SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special — 8/27 — Jennifer Alvarado / Maynard and the Musties
DESCRIPTION:Jennifer Alvarado is redefining what it means to be a country artist in today’s music scene. With a sound that fuses the heartfelt storytelling of 90s country with the raw\, unfiltered honesty of alternative rock\, her music has been described as “Deana Carter meets Alanis Morissette.” But Jennifer isn’t just another artist blending genres—she’s a truth-teller\, a fighter\, and a voice for those who have ever felt out of place. Her songs are unflinchingly personal\, yet universally relatable\, tackling love\, loss\, trauma\, and redemption with a fearless honesty that sets her apart. \nBorn and raised in Hickory\, North Carolina\, Alvarado’s love for music was sparked at the age of four when her grandfather first placed a guitar in her hands. Growing up\, she found her voice singing in church and school performances\, but a devastating loss and relentless bullying in middle school silenced her for years. While others saw her talent\, she struggled with crippling performance anxiety\, choosing instead to write in secret. It wasn’t until her mid-teens\, when she picked up the guitar again and began leading worship\, that she slowly reclaimed her confidence. \nAlvarado’s path to music wasn’t a straight shot. Despite earning a music scholarship\, she ultimately pursued a degree in Political Science and Family Ministries\, preparing for a future in law and ministry. She worked as an Intellectual Property Paralegal\, led worship at two churches\, and taught guitar and ukulele on the side. But music never stopped calling. In 2020\, facing a crossroads\, she decided to take a chance — submitting her music to Indie Star Radio. The response was immediate and overwhelming\, leading to her being named Country Artist of the Year in 2021. From that moment\, there was no turning back. \nSince then\, Jennifer has become one of the most relentless independent artists in country music\, performing over 200 shows a year across the country. She’s played legendary venues like The Viper Room\, intimate clubs on the California coast\, and countless stages across NC\, TN\, GA\, VA\, SC\, CT\, KY\, and TX. Her goal? To play all 50 states and bring her music to international audiences. While she’s been told she’s “not redneck enough” for country music and “too old” to chase a dream\, she refuses to let the industry define her. Instead\, she writes and sings on her own terms\, creating music that resonates with those searching for something deeper than another whiskey-soaked party anthem. \nBeyond the music\, Jennifer is deeply passionate about using her platform to make a difference. She is actively involved in Celebrate Recovery\, prison ministry\, and organizations supporting women overcoming addiction and homelessness. She volunteers at various local recovery based ministries in North Carolina\, Tennessee Oncology in Nashville\, and Meals on Wheels.  Jennifer Alvarado is more than a musician — she is a storyteller\, an advocate\, and proof that resilience and faith can carve out a space where none seemed to exist. She isn’t chasing fame or fortune. She’s chasing meaning\, moments\, and the chance to remind others that their voice\, their dreams\, and their stories matter. \n \nMaynard and the Musties will perform as well!

