SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special - 6/25 - Robinella
DESCRIPTION:Robinella’s career began with a sort of luck that rarely comes to most artists within their lifetime. What started out as a simple husband-and-wife duo fresh out of college quickly grew to a full-fledged band that blended Bluegrass\, Country and Jazz. The combination of Robinella’s honey-sweet vocals with violin\, mandolin\, bass\, drums and piano captivated audiences\, thus creating the ever popular Robinella & the CC Stringband. \nThey released their first album\, self-titled Robinella and The CC Stringband\, in 2000\, which quickly followed\, No Saint\, No Prize in 2001. Both were on the independent label Big Gulley Records. With a few simple twists of fate\, what followed was a whirlwind of rapid success – Columbia Records liked what they heard and signed Robinella in 2002. The label took seven songs from the band’s two prior albums and released them as the CD Blanket for My Soul and then released a full album in 2003\, Robinella and the CC Stringband. This led to a national tour including opening for such artists as Bob Dylan\, Willie Nelson\, Earl Scruggs\, Nickel Creek\, Robert Earl Keen\, Kasey Chambers\, Del McCoury and Rodney Crowell as well as an appearance on “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” and a music video on CMT for their hit single\, “Man Over”. She also performed on NPR’s “Mountain Stage\,” appeared on the Grand Ole Opry and performed on PBS’s “SoundStage.” In 2006\, Robinella was nominated for “Emerging Artist of the Year” at the Americana Music Awards and released her fourth album\, “Solace for the Lonely”\, on Dualtone Records in Nashville. \nBut then life\, as it has a tendency to do\, threw a few curveballs her way. She became a mom and a couple of years later\, she and her husband/musical partner split up with a new record almost completed. Exhausted and somewhat disillusioned with the industry and its promises\, it was time to regroup\, redefine and get back to her roots. So she returned to her home\, the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains\, and got back in touch with what she truly wanted – love\, family\, friendship\, music\, art\, truth. \nWith that comes her latest release\, “Fly Away Bird”\, her most mature work. However\, within the melancholy and touches of sadness there is not true despair. For such a voice — that dazzling\, warm\, bright-as-summer-sunshine soprano — to even communicate it would most likely defy certain laws of emotional physics. DESCRIPTION:Evie Andrus has spent most of her adult life adding tasty licks to other people’s projects\, adding just the right ingredient to make a piece of music sound its best. With the release of her first album under her own name\, “Evie’s Great Adventure\,” the fiddler/vocalist ready to deliver the main course. \nThe new album is flat-out feel-good music delivered with the same heart and soul that’s made Evie a popular performed all across the Southeast. \nMaybe you caught her bands Barefoot Sanctuary or Buffalo Fiasco\, or heard her backing up renowned cellist Dave Eggar\, irreverent singer-songwriter Roger Alan Wade\, or performing at the Big Ears Festival with improvisational great Lonnie Holley\, or maybe you spotted her backing up Foreigner on a short tour. There’s also the possibility that you heard her music on the HBO series “The Outsider” or saw her appearance on “American Ninja Warrior.” \nBorn in Fargo\, N.D. and raised in Minot\, N.D.\, Evie began playing fiddle at six years old in her father’s band Crossroads\, but she was already a stage veteran. She first performed on stage at the age of 3\, blowing a train whistle\, on one of her father’s songs. \nWhen Evie was in the 4th grade\, her father started a family band called Family Ties\, which included her father on banjo and her brother Joe on bass. Mom ran sound for the group. \n“Our thing was to wear funny ties\,” says Evie. “My favorite was a rubber Swiss cheese tie … In the summer\, we were out and about. We played a lot around North Dakota\, South Dakota\, Minnesota and Canada\, Good Sam conventions and re-enactments\, fur trade re-enactments.” \nWho even knew there were “fur trade” re-enactments? \nAll through high school\, Evie performed in bluegrass bands and her high school orchestra\, but she didn’t have a lot in common with her classmates. \n“I grew up in a very bluegrass-centric family\,” she says. “Plus\, we had no TV. My entertainment was listening to (vintage radio shows) ‘Sherlock Holmes\,’ ‘Dragnet’ and ‘Inner Sanctum.’” \nEvie later attended North Dakota State University\, majoring in athletic training\, and playing in a group called Ironwood and\, later\, Sisters of the North on the side. It was an encounter with East Tennessee bluegrass act Blue Moon Rising that made Evie decide to move to East Tennessee. She moved to Johnson City\, Tenn.