SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special - 12/24 - Wyatt Ellis
DESCRIPTION:Born not far from the Great Smoky Mountains\, Wyatt Ellis‘ first recollection of hearing the mandolin was Bobby Osborne’s iconic solo on the Osborne Brothers’ bluegrass classic “Rocky Top.” Hearing the Tennessee bluegrass anthem echo throughout the early years of his childhood is what led Wyatt to set his sights on learning to play mandolin. With his schedule packed with school\, Boy Scouts and team sports\, it was hard to find time for music. \nWhen he was almost 10 years old\, Wyatt talked his dad into buying him a used mandolin so he could learn to play it just like Bobby. Soon\, he began weekly mandolin lessons in his hometown and quickly developed a strong desire to attend local bluegrass jams. He told his non-musical parents that he wanted to play his new mandolin alongside other bluegrass pickers. \nThe COVID lockdown began just as he was forging those real-life musical friendships. Team sports\, local lessons and bluegrass jams came to an abrupt end. At the same time\, festivals and in-person recording sessions suddenly stopped\, parking the most in-demand bluegrass musicians at home. Many of his favorite mandolin players started teaching or simply spending more time connecting within the community online. \nIn the fall of 2020\, Wyatt was chosen by his hero Sierra Hull\, herself a former mandolin prodigy\, for a Tennessee Folklife apprenticeship. Eager to improve under the watch of a true virtuoso\, Wyatt describes those one-on-one tutorials as “working on exactly what I needed to work on at the time. Details. Timing. Tone. Getting all the little things right by slowing down was a really big deal in that situation. Sierra has taken bluegrass mandolin to another dimension and I was excited to start my journey with her. I’ve played my mandolin every day since then.” \nHaving never been a fan of watching television or playing video games\, playing mandolin became Wyatt’s preferred pastime. With no close neighbors and the music world suddenly at his fingertips\, his passion for the instrument grew. As word circulated in the bluegrass community about his accelerated abilities\, Wyatt befriended many of the genre’s top mandolin players through camps\, workshops\, and individual lessons. \nIn October 2022\, Wyatt performed alongside former Bluegrass Boy Peter Rowan and Grammy winner Molly Tuttle at Rowan’s induction into the Bluegrass Hall of Fame. Wyatt was invited by his ultimate mandolin hero\, Marty Stuart\, to help kick off the Grand-Reopening of the Ellis Theater in Philadelphia\, Mississippi. In February 2023\, at 13 years old\, he made his Grand Ole Opry debut appearance with bluegrass duo Dailey & Vincent. Moments after his debut appearance he was jamming backstage with acoustic icons Vince Gill and Mark O’Connor. In March 2023\, Wyatt joined the genre’s newest superstar\, Billy Strings\, to honor Doc Watson at his 100th birthday celebration. The now fourteen-year-old was recently invited to play the iconic Merlefest event Mandolin Mania with five of his mandolin heroes. \nAs a young musician just starting out on his musical journey\, Wyatt has found that the bluegrass community is full of supporters\, kind words\, and encouragement. He has accrued more than 100\,000 followers on combined social media before ever releasing a single.