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special — 8/24 — Dan Raza / Sam Mooney
DESCRIPTION:PLUCKED while still a student to tour with Joan Armatrading\, and championed by Neil Young on his ‘Living With War’ website\, Dan Raza has spent the first chapter of his career weaving folk troubadour magic around the clubs and halls of the UK and Europe while quietly building a reputation as one of the UK’s best-kept musical secrets. \nWith two critically-acclaimed albums under his belt\, the singer-songwriter\, whose roots lie in folk\, Americana and lyrical pop balladry\, has won support along the way from some of the biggest names in folk music\, such as Rodney Crowell (“great voice and fine arranging sensibilities”)\, Tom Paxton (“killer songs”) and John McCutcheon (“one of my favourite discoveries of recent years”)\, and has long been tipped for wider mainstream recognition. \nNow with the release of his third LP –  Wayfarer – that could happen. While the core elements of his music remain rooted in the troubadour tradition\, the album’s eclectic mix of styles – ranging from soul\, folk\, blues\, country\, Tin Pan Alley\, and Britpop – betoken a wider appeal. With shades of Jackson Browne\, Bruce Springsteen\, Roy Orbison and Bill Withers\, Raza’s latest offering could well be the one to reach a mainstream audience. \n \n“My name is Sam Mooney. I’m a musician from Mississippi\, and I’m lucky enough to have the privilege of making music for you. \nFor as long as I can remember\, few things have brought me as much joy as music. Whether it’s going to a show\, playing piano\, or jamming to music in the car with friends\, I just love it. Naturally\, a life working in the music industry is the dream I decided to chase! \nOver the last several years\, I’ve spent most of my free time on the road playing shows. In that time\, I’ve been blessed with some amazing opportunities. I’ve gotten to open for and share the stage with some of my favorite bands and musicians\, record and release three projects\, and travel around the country performing. Most importantly\, however\, I’ve gotten make countless new friends on the journey. \nMy hope is to write music that will speak into your life. Music that will bring you joy. Music that will be a soundtrack to whatever lies ahead on your journey. My goal is to put on fun and exciting shows that will allow you to escape into a special musical experience and make great memories. Hopefully\, I’ll even get to meet you at a show sometime! \nThere’s so much more I could say\, but I’ll leave the conversation with you to be continued in person or on social media. My links can be found at the bottom of the page! \nThanks again for being here. It’s only because of you that I get to make music.”

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special — 8/22 — Mason Cole / Stefani Morton
DESCRIPTION:Born and raised in Shelby\, North Carolina\, Mason Cole’s musical journey began at age eleven with a Christmas guitar and a head full of curiosity. He spent his early days glued to YouTube\, teaching himself the riffs that lit his imagination on fire. By twelve\, he’d enrolled in a junior high guitar class—mostly\, as he puts it\, “an excuse to play guitar during school hours.” Already ahead of the curve\, Mason quickly found himself drawn to something deeper: songwriting. \n“I grew up riding shotgun with my dad\, listening to Willie Nelson\, George Jones\, and Keith Whitley everywhere we went. Those were my heroes before I even knew what that meant. Later on\, I discovered Americana and Red Dirt—Jason Isbell\, Sturgill Simpson\, Tyler Childers—and it was like finding a new branch of the same family tree.” \nGrounded\, determined\, and unafraid of hard work\, Mason spends his days with Simmons Structural Movers\, helping his father relocate houses and mobile homes. That work ethic carried naturally into his music. At fifteen\, he began crafting his first project\, Lonesome Again\, recorded entirely in a makeshift “poor man’s studio” he and his father built from carpet padding and insulation behind their home. Mason recorded\, mixed\, and mastered all fifteen original tracks himself—a testament to his drive and resourcefulness. \n\n\nAs his career gained momentum\, Mason began sharing festival stages with artists he once looked up to from afar\, including Shenandoah\, Lainey Wilson\, Corey Smith\, and more. In 2023—during the final week of his high school career—he performed a 10-show residency at the MGM in Las Vegas\, a defining showcase that highlighted his fast-rising trajectory. Later that same year\, at just eighteen\, he signed his first record deal with Santa Anna/Sony Music\, marking a major milestone and solidifying his emergence as a standout voice in modern country and Americana. \nWith his band The Hellbenders\, Mason Cole steps into a louder\, more rock-driven chapter. The new