SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special — 7/20 — Old Sap
DESCRIPTION:Poet from Chicago\, rambled out to Montana\, cut a banjo from a tamarack\, strings across the country\, foot like a freight train\, voice rushing down over lush Appalachia\, sings a thrush tune through the rush hour and into your long-forgotten prairie dreams.\nFolk. Folk Rock. Americana. \nA songster who plays the long range and tradition of Americana—folk\, blues\, country\, jazz\, rock\, indie. Old Sap connects to the roots of the banjo by exploring its history and potential as a rhythmic-melodic instrument. With a stompbox to solidify the beat\, it’s a full-band experience in a solo act. \nSap also plays plenty of familiar tunes—John Prine\, the Avett Brothers\, Irish trad\, Tom Waits\, My Morning Jacket\, Bon Iver\, Talking Heads—weaving these through hours of original songs\, stories\, & poems. \nWhether playing solo\, with sparse accompaniment or a full band\, Old Sap brings a time-machine party full of rhythm\, humor\, poetry\, & catharsis.

SUMMARY:WDVX Summer Nights - 7/22 - Bronwyn / The Naughty Knots
DESCRIPTION:WDVX Summer Nights\nWednesday\, July 22\, 2026 | Doors 6:00 PM | Show 7:00 PM\nYee-Haw Brewing\, Knoxville\, TN\nFREE | All Ages \nWDVX is proud to present another night of free live music on the big stage at Yee-Haw Brewing for the 2026 Summer Nights concert series! \nBronwyn has long been renowned as a prolific instrumentalist\, earning two IBMA Fiddle Player of the Year awards as well as a Grammy for her work with Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway. \nAs a child\, music lessons gradually transitioned into public performances\, with a particular emphasis on Irish music after her family relocated to Charlottesville\, Virginia. And her lifelong musical education continues to shape her work today. A background in dance makes her a captivating and energetic live performer. An on-stage collaboration with fellow Charlottesville native Dave Matthews taught her how a crowd could feed your energy. And attending Berklee during the early years of its American Roots Music program offered inspiration from classmates like Sierra Hull and Alex Hargreaves—as well as an introduction to Tuttle and most of Bronwyn’s Golden Highway bandmates.  “My favorite bluegrass musicians today are the ones who are rooted in traditional music\, but don’t really see any boundaries\,” she says. “It’s as if they draw from a traditional bluegrass vocabulary\, but use it to say what they want to say.” \nNow\, as her own entry in bluegrass history expands from celebrated instrumentalist to bandleader and frontwoman\, Bronwyn isn’t just crafting a career in the image of genre greats like Sam Bush and Jerry Douglas; she’s bringing them along for the ride. Both Bush and Douglas are featured as players on her latest album I Built a World\, and they’re not the only of Bronwyn’s musically-inclined pals and heroes to make an appearance. \nOpening this evening will be The Naughty Knots\, with includes WDVX’s own Sarah Pirkle! \nThanks to our sponsors: Yee-Haw Brewing\, ORNL Federal Credit Union\, and Garza Law. \n

SUMMARY:The WDVX Big Plate — 7/24 — Levi Foster
DESCRIPTION:When Levi Foster flew to Los Angeles carrying a 1966 Martin guitar and a stack of restless songs that didn’t quite fit Nashville’s modern mold\, he wasn’t chasing polish\, he was chasing freedom. The result is Foster’s second full-length album Appalachian Funk Tree (out October 9\, 2026)\, produced by Shooter Jennings at the legendary Snake Mountain (Sunset Sound Studio 3) in Hollywood. \nAt a moment when mainstream country continues to lean sleek and radio-ready\, Foster’s music digs into something stranger and more unpredictable. The 13 tracks on Appalachian Funk Tree blend mountain gospel spirit\, Red Dirt attitude\, new and traditional Country\, and Americana storytelling that feels lived-in rather than manufactured. Jennings\, known for championing artists who exist outside traditional boundaries\, approached the project less as a producer chasing perfection and more as a collaborator helping Foster build a sonic world where humor\, chaos\, and hard-won truths could coexist. \nLevi Foster writes songs that feel like tall tales told at the end of a long night – part humor\, part hard truth\, and always rooted in the storytelling traditions of American music. “Fat Elvis\,” the first song released off the album\, is a rowdy\, cinematic introduction to Foster’s evolved sound. What began as a late-night joke among friends sparked by the line in the song “sweatin’ like fat Elvis on a postcard down in Memphis\, Tennessee” quickly evolved into something larger. Set against the chaos of Mardi Gras in New Orleans\, “Fat Elvis” unfolds like a hazy fever dream of American excess and hard-earned lessons\, blending humor with a darker reflection on fading icons\, bad decisions\, and the strange mythology we build around ourselves.   The track signals a new chapter for an artist determined to push beyond genre lines without abandoning his roots. \nFoster’s songs wander through strange characters\, human flaws\, and the kind of moments that feel too real to be made up. As the Country and Americana landscape continues to evolve\, Appalachian Funk Tree positions Foster among a new wave of artists willing to challenge genre expectations while staying rooted in the storytelling spirit that defines country music at its core.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special — 7/25 — Chris Long / James Leigh and The Rest