DESCRIPTION:Hailing from Marshall\, NC\, Christopher M. Caruso isn’t just a bass player and backup singer – he’s a blues-infused whirlwind of musical passion. Whether laying down grooves or harmonizing with soulful swagger\, Christopher’s true magic lies in connecting hearts through the language of music. His journey began in 1989\, cutting his teeth with the East Coast-touring band Chaotic Past. Two CDs and a 45 later\, Christopher’s stage skills were honed to a razor’s edge. Collaborations with the likes of J.C. Tokes\, The Brandon Quinn Trio\, Mitch McConnell and the Senators\, and many more solidified his reputation as a versatile and dependable musician. But Christopher’s soul truly takes flight during solo shows. Slide guitar whispers alongside his six-string\,weaving quirky originals\, classic blues\, and unexpected covers into a tapestry that leaves audiencesbuzzing. And in 2016\, he started a tradition that warms hearts to this day: his annual Christmas show\, a joyful gathering brimming with good cheer and festive spirit.So\, what keeps Christopher hooked on the music train? “The people\,” he says with a grin. “Seeing their faces light up\, sharing the energy in every venue – that’s what fuels my fire.” His mission? To weave bridges with music\, one note at a time\, touching every corner of the world through the power of shared melodies. \n \nZack Miles is a Singer/songwriter with folk\, americana\, and bluegrass influence. SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special - 1/9 - Ray Duncan / Brandon Maddox
DESCRIPTION:Ray Duncan is a Nashville based independent artist. Born in Cambria\, California\, Ray has been performing all her life. Playing her first shows at only 13 years old\, by 16 she had formed the duo Ranchers for Peace with her father\, songwriter Charles Duncan. In 2019 Ray moved to Nashville to find new inroads for her career\, where she now works as a background singer and freelance composer\, in addition to performing as a solo artist. Ray also co-hosts podcast “Book of Jude\,” which is a series of interviews with her mother\, hit songwriter Jude Johnstone\, that tells the story of Johnstone’s career in the music business. \nSince moving to Nashville\, Ray has recorded and released several projects\, including her 2022 single “Don’t Let It Get To You\,” co-written with Johnstone and featuring performances from legendary musicians such as drummer Vinnie Colaiuta\, guitarist David Keary\, and bass player Nick Scott. \nAfter 2 crowd funding campaigns\, Ray is now preparing for the 2025 release of her long anticipated Laundromat EP\, recorded at Starbird Sound with producer Mike Fahey (Phish\, Chris Stapleton). \n \nFrom sharing the stage with superstar\, Brett Eldredge\, as well as acclaimed performances in casinos\, clubs\, and festivals to having original songs featured in movies and appearing on TV and radio shows\, Brandon Maddox\, has quickly established himself as one of Country Music’s rising stars. He was named\, “Monster Truck Artist of the Year” and was both a Josie Award recipient in 2017 for his hit single “Dixie Chaser” as well as the winner of “Song of the Year” in 2019 for his song “Drive Me to Drink.” \nBrandon’s dad schooled him in classic rock\, so it was only natural that when the youngster picked up the guitar and taught himself to play\, he used a Beatle’s songbook. While teaching himself\, he noticed a common thread among the songs—the songs were written by actual members of The Beatles. Brandon wrote his first song at the tender age of 11 and now has an original catalog of over a thousand songs\, a few of which have won awards. After college Brandon moved to Nashville from his hometown near Chattanooga\, TN to pursue his songwriting passion. \nhttps://youtu.be/tpQqaUtQxck?si=bTk4A6u3r_EQZ0iy

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special - 1/16 - Nathan Morgan / MaCartney Reinhardt
DESCRIPTION:Nathan Morgan is carrying on the American music tradition of hard driving\, cranked up country rock music\, with some heartfelt country ballads in the mix! \nPerforming as a solo act and with his four-piece band\, Nathan has played around the southeast for 20+ years. He has shared the stage and/or opened for artists such as ZZ Top\, Marty Stuart\, Lynyrd Skynyrd\, Travis Tritt\, Collective Soul\, Drivin N Cryin\, Blackberry Smoke\, and more. \nNathan just relocated from Atlanta\, Georgia to northeast Tennessee in 2023. The exciting move followed the release of his most recent original music\, “The Memphis Sessions”. This EP was recorded at the legendary Sun Studio in Memphis\, TN and is available on all major streaming services! \n \nNashville country recording artist Macartney Reinhardt is quickly catching the eye of industry executives and music lovers with her powerhouse vocals\, her soulful\, bluesy twang\, and lyrics that come straight from the heart. \nHailing from music royalty\, as a relative of the legendary jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt\, Macartney was exposed to a variety of styles and genres from an early age. The Atlanta\, GA. native was captivated watching her dad perform when she was a toddler\, and started singing along while he played guitar. At just 5 years old she knew she always wanted music at the center of her life. \nThis rising recording artist has performed all over the Southeast in venues both small and large\, from clubs to large outdoor events and music competitions. Macartney was one of just five musicians nominated for Teen Artist of the Year at the 2020 Georgia Country Awards\, which honors the very best country musicians in the state. She performed in front of industry professionals and peers at the event\, known as the “CMAs” of Georgia. Most recently\, Macartney was part of CMA Fest 2023 Fan Fair X Meet and Greet.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Big Plate - 1/31 - Waynestock ’25 Preview – Shayla McDaniel / Medford’s Black Record Collection
DESCRIPTION:Waynestock is a three-day music festival held annually at Relix Variety Theatre in Knoxville\, Tennessee to raise funds for in-need individuals and music-related nonprofit organizations! \nShayla McDaniel is a singer-songwriter\, multi-instrumentalist\, and producer crafting guitar-driven indie pop to soundtrack your life. The Knoxville\, TN-based artist’s music has been featured in MTV’s “Siesta Key\,” Disney+ “Big Shot\,” The CW’s “Nancy Drew” and retail and dining spaces around the world. \nThe laid back artist’s honeyed vocals and indie pop-rock hit that sweet spot between major and minor tonalities with a pan-genre appeal. Pristine vocals\, breezy pop grooves\, big hooks\, and soaring melodies contribute to her pop allure and soulful\, guitar-driven alt-rock sensibility. \nIn a short period of time\, the young artist has garnered prime accolades. She has opened for Joy Oladokun\, performed at Rhythm N’ Blooms Music Festival with the likes of Young the Giant\, Dave Barnes\, Gogol Bordello\, Birds of Chicago\, and others; Sunset on Central; Dogwood Arts Festival; the Waynestock Festival; Women in Jazz Jam Festival; and live on-air at WUTK 90.3 FM\, WDVX 89.9 FM\, and WOZO 103.9 FM\, among others. Shayla has been in Knoxville Music Warehouse’s Top 16 song charts; been voted by fans as Knoxville’s Favorite Band; won numerous Knoxville Music Awards; and earned prestigious awards nominations from CityView Magazine and Knoxnews. \n \n14 years ago this month\, almost to the day\, Medford’s Black Record Collection played its last full-band show. We’re incredibly happy\, and honored\, to be playing at Knoxville’s finest local music festival\, Waynestock\, as our first full-band show since. We can’t think of a better place to be doing it\, or a better lineup of friends and great musicians to be doing it with. On bass\, we’ll have MBRC original Clint Mullican\, and on drums\, our old pal Hunter Deacon. We’ll be dusting off the old tunes\, so we hope to share them with you. Please spread the word\, and come out to this great festival which always supports a good cause\, showcases Knoxville’s talent\, remembers music scene friends we’ve lost\, and serves as the family reunion. You never want to miss Waynestock. \n \n

SUMMARY:Tennessee Shines - 2/5 - American Aquarium\, Lilly Hiatt & Zach Russell
DESCRIPTION:CLICK HERE FOR TICKETS!\nFor nearly two decades\, American Aquarium have pushed toward that rare form of rock-and-roll that’s revelatory in every sense. “For us the sweet spot is when you’ve got a rock band that makes you scream along to every word\, and it’s not until you’re coming down at three a.m. that you realize those words are saying something real about your life\,” says frontman BJ Barham. “That’s what made us fall in love with music in the first place\, and that’s the goal in everything we do.” On their new album The Fear of Standing Still\, the North Carolina-bred band embody that dynamic with more intensity than ever before\, endlessly matching their gritty breed of country-rock with Barham’s bravest and most incisive songwriting to date. As he reflects on matters both personal and sociocultural—e.g.\, the complexity of Southern identity\, the intersection of generational trauma and the dismantling of reproductive rights—American Aquarium instill every moment of The Fear of Standing Still with equal parts unbridled spirit and illuminating empathy. \nRecorded live at the legendary Sunset Sound in Los Angeles\, The Fear of Standing Still marks American Aquarium’s second outing with producer Shooter Jennings—a three-time Grammy winner who also helmed production on 2020’s critically lauded Lamentations\, as well as albums from the likes of Brandi Carlile and Tanya Tucker. In a departure from the stripped-down subtlety of 2022’s Chicamacomico (a largely acoustic rumination on grief)\, the band’s tenth studio LP piles on plenty of explosive riffs and hard-charging rhythms\, bringing a visceral energy to the most nuanced and poetic of lyrics. “In our live show the band’s like a freight train that never lets up\, and for this record I really wanted to showcase how big and anthemic we can be\,” notes Barham\, whose bandmates include guitarist Shane Boeker\, pedal-steel guitarist Neil Jones\, keyboardist Rhett Huffman\, drummer Ryan Van Fleet\, and bassist Alden Hedges. \n \nCLICK HERE FOR TICKETS!