SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special – 9/18 – Roger Street Friedman
DESCRIPTION:Roger Street Friedman is still a believer in the idea that music can change hearts and minds. Over the past decade\, and during the course of four critically acclaimed albums\, the modern Americana singer-songwriter has become a prominent voice in addressing issues both societal and personal in ways that recall the leading music lights of the ‘60s and ‘70s. On his newest album\, Long Shadows\, Friedman trains his observant eye on recent and past events\, some close to home and others half a world away\, and in the tradition of other great storytellers\, he focuses on raw emotions – love\, anger\, dismay\, fear\, isolation and ultimately\, hope – in ways that make his points relatable to any listener.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special – 9/16 – Craig Marshall
DESCRIPTION:Craig Marshall‘s lengthy musical resume stretches back to his teen years performing with various combos in his hometown of Syracuse\, New York. SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special – 9/15 – Matt Axton ( Hoyt’s son! ) / Chuck Prophet & His Cumbia Shoes
DESCRIPTION:Matt Axton is a gifted singer/songwriter. Granted\, that’s a claim made by many artists that inhabit the world of Americana these days\, but in Matt’s case\, it’s more than a mere boast. The ability to make music is firmly infused in his genes\, courtesy of a family history that implanted that ability in him early on. \nWhile he modestly describes his sound as a “humble slice of Americana\,” it’s clear that it possesses so much more. With a style that encompasses country\, folk\, roots\, rock\, R&B\, and pure pop proficiency\, he defies easy categorization. With a rich reservoir of original tunes — over 300 in fact — and three well received albums (Blue Sky Rain\, Matthew C. Axton and Badmoon)\, he’s established himself as a prolific and proficient singer\, songwriter and guitarist\, both on his own and at the helm of his various ensembles. \nEven a small sampling of his musical output proves the point. His current single\, “Blue Sky Rain\,” the title track of his current album\, is both stirring and seductive\, an easy amble that belies its description of the topsy turvy travails that accompany the entanglements of relationships. \n“Born of Chains\,” culled from Badmoon\, is flush with steadfast determination\, a rugged\, relentless bluesy-rocker that conveys clear conviction and a desire to overcome whatever obstacles are tossed in his way. \n \nWake The Dead – California singer\, songwriter\, guitarist\, and producer Chuck Prophet’s new collaborative album with Cumbia group ¿Qiensave? – was released on October 25th through Yep Roc Records. \nAn extraordinary and unlikely pairing\, Prophet and ¿Qiensave? blend seamlessly together as the collection dives headfirst into the world of Cumbia music\, which consumed and comforted Prophet during a recent bout with stage four lymphoma and subsequent recovery. They also shared the album’s lead single and title track “Wake The Dead\,” an anthem that reckons with forces beyond our control while learning to let go\, a recurring theme at the core of the album. \n“I never want to be a downer\,” stated Prophet. “This record doesn’t shy away from darkness\, but it always feels hopeful. When I was growing up listening to The Clash and their flirtations with reggae\, the thing I remember most is how the music hit me\, how it made me feel. The more you listened\, the more was revealed\, but on the most fundamental level\, those records just felt good\, and that was really important to me with this album.” \nProphet’s fascination with Cumbia music began after experiencing a weekly Cumbia night at a local haunt of his in San Francisco’s Mission district. He quickly became obsessed: collecting old vinyl from Latin America\, studying its origins\, DJ’ing\, and loading his friends up with new mixes every time they came to visit. After he was diagnosed\, he had a lot of time to just sit and listen as he went through treatments. “I was going through a tunnel\,” he recalls. “It was dark. But I had music: music to play\, music to listen to\, music to get me out of my head. Music was my savior.” More than any other genre\, Cumbia served as a faithful musical companion and reprieve during his immunotherapy and chemotherapy. \nOnce he was finally feeling better\, Prophet started driving out to Salinas on a regular basis to jam with a group he’d fallen in love with called ¿Qiensave?