This day Miss Lynn will be joining us! \nSome Very Good Words to Describe Miss Lynn: \nIDEALISTIC: On the day 9-year old Lynn Hickernell was selected as captain of a gym class kickball team\, she knew just what she would do: the first members chosen for her team would be the classmates who\, like her\, were usually picked last. As the teams assembled\, she ignored the quizzical facial expressions and continued to select smaller\, less-coordinated 4th graders\, instead of the stronger\, faster students who quickly made up the opposing team. She knew that her team might not be obvious victors\, but if they worked together\, they could show the other team what they could do–which turned out to be lose. Badly. By a score of approximately 25 to 0. And while it wasn’t much fun to lose that spring morning\, many years later it made a good story. \nUNPRETENTIOUS: Miss Lynn knows we are all still learning (she even wrote a song about it)\, so she’s not worried about telling stories to try and make herself look cool. The fact that she thinks being cool is overrated is one of the driving forces behind the music she makes and The Good Words Podcast. \nZEALOUS: She loves so many things! Music! Doughnuts! The color yellow! And WORDS! She loves words so much that she created a whole podcast about them. DESCRIPTION:East Tennessee native Sarah Pirkle is a multi-instrumentalist\, music instructor\, and songwriter. She has been teaching private lessons to kids of all ages for nearly 30 years. \nShe is a 2021 recipient of the South Arts Folk & Traditional Arts Master Artist Fellowship\, and also was inducted into the East Tennessee Writers Hall of Fame. She was a songwriting instructor at acclaimed Steve Kaufman’s Acoustic Camp in 2022. Sarah is the program director and fiddle instructor for the Smoky Mtn. Affiliate of Junior Appalachian Musicians at the Great Smoky Mtn. Heritage Center in Townsend\, TN. She has recorded multiple albums with her husband Jeff Barbra\, and on her own.

He also teaches musicology at the University of Tennessee and is a teaching artist in the schools. \nHe is\, in part\, cut from the clothe of the likes of Pete Seeger and John McCutcheon with a passion for American folk music and a desire to play music that brings people together. He also loves rock ‘n roll\, world music\, and writing his own songs. \nHis family shows range from deep dives into the hollers of Appalachia to trips around the world to romps through fun and educational original songs. While guitar and banjo are always on hand\, you may also catch him playing mandolin\, piano\, dulcimer\, jaw harp\, hand drums\, spoons\, and more. His shows are participatory at every turn – whether it’s singing or banging along\, performing motions to go along with songs\, or helping to make-up songs on the spot. And while you’re having fun\, he’ll slip in some tidbits about the history of the instruments\, the development of musical styles\, and basic music education. \nSean has over twelve albums to his credit\, including three records for kids. His most recent family recording\, Earworm\, won a National Parent’s Choice Award\, a National Parenting Products Award and received honorable mention from the national Fids and Kamily Music Awards. The album includes nine original songs\, four covers\, and appearances by Grammy-nominated Molly Ledford and well-known children’s artist Billy Jonas.