\nThe search for answers—where she’s been\, who she’s become\, what it all means—lies at the heart of Hiatt’s striking new album\, Forever. Written and recorded in Hiatt’s new home just outside Nashville\, the collection grapples with growth and change\, escape and anxiety\, self-loathing and self-love. The songs are intensely vulnerable here\, full of diaristic snapshots and deeply personal ruminations\, but they’re also broad invitations to find yourself in Hiatt’s unflinching emotional excavations\, to see your own humanity reflected back in her pursuit of something larger than herself. Hiatt cut the album with her husband\, Coley Hinson\, who produced and played most of the instruments on the record\, and the result is a raw\, unvarnished work of love and trust that walks the line between alt-rock muscle and singer/songwriter sensitivity\, a bold\, guitar-driven\, at times psychedelic exploration of maturity and adulthood from an artist who wants you to know you’re not alone\, no matter how lost you may feel. \n“I think of this album like a hand to hold\,” says Hiatt. “I wanted to open up the door and let people in on what I’ve been going through\, but I also hoped that by telling the truth about the joy and pain and love and grief I’ve experienced\, it might strike a chord with somebody else navigating their way through all those things\, too.” \nBorn in Los Angeles and raised in Tennessee\, Hiatt first earned buzz with a pair of early solo records before breaking out with 2017’s Trinity Lane. Produced by Shovels & Rope’s Michael Trent\, the record helped Hiatt earn dates with the likes of John Prine\, Margo Price\, Drive-By Truckers\, and Hiss Golden Messenger in addition to festival slots everywhere from Pilgrimage to Luck Reunion. NPR called the album “courageous and affecting\,” while The Independent raved that it showcased Hiatt’s “gift for unpicking knotty lyrical themes in a personalised blend of countrified rock music\,” and Rolling Stone hailed it as “the most cohesive and declarative statement of the young songwriter’s career.” Hiatt delivered on the album’s promise with her similarly well-received 2020 follow-up\, Walking Proof\, and\, unable to tour due to the pandemic\, quickly returned to the studio again for 2021’s Lately\, which The Boston Herald said showcased her “knack for plainspoken\, poetic lyrics” and Uncut proclaimed to be “captivating.” \n \nCLICK HERE FOR TICKETS!\nEach year\, thousands of people flock to the city of Nashville with hopes of “making it”. Ironically\, it wasn’t until Zach Russell made the decision to leave Music City\, USA that he inked his first record deal with Thirty Tigers. The drive back home may have only been three hours long\, but Russell’s journey back to old haunts in Eastern Tennessee isn’t quite that cut and dry. \nIn the 7 years preceding that trip down I-40\, there were stints as a manager at a shoe store and a karaoke host. He calloused his hands installing irrigation systems and working as a carpenter. He traveled the US and Europe as Tyler Childers’ merchandise manager and got to witness firsthand what it takes to chase down greatness. Through it all\, one thing that remained constant was his belief that he could chase it down as well. \nMusic has always played a pivotal role in Russell’s life. A background in Baptist and Hymnal music as a youth and a taste for hip-hop\, rock\, and country music informed his musical style between 2016 and 2020 as he found his footing. In 2021 the world received its proper introduction to Zach Russell as a fully formed artist with the release The Creek. This five-song EP proved not only to be a landmark release in Russell’s career\, but with its lyrical depth\, soaring instrumental jams and infectious melodies\, it served as proof that this landmark was merely the first of many to come. \nSince moving home and finding clarity\, the past 18 months have been busy for Russell. He spent those months writing music\, touring with The Alex Leach Band\, and delivering a guest appearance on Adeem the Artist critically acclaimed album\, White Trash Revelry. That wave of momentum has culminated to this moment\, and the release of his highly anticipated full-length debut\, Where the Flowers Meet the Dew. \nOnce again joining forces with up-and-coming producer Kyle Crownover (Adeem the Artist)\, this ten-song effort never takes its foot off the gas pedal. Dominant themes of wrestling with mortality\, pondering reincarnation\, and finding that ever elusive feeling of contentment in this life weave gracefully through.