album brings grit\, energy\, and a fresh edge while staying true to his roots. \n \nStefani Morton is a singer-songwriter\, visual artist\, actor\, and former educator from South Carolina. Now residing in Nashville\, Stefani is an active member of ASCAP\, NSAI\, ISSA and AMA. Her recent song releases\, ‘Hey Boy’ and ‘Man Crush\,’ were featured in the March/April 2024 issues of Lazie Indie Magazine. Stefani has also been featured in Canvas Rebel Magazine and Nashville Voyager. She was recently nominated for the Marquis 2024 Who’s Who Directory and has appeared in music videos for emerging pop/country artists Shaboozey and Dax. Following a near-fatal bout with sepsis in August 2023\, Stefani relocated to Nashville just eight weeks later. Despite overcoming significant health challenges\, including a year on crutches and canes\, she performed over 100 shows in Nashville in 2024. Stefani recently underwent successful hip replacement surgery at Vanderbilt\, where the infection had spread. She is fully recovered and enjoys creating art and calling Nashville home. Notably\, she is a distant cousin of Patsy Cline\, and her great-grandfather\, Bradley\, was a fiddler in the Buffalo Bill Cody Show. \nSince moving to Nashville\, Stefani has made notable accomplishments in the acting world. She has appeared in music videos with well-known entertainers such as Shaboozey and Dax. Her role as a widow in Dax’s Lonely Dirt Road Alonehas reached over 40 million views. \nShe has also been featured in films directed by Ricky Burkell\, including The Freak Off and Dating My Past\, now streaming on Prime Video\, Apple TV\, and YouTube. \nIn addition\, Stefani has worked in commercials for companies such as Bentley Pontoons and Brookdale Senior Living Community Centers\, among others.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special — 8/20 — Becca Tremmel
DESCRIPTION:Becca Tremmel: \n“So\, I was born in Hackensack\, NJ in 1994. I am the middle child of three.  My big sister is my role model and she currently studying fashion (and she’s sort of perfect)\, and my little brother is a newly engaged\, skiing obsessed hooligan who looks exactly like me. My family moved to Sundance\, UT when I was four. I went to the Sundance Mountain School and spent most of my time hiking Mount Timpanogos and learning about all about wildlife. We technically didn’t have a “math class” but please ask me anything about owls\, elk\, or mountain lions. I probably most definitely know the answer… unlike math. I spent hours and hours riding my horse\, Jazzie; hiking and skiing that mountain with my late\, great Bernese Mountain Dog\, Cassie. \nAnd then\, of course\, there was music at the crazy young age of five I began to create and memorize melodies and lyrics and started to understand song structure. My favorite singers were Hannah Montana and Avril Lavigne (naturally) but honestly my world was shook the moment I heard “Teardrops on my Guitar” by Taylor Swift. I was sold. I wanted to be a songwriter. \nI started taking drum lessons at  six and continued until I realized that writing and melodies were more my thing. I wanted to tell stories so I started learning how to play guitar\, taking voice lessons and writing in my journal.  At 15 I wrote my first song\, “Maybe.”  It was a song about a boy who broke my heart. Typical. \nWhen I was about 10 years old The Bluebird Cafe started visiting the Sundance Resort during the Summertime. I was absolutely wonderstruck by these legends who from a magical and must-be mythical place called\, Nashville. Also\, they were visiting MY mountain all the way out in Utah. The Bluebird inspired me to pursue my passion of writing songs and telling stories and I set my sights on Nashville.  Along the way I attended a summer clinic at the Berklee College of Music in Boston and was then accepted to the songwriting program and the voice program\, but I knew Nashville was my destination.  Now I am a graduate from Belmont University’s songwriting program in Nashville. I spent 2019 sailing around the world as a cruise ship musician which was WILD\, but I found my way back to Nashville. \nAfter returning from the 7 seas I decided to really pursue the whole artist thing. I started playing full band shows around Nash with my all female band !! I put out a couple of songs\, my first music video and I even started to develop my team. It’s been an amazing journey and yet I only feel like it’s the beginning. \nI hope to be here for a long\, long time. Nashville is the greatest town in the world.  I love playing at venues around town and can’t believe the insanely talented people I am meeting. \nWhen I am not singing and playing you can find me riding horses\, shooting arrows\, spelunking\, skiing\, rescuing wildlife\, having earnest conversations with my cats\, watching my talented friends play music around town or running a coffee shop.”

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special — 8/15 — Trey Hedrick / Jeff BearCat Bunch
DESCRIPTION:Trey Hedrick is a modern Appalachian singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist whose sound blends Appalachian folk\, Americana\, and blue-collar country. Deeply rooted in the storied hills of southeastern Ohio along the West Virginia border\, his music is as textured and layered as the region he calls home. Drawing from the landscape and lineage that shaped him\, Trey writes with a deep reverence for generational memory\, places\, and the stories that define us. \nThat storytelling comes into full focus on his forthcoming debut album\, Sing Appalachia\, out Friday\, October 17. Recorded in May 2025 at the Tractor Shed in Nashville with GRAMMY-winning producer and engineer Sean Sullivan (Sturgill Simpson\, Tyler Childers\, John Prine)\, the record is a testament to Trey’s belief in the power of place and honest songwriting. It also features a special guest appearance by one of Trey’s longtime heroes\, Tim O’Brien — a full-circle moment for an artist who grew up studying his records. \nRaised in a proud\, working-class family where music was as natural as breathing\, Trey’s earliest memories involve instruments constantly moving through the room — a guitar\, a mandolin\, a fiddle — always in someone’s hands. His grandfather\, a retired coal miner and a well-regarded local musician\, had “such a rich and textured voice and an ability to make anything his\,” Trey recalls. “Don’t just play it — mean it\, make it yours\,” his grandfather would say. That legacy left its mark. \nThough Trey spent years as a guitarist and mandolin player\, it wasn’t until recently that he stepped forward as a songwriter and solo artist. “I never wanted to be someone who just talked about doing things and never actually did\,” he says. “There were a lot of those guys where I grew up\, and it scared the hell out of me.” His songs reflect that urgency and humility — written to feel honest\, never traditional just for tradition’s sake. “I’m not here to cosplay Appalachia\,” he adds. “If it sounds traditional one day and something else the next\, that’s what came out when I picked up the guitar.” \nEven as his sound sits comfortably within Appalachian and Americana traditions\, there’s a subtle freshness to it. Trey developed a deep love for flatpicking early on\, drawn to the drive and precision of players like Clarence White\, Tony Rice\, and Doc Watson. His influences stretch far and wide — from bluegrass trailblazers like Tim O’Brien and Ralph Stanley to the powerhouse blues vocals of Susan Tedeschi\, with nods to Aretha Franklin and Bobby Bland\, and even ‘90s R&B and hip-hop woven in. “If something swings or grooves a little\, that’s probably why\,” he laughs. “I’d like to think all those influences come across in my debut album — that was kind of the point anyway.\n \nJeff BearCat Bunch: A behind the scenes kind of guy for a number of years. \nWorking with other artists as a tour manager\, roadie\, merch guy\, driver\, fan\, friend\, etc… \nhoning in on the craft of songwriting and story telling. \nIndependent and nationally touring singer/songwriter/storyteller\, \nOriginally from Knoxville\,TN. \nBased in Nashville\, TN. \nOver the past few years BC has shared stages with names like Scott H. Biram\, Wayne “The Train” Hancock\, Kade Hoffman\, Josh Morningstar\, Jesse Dayton\, Billy Don Burns\, Cass Jones\, Ellis Bullard\, Rob Leines\, Sunny Sweeney\, Kayla Ray\, Gus Clark\, Alex Williams\, Justin Wells\, \nWes Shipp\, Casper McWade\, Dallas Burrow\, Dallas Moore\, Taylor Hunnicutt\, Elizabeth Cook\, Silverada among a ton of others \nopening shows/touring with\, tour managing\, special guest appearance\, festivals\, etc. \nHas been on the OUTLAW COUNTRY CRUISES put on by Sirius XM outlaw country station \nSharing the bill with acts like \nBlackberry Smoke\, Steve Earle\, Lucinda Williams\, Roger Alan Wade\, Elizabeth Cook\, Mojo Nixon\, Jesse Dayton\, Scott H. Biram\, Dale Watson\, Ray Wylie Hubbard\, Supersuckers\, 49 Winchester\, The Mavericks\, Nikki Lane\, Sarah Gayle Meech\, Vandoliers\, Joshua Ray Walker\, Silverada\, etc. \nWell traveled\, well versed\, and well taught rambler \nout living the words of the songs he sings.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special — 8/11 — Evie Andrus and Friends
DESCRIPTION:Evie Andrus has spent most of her adult life adding tasty licks to other people’s projects\, adding just the right ingredient to make a piece of music sound its best. With the release of her first album under her own name\, “Evie’s Great Adventure\,” the fiddler/vocalist ready to deliver the main course. \nThe new album is flat-out feel-good music delivered with the same heart and soul that’s made Evie a popular performed all across the Southeast. \nMaybe you caught her bands Barefoot Sanctuary or Buffalo Fiasco\, or heard her backing up renowned cellist Dave Eggar\, irreverent singer-songwriter Roger Alan Wade\, or performing at the Big Ears Festival with improvisational great Lonnie Holley\, or maybe you spotted her backing up Foreigner on a short tour. There’s also the possibility that you heard her music on the HBO series “The Outsider” or saw her appearance on “American Ninja Warrior.” \nBorn in Fargo\, N.D. and raised in Minot\, N.D.\, Evie began playing fiddle at six years old in her father’s band Crossroads\, but she was already a stage veteran. She first performed on stage at the age of 3\, blowing a train whistle\, on one of her father’s songs. \nWhen Evie was in the 4th grade\, her father started a family band called Family Ties\, which included her father on banjo and her brother Joe on bass. Mom ran sound for the group. \n“Our thing was to wear funny ties\,” says Evie. “My favorite was a rubber Swiss cheese tie … In the summer\, we were out and about. We played a lot around North Dakota\, South Dakota\, Minnesota and Canada\, Good Sam conventions and re-enactments\, fur trade re-enactments.” \nWho even knew there were “fur trade” re-enactments? \nAll through high school\, Evie performed in bluegrass bands and her high school orchestra\, but she didn’t have a lot in common with her classmates. \n“I grew up in a very bluegrass-centric family\,” she says. “Plus\, we had no TV. My entertainment was listening to (vintage radio shows) ‘Sherlock Holmes\,’ ‘Dragnet’ and ‘Inner Sanctum.’” \nEvie later attended North Dakota State University\, majoring in athletic training\, and playing in a group called Ironwood and\, later\, Sisters of the North on the side. It was an encounter with East Tennessee bluegrass act Blue Moon Rising that made Evie decide to move to East Tennessee. She moved to Johnson City\, Tenn.\, and landed a scholarship in the East Tennessee State University bluegrass program. \n“My first fiddle teacher there was (former Bluegrass Boys’ fiddler) Tater Tate\,” says Evie. “I couldn’t believe I was getting a scholarship to take lessons from Tater Tate!” \nWhile in Johnson City she worked at the Acoustic Coffee House\, working as a server and making music. She was a regular at late-night jam sessions and later became a favorite player to accompany singer-songwriters. \n“It was a different approach to music than what I had done before\,” says Evie. “It was kind of freeing in a way.” \nAfter a graduation\, Evie returned to North Dakota for few years before taking a music job in with the  Hatfield & McCoy Dinner Show in Pigeon Forge\, Tenn. \nAfter a year and a half of dinner shows\, Evie leaned into teaching and playing with a variety of bands and musicians and then founded Barefoot Sanctuary\, which later became Buffalo Fiasco. A gig with Lonnie Holley at the Big Ears Festival led to Evie getting a call from HBO to be part of the limited series “The Outsider.” \n“The scene at the festival with the fiddle tunes\, that’s me!” says Evie. “I’m blurry in the background\, but it was really awesome.” \nAs a side person\, Evie says she’s always known where she fits. \n“I call myself a Jell-O player\,” says Evie. “There’s always room for Jell-O. It fills in all the cracks.” \nWith the release of “Evie’s Great Adventure\,” though\, she knows where she fits as well. \n“I’m really excited to get my true musical voice out more\,” says Evie. “In an odd way\, it took the pandemic to make me take time to find my voice. Now I want to share my love of music and adventure. It’s not earth shattering. It’s something people can put on and just have a great afternoon.”

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special — 8/10 — Sam Kucera / Songs of the Folk
DESCRIPTION:Sam Kucera: Singer/Songwriter \n \nA.T. and Lauren Cason were born in different parts of the Carolinas and met while studying music in college in the early 2000’s—they have been singing and playing together ever since. Both hold Master’s degrees in music yet maintain the heritage of their place and people\, having grown up in musical families that embodied the traditions of the area. The combination of their training and the roots of their Carolina Piedmont upbringing helped the couple naturally craft a unique and authentic American folk music sound that’s as current and innovative as it is steeped in the folk\, country\, and blues music influences of the American South. The sound of Songs of the Folk is aptly described by Folk and Honey\, one of the UK’s leading folk music publications: \n“Their original songs have a slick\, contemporary musicianship underlying them..their tasteful instrumentation always helping to bring their rootsy subject matters to life.” \nHaving performed for years throughout the Eastern US\, the Casons moved to England where they spent several years touring extensively in the UK\, making a name for themselves within the music circuit of England by playing in a variety of venues from historic folk clubs in Cambridge\, Colchester\, and Norwich to internationally-recognized venues such as the Glasshouse International Centre for Music in Gateshead and the Queen’s Hall Theatre in Kent. They have also achieved international acclaim for their song\, A Feeling I Get\, a semi-finalist in the 2024 International Songwriting Competition. \nAfter releasing numerous singles\, an EP titled Songs of the Folk\, and their first full-length album\, Sun-Scorched Land\, A.T. and Lauren have released their second LP entitled In the Old Kingdom\, which was recorded in a centuries-old converted barn in Maldon\, Essex and the first Church of England parish chapel\, St. Michael’s in Woodham Walter\, built in the 1500s. \nThe Casons moved back to their mountain home in Western North Carolina where they’ve been featured on NPR’s The Martha Bassett Show\, WDVX Blue Plate Special\, and have performed in loads of house concerts and venues throughout the Southeast. They are also passionate about taking their music to those in distressed situations\, such as at homeless shelters\, rehab centers\, and prisons through their non-profit organization\, For the Folk (www.forthefolknc.org). \nThe Casons are certainly at their best when performing live. Their musical bond is gripping and palpable and as they tell stories alongside the tunes this connection transmits to audiences\, creating a truly engaging experience. A concert of Songs of the Folk is a concert of well-crafted music and lyrics\, pleasant harmonies\, intricate instrumentation\, and original storytelling. Audience members leave impressed by the songwriting and fingerstyle guitar-playing\, entranced by the refined vocal harmonies\, and enamored with the exceptional lyricism\, but most importantly\, each person leaves feeling like an old friend of the Casons and a part of the Songs of the Folk.

SUMMARY:First Friday Live — 8/7 — Adeem the Artist
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, August 7 / 6:00 – 7:00 PMKnoxville Visitors CenterFREE!\nHosted by Daniel Fluitt\nJoin us for our next First Friday Live presenting Adeem the Artist! Our Maker this week will be Kate Zibas with Illustrate Kate!\nBio:Harvested in the roaming hills of the lower piedmont mountains\, Adeem the Artist shows teeth on “notes from inside.” In short bursts of literary folk songs that draw inspiration from a full library of greater Roots sounds\, Adeem traverses the complexities of pinball\, suicide\, & grand larceny.\nFrenetic & electrifying; the new collection nests at the intersection of stand-up comedy\, social commentary\, and well-seasoned country songs that follow the likes of Tyler Childers in expanding the genre. Their thematic albums and confounding one-person-show invite audiences to lead with curiosity\, & disarm their expectations of the other.\nRecorded in three hours at Pink Moon Studios in Knoxville\, TN & released one week later\, it is brash in its urgency & unflinching in its vulnerability as it reimagines the soundscape of the greater American South.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special — 8/5 — Lone Cricket
DESCRIPTION:Lone Cricket is the musical project of recording artist David Hall\, blending ambient soundscapes with global rhythms and emotionally resonant songwriting. His debut album\, crafted largely in an off-grid studio in the woods\, weaves atmospheric textures with electronic percussion\, cinematic guitar\, and layered instrumentation. Now leaning more into solo guitar and vocals with ambient textures\, his evolving sound draws from Dark Folk\, Americana\, Cumbia\, and the intricacy of West African and Middle Eastern traditions\, and a raw\, expressive guitar style shaped by modern fingerstyle and early 2000s indie. The result is music that moves between introspection and energy—balancing stillness and movement\, memory and immediacy\, in a deeply immersive sonic journey.
