SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special — 10/15 — Music In Common / Leo Sawikin
DESCRIPTION:From the start\, concerts and unique live performance events have been the heartbeat of Music in Common. Our band is comprised of a rotating cast of all-star musicians and human beings who believe fervently in the power of music to connect people regardless of their differences. The venues we perform at are as diverse as the musicians in the band and the people in the audience. Festivals\, performing arts centers\, universities\, coffeehouses\, music clubs\, street corners\, houses of worship\, living rooms\, community centers\, and even a bomb shelter are just a sampling of the places where we’ve made music (see venue listing below). But the common denominator between them all is audience members connecting with one another\, leaving our shows inspired and hopeful (see testimonials below). \nMusic in Common’s genre-blending concerts showcase the many songs that have come out of our JAMMS sessions and other programs as well as originals written by band members and select covers aligned with the spirit of MIC to connect and uplift. The band tours as an acoustic duo all the way up to an eight-piece electric band and everything in between. \n \nNew York City is not known for being delicate\, but Manhattan-born singer-songwriter Leo Sawikin breaks that mold. His soulful explorations of life’s highs and lows\, of love’s exuberance and humbling loss\, take listeners on achingly familiar journeys. \nOn stage\, Leo is accompanied by his brother William Sawikin\, aka Professional Extra\, on keyboards\, drummer Max Yassky (Skorts /Abby Jeanne)\, bassist Nick Katz (BRKN LOVE) and Josh Cruz (Shyness / Blac Rabbit) on lead guitar. In the recording studio\, Leo and the band’s sound has been honed by master producer Phil Ek (Fleet Foxes / The Shins / Built to Spill)\, across three projects\, including the recently released EP\, The Edge of Everything\, as well as on his upcoming 2027 full length album. “Burning Love\,” the first single off this record\, is out now. \nIn 2024\, “Till You’re Somebody Else\,” the title track off Leo’s last album\, reached #1 on the Mediabase A/C Independent Artists Chart and #26 on Billboard’s AC Chart. Another highlight of that album was Leo’s most streamed track to date\, “The Same Mistakes\,” which still resonates with fans globally\, from the U.S. and U.K. to Brazil to Indonesia. Celeb Mix raved\, “…a low-slung\, softly gleaming guitar topped by Sawikin’s oh-so evocative voice\, at once tender and wistful…rolls into a delicious\, throbbing rhythm.” \nRecently\, Leo has toured the country opening solo for fellow singer-songwriter Jon McLaughlin at such storied venues as NYC’s City Winery and LA’s Troubadour. When he’s not on the road\, Leo and the band can be found playing the city’s small\, buzzy clubs and sought-after secret house parties. If you’re lucky enough to catch them\, you’ll be treated to ballads and bangers that bring an indie edge to a classic pop sensibility. In between gigs\, Leo can often be spotted at the Union Square Greenmarket\, sourcing the best ingredients for one of his famous pasta dinners.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special — 10/17 — Bristol Coon / Maya de Vitry
DESCRIPTION:Born and raised in Southern California\, Bristol Coon is a Nashville-based singer-songwriter who pulls influences from the sixties LA rock scene and vintage country music. He also has a foundation in jazz & blues which paints a colorful palette for this California Coastal Cowboy. \n \nOriginally from the green rolling hills of Lancaster County\, Pennsylvania\, Maya de Vitry is a Nashville-based fiddler-turned-songwriter with a voice that glides effortlessly between tenderness and strength. After a formative chapter of singing and songwriting with roots trio The Stray Birds (five recordings in eight years)\, she launched her solo career with her 2019 album Adaptations\, earning praise from Rolling Stone Country\, NPR Music\, and No Depression. Since then\, she has released three more full-length albums—How to Break a Fall (2020)\, Violet Light (2022)\, and The Only Moment (2024); an EP\, Infinite (2023); and multiple singles\, all of which are testaments to her personal reinvention and creative growth. \nEnergized by the spontaneity of live performance and a revelatory pursuit of truth in her lyric writing\, Maya de Vitry returns with her fifth full-length album\, All My Faith. Prioritizing presence and grit over studio polish\, she sounds joyously at home in the alt-country and indie-folk realms. Recorded and mixed by 5-time Grammy Award-winning engineer Sean Sullivan and self-produced by de Vitry\, All My Faith is a buoyant gathering of songs brought to life by a cast of her closest confidantes and collaborators. All My Faith will be released on de Vitry’s own Mad Maker Studio label on July 24. \n“I’d like my music to feel like you are invited into a lush living forest or into a remote river canyon where suddenly you are stripped of not only modern conveniences but also modern distractions. Where you can feel the essence of your own humanity and those around you. Where suddenly a stranger’s story becomes interesting\, or where you might choose teamwork and problem-solving and creativity over dogma. Where reciprocity and care start to feel more natural than just about anything else\,” she reflects. \nFrom canyons to kitchens\, from cold lakes to highway truck stops\, the songs form a vibrant collage of joy\, sorrow\, and gut-wrenching honesty. Whether spinning an inspirational tale about hungover bachelorettes at the Nashville airport or exploring the prison of our own adaptations\, de Vitry brings a grounded confidence and quiet charisma rooted in her belief in the power of song to change us.
