SUMMARY:WDVX Summer Nights - 10/8 - Mic Harrison and the High Score / Trisha Gene Brady
DESCRIPTION:I’d rather see Mic Harrison and the High Score perform than just about any band on the planet. \nThat’s not just because Mic and the guys have a couple of road cases full of great songs or they’re journeyman musicians who’ve been a part of some of the best bands to come out of the South. It’s because every time I go to a Mic Harrison and the High Score show\, I know I’m going to walk in and see guys who look like they’re having so much fun on stage that it can’t help but spill out into the audience. I know I’m going to walk out at the end the night feeling better about the world with great rock ‘n’ roll and honky tonk songs playing over and over in my head. \nLead singer and rhythm guitarist Mic Harrison\, lead guitarist Robbie Trosper\, bassist Vance Hillard\, guitarist Kevin Abernathy and drummer Don Coffey\, Jr.\, have a chemistry that can only come from long term friendships and shared experiences. Harrison\, who started his young adulthood working in a saw mill in Bradford\, Tenn.\, a town so small it barely shows up on the map between Memphis and Jackson. He moved to Knoxville in the 1990s to become co-lead singer-songwriter (with Scott Miller) in The V-Roys\, a band that defined “Americana” before it was genre. After that group split\, he teamed with Trosper in the short-lived favorites The Faults and\, later\, teamed with Coffey in the now legendary power pop act Superdrag. When Superdrag ended\, Harrison enlisted established Knoxville rock act The High Score to back up a tour and the chemistry was so good that the partnership never ended. \nIn the past 12 years or so\, Mic and the guys have traveled the country\, performing at festivals from Bonnaroo to Easyriders Rodeos\, headlining bills from concert halls to the stickiest bars\, opening shows for everyone from Billy Joe Shaver to Huey Lewis and the News to ZZ Top\, and recording a terrific single with classic country singer Con Hunley. \nI’ve been lucky enough to experience Mic Harrison and the High Score perform about 50 times. I expect to see them at least 50 more. In the world today\, you need something that’s guaranteed to make you feel good that won’t hurt you – aside from a little soreness from swaying and dancing. \nI consider Mic Harrison and the High Score mental health food. \n– Wayne Bledsoe \n \nWith her former band TGB followed a rigorous road schedule and had many adventures!! Trisha Gene Brady is a roots musician from Knoxville\, TN known best for her seven year run as the female vocalist (guitar\, mandolin\, percussion) of the nationally touring act\, The Black Lillies. Her split from the well known Americana outfit seems to be an open door to the next step in her career.\nShe has been featured in publications including Rolling Stone\, Vanity Fair\, Billboard\, Wall Street Journal\, Consequence of Sound\, Garden & Gun\, Huffington Post\, Relix Magazine\, USA Today\, PASTE Magazine\, No Depression & Country Weekly\, NPR’s Mountain Stage (twice) and five separate PBS concert specials\, a GAC featurette\, Texas Music Scene and a CMT television episode airing nationally.\nTrisha Gene is one of the only independent artists invited to play the Grand Ole Opry more than thirty times (debuted June\, 2011).\nShe has performed at festivals including Bonnaroo Music + Arts\, SXSW\, Americana Music Association’s Americana Fest\, 30-A Songwriter’s Festival\, Country Music Association’s CMA Festival & Fan Fair\, Rochester International Jazz Festival\, Pickathon\, Strawberry Music Festival\, Four Corners Folk Festival\, MerleFest\, Old Settler’s Festival\, The Luck Reunion\, and more.

SUMMARY:WDVX Summer Nights - 9/10 - Jon Stickley Trio / EmiSunshine
DESCRIPTION:Support for WDVX comes from Yee Haw Brewing Company on North Broadway in Knoxville and ORNL Federal Credit Union supporting WDVX Summer Nights… Coming up\, The Jon Stickley Trio and EmiSunshine will perform live Wednesday night September 10th at seven on stage and on your radio! \nBoundary-breaking and genre-defying are handy terms to use in describing musical artists\, but while they can lend a certain cachet to a project\, music that really eludes easy description is actually pretty rare. Still\, if such terms can be applied to any group at all\, the Jon Stickley Trio is at the head of the line for such treatment. For while the music made by guitarist Stickley\, violinist Lyndsay Pruett and percussionist Hunter Deacon contains innumerable influences that dart in and out of a listener’s ear\, its all-instrumental essence is truly unique. And while the Trio’s 2020 debut for Organic Records\, Scripting The Flip\, was a convincing enough depiction of the group’s distinctive identity to earn rave reviews from jazz and Americana publications alike\, their upcoming album\, Meantime’s Up\, serves up compelling proof that they’ve been digging even deeper. \n \nMeet EmiSunshine—a musical phenomenon with a voice as big as her dreams and a spirit that’s impossible to ignore. This rising star has captured hearts around the world with her unique blend of country\, and Americana. \nFrom the Grand Ole Opry\, to releasing 10 albums by the age of 20\, EmiSunshine has proven she’s a force to be reckoned with. The Po Ramblin’ Boys are our special musical guests Wednesday night July 9th at seven with your host Alex Leach. \nAt a time when most people feel constantly distracted by technology and barraged by the news\, authenticity and straightforward honesty are paramount. There’s something about the music of The Po’ Ramblin’ Boys that cuts right through the noise of the world and speaks plainly to the soul. Formed ten years ago in the Smoky Mountains in 2014\, The Po’ Ramblin’ Boys are at once exactly what you would expect and not at all what you would expect from a tattooed East Tennessee Bluegrass outfit. SUMMARY:WDVX Summer Nights - 6/11 - Jim Lauderdale & the Game Changers / Tidalwave Road
DESCRIPTION:Support for WDVX comes from Yee Haw Brewing Company on North Broadway in Knoxville and ORNL Federal Credit Union supporting WDVX Summer Nights… Live Music at Yee Haw. Jim Lauderdale and the Game Changers and Tidalwave Road will perform on June 11th. \nAt any given time\, you’re likely to find Jim Lauderdale making music\, whether he’s laying down a new track in the studio or working through a spontaneous melody at his home in Nashville. And if he’s not actively crafting new music\, he’s certainly thinking about it. “It’s a constant challenge to try to keep making better and better records\, write better and better songs. I still always feel like I’m a developing artist\,” he says. This may be a surprising sentiment from a man who’s won two Grammys\, released 34 full-length albums\, and taken home the Americana Music Association’s coveted Wagonmaster Award. But forthcoming album Game Changer is convincing evidence that the North Carolina native is only continuing to hone his craft. \nOperating under his own label\, Sky Crunch Records\, for the first time since 2016\, Lauderdale recorded Game Changer at the renowned Blackbird Studios in Nashville\, co-producing the release with Jay Weaver and pulling from songs he’d written over the last several years. “There’s a mixture on this record of uplifting songs and\, at the same time\, songs of heartbreak and despair—because that’s part of life as well\,” he says. “In the country song world especially\, that’s always been part of it. That’s real life.” \nLauderdale would know: He’s been a vital part of the country music ecosystem since 1991\, when he released his debut album and began penning songs for an impressively long roster of country music greats. “When I was a teenager wanting to be a bluegrass banjo player\, I never would have imagined that I would get to work with people like Ralph Stanley\, Robert Hunter\, Loretta Lynn\, George Jones\, Emmylou Harris\, Elvis Costello\, Lucinda Williams and John Oates \,” he muses. “Getting to work with them inspires me greatly to this day\, and I know it always will.” \,” he muses. “Getting to work with them inspires me greatly to this day\, and I know it always will.” \nFrom rollicking guitar riffs on “That Kind of Life (That Kind of Day)” to the slow\, sweet harmonies of “I’ll Keep My Heart Open For You\,” Game Changer shows off Lauderdale’s ingenuity as a singer\, songwriter\, and producer—while reestablishing him as one of Americana’s most steadfast champions. “Country music is constantly evolving\, but I’ll always have a soft spot in my heart for steel guitar and a Telecaster\,” he says. “I have done my job on this record if people who love classic country feel like they can put it on\, or have it in their collection\, and it would fit right in.” \nRespecting the past doesn’t mean he’s not breaking new ground. “We’re All We’ve Got\,” a co-write with Mary Gauthier and Jaimee Harris\, offers a timely message about healing torn relationships at home and across the world. And “Friends Again\,” a grinning number about rekindling a friendship\, is fresh and forward-looking. At every turn\, Lauderdale’s collaborative spirit and genuine love for the creative process reveal themselves in thoughtful\, well-crafted songs sure to stand the test of time. “When everything works right\, it’s just magical to be able to hear them back\,” he says. “You feel\, at least for those three-and-a-half minutes\, like life makes sense.” \n \nTidalwave Road is made up of: \nBEN PARKER\nBanjo\, Vocals\nBenjamin Russell Parker grew up in Williamsburg and McKee\, Kentucky and still makes his home in Williamsburg today. \nBen started playing music at age 19\, being heavily influenced by Earl Scruggs\, Ralph Stanley and Dave Evans. As a multi-instrumentalist\, Ben plays Banjo\, Guitar and Fiddle. \nBefore Tidalwave Road was born\, he was a proud member of the ‘Colonel’ Larry Fuller Band. Fuller was a 40-year veteran musician and beloved Kentucky Colonel who was adored far and wide by his fans and sadly passed in 2007. \nAs a founding member of Tidalwave Road\, Ben Parker brings his unique Banjo and vocal stylings to the band along with his good humor. He is a professional Barber by day and is happily married to his lovely wife Trish\, with whom he has two children\, Cole and Landenn. \nBen also loves to kayak\, ride ATV’s\, and try to build fiddles. \nCARLIE PARKER\nMandolin\, Vocals\nCarlie Parker grew up on Tidal Wave Road in Rockholds\, Kentucky and still makes his home in Rockholds today.\nCarlie started playing music at age 8\, and credits his Grandparent and his Uncle Nick as his biggest influences. As a multi-instrumentalist\, Carlie plays Mandolin and Guitar.\nAs a founding member of Tidalwave Road\, and kin to Ben\, Carlie brings his special family blend of harmony to the band. He is a professional bus driver and mower by day and is happily married to his best friend\, with whom he has one son that he is currently teaching how to play music. \nDANIEL PARKER\nBass\nDaniel Parker grew up in Corbin\, Kentucky and still makes his home in Corbin today. \nDaniel started playing music later in life at age 31\, and enjoys a wide range of music from Metallica to John Prine. His favorite all-time Bluegrass artist is Tim O’Brien. Daniel is the backbone to the hard-driving Tidalwave sound with his rock solid bass skills. \nHe manufactures custom cutting tools by day and enjoys drawing and spending time with the love of his life and their poodle that sleeps between them every night. \nROBERT SULFRIDGE\nGuitar\nRobert Sulfridge grew up in Whitley County\, Kentucky and makes his home in Williamsburg\, Kentucky today.\nRobert started playing music at 6 years old\, and was heavily influenced by a diverse list of players including Tony Rice\, Wyatt Rice\, Cody Kilby\, Stevie Ray Vaughn\, Carlos Santana\, BB King and Mike Riddle. He is a multi-instrumentalist\, fluent in Guitar\, Mandolin and Piano. Robert is also the sound technician for the band\, their annual bluegrass festival\, and other events. His open mind and creative vision lend a hand in pushing the boundaries of traditional bluegrass for the band on song selection for recording and stage.\nBy day\, Robert is Vice President of Die Casting Company and also loves camping\, attending live music events\, ‘Mom & Pop’ coffee shops\, all with his wife and best friend\, Jessica. Robert and Jessica have two ‘fur-children\,’ Moose\, a Saint Bernard\, and Max\, a Bernese Mountain Dog. \n \n \n \n