DESCRIPTION:Singer-songwriter Chris Long\, music is an adventure that keeps getting better and better. He grew up with a father who was a musician\, and learned to play guitar at age 12. Since then\, the adventure’s just kept going. Chris Long writes and performs music from the Heartland\, Roots Rock & Americana genres.   \nChris played in two bands with his father in the late 90s and early 2000s. They played together in the bands Sloe Ginn and Stonewall Gray. Since then\, he’s moved away from performing with a group to focus on a career as a solo singer-songwriter. He has performed across the US and internationally\, including performances at Nashville’s famed Bluebird Cafe and The Commodore.  Chris has graced the stages of Dollywood’s famed DreamMore Resort\, Jim Oliver’s Smokehouse and the infamous WDVX “Blue Plate Special” along with radio & television appearances.  \nChris’s music blends Americana and rock to create a rough yet classic sound. His focus is on telling stories of everyday life and the world around him through his songs. He’s heavily influenced by Bruce Springsteen\, John Mellencamp\, and Creedence Clearwater Revival. The sounds of classic rock come through in his music. He’s also a history teacher\, something that’s had a strong impact on his songwriting. He says\, “For me\, music has to mean something. I love songs that speak about life and the world we live in. That’s the music that tells our story. That’s the music we carry with us throughout life.” \n \nJames Leigh and The Rest are a rock band whose sound blends the raw energy of 60s rock with the emotional depth of modern songwriting. With heartfelt lyrics that strike a universal chord\, their music is as much about storytelling as it is about the catharsis of raw\, powerful melodies. Formed with a shared love for timeless influences like The Gaslight Anthem\, Bruce Springsteen\, 60s rock classics\, and 90s country\, the band creates songs that feel both nostalgic and fresh—offering a soundtrack for the broken-hearted and the hopeful alike.\nThe band features Jimmy Morris on lead vocals and guitar\, whose gritty\, soulful voice serves as the emotional anchor to their music. Alan Griffin lays down the groove on bass\, while Chris Suggs’ guitar work brings the perfect blend of twang and grit\, channeling everything from classic rock to alt-country. Drummer Paul Lowe provides a steady\, rhythmic backbone\, helping bring the band’s dynamic energy to life.\nTheir latest release\, Lost\, is a collection of tracks that feel like they’ve been carved from the pain of personal experience. With lyrics that speak to love\, loss\, and the search for meaning\, the album shows the band’s evolution while staying true to the raw\, honest sound they’ve built since their formation. Each song resonates with a sense of longing\, as if plucked straight from a broken heart—but it’s that very vulnerability that connects with listeners on a deeper level.\nJames Leigh and the Rest have proven that their music isn’t just about the notes they play\, but the emotions they stir. As they continue to tour and share their stories with the world\, they remain committed to writing songs that speak to the heart\, one beat at a time.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special — 8/3 — Laurelyn Dossett / Sam Mooney
DESCRIPTION:Singer/songwriter Laurelyn Dossett lives and writes in the piedmont of North Carolina\, and her songs tend to reflect the stories of the region\, both traditional and contemporary. One of the most sought-after voices in creative collaborations\, she co-founded Polecat Creek with singing partner Kari Sickenberger in 1997. Laurelyn is a frequent performer at regional music festivals such as Merlefest and has been a guest on the radio show Prairie Home Companion. She has toured with folk legend Alice Gerrard and songwriter Diana Jones\, and premiered composer Kenneth Frazelle’s song cycle\, “Songs in the Rear View Mirror\,” in 2010\, and has toured with the North Carolina Symphony in 2009 and 2011 and 2013. \n \nSam Mooney is a musician from Mississippi\, and he considers himself fortunate to have the privilege of making music for others. \nFor as long as he can remember\, few things have brought him as much joy as music. Whether it’s going to a show\, playing piano\, or jamming to music in the car with friends\, he simply loves it. Naturally\, a life working in the music industry became the dream he decided to chase. \nOver the last several years\, Mooney has spent most of his free time on the road playing shows. During that time\, he has been blessed with some amazing opportunities. He has opened for and shared the stage with some of his favorite bands and musicians\, recorded and released three projects\, and traveled around the country performing. Most importantly\, however\, he has made countless new friends along the journey. \nHis hope is to write music that will speak into people’s lives. Music that will bring joy. Music that will serve as a soundtrack to whatever lies ahead on their journey. His goal is to put on fun and exciting shows that allow audiences to escape into a special musical experience and make great memories. And\, hopefully\, he’ll get the chance to meet them at a show sometime.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special — 8/5 — Lone Cricket
DESCRIPTION:Lone Cricket is the musical project of recording artist David Hall\, blending ambient soundscapes with global rhythms and emotionally resonant songwriting. His debut album\, crafted largely in an off-grid studio in the woods\, weaves atmospheric textures with electronic percussion\, cinematic guitar\, and layered instrumentation. Now leaning more into solo guitar and vocals with ambient textures\, his evolving sound draws from Dark Folk\, Americana\, Cumbia\, and the intricacy of West African and Middle Eastern traditions\, and a raw\, expressive guitar style shaped by modern fingerstyle and early 2000s indie. The result is music that moves between introspection and energy—balancing stillness and movement\, memory and immediacy\, in a deeply immersive sonic journey.

SUMMARY:First Friday Live — 8/7 — Miss Tess
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, August 7 / 6:00 – 7:00 PMKnoxville Visitors CenterFREE!\nHosted by Daniel Fluitt\nJoin us for our next First Friday Live presenting Miss Tess! Our Maker will be Kate Zibas with Illustrate Kate\n\nMiss Tess is one of those singular artists who deserve all the superlatives and accolades one could hoist upon a rare talent such as hers. This unassuming chanteuse is\, as they say in the business\, a true “triple threat” – a superb songwriter and adept multi-instrumentalist with an extraordinary voice that can sing the birds from the trees.\nHer music takes root and draws from an era when country music\, contrary to popular belief\, was downright sophisticated\, and filled with instrumentalists who were every bit as hip musically as their jazz counterparts – stretching back to a time when Western swing bands and jazz bands played a lot of the same material – albeit with a different accent\, informed by their physical location. Location has a lot to do with the new Miss Tess album\, but I’ll get to that in a minute. I would like to stress here that Miss Tess is not necessarily a “country” artist per se\, although if she were invited to play the Grand Ole Opry\, she would not be out of place\, and would no doubt be very well received. Country Soul might be a better descriptor if I was forced to label it\, but her music also has elements of rhythm and blues\, jazz\, country blues\, rock n’ roll – but never manufactured to re-create a particular sound or era. I’m tempted to call this new Miss Tess album “easy listening” except she’d probably slap me. But damn\, it really is so easy to listen to: laid back\, soulful\, funky\, and addictive … much like the place it was recorded in and inspired by.\nThe new Miss Tess album is the product of an on-going love affair with the culturally rich region of South Louisiana known as Acadiana\, or more specifically\, the magical little city of Lafayette. If New Orleans is the “Big Easy\,” then Lafayette is certainly the “Little Easier.” It is hard to describe this sleepy little town unless you’ve been here and experienced its infectious atmosphere for yourself. It may not be for everyone\, but if you are of a certain disposition\, it could affect you in ways you might not have imagined – it might even change your life.\nI sometimes think of Lafayette as a cultural vortex with a magnetic pull that attracts like-minded souls. If you are longing for community\, (music or otherwise)\, you’ll likely find it here. Relaxed\, warm and welcoming\, folks here are unafraid to show affection for one another\, and are there for each other when times get tough. Cajun and Creole music\, mostly sung in French\, permeates the air\, and hardwood floors are filled with excellent dancers of all ages and ethnicities. Each successive generation passes the time-honored traditions down to the next\, preserving the cuisine\, music\, and language. Even in times of great strife and uncertainty\, Lafayette somehow always manages to provide a soft landing.\nMiss Tess lives and works in Nashville these days but is a recurrent visitor to Lafayette. She has played our clubs and is a frequent guest at the beloved Blackpot Festival and Cook Off\, held every year on the last weekend of October since its inception in 2006. She has made many lifelong friends and fans in Lafayette since she first started visiting here back in 2010\, and many of them are among the finest musicians South Louisiana has to offer. The same can be said for her uber-talented musical partner\, the ubiquitous Thomas Bryan Eaton – guitar mastermind and producer extraordinaire. Thomas is an exceptional musician and has been a key element in Miss Tess’s touring band for many years. He is a wizard in the studio and a highly sympathetic musical collaborator. Thomas and Tess met onstage in New York City back in 2010\, and they both visited Lafayette that same year\, attending Blackpot for the first time. They’ve been coming back as often as possible ever since.

