SUMMARY:The WDVX Big Plate — 7/3 — Robinella
DESCRIPTION:Robinella’s career began with a sort of luck that rarely comes to most artists within their lifetime.  What started out as a simple husband-and-wife duo fresh out of college quickly grew to a full-fledged band that blended Bluegrass\, Country and Jazz. The combination of Robinella’s honey-sweet vocals with violin\, mandolin\, bass\, drums and piano captivated audiences\, thus creating the ever popular Robinella & the CC Stringband. \nThey released their first album\, self-titled Robinella and The CC Stringband\, in 2000\, which quickly followed\, No Saint\, No Prize in 2001. Both were on the independent label Big Gulley Records. With a few simple twists of fate\, what followed was a whirlwind of rapid success – Columbia Records liked what they heard and signed Robinella in 2002. The label took seven songs from the band’s two prior albums and released them as the CD Blanket for My Soul and then released a full album in 2003\, Robinella and the CC Stringband. This led to a national tour including opening for such artists as Bob Dylan\, Willie Nelson\, Earl Scruggs\, Nickel Creek\, Robert Earl Keen\, Kasey Chambers\, Del McCoury and Rodney Crowell as well as an appearance on “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” and a music video on CMT for their hit single\, “Man Over”.  She also performed on NPR’s “Mountain Stage\,” appeared on the Grand Ole Opry and performed on PBS’s “SoundStage.” In 2006\, Robinella was nominated for “Emerging Artist of the Year” at the Americana Music Awards and released her fourth album\, “Solace for the Lonely”\, on Dualtone Records in Nashville. \nBut then life\, as it has a tendency to do\, threw a few curveballs her way. She became a mom and a couple of years later\, she and her husband/musical partner split up with a new record almost completed. Exhausted and somewhat disillusioned with the industry and its promises\, it was time to regroup\, redefine and get back to her roots. So she returned to her home\, the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains\, and got back in touch with what she truly wanted – love\, family\, friendship\, music\, art\, truth. \nWith that comes her latest release\, “Fly Away Bird”\, her most mature work. However\, within the melancholy and touches of sadness there is not true despair. For such a voice — that dazzling\, warm\, bright-as-summer-sunshine soprano — to even communicate it would most likely defy certain laws of emotional physics. No\, instead\, this album\, beneath the disappointments\, she is brimming with optimism — with hope. You can feel it\, and even more important than that\, you believe — because she believes\, and because her music is so honest and so genuine and so forthright that you just can’t help but knowing that this is an artist who still finds life to be magical.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special — 6/30 — Matt A. Foster / Sleepy Eyed John's Band
DESCRIPTION:Knoxville-based banjo and guitar songster\, Matt A. Foster brings audiences Appalachian-tinged renditions of various songs and ballads in between country blues-fused originals. He is an entertainer for both the young and old.\nHis debut album\, “Hills of Mexico”\, is like a porch visit with someone who makes you smile while lamenting the death of his friends. It’s four timeless American songs plaited with seven originals that nod to the tradition of dance tunes with serious subjects. Foster plays a fretless mountain banjo\, harmonica\, and the sole of his boot. It’s live\, simple\, and earnest. \n \nSleepy Eyed John’s Band will be performing as well!