\, a band of brothers from the Central Coast farming community. The sessions came together on a whim\, for the sheer fun of it at first\, but Prophet soon invited the band to back him up at a couple of live shows\, and the immediate reaction from audiences made it clear they were on to something special. \nProphet and ¿Qiensave? hit the studio soon afterwards\, where they blended with his longtime backing band\, The Mission Express\, to track the heart of Wake The Dead live on the floor. It was chaotic at times\, cramming as many as eight musicians into the same studio space\, but they prioritized gut feeling over sonic perfection and allowed the undeniable energy of the performances to guide them. \nThe result is a profoundly adventurous celebration of life that balances hope and fear in equal measure\, a rich and exultant meditation on what really matters from an artist who always manages to find the light\, even in the face of the most oppressing darkness. Prophet approaches the style not as an academic or historian\, but as a fan with a voracious appetite and an insatiable curiosity. The songs are intoxicatingly rhythmic\, all but demanding you move your body while you listen\, with arrangements that blur the lines between tradition and innovation\, between past and present\, between cultures and countries. There are flashes of rock and roll\, punk\, surf\, and soul\, all filtered through the streets of San Francisco and wrapped up in the rich legacy of a genre that traces its roots back hundreds of years and thousands of miles.

DESCRIPTION:Kelsey’s Woods is a three/four/more-piece Americana/Roots band hailing from the scruffy little city of Knoxville. Combining equal parts of roots\, country\, folk and a little rock and roll\, Kelsey’s Woods boasts three and four-part male harmonies\, interchangeable lead singers and all original songs speaking on themes from love\, heartbreak\, loss\, murder\, redemption\, and the age old tradition of finding salvation in a whiskey glass. SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special – 9/4 – B.B. Palmer / Pickers Anonymous
DESCRIPTION:Hailing from the heart of railroad country in Opelika\, Alabama\, cosmic country outfit B.B. Palmer have made a name for themselves over the past several years\, honing a sound steeped in the traditions of American country music. \nThe band’s latest offering\, Krishna Country\, sees the group approaching their craft with a much more expansive worldview — folding traditional Indian sounds into their work and creating a further-mesmerizing brand of ethereal roots music. On paper\, it might seem an unexpected or jolting shift in direction\, but for B.B. Palmer it’s simply the next step forward in their collective journey. \nMake no mistake\, this is still country music at its core\, but the addition of sitar and horns awash in reverb elevates the overall product to something more\, standing on its own as a truly unique output. Imagine if Ravi Shankar recorded with the Byrds backed by Stax’s Memphis Horns\, and you’d be pretty close to imagining this Alabama outfit’s forthcoming output. \n“I found a copy of the Bhagavad Gita\,” Palmer recalls. He pored over the text and found that it resonated with him on a deeply personal level. The book inspired Palmer to dive even deeper into Indian culture. He began listening to and studying raga: a classical style of Indian music. He applied these eastern influences in his own songcraft. Krishna Country Gold showcases his discoveries from this newfound styling\, blending his honky tonk roots with a yet-untapped well of musical modes & instrumentation from India. \nFrom the moment the Bhagavad Gita landed in Palmer’s possession\, to the first drafts of these news songs\, all the way through studio time and mastering\, Krishna Country Gold seemed inevitable despite all the perceived challenges that stood in the way. It’s an undeniably singular output from these Yellowhammer State mainstays\, and a worthy entry in the canon of cosmic “American” music — SWEETHEART PR \n \nPickers Anonymous is an old timey trio consisting of multi-instrumentalists Nicholas Edward Williams (American Songcatcher/The New Quintet)\, Owen Grooms (Travis Book String Band/Pretty Little Goat/Jenn and Owen) and John Benjamin Davis (John Hartford Fiddle Project/Susto String Band). Collecting traditional material and presenting it with their own eclectic filter\, Pickers Anonymous layers high lonesome harmonies on Appalachian sounds from Old-Time\, Bluegrass\, Early Country and Hillbilly Blues. Their debut record\, Patchwork\, is slated for release in late 2025 via EarthTone Records.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special – 8/30 – Night Hawk
