth about a dynamic or situation with a person in my life. These are just some of the earthly delights that surround her home in Chattanooga and dance through her music. Her debut album\, Goldenrod (2024)\, pays tribute to her favorite native plant’s “charismatic yellow self” and highlights the ways we too can sway through the shoulder seasons of our own lives. As a songmaker\, Rane likes to wade in the undertow\, through the deeper currents of loneliness and longing that churn below the surface of our days. Glide Magazine raves that she’s an “up-and-coming Americana winner along the lines of Sierra Ferrell.” \nRane grew up in the American South\, disconnected from her mother’s Armenian culture\, heritage\, and language. As she sings\, “I don’t know which way to turn or how to be\, there’s too much debris when identities collide.” Often feeling caught between worlds – neither fully Armenian nor totally at ease in Southern American culture – music became a compelling avenue to help make sense of her unique identity. It is no small wonder that her forthcoming album\, Never Turning Back\, orbits themes of kinship\, homesickness\, and the precarity of our human-made environments. Rane is a cartographer of the heart – capturing the many ways it breaks and breaks us open. SUMMARY:The WDVX Big Plate — 9/25 — Still Moves
DESCRIPTION:Still Moves isn’t just another band – they’re a sonic journey born in a basement studio in Clarksville\, Tennessee. What started as a musical friendship between Lucian Greene and Isaac Frost quickly evolved into something magical. They teamed up with Ben Colling and Bo Hunter for the first project. Their debut EP “Henry\,” a heartfelt tribute to their late piano/sax player Henry Rives\, dropped in April 2022 and set the stage for their unique Rock/Americana/Psychedelic sound. Completely self-produced in Isaac’s 1419 records basement studio\, the band’s raw and authentic approach caught people’s attention. \nTheir second EP “Until” followed in March 2023\, showcasing their growing musical chemistry. But the real game-changer came when Cody Kirby (drums) and Dalton Akins (bass) joined the lineup\, transforming Still Moves from a duo into a full-throttle live powerhouse. Their self-titled album\, released on August 30th\, 2024\, captures the electric energy of their expanded lineup – a testament to their journey from basement jam sessions to a dynamic Americana/Rock & Roll band. Cage Riot called the self-titled album\, “a genre-bending masterpiece.” Later that year Michael Davidson joined the group on organ/keyboards\, and completed the band’s full lineup. DESCRIPTION:The Clover Valley Boys are a string band trio performing old time country music.  The band’s lineup features Coleman Akin\, Mo Kinney\, and George Aschmann. \nThey play a variety of instruments including fiddles\, banjo\, guitar\, steel guitar\, and mandolin.  Hailing from Tennessee\, Georgia\, and Virginia respectively\, the members have been playing together in different projects for years and have come together to form a group that engages audiences with harmony singing\, tight instrumentals\, dance numbers\, and an earnest take on an old-timey sound. \n \nThe Co-Conspirators is a Hemmingford\, QC based duo playing folk/singer-songwriter music with elements of country\, rock\, blues\, gospel\, bluegrass\, spiritual\, and general roots music. With heavy emphasis on vocal harmonies\, this duo had been compared to The Weavers\, Ian and Sylvia Tyson and Richard and Linda Thompson. They perform mostly original music along with some traditional and contemporary covers. \nMostly performing as a duo\, they do occasionally add various instruments available to them such as bass\, drums\, percussion\, flute\, clarinet\, lead guitar\, violin\, cello\, harmonica\, banjo\, auto harp\, and vibraphone. \nDescribed as modern day troubadours\, The Co-Conspirators have performed at hundreds of house concerts\, folk societies\, festivals\, seniors and community centres\, bars\, and restaurants. \nThe Co-Conspirators have released 4 albums to date\, “Shadowing the Organ Tuner” (with full band)\, “The Unreliable Narrators” (a duo album of originals)\, and their 3rd album\, “Half a Tank of Gas and a Full Case of Beer” (a Fred Eaglesmith Tribute)\, was release in July 2023. \n“War Is A Racket and Other Irrefutable Truths” is a collection of anti-war\, protest\, social justice\, and labour rights songs. It was released January 2025. \nIn January 2025 they also undertook their first USA tour\, with 17 shows from Washington DC to Texas and points in-between. \nThey continue to tour as much as possible.