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special — 6/29 — Starting September / David Easterling
DESCRIPTION:Hollis Rivenbark is the frontman\, lead vocalist \, rhythm guitarist and song writer for Starting September\, joined by BELL on drums and Jeffery McMurray on lead guitar. \nBorn in San Diego to a Navy family and raised between the US and Naples Italy\, Hollis grew up surrounded by music. The child of touring musical theatre performers\, she’s been on stage since she was seven\, and writing her own songs since she was fourteen. \nAfter being handed a guitar in high school and told to learn a Beatles song in a week\, she never put it down. Over the past decade\, she’s performed across California\, Utah\, Georgia\, and Tennessee\, building her sound through years of live shows and intimate venues. \nInfluenced by Neko Case\, Elliot Smith\, and Phoebe Bridgers. Starting September blends haunting vocals with introspective songwriting and acoustic-driven alternative textures. Their 2026 single\, “Serenity\,” captures the fragile space between heartbreak and hope in the early days of sobriety. \n \nDavid Easterling is a multi‑award‑winning Americana\, folk\, roots\, and comedy singer‑songwriter\, storyteller\, and recording artist who splits his time between Nashville\, New Orleans\, and Oak Ridge\, Tennessee—when he’s not out on the road. A prolific creative with international acclaim\, David writes or co‑writes over 100 songs a year with collaborators around the world\, and his catalog has been recorded\, released\, and performed by a growing roster of artists. \nFrom the Grand Ole Opry stage\, his co‑write “Losin’” with Alicia Harvey was named the 2024 Josie Music Awards Song of the Year (Country/Female). His own “Buried Before My Time” spent several weeks at #1 on the ReverbNation regional Americana charts\, while “Take Me Back To Tennessee” was voted the 2023 Song of the Year (Songs About Home) by the Cumberland Mountain Song Crafters Guild. Additional accolades include “You Can Have Wichita” (with J. T. Redding) earning finalist honors in the SongDoer Competition and a semi‑finalist spot in the U.K. Songwriting Contest. \nOnstage\, David is as much storyteller as troubadour\, weaving humor\, heart\, and hard‑won truth into every set. He performs throughout the Southeast\, the Midwest up to Wisconsin\, and annually on his five‑week Nashville‑to‑NOLA summer tour—yes\, including a stop at The Rising Sun. In Nashville\, his shows have included 12 Keys Saloon\, The Commodore\, Millennium Maxwell House\, Springwater\, Bobby’s Idle Hour\, NashVox Studios\, and more. \nDavid’s media footprint spans radio\, TV\, and podcasts: multiple appearances on Knoxville’s WDVX Blue Plate Special\, The Listening Room\, and The David Bradley Show in Nashville; Music City on the Mountain (HLE Radio); WKLF 95.5 FM; K2K Radio in London; and airplay reaching as far as Australia. He has released seven albums of original music\, with more on the way\, and helms Hey Bear Music Entertainment (BMI). \nWhether he’s trading verses in a Nashville writer’s room\, swapping stories in a New Orleans club\, or bringing an Oak Ridge porch song to life onstage\, David Easterling delivers songs that travel well and are built to linger.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special — 6/27 — Barkley Cove / D Boone Pittman Trio
DESCRIPTION:Barkley Cove is the band to watch in the new folk scene. Raised on collaborative songwriting\, rich vocal harmony\, and the folk revival records of the 60s and beyond\, members Jillian Dolan (guitar)\, Yusuf Miller (mandolin)\, Silas Gross (banjo)\, and Robert Myers (bass) mix genres of folk\, rock\, country\, and bluegrass to create a distinctly original sound that will linger in your ear long after the last chord. As their reach expands throughout the United States\, Barkley Cove’s imaginative songwriting and dedication to originality continues to push the boundaries of new folk music. You can listen to Barkley Cove’s new single\, “Cecilia\,” on all streaming platforms. \n \nD Boone Pittman is a Kentucky songwriter whose music blends mountain roots\, outlaw country\, and heartland rock into something both timeless and personal. Raised in Eastern Kentucky\, his songs reflect the grit and beauty of the region\, shaped by influences like Steve Earle\, Tom T. Hall\, and Bruce Springsteen. With the 2026 release of Rust\, Pittman continues to build a growing catalog of five studio albums and