SUMMARY:WDVX Summer Nights - 9/9 - The Jason Carter Band / The Asheville Mountain Boys
DESCRIPTION:WDVX Summer Nights\nWednesday\, September 9\, 2026 | Doors 6:00 PM | Show 7:00 PM\nYee-Haw Brewing\, Knoxville\, TN\nFREE | All Ages \nWDVX is proud to present another night of free live music on the big stage at Yee-Haw Brewing for the 2026 Summer Nights concert series! \n  \nIn Lloyd\, Kentucky\, on U.S. 23\, there’s a sign on the Country Music Highway dedicated to renowned fiddler Jason Carter. It was placed there because of his other accomplishments—the Grammy awards\, the worldwide tours\, and the many other accolades he’s earned through his music. But for Carter\, joining the legendary names honored on that stretch of highway just might mean the most. “There’s a certain sound that’s up there that you just don’t hear anywhere else\,” he says. “I think that played a big part in how I sound today.” \nTrue to those Kentucky roots\, Carter continues to pour all he has back into bluegrass. For thirty years\, he has been the fiddle player for the Del McCoury Band—the most awarded group in bluegrass history. He’s won three Grammy awards\, including 2018’s “Best Bluegrass Album” with the Travelin’ McCourys\, of which he is a founding member. And he’s taken home five IBMAs for “Fiddle Player of the Year\,” a staggering number that isn’t quite so crazy once you realize just how many bluegrass greats have turned to Carter for collaboration. \nAs a fiddler\, Carter has been featured on albums by Steve Earle\, Ricky Skaggs\, Dierks Bentley\, Charlie Daniels\, Vince Gill\, Asleep at the Wheel\, and many more\, all in addition to his tireless touring and recording with Del as well as the Travelin’ McCourys. On Carter’s forthcoming solo album\, Lowdown Hoedown\, listeners may recognize instrumental contributions from such legends as Jerry Douglas or Sam Bush alongside vocals from young trailblazers like Sarah Jarosz or Billy Strings. This time\, though\, Carter is singing lead. \n  \nBy their name\, you know where they are from\, and by their sound\, you know what they are about. The Asheville Mountain Boys are on a mission to capture not just the style but the spirit of traditional bluegrass. Asheville\, NC has long been known for great music and its roots in bluegrass go back to the founding of the genre (Bill Monroe’s first broadcast performance as the Bluegrass Boys was at Asheville radio station WWNC in 1938) A group that firmly stakes its claim to the tradition of the music from the area\, The Asheville Mountain Boys spring onto the scene with a thought\, ”What happened to bluegrass?” It’s not a disparaging one that condemns current styles in the genre but rather asks\, “Why do we love this music in the first place” and answers with an approach that is true to the originators of the genre in the sense of both style and philosophy. Bluegrass is raw emotion\, excitement\, drive\, and authenticity. It is not sanitized or compromised but a reflection of the lives of those who play it. It’s storytelling that follows a throughline of tradition. \n  \nThanks to our sponsors: Yee-Haw Brewing\, ORNL Federal Credit Union\, and Garza Law. \n