Born in Baker\, Louisiana\, Wesley was raised with a rebellious spirit and a love for music inspired by his father’s guitar. By age 15\, he was sneaking into bars to perform with a beat-up six-string and a fire that would soon define his music career. \nHe paved his path in the Baton Rouge blues scene\, performing and touring alongside with legendary figures. He served as Grady Champion’s Music Director for five years. His talent earned him two International Blues Challenge regional victories and a reputation as one of Louisiana’s fiercest young guitarists. \nBut Wesley’s journey took a turn when life’s hardships — including personal battles and deep loss — pushed him toward a new musical path. He is best known for leading the roots rock & blues band The Danger Zone. They have been playing in the Washington DC area for more than 20 years. The band appeared on NPR’s “A Prairie Home Companion” with Garrison Keillor. \nOn September 21\, Karl will release his new single\, I Love You Anyway. Earlier this year he released Time is a Gift and In the Blink of an Eye. Have some fun with The ORNL Summer Sessions! \n  \nShawn Camp began playing guitar as a small child\, growing up outside Perryville\, Arkansas. Mandolin and fiddle followed\, all before he could drive. He remembers dreaming of melodies\, waking up\, and being able to play them. “I just always loved music. It’s been my everything\, really\,” Camp says. “My dad worked out of state\, so we moved around a lot. Whenever we’d go somewhere\, I’d carry a stack of records and a little record player with my guitar. Music was my only constant––that\, and my mom and dad.” \nA prodigy who never knew how to be anything but\, Camp moved to Nashville at 20\, and found early gigs playing with the Osborne Brothers\, Jerry Reed\, Alan Jackson\, Shelby Lynne\, and Trisha Yearwood. Then\, he really started writing––and singing with sly grace\, smooth but earthy. Camp released his first solo album\, Shawn Camp\, on the Reprise (Warner Bros.) label\, but found his biggest success as a songwriter\, penning hits for Willie Nelson\, Garth Brooks\, Brooks & Dunn\, Josh Turner\, Blake Shelton\, George Strait\, and many others. He became a trusted collaborator of John Prine\, Loretta Lynn\, and of course\, Clark\, with whom he wrote constantly\, and toured occasionally. When Clark won a Grammy in 2014 for his final album\, My Favorite Picture of You\, Camp took home a statue as one of the record’s producers. In 2015\, Camp took home another Grammy\, this time\, as lead vocalist for bluegrass supergroup the Earls of Leicester. \nSongwriters seem to flourish on the fertile Oklahoma plains. Woody Guthrie\, Roger Miller\, Leon Russell\, J.J. Cale and Jimmy Webb. Add Verlon Thompson to that list. \nThirty years as a professional songwriter and traveling troubadour serve as credentials. As a solo performer\, and as the trusted sidekick of Texas Americana songwriting icon Guy Clark\, Verlon has viewed the world from stages everywhere from Barcelona to Binger (his hometown in Oklahoma). \nAlong the way Verlon Thompson compositions have been recorded by Jimmy Buffett and Alan Jackson\, Dierks Bentley\, Anne Murray\, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band\, Kenny Rogers\, Randy Travis\, Del McCoury\, Sam Bush\, Trisha Yearwood and many more. \nVerlon has co-produced Guy Clark’s Grammy nominated cd “Cold Dog Soup” as well as “The Dark”\, “Workbench Songs” and “Somedays the Song Writes You”. \nEqually important in his songwriting and live performances\, Verlon’s guitar work cannot go unnoticed.