two live records. He toured England in 2025\, expanding his reach to international audiences. His recent accolades include “Song of the Year” (2025) and “Songwriter of the Year” (2024) at the Josie Music Awards\, along with “Best Original Song” at the Appalachian Entertainment Awards. \nA product of Appalachia\, Eastern Kentucky’s own D Boone Pittman was immersed in a melting pot of music as a child. From the mountain sounds of his roots\, the outlaw country his dad favored\, to the classic rock sounds he grew up with\, Pittman’s music marks a convergence of musical forces. His original music is influenced by some of the great storytellers like Steve Earle\, Bruce Springsteen\, and Tom T. Hall. Compared to country greats like Jamey Johnson and Conway Twitty\, Pittman works hard to plow his own path with his music. Pittman tells his own stories on stage while sharing in the musical legacy that has led him here.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special — 6/25 — Rodney Rice / The Starlight Darlins
DESCRIPTION:Rodney Rice knows just how to capture the fleeting glimmers of an emotional moment in life and turn them into songs that evoke our own feelings of despair and hope\, loss and love. Rice delivers his lyrics with a knowing nod and wink and a twinkle of the eye to the difficulties we encounter in our daily lives\, and creates memorable characters in his songs whose foibles remind us of folks we know. As he says\, “Music is a common language that reaches all and brings people from worlds apart together.” Rice cannily matches music with lyrics\, pairing a glimpse of a world turned upside down with a jaunty New Orleans jazz swing melody or an ode to young love with a lively country shuffle. \n \nThe Starlight Darlins are a queer Appalachian folk band featuring Emily Johnson-Erday (she/her) on banjo\, Gray Buchanan (they/them) on fiddle\, Sage Christie (they/he) on guitar\, and Lauren Oxford (she/her) on bodhrán. All four Darlins are award-winning songwriters with their own distinct influences\, but their collective sound is one that blurs the borders of genres while still remaining rooted in traditional music. Known for their trademark four-part harmonies\, powerful original songs\, and intricate arrangements\, the Darlins have left audiences spellbound from coast to coast. \nSkyline\, their first studio EP\, is available everywhere you listen to music.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special — 6/23 — Essence and Gold Country / Sam Lock Trio
DESCRIPTION:Father’s Daughter finds Essence Goldman – yes\, that’s her real name – mining her life’s most vulnerable moments and emerging with songs that speak across generations. The result is a collection that radiates both grit and grace: a celebration of hard-won freedom and the road back to one’s true self. \nSixth generation San Francisco-born singer-songwriter-instrumentalist Essence grew up in Haight-Ashbury the daughter of two flower children\, beginning her musical journey when gifted a notebook by her father. She put that to good use\, along with a ubiquitous Walkman\, learning her craft from classic story-telling singer-songwriters like John Prine\, Willie Nelson\, Dolly Parton\, Carole King\, Tom Petty\, Stevie Nicks\, Emmylou Harris and Bob Dylan to current tunesmiths Lucinda Williams and Gillian Welch. \n“I felt the vibration from the generation that came before me\,” said Essence\, which can be heard throughout her latest collection of songs\, Father’s Daughter\, her debut for noted Los Angeles indie label Blue Elan. “I was brought up on Bill Graham and festivals in Golden Gate Park – when art\, movements of social change\, and music defined the culture.” \nRecorded at Allegiant Records\, not far from her Marin County home\, Father’s Daughter is both deeply personal and autobiographical—shaped by the profound influence of the loving\, single father who raised her and instilled in her a deep connection to music\, and by the emotional journey of losing him while also facing the end of a difficult marriage that left her a single mother of two young children. \n“Music has always been very healing for me\,” she reflects. “From my days as a kid going through hard times\, it was my life line\, my saving grace.” \nProducer David Simon Baker – who also worked on her last album\, 2016’s Black Wings – suggested Essence use a live band in the studio for the first time. Dubbed Gold Country\, the group includes her current musical partner Danny Uzilevsky and a stellar cast of players bringing warmth and grit to a sound rooted in classic country and Americana\, rich with pedal steel\, dobro\, mandolin and banjo. \nAlong with the title track\, “Love Like Ours\,” starting and ending with a solitary plucked banjo\, and “Meet Me in the Stars\,” which harks back to the tradition of the Grand Ole Opry\, the Carter Family and the Louvin Brothers\, are songs about the death of her father (“Your spirit is with us/Body mighta broke down and turned to dust/But that doesn’t mean you ain’t with us”). \n“Free” celebrates the liberation that comes after emerging from a destructive relationship\, calling out “the gaslighting\, betrayal\, lies and toxic silence.” It’s an anthem for a fresh start and the courage it takes to reclaim one’s self respect and walk away from a toxic relationship. “The Gamble” is about a choice between two lovers\, “staying where it’s safe and familiar or taking a leap and venturing into the new\, with all kinds of risks and potential rewards.” \nThe rollicking “Good Mom\,” co-written by Roger Rocha (of the 4 Non Blondes)\, is a polarizing paean to living it up and cutting loose as a hard working mama (“I’m a good mom/I wanna get stoned/I wanna get boned/I wanna get high as a kite/Wanna drink whisky tonight”). “Quit You” offers a timeless romantic duet of untimely\, inconvenient\, and undeniable love sung between Essence and Uzilevsky in the style of male/female pairings Johnny Cash and June Carter\, George Jones and Tammy Wynette and Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings. \n“The Heart Doesn’t Lie” is a cri de coeur\, an apt description of how Essence continues to mine her own life in song (“Sometimes you gotta sink to swim/Even losers can still be choosers/Give the wheel another spin”). “You don’t have to let your past define your future\,” she noted. “Or let your worst decisions define you.” \n“All my songs come from life—I write what I know’ through feast and famine\, the highs and lows. Music is my North Star. It’s my prayer and the path I walk\, until my last breath.” \nThe journey to this album took several unexpected detours. After enduring false starts in the music industry and the realities of raising a family solo\, Essence shifted focus and began sharing her vocal and songwriting expertise through private coaching\, working with both artists and business professionals. That path led her to Bernie Dalton\, a surfer and swimming pool cleaner with rock-and-roll dreams. Just months into working together\, Dalton lost his voice\, a symptom of the most aggressive strain of bulbar-onset ALS\, Lou Gehrig’s disease\, which eventually robbed him of his voice and motor skills\, along with his ability to play guitar. \nGiving her a raft of handwritten lyrics and anointing her as “his voice\,” Bernie and Essence formed Bernie and the Believers\, putting melody and music to his words\, collaborating on a song\, “Unusual Boy\,” which they submitted for a songwriting contest sponsored by National Public Radio\, the prize an appearance on the popular Tiny Desk concert series. Along with 4 Non Blondes guitarist Rocha and several other musicians who were working on Father’s Daughter\, Essence went on to record and release an entire Bernie and the Believers album with $30\,000 raised on GoFundMe. Less than a year after that momentous 2018 viral performance on NPR – where an overwhelmed Bernie was beamed in via computer – Dalton passed away at 49. \nWrote NPR’s Bob Boilen (Host of NPR’s All Things Considered and founder of the Tiny Desk series)\,“Bernie’s story moves me to tears more than any other in my 30 years at NPR. It’s also a story with a beautiful\, uplifting message and one that culminated in a Tiny Desk concert that left everyone who witnessed it filled with both utter joy and sheer sadness”. \n“Working with Bernie helped me make sense and find peace with my journey as an artist\,” said Essence\, whose path has included major label deals\, multiple album releases\, and national tours supporting artists like Jason Mraz\, Shawn Colvin\, Tom Petty\, Sarah McLachlan\, Natalie Merchant\, Chrissie Hynde\, Steve Miller\, Pat Benatar\, and Linda Perry. “Until then\, I had felt disheartened by the industry.” \nThat bittersweet chapter ultimately inspired a forthcoming feature film now in development with Paramount and John Legend’s Get Lifted Film Co.\, with Essence serving as producer. In the wake of that experience\, she founded Believe Music Heals\, a nonprofit dedicated to sharing the transformative healing power of music as therapy. \n“This album is about grief\, healing\, resilience and rebirth\,” she says. “It’s about the passing of my father\, the end of my marriage\, and the lessons I’ve learned along the way. I’ve never felt more connected to the music or to myself. And we are just getting started.” \nEssence & Gold Country’s Father’s Daughter is the latest chapter in a story still unfolding—with heart\, humanity\, and songs that refuse to fade. \n \nThe Sam Lock Trio is a new project from Victor Furtado. He is a long time banjo player for the Sam Grisman Project.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special — 6/18 — Eric Hagen / Ben Torbett
DESCRIPTION:Eric Hagen’s music is a heartfelt ode to the timeless dance between joy and sorrow wrapped in the faded splendor of a bygone era. His performances are like vintage postcards\, each one a snapshot of a wistful journey through a land where the echoes of heartache linger in the dusty corners of forgotten jukeboxes. \nMake Country Sad Again is Eric Hagen leaning into the kind of country music that values songwriting over image and honesty over polish. Rooted in classic honky-tonk\, country rock\, and Americana\, the album mixes sharp storytelling with a worn-in sound built around pedal steel\, telecasters\, and live-room energy. The songs focus on flawed people\, complicated relationships\, small-town restlessness\, and the tension between tradition and modern country culture. SUMMARY:WDVX Summer Nights - 6/17 - Redd & The Paper Flowers / Ettore Buzzini
DESCRIPTION:WDVX Summer Nights\nWednesday\, June 17\, 2026 | Doors 6:00 PM | Show 7:00 PM\nYee-Haw Brewing\, Knoxville\, TN\nFREE | All Ages \nWDVX is proud to present another night of free live music on the big stage at Yee-Haw Brewing for the 2026 Summer Nights concert series! \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRedd & The Paper Flowers’s origin begins in 2021 when Redd Daugherty met Gavin Gregg at Carolina Ale House in Knoxville\, TN. Former bassist\, Will Ross\, invited Gavin to play a set\, and since then\, Redd and Gavin have been inseparable.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKatie Adams and Colleen d’Alelio were first introduced to Redd and Gavin at the Open Chord Open Mic in Knoxville\, TN\, as they were building community in a new city. They completed their bachelors at Ithaca University and moved to Knoxville during Katie’s master’s degree completion at The University of Tennessee. \nThe group hit a rough patch in February of 2023 after the tragic murder of Redd’s dear friend\, Jason Cooper\, by his roommate. Coop left Rush’s Music\, a local band instrument rental store that services 90 schools and roughly 3\,000 students\, to Redd without her knowledge. Redd began working at Rush’s in 2011 through her bachelor’s and master’s degrees before ultimately quitting to teach high school English at L&N STEM Academy–a local\, public magnet school in Knoxville. It was at Rush’s Music where she met and befriended Coop\, and they remained dear friends until his untimely death. \nTheir debut album\, Appalachian Bell Jar\, which they began tracking in January of 2023\, was put on hold–as well as touring–until Redd could address the needs of Rush’s Music and the greater\, Knoxville music community\, which relied on Rush’s. \nMembers Katie and Gavin were able to quit their previous jobs to help at the music store. Redd credits Katie\, Colleen\, and Gavin for giving her direction\, meaning\, and purpose during an intense time of grief and overwhelm\, and they credit this tragedy in strengthening their bond as a band and group of best friends. \nAfter so much change and loss\, it became very clear to the band that each other and their music was the most important priority. \nTheir debut album\, Appalachian Bell Jar\, released on May 12th 2025.  \nOthers have described Redd & The Paper Flowers’ music as Appalachian Jazz\, Appalachian Folk\, and Folk-grass.  \nWhile they truly enjoy all of those genre descriptors\, the band self identifies as “Living Room Folk.” Their superpower is the energy and joy each band mate pulls from playing music together\, and those feelings are often transferred to sweet listeners–making them feel cozy\, as if they were receiving a concert in their living room.  \nThe band is currently in the studio for their sophomore album\, Dead Little Thing\, that highlights the struggles of 2023 – 2024\, which will release in the fall of 2026. \nThe group is based in Redd’s hometown of Knoxville\, TN. \n\nWhen you think about bluegrass music\, you don’t think about grand emotional and spiritual journeys that pierce your soul; yet that is exactly what Swiss-American songwriting and banjo prodigy Ettore Buzzini is creating with his innovative\, classical-infused but deeply traditional bluegrass music. Imagine Earl Scruggs had been influenced by Led Zeppelin and Chopin and you’ll get an idea of Ettore’s sound. \nEttore(pronounced like “Letter-A”) has a decidedly youthful take on traditional bluegrass\, rooted in tradition\, but with an innovative\, distinctive picking style\, and a unique gift of songwriting . To the casual listener\, Ettore’s sound is simply hard-driving bluegrass. But anyone who listens a little more closely will quickly notice that Ettore’s unique music weaves together the iconic acoustic sounds of bluegrass\, the youthful energy and hard drive of pop-rock\, and the emotional journeys of classical romantic music. \nHis unique\, fresh style is a product of his roots on both sides. He was imbued with the classical tradition while living with his family in Italian-speaking Switzerland\, as a toddler. At age 6\, his East Tennessee grandfather introduced him to Flatt & Scruggs\, and he was hit by bluegrass like a lightning bolt. He begged his parents for a banjo for nearly 3 years until\, at age 9\, they relented. Ettore’s love for banjo expanded as he devoured the traditional bluegrass classics\, while also becoming enthralled by the power of classical music\, inspired by his Swiss grandparents’ sacred choir. Ettore made a name for himself at youth competitions in the Blue Ridge Mountains with his prodigious banjo picking style as well as his mastery of flatpicking guitar. He then cemented his reputation as a prodigy when\, at just 11 years old\, he won the Kruger Brothers’ Young Songwriter’s Contest\, with an original banjo and lyrical composition about the Norse mythology of Ragnarok. By age 14\, he had released his first album\, after being approached by legendary bluegrass record label Patuxent Records. \nEttore has collaborated and performed with bluegrass legends Pete Wernick\, Danny Paisley\, Mark Schatz\, Patrick MacAvinue\, Christopher Henry\, and many others. He has been featured at celebrated festivals such as Merlefest and FloydFest\, PBS’s Woodsongs\, and more. At age 16\, competing against industry professionals\, he won the prestigious Fresh Grass Competition with his original composition\, “The Birth of Eros”\, a hard-driving banjo instrumental with a classical romantic theme of a lost soul’s hope of redemption and love. \nEttore’s young star is soaring in the bluegrass scene\, where his unique\, virtuosic sound is garnering Between his prodigious musical talent\, unique songwriting\, and an infectious love of the music\, he may just succeed in turning GenAlpha into GenBlue. \n  \nThanks to our sponsors: Yee-Haw Brewing\, ORNL Federal Credit Union\, and Garza Law. \n

Nief-Norf’s mission is fostering the advancement of innovative chamber music through the collaboration of performers\, composers\, and scholars within immersive educational and artistic environments. \nWHAT DOES “NIEF-NORF” MEAN?\n“The term ‘nief-norf’ came from some older graduate students who call any experimental or strange music ‘nief-norf.’ It’s meant as onomatopoeia for strange sounds\, like ‘bleep-blop.’ Andy and I bonded over the fact that we secretly loved the music that these grad students were deriding. Although nief-norf was born as a derogatory term\, we flipped it and created a group that specializes in this kind of experimental music.” – Kerry O’Brien\, Nief-Norf Co-Founder

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special — 6/11 — Cody Bolden / India Ramey