DESCRIPTION:What is it like to lose yourself in a place that doesn’t love you back? \nMaybe it’s waves crashing on a cold beach after the tourists have gone home. Echoes from an old community center\, the backdrop to ill-fated dance lessons. The hum of the world passing by as you stare out the window of the commuter train. Before We Begin\, the debut full-length from Night Hawk\, lives in this unsettled soundscape where childhood memory flickers\, choices crystallize\, and windows and doorways are as vital as the paths behind them. \nEmerging from Portland\, Maine\, Night Hawk began as a songwriting experiment between Colter Adams (Indigo Boulevard) and Peyton Semjen to compose songs inspired by the painter\, Edward Hopper. The band quickly drew the attention of Northeast artists and audiences alike\, culminating in collaborations with the Whitney Museum of Art and the Edward Hopper House. With Before We Begin\, Adams and Semjen expand the scope of their music beyond Hopper’s world\, but remain fixated on his aesthetics: thresholds\, isolation\, and interplay between illuminating light and clouded intention. \nProduced by Colter and Colin Miller (Indigo De Souza\, MJ Lenderman) in Asheville\, N.C.\, Before We Begin features recorded contributions from Emma Chun (violin)\, Courtney Burnett (drums)\, Alex Kozic (guitar)\, and Shea Sewall (bass). The album is out on all platforms on August 7\, 2025. The band’s East Coast tour will begin in Portland\, ME on August 7 and conclude in Nashville\, TN on August 30.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special – 8/28 – Stripmall Ballads
DESCRIPTION:Stripmall Ballads is the haunted\, dust-blown project of Phillips Saylor Wisor\, a songwriter wandering the backroads between myth and memory. Drawing comparisons to Neil Young\, Bonnie “Prince” Billy\, and Maybelle Carter\, his work lives in the tension between Appalachian tradition and modern disillusionment—aching with spectral beauty\, dry wit\, and a bone-deep sense of longing. From early lo-fi masterworks like Since Jimmy Died to the sparse\, cinematic ache of Distant\, his songs are slow-burning dispatches from the heart of a fractured America—where ghosts speak in minor chords and resistance sounds like a hymn. Stripmall Ballads doesn’t just sing about forgotten places—it sings from them. \nPhillips Saylor Wisor – aka STRIPMALL BALLADS – is a Maryland-based rollicking musical rambler\, rife with story-songs rich in emotion and hardihood. His brand of folk music sings the heartbreaking ballads of old brick buildings\, vacant lots\, and rustbelt towns. Of third shift papas\, flood plains\, and long drives through nowhere towns. He’s boots on the ground\, guitar across the body\, ever observing the ugly mundane mixed with the beautiful chaos of this place we trample upon on the daily. \nHe’s shared stages with Tommy Prine\, John R. Miller\, Danny Barnes\, Les Claypool\, The Be Good Tanyas\, Willy Tea Taylor\, just to name a few. \nIn his early days\, Wisor found comfort in DC’s encampments searching for validation in the gritty corners of tucked away spaces. Where street people applauded and encouraged as he picked away\, a rustling sound of Americana and folk\, with boozed-up night chatter for background noise. \nAs founding member of The Shiftless Rounders\, Phillips dove deep into the Appalachian ocean of old time banjo and balladry. And as a fervent practitioner of Shape Note music\, he has spent countless hours singing in the “old way” and devouring the harmonic notions of American roots music. \nWith a nod to Woody Guthrie\, Phillips deploys all these influences in his music. Stripmall Ballads is a testament to the enduring power of painting experience with emotion\, forever a voice of the strange amongst strangers.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special – 8/27 – Dallas Ugly
DESCRIPTION:Nashville’s Dallas Ugly are an indie rock band of truly trusted friends\, a trio who have been singing each other’s songs for over a decade. Three distinctive voices: guitarist Owen Burton observes humanity at a wry remove\, chuckling\, multