SUMMARY:Tennessee Shines with The Montvales and Garrett Boys — Live at Bluetick Tavern — 8/19
DESCRIPTION:Tickets Here! \nTennessee Shines returns to Bluetick Tavern and Tap in downtown Maryville on Wednesday\, August 19 at 7:00 PM. This live concert and radio show features The Montvales and Garrett Boys. Doors open at 6:00 PM! All ages are welcome. \nBorn and raised in Knoxville\, TN\, Sally Buice and Molly Rochelson of The Montvales spent much of their formative years busking amidst the Elvis impersonators and musical saw players of the town’s Market Square\, honing their uniquely boisterous harmonies and perfecting the art of people-watching. Some fifteen years later\, the two are still at it-maintaining their study of the robust chaos of the commons as they tour the country playing their descriptive\, textured songs on the self-described “feral outskirts of country music.”  Their lyrics tackle everything from heartbreak to gentrification to abortion rights\, pulling audiences in alongside their well-worn harmonies and nearly telepathic musical connection.   \nIn 2020\, the Montvales recorded their first album Heartbreak Summer Camp in a living room. The stripped-down\, DIY folksongs span their young adulthood\, beginning in their teens and taking them through their mid 20s. Then\, seeking a more polished\, full-band sound\, the duo recorded their next album Born Strangers at Sean Sullivan’s Tractor Shed Studio in Goodlettsville\, TN\, recruiting Nashville stalwart Mike Eli LoPinto (guitarist for Chris Stapleton\, producer of Emily Nenni’s On the Ranch) to produce it.  The record garnered them a dedicated cult following and has been featured by outlets such as Holler\, American Songwriter\, Twangville\, and more.   \nThe Montvales have gone on to share the stage with bands like Willy Tea Taylor and the Fellership\, The Local Honeys\, James McMurtry\, and Mama’s Broke\, and have appeared at festivals such as Healing Appalachia and the Old Quarter Songwriter Festival.  In 2025 they signed with Free Dirt Records to release the single “Loud and Clear”\, with a hint at more new music to come.   \nEvery family has its own unique history\, a timeline fleshed out by memorable characters\, milestone events\, and the stories passed on through the decades that bind it all together. For the Garrett Boys\, a family trio from Overton County in east Tennessee\, their history just happens to lend itself to some excellent Appalachian folk music. \nMade up of brothers Stephen and Russell Garrett\, and Stephen’s son Carter\, the Garrett Boys are rooted\, both musically and physically\, in 500 hilly\, wooded acres that have had a magnetic pull over their family for generations. The men refer to it simply as “The Land\,” and it’s the setting for nearly every one of the 11 songs on It Runs Deep\, the trio’s debut album. \n“About 200 years ago\, some Garrett boys came from North Carolina and settled in that area\,” says Stephen\, who plays acoustic guitar and sings lead in the band. “Some old records say that they acquired land between Mill Creek and Mitchell Creek\, and that’s the property that Russell and I grew up on. Carter will be the ninth generation to live on it.” \nBut while the land is specific to the Garrett Boys\, the album the group wrote about it is universal. Produced by Ray Kennedy (Steve Earle\, Lucinda Williams)\, It Runs Deep contains elements of bluegrass\, folk\, and country\, but refuses to play it safe. It nods to their varied influences\, from Steve Earle and Rodney Crowell to Chris Knight and Hank Williams Jr. \nWith It Runs Deep\, the Garrett Boys memorialize those family stories — for themselves\, for their descendants\, and now for fans of classic American folk music. \n“Our music is about the importance and depth of family and community\,” Stephen says. “It’s a mix of what we have been versus what we can become\, and how we can take the good from all that and build a future.” \nSponsored by Corona and Tennessee Stone!

SUMMARY:Tommy Emmanuel - Live at the Tennessee Theatre - 8/23
DESCRIPTION:Get Tickets Here! \nHailed as “one of the best acoustic guitarists in the world” by NPR’s World Cafe\, Tommy Emmanuel got his start at the age of six\, when he first began touring his native Australia with his family’s band. As a teenager\, he earned a reputation as a highly sought after sideman and session player\, and by his early twenties\, Emmanuel was playing on chart-topping hits and performing with acts like Air Supply and Men at Work. Inspired in part by his hero\, Chet Atkins (who would later become a friend\, mentor\, and collaborator)\, Emmanuel stepped out on his own as a solo artist in 1979\, releasing the first in a string of acclaimed instrumental albums that would make him an unlikely celebrity in his home country and beyond.

SUMMARY:WDVX Summer Nights - 9/9 - The Jason Carter Band / The Asheville Mountain Boys
DESCRIPTION:WDVX Summer Nights\nWednesday\, September 9\, 2026 | Doors 6:00 PM | Show 7:00 PM\nYee-Haw Brewing\, Knoxville\, TN\nFREE | All Ages \nWDVX is proud to present another night of free live music on the big stage at Yee-Haw Brewing for the 2026 Summer Nights concert series! \n  \nIn Lloyd\, Kentucky\, on U.S. 23\, there’s a sign on the Country Music Highway dedicated to renowned fiddler Jason Carter. It was placed there because of his other accomplishments—the Grammy awards\, the worldwide tours\, and the many other accolades he’s earned through his music. But for Carter\, joining the legendary names honored on that stretch of highway just might mean the most. “There’s a certain sound that’s up there that you just don’t hear anywhere else\,” he says. “I think that played a big part in how I sound today.” \nTrue to those Kentucky roots\, Carter continues to pour all he has back into bluegrass. For thirty years\, he has been the fiddle player for the Del McCoury Band—the most awarded group in bluegrass history. He’s won three Grammy awards\, including 2018’s “Best Bluegrass Album” with the Travelin’ McCourys\, of which he is a founding member. And he’s taken home five IBMAs for “Fiddle Player of the Year\,” a staggering number that isn’t quite so crazy once you realize just how many bluegrass greats have turned to Carter for collaboration. \nAs a fiddler\, Carter has been featured on albums by Steve Earle\, Ricky Skaggs\, Dierks Bentley\, Charlie Daniels\, Vince Gill\, Asleep at the Wheel\, and many more\, all in addition to his tireless touring and recording with Del as well as the Travelin’ McCourys. On Carter’s forthcoming solo album\, Lowdown Hoedown\, listeners may recognize instrumental contributions from such legends as Jerry Douglas or Sam Bush alongside vocals from young trailblazers like Sarah Jarosz or Billy Strings. This time\, though\, Carter is singing lead. \n  \nBy their name\, you know where they are from\, and by their sound\, you know what they are about. The Asheville Mountain Boys are on a mission to capture not just the style but the spirit of traditional bluegrass. Asheville\, NC has long been known for great music and its roots in bluegrass go back to the founding of the genre (Bill Monroe’s first broadcast performance as the Bluegrass Boys was at Asheville radio station WWNC in 1938) A group that firmly stakes its claim to the tradition of the music from the area\, The Asheville Mountain Boys spring onto the scene with a thought\, ”What happened to bluegrass?” It’s not a disparaging one that condemns current styles in the genre but rather asks\, “Why do we love this music in the first place” and answers with an approach that is true to the originators of the genre in the sense of both style and philosophy. Bluegrass is raw emotion\, excitement\, drive\, and authenticity. It is not sanitized or compromised but a reflection of the lives of those who play it. It’s storytelling that follows a throughline of tradition. \n  \nThanks to our sponsors: Yee-Haw Brewing\, ORNL Federal Credit Union\, and Garza Law. \n

SUMMARY:J2B2 (John Jorgenson Bluegrass Band) — Clayton Center — 9/15
DESCRIPTION:Tickets Here! \nJ2B2 is an all-star bluegrass supergroup featuring four legendary\, award-winning musicians – John Jorgenson on acoustic guitar\, mandolin and vocals; Herb Pedersen on banjo\, acoustic guitar and vocals; Mark Fain on bass; and Patrick Sauber on acoustic guitar and vocals – delivering bluegrass like no one has ever heard it before. The band’s undeniable live shows have received stellar reviews and have the bluegrass world buzzing. The four combine forces to form a spot-on union of impeccable musicianship\, incomparable songwriting\, incredible harmony vocals (a fresh twist combining bluegrass with elements of West Coast folk rock) and seasoned showmanship. This is the “high lonesome sound” of American roots music at its finest. \nJorgenson and Pedersen are founders (with Chris Hillman) of the formative country rock group Desert Rose Band. After working as a freelance musician in Southern California\, Jorgenson met Hillman and soon formed the Desert Rose Band. In 1990\, Jorgenson went on to found the Hellecasters and toured with Elton John’s band for six years. Artists ranging from Barbra Streisand to Bonnie Raitt to Earl Scruggs have sought out Jorgenson’s guitar work. Jorgenson portrayed Django Reinhardt in the Hollywood feature film Head in the Clouds. In 2008\, Jorgenson won a Grammy for Best Country Instrumental with Brad Paisley and was nominated for Best Bluegrass Album with Earl Scruggs. \nHerb Pedersen was a member of legendary bluegrass band The Dillards as well as bluegrass super-group Old and In the Way. A sought-after singer and musician\, he has worked with such music legends as Chris Hillman\, Earl Scruggs\, Gram Parsons\, Emmylou Harris\, Tony Rice\, Dan Fogelberg\, Stephen Stills\, Linda Ronstadt\, Kris Kristofferson\, John Prine\, Jackson Browne and John Denver. \nMark Fain toured and recorded as bass player for Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder for 13 years. He’s toured and recorded with the Dixie Chicks\, Alan Jackson\, Travis Tritt\, Dwight Yoakam\, Allison Krauss and Dolly Parton\, as well as producing many artists in jazz\, country\, bluegrass and gospel genres. \nPatrick Sauber is a multi-instrumentalist who has quickly made a name for himself in the world of bluegrass and old time music. Equally adept on guitar\, mandolin and banjo\, Sauber has toured with Peter Rowan and Laurie Lewis and appeared on screen in “The Mighty Wind.” \nJ2B2’s debut album\, From The Crow’s Nest\, was recorded in Sheryl Crow’s home barn studio in Nashville\, Tennessee. The album was recently released as part of a John Jorgenson limited edition\, 3-CD box set called DIVERTUOSO (Cleopatra Records)\, which has received vast critical acclaim. DIVERTUOSO includes three new distinct albums by Jorgenson: J2B2 – From The Crow’s Nest; John Jorgenson Quintet – Returning (gypsy jazz); and John Jorgenson – Gifts From The Flood(instrumental electric guitar). \nIn addition to recording their first album as a group\, J2B2 has played several major tour dates over the course of the past two and a half years\, including tours of Norway and the UK\, performances at the annual RockyGrass Festival in Lyons\, Colorado; the Joe Val Festival in Framingham\, Massachusetts; and headlining the Guitar Town Festival in Copper Mountain\, Colorado\, three years in a row. J2B2 made its Grand Ole Opry debut in October 2013 and has returned several times to the Opry since. \nJ2B2 has created quite a buzz\, and The International Bluegrass Music Association is among the many giving the newly formed band’s live performance high marks. In a review\, the IBMA noted\, “There was warmth\, and storytelling\, and lots of laughter as this fresh band of legends made their debut…but with their expertise combined\, you would think they had been playing in this configuration for years.” \nYes! Weekly in Greensboro\, NC has noted of J2B2: “Expect fireworks and amazing playing from some of the best string players in the world.” \nLearn more at johnjorgenson.com.

SUMMARY:Summer Sessions - 9/19 - Shawn Camp / Verlon Thompson / Madelyn Tallent
DESCRIPTION:The event is free\, and takes place at the Museum of Appalachia in Clinton\, TN! Have some fun with The ORNL Summer Sessions! \n  \nShawn Camp began playing guitar as a small child\, growing up outside Perryville\, Arkansas. Mandolin and fiddle followed\, all before he could drive. He remembers dreaming of melodies\, waking up\, and being able to play them. “I just always loved music. It’s been my everything\, really\,” Camp says. “My dad worked out of state\, so we moved around a lot. Whenever we’d go somewhere\, I’d carry a stack of records and a little record player with my guitar. Music was my only constant––that\, and my mom and dad.” \nA prodigy who never knew how to be anything but\, Camp moved to Nashville at 20\, and found early gigs playing with the Osborne Brothers\, Jerry Reed\, Alan Jackson\, Shelby Lynne\, and Trisha Yearwood. Then\, he really started writing––and singing with sly grace\, smooth but earthy. Camp released his first solo album\, Shawn Camp\, on the Reprise (Warner Bros.) label\, but found his biggest success as a songwriter\, penning hits for Willie Nelson\, Garth Brooks\, Brooks & Dunn\, Josh Turner\, Blake Shelton\, George Strait\, and many others. He became a trusted collaborator of John Prine\, Loretta Lynn\, and of course\, Clark\, with whom he wrote constantly\, and toured occasionally. When Clark won a Grammy in 2014 for his final album\, My Favorite Picture of You\, Camp took home a statue as one of the record’s producers. In 2015\, Camp took home another Grammy\, this time\, as lead vocalist for bluegrass supergroup the Earls of Leicester. \nSongwriters seem to flourish on the fertile Oklahoma plains. Woody Guthrie\, Roger Miller\, Leon Russell\, J.J. Cale and Jimmy Webb. Add Verlon Thompson to that list. \nThirty years as a professional songwriter and traveling troubadour serve as credentials. As a solo performer\, and as the trusted sidekick of Texas Americana songwriting icon Guy Clark\, Verlon has viewed the world from stages everywhere from Barcelona to Binger (his hometown in Oklahoma). \nAlong the way Verlon Thompson compositions have been recorded by Jimmy Buffett and Alan Jackson\, Dierks Bentley\, Anne Murray\, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band\, Kenny Rogers\, Randy Travis\, Del McCoury\, Sam Bush\, Trisha Yearwood and many more. \nVerlon has co-produced Guy Clark’s Grammy nominated cd “Cold Dog Soup” as well as “The Dark”\, “Workbench Songs” and “Somedays the Song Writes You”. \nEqually important in his songwriting and live performances\, Verlon’s guitar work cannot go unnoticed. His guitar can be heard on recordings by Restless Heart\, Pam Tillis\, and many more\, including\, and especially Guy Clark. \n  \nMadelyn Tallent is a singer/songwriter particularly loving the folk/Americana side of country and some southern rock. \n  \nSupport for WDVX comes from ORNL Federal Credit Union!