DESCRIPTION:Cody Bolden is bringin’ us country music you’ll likely listen to. \n \nAfter the success of her fiery 2024 LP\, Baptized By The Blaze\, Nashville outlaw siren India Ramey is back with Villain Era\, out now\, via Copaco Recordds/Blue Élan. Baptized By The Blaze was the story of Ramey’s journey through the fire\, a harrowing passage toward healing and empowerment. Villain Era is firmly rooted in her own reckoning; it doesn’t ask for permission\, it kicks the door wide open. \n“This album is the ‘healed’ me\,” Ramey says. “I didn’t know how to have boundaries because I was such a people pleaser. When you live your life that way\, you lose sight of who you really are. I’ve spent the last few years finding my authentic self\, reclaiming my identity. The title track\, ‘Welcome To My Villain Era\,’ is me saying I’m not going to suffer fools anymore. I’m not compromising anymore. If my boundaries offend you\, I’ll happily play the villain in that story.” \nArmed with that conviction and a new batch of songs\, Ramey left the South for the first time to record in Los Angeles with two-time Grammy-nominated producer Eric Corne. Together\, they built a soundscape as cinematic as it is cathartic. Ramey\, whose fans have taken to calling her “The Woman In Black” and “the Wednesday Addams of country music\,” told Corne she wanted the album to sound like Johnny Cash and Loretta Lynn had risen from the grave to score a Quentin Tarantino film. Corne assembled a powerhouse band to help her pull it off\, including Ted Russell Kamp (Shooter Jennings) on bass\, Eugene Edwards (Dwight Yoakam) and Chris Masterson (Steve Earle\, The Mastersons\, The Wallflowers) on guitar\, Eleanor Whitmore (Steve Earle & The Dukes\, The Mastersons) on fiddle\, Kevin Brown on drums\, Boo Bernstein (Emmylou Harris\, Dwight Yoakam) on pedal steel\, and Haley Spence Brown (The Doohickeys) on backing vocals. \n“He didn’t just listen to me\, he heard me\,” Ramey says of Corne. “The musicians were equally respectful of what my vision was\, and they went above and beyond. It was the most collaborative\, emboldening recording experience I’ve ever had.” \nThe result is Villain Era: ten spaghetti western–meets–honky tonk vignettes\, penned solely by Ramey\, laced with grit\, gallows humor\, and emotional precision.  \nWith the first notes of opener “We Ride at Dawn\,” Ramey puts her boots on the ground and reclaims her territory. A callback to “King of the Ashes” from her 2020 LP Shallow Graves\, the song rises from the rubble with reverb\, ghostly pedal steel\, and the promise of revenge from the women who survived. On “Scattered and Smothered\,” Ramey trades the battlefield for a Waffle House booth at 2 a.m.\, where heartbreak meets hangover in a haze of regret. “Well I’m a hot mess\, I must confess / Ever since he brought up takin’ next steps / And my drunk ass needs some hash browns and scrambled eggs\,” she sings\, As patrons fight\, chairs fly\, and late-night shenanigans ensue in the background\, our heroine is lost in thought\, hoping the grease soaks up the memories of the night she’s attempting to put in her rearview.  \nThe tone turns bittersweet on “Crying in My Lingerie\,” a deceptively upbeat breakup song that captures the loneliness of a woman who’s realizing her marriage is over. Doing her best to fan the flames of something long since gone\, she drowns her sorrows in boxed wine. Dressed in the now-meaningless symbols of desire and devotion\, she realizes she’s become a divorcee in waiting.  \nThroughout Villain Era\, Ramey explores what it means to step fully into oneself after years of just trying to survive. “There’s a lot of freedom in knowing yourself\,” she says. “It makes you feral. But in these times\, joy is resistance. We should be having some fun\, too.”  \nSaving Country Music once wrote\, “Many of the women in country music these days love to sing about lighting stuff on fire to symbolically tease their empowerment. With India Ramey\, you think she’ll actually haul off and do it.” It’s an apt description for an artist who doesn’t just tell stories of strength\, she lives them out loud. \nWith six studio albums under her belt\, Ramey continues to be one of country music’s fiercest truth-tellers. Her 2017 breakout Snake Handler landed her on Rolling Stone’s “10 New Country Artists You Need to Know.” Her 2020 “post-apocalyptic western” album\, Shallow Graves\, earned international recognition\, debuting at #6 on the Euro Americana Chart. Then came 2024’s Baptized By The Blaze\, a searing chronicle of her battle with a dependence on prescribed medication and PTSD stemming from childhood trauma. Like a phoenix rising from the ashes\, she sang on the title track\, “Yesterday I set myself on fire / With my own hands I built that funeral pyre / I built it so high the flames touched the sky / And now I am alive because I died.” \nNow\, with Villain Era\, India Ramey stands unapologetically in her power\, delivering songs that cut deep and laugh loudly\, songs that balance the weight of lived experience with the freedom of release.