\, and landed a scholarship in the East Tennessee State University bluegrass program. \n“My first fiddle teacher there was (former Bluegrass Boys’ fiddler) Tater Tate\,” says Evie. “I couldn’t believe I was getting a scholarship to take lessons from Tater Tate!” \nWhile in Johnson City she worked at the Acoustic Coffee House\, working as a server and making music. She was a regular at late-night jam sessions and later became a favorite player to accompany singer-songwriters. \n“It was a different approach to music than what I had done before\,” says Evie. “It was kind of freeing in a way.” \nAfter a graduation\, Evie returned to North Dakota for few years before taking a music job in with the Hatfield & McCoy Dinner Show in Pigeon Forge\, Tenn. \nAfter a year and a half of dinner shows\, Evie leaned into teaching and playing with a variety of bands and musicians and then founded Barefoot Sanctuary\, which later became Buffalo Fiasco. A gig with Lonnie Holley at the Big Ears Festival led to Evie getting a call from HBO to be part of the limited series “The Outsider.” \n“The scene at the festival with the fiddle tunes\, that’s me!” says Evie. “I’m blurry in the background\, but it was really awesome.” \nAs a side person\, Evie says she’s always known where she fits. \n“I call myself a Jell-O player\,” says Evie. “There’s always room for Jell-O. It fills in all the cracks.” \nWith the release of “Evie’s Great Adventure\,” though\, she knows where she fits as well. \n“I’m really excited to get my true musical voice out more\,” says Evie. “In an odd way\, it took the pandemic to make me take time to find my voice. Now I want to share my love of music and adventure. It’s not earth shattering. It’s something people can put on and just have a great afternoon.” \n \nThe Bourbon Man is a one man band from Belarus. Rised from the ash of WhiskeyJamBand The Bourbon Man plays his dirthy blues on cigar box guitar and bass drum\, screaming vocals and other strange stuff.

Patrick Morelli started the indie folk project known as “dayes” in 2022 in Boston\, MA. dayes is inspired by Morelli’s love for alternative rock bands like Dispatch and Mt. Joy combined with his love for folk artists such as Caamp\, The Lumineers\, and Chadwick Stokes. The hope of this project is to remind the listeners that we’re all in this together. dayes debut album comes out this summer\, June 2025. Thank you all for being here and supporting the music! \n \nGrit has forever seeped from the pores of country rocker Will Wesley\, a grit that has materialized as life has punched him from every angle\, often forcing the kid from Louisiana to take his anger out on the strings of his beat-up guitar. \nBorn in the picturesque town of Baker\, Louisiana\, Wesley was born with a rebellious spirit. He never loved playing by the rules and didn’t particularly like the word ‘no.’. In fact\, the word alone would drive him to do the exact opposite of what everyone wanted him to do. \nHe started sneaking into bars at the age of 15\, often using his beard to fool everyone to think he belonged there. But once he stepped on stage with the beat-up guitar his dad inspired him to play\, everyone went and ignored the fact that he legally wasn’t supposed to be there. \nHe was that good. \nFrom the start\, Wesley was drawn to the sorrowful sounds of the blues\, and his natural talents within the genre began to speak loudly. Originally planting his boots into the dirt of the Baton Rouge blues scene\, the musical rebel began touring behind the likes of legends such as Larry Garner\, Tabby Thomas\, and Grady Champion. At the same time\, he began racking up the accolades\, and won the New Orleans regional division of the International Blues Challenge not once…but twice. \nWesley also went and served as the Music Director for Grammy-winning Blues Artist Grady Champion for 5 years\, and for a time\, it was as if the road in which he would build a life on was being paved for him. \nBut at a time when Wesley should have felt his most content\, he found himself at a crossroads\, both personally and professionally. Being torn from every angle eventually resulted in Wesley falling into a dark depression that had him contemplating the unthinkable. Florian will kicked off the year with his single “Home” published on January 24\, 2025. \nFlorian Fox is 2024 Texas Sounds International Country Music Award “Entertainer of the Year” and a voting member of the Country Music Association (CMA) in Nashville TN. DESCRIPTION:Some things are just meant to last. When Sarah Anderson and Paul DeHaven met and began playing together in 2004\, they had no idea just how deep the well of their musical partnership would prove to be. After the disbanding of indie-folk sweethearts Paper Bird\, the duo founded Heavy Diamond Ring and never looked back. HDR is the culmination (thus far) of their signature sound\, a fountain of open-hearted\, folk-rock\, steeped in vocal harmony and group synergy. Led by Anderson’s smooth-as-honey vocals and DeHaven’s rugged guitar chops\, the band has been described as “open-road\, long drive music”\, having “a little bit of twang\, and a whole lot of beef”\, and their live show as “infectious and contagious”. The band is rounded out by veteran knockouts Blake Stepan (bass)\, Mike Lang (keys)\, and Orion Tate Ignelzi (drums). Their second full-length LP\, “All Out of Angels”\, out this fall\, was produced by Ben Wysocki (the Fray) and Mark Anderson and features a duet with Nathaniel Rateliff. DESCRIPTION:The love of early 20th century American roots music is very apparent with Oak Hill Drifters\, who are based out of Orlando\, Florida. Their music and performance echos the 1940’s – 1960’s paying homage to some of the great pioneers of that early American roots music. \n​The band’s current iteration was formed in 2014 that includes Rachel Decker\, Craig Roy\, George Dimitrov and Tom Pearce whose collective resumes include work with The HoneyBees (Chicago)\, Nick Curran\, Hindu Cowboys and Rocket-88 (Orlando). ​​Rachel Decker fronts the band with a vocal prowess that has drawn comparisons to the likes of Janis Martin and Patsy Cline.​ \n​In 2016\, the band released its debut 11 song compilation\, “Fly Off The Panhandle.” The band’s sophomore recording\, “Lied To Me” was released in June 2018. \nIn late 2022\, Oak Hill Drifters released a (5) song EP titled “The Iris Sessions” that was produced by Billy Chapin whose accolades include recordings with Edwin McCain\, Sister Hazel and Don Henley. The release received critical acclaim both within the United States and abroad. The EP debuted at #26 on the Relix/jambands.com radio charts. The EP also climbed to #88 on the AMA Americana Albums chart and remained in the top 125 for multiple months in 2023.

DESCRIPTION:When you think about Bluegrass music\, you don’t think about grand emotional and spiritual journeys that pierce your soul; yet that is exactly what Ettore Buzzini is creating with his innovative\, classical-infused American bluegrass music. \nTo the casual listener\, Ettore’s sound is simply hard-driving Bluegrass. But anyone who listens a little more closely will quickly notice that Ettore’s unique music intersects the iconic acoustic sounds of Americana\, youthful energy and hard drive of pop-rock\, and emotional journeys of classical romantic music. Imagine if Earl Scruggs\, Led Zeppelin\, and Chopin got together on stage: it might sound something like Ettore’s music. \nMulti-award winning young Swiss-American songwriting and banjo prodigy Ettore has a decidedly GenAlpha take on traditional Bluegrass\, rooted in tradition\, but with a innovative\, colorful playing style that is irresistibly distinct\, and a songwriting style completely outside the mainstream. His unique\, fresh style that appeals to non-bluegrass youth is a product of his roots on both sides. He was imbued with the classical tradition while living with his family in Italian-speaking Switzerland\, as a toddler. At age 6\, his Tennessee grandfather introduced him to Flatt & Scruggs\, and he was hit by bluegrass like a lightning bolt. He begged his parents for a banjo for nearly 3 years until\, at age 9\, they relented. Ettore’s love for banjo expanded across the generational iterations of bluegrass. He devoured the traditional bluegrass classics\, while also becoming enthralled by the power of classical music\, inspired by his Swiss grandparents’ sacred choir. Ettore made a name for himself at youth competitions in the Blue Ridge Mountains with his prodigious banjo picking style as well as his mastery of flatpicking guitar. He then revealed a completely new level of artistry at just 11 years old\, when he won the Kruger Brothers’ Young Songwriter’s Contest\, with an original banjo and lyrical composition about the Norse mythology of Ragnarok. By age 14\, he had released his first album\, after being approached by legendary bluegrass record label Patuxent Records. He has performed with bluegrass legends Pete Wernick\, Danny Paisley\, Sideline and many others. He has performed at celebrated festivals such as Merlefest and FloydFest\, PBS’s Woodsongs\, and more. At age 16\, competing against industry professionals\, he won the prestigious Fresh Grass Competition with his original composition\, “The Birth of Eros”\, a banjo instrumental with a classical romantic theme of a lost soul’s hope of redemption and love. \nEttore’s star is soaring in the Folk-Americana-Bluegrass scene\, where his unique\, virtuosic Between his prodigious technical skill\, unique lyrical themes and an infectious love of the music\, he may just succeed in turning GenAlpha into GenBlue.
