SUMMARY:First Friday Live - 12/12 - Ben McLaughlin
DESCRIPTION:Ben McLaughlin offers music that sounds like an electrified awakening earned within a psychedelic-folk odyssey. \nAt his core\, McLaughlin is a songwriter\, tethered to the ethers as much as his human vessel; an audible translator from his small corner of the universe. Sewn throughout his newest batch of songs\, is the mourning of the inevitable winds of change through Self and family structures\, the walking hand-in-hand with one’s own inner child\, and at the end of it all\, coming to a place of peace with how things are now. \nA multi-instrumentalist and audio engineer\, he self-produces the songs he has written within the meditative state\, weaving together melodic thoughts of self- and environmental-dissection with organic production. Reminiscent of a time when vinyl was king\, the final results extends an open hand to the listener to experience an authenticity that allows them to lovingly transcend to their own higher essence.

SUMMARY:First Friday Live - 11-7 - Sophie Gault
DESCRIPTION:Sophie Gault has always been a little unhinged. A Nashville-based Americana rocker with a midnight voice and an eye and ear for last call rock and roll\, she writes songs that swagger\, stumble\, wink\, and bleed. With her third full-length album\, Unhinged\, Gault triples down on the risk-taking drive that has revved her from dive bars to the big tents\, crafting a record that feels at once deeply personal and side-eye defiant. \nUnhinged is a dare. A fast\, reckless\, one-eye-open ride through cow-punk Buck Owens\, punked-up Robert Johnson\, outlaw cruise mischief\, shipwreck coins\, blackjack tables\, and backroom heartbreak. It’s the sound of someone doubling down on 17 when everyone screams “No!”—and winning. It’s the smell of whiskey and Monte Cristos at 2 AM; the taste of cheap red wine mixed with heat lightning\, then you cross a forbidden line while laughing to the stars. \nBorn with a restless streak that fuels musical infernos\, Gault quickly found her place among the city’s creative underground. Over the years\, her biting songwriting and electric live presence have made her a name to circle on the Americana scene\, praised for both her razor-edged honesty and her sly sense of humor. The songs on Unhinged twist between the sly revenge of “Merlot Dodge Dart\,” the fingerpicked confession of “Chestnut St\,” the cocky sway of the title track\, and the tender\, water-lit ache of “Is There Anyone Out There\,” sung with Gurf Morlix himself. \nTradition gets honored\, flipped\, and satisfyingly kicked over—from classic Nashville to Robert Johnson to the ballad from Gurf that no one else would think to touch. Across ten tracks\, Gault raises a glass to the chaos of life\, leans into the messiness of desire and reinvention\, and proves that the most outlaw thing you can do is trust your gut and live with the outcome. \nDirty guitars snarl like a late-night confession\, and grooves pull you headlong into the storm. Her voice can smolder one moment and cut like a Katana the next—raw yet deliberate\, wild yet anchored in a truth that refuses to apologize. \nWith Unhinged\, Sophie Gault has solidified her place as one of Nashville’s most compelling voices\, an artist who isn’t afraid to take chances and tell the truth—even when it stings\, even when it doesn’t wrap up neatly. It’s the sound of a songwriter who has stopped caring about fitting into boxes\, and scoffs at boxes altogether. Above all: life is too short to play it safe. Raise a glass\, place your bet\, and get a little Unhinged.

SUMMARY:First Friday Live - 9/5 - Ross Cooper
DESCRIPTION:It’s fitting that Ross Cooper would be the first to record a full-length live album in The Boot Shop at Hotel Turkey–by all means\, he was their first Boot Shop Sessions guest. A tried-and-true West Texas native\, Cooper’s songs resonate with the ethos of the Cowboy Spirit—old and new. \n“I only ever wanted to be a cowboy and play music\,” says Cooper. Well\, if the boot fits. Committed to preserving those sentiments\, Cooper’s Panhandle vernacular and rugged\, intimate storytelling are deeply rooted in familial ties. He owes much to his parents\, rodeo royalty in their own right\, who instilled in him a delicate balance of grace and grit that’s reflected not just in his storytelling songs\, but in his very character. \nHis heroes have always been cowboys. \nJune 20th was the Summer Solstice—the longest day of the year. Truth be told\, we all wish it could have lasted just a little while longer. Still\, that extra bit of sunlight seemed to stretch time and space\, allowing memories to settle into each note played and song sung. A gentle\, calming breeze swayed outside as Cooper\, flanked by confidants Mike Dunton and Cheyenne Medders\, delivered stirring renditions of favorites such as “Everybody Wants To Be A Cowboy\,” “I Rode the Wild Horses\,” and “Love Like The Old Days\,” all in front of an audience of friends and family—those muses who inspired Cooper to write these cowboy and love songs in the first place. \nDistractions be damned. Nary a cough\, sigh\, or sneeze broke the silence as Cooper and company played\, their shadows cast on the peeling tan walls behind them\, while their boots softly tapped on the weathered concrete floor of The Boot Shop. Undoubtedly stifling\, especially for Cooper under the lights and amid the summer swelter\, a welcoming intermission eased the evening’s nerves as everyone made their way to the hotel’s cantina for a round of beer and whiskey pours. \nAs golden hour lingered on\, the low buzz of the glowing Boot Shop’s neon sign ushered everyone back inside. While Cooper’s tone often harkens back to a way of life thought to be escaping the world\, in pockets like Turkey\, Texas\, that life endures\, strong and mighty as ever. Still\, while Cooper doesn’t solely focus on the past and nostalgia’s rosy gleam\, the amber beams and blush of a West Texas sunset beautifully illuminate those memories in a resounding fashion.\nThank you!

SUMMARY:First Friday Live - 5/2 - Mic Harrison with Kevin Abernathy
DESCRIPTION:I’d rather see Mic Harrison and the High Score perform than just about any band on the planet. \nThat’s not just because Mic and the guys have a couple of road cases full of great songs or they’re journeyman musicians who’ve been a part of some of the best bands to come out of the South. It’s because every time I go to a Mic Harrison and the High Score show\, I know I’m going to walk in and see guys who look like they’re having so much fun on stage that it can’t help but spill out into the audience. I know I’m going to walk out at the end the night feeling better about the world with great rock ‘n’ roll and honky tonk songs playing over and over in my head. \nLead singer and rhythm guitarist Mic Harrison\, lead guitarist Robbie Trosper\, bassist Vance Hillard\, and guitarist Kevin Abernathy have a chemistry that can only come from long-term friendships and shared experiences. Harrison\, who started his young adulthood working in a saw mill in Bradford\, Tenn.\, a town so small it barely shows up on the map between Memphis and Jackson. He moved to Knoxville in the 1990s to become co-lead singer-songwriter (with Scott Miller) in The V-Roys\, a band that defined “Americana” before it was genre. After that group split\, he teamed with Trosper in the short-lived favorites The Faults and\, later\, teamed with Coffey in the now legendary power pop act Superdrag. When Superdrag ended\, Harrison enlisted established Knoxville rock act The High Score to back up a tour and the chemistry was so good that the partnership never ended. \nIn the past 12 years or so\, Mic and the guys have traveled the country\, performing at festivals from Bonnaroo to Easyriders Rodeos\, headlining bills from concert halls to the stickiest bars\, opening shows for everyone from Billy Joe Shaver to Huey Lewis and the News to ZZ Top\, and recording a terrific single with classic country singer Con Hunley. \nI’ve been lucky enough to experience Mic Harrison and the High Score perform about 50 times. I expect to see them at least 50 more. In the world today\, you need something that’s guaranteed to make you feel good that won’t hurt you – aside from a little soreness from swaying and dancing. \nI consider Mic Harrison and the High Score mental health food. \nThank you!

SUMMARY:First Friday Live - 12/6 - Sarrenna
DESCRIPTION:Persevering through a period of personal struggle\, Sarrenna emerged more resolute and equipped with an unflinching collection of tracks detailing her experience. Initially recorded as a stark yet stunning acoustic suite\, the difficult subject matter was assuaged by the native East Tennessean’s raspy vocals and supple guitarwork.\nNow\, reinforced with a full backing band and given lush studio treatment\, these songs have been transformed from tempered heartbroken laments into empowered kiss-off anthems fortified with rich instrumentation and resonant harmonies. The already tuneful material is newly robust and exhibits noticeably more venom\, which better complements the incisive wit inherent in the artist’s confessional lyrics and more effectively amplifies the themes of emancipation\, connectivity and healing located therein.\nFinding both solace and inspiration in the works of luminous peers like Madi Diaz\, Julia Jacklin and Laura Marling\, Sarrenna has embarked upon the path toward self-actualization through the fabrication of her own dynamic music – a distinctive tapestry of genres and influences that recalls classic country\, Americana and indie rock in equal measure. It is the burgeoning performer’s stated goal to provide similar refuge for anyone who feels alone\, dissociated or small in the presence of others. \n \n

SUMMARY:First Friday Live - 11/1 - Adeem The Artist
DESCRIPTION:Adeem Maria (they/them/theirs) is a seventh-generation Carolinian\, a makeshift poet\, singer-songwriter\, storyteller\, and blue-collar Artist. They began toiling at their instrument in 2002 when their family relocated to Syracuse\, NY and used songwriting as a vehicle to process the ensuing culture shock\, their faith\, and later their journey through apostasy. \nBlending a homegrown affection for Country Music with the emotional ballyhoo of alternative folk in the early aughts\, they have created a unique brand of Americana that pays homage to John Prine and John Darnielle (of The Mountain Goats) in equal parts. \nOn Cast-Iron Pansexual\, they received praise from Rolling Stone & American Songwriter for their work exploring identity across coalescing subcultures. Traveling to Carolina to get their Tarot read while straddling the duality of being a “blue collar boy” who is a “complicated dame\,” Adeem excavates unwonted stories of the forgotten south. \nAfter touring with American Aquarium and opening for acts like Will Hoge\, Emily Wolfe\, & Jaime Wyatt\, they launched the “Redneck Fundraiser\,” to finance their new album. In a matter of a few weeks\, they raised over $15\,000 to work with an all-star cast of musicians on their upcoming record for a release in late 2022.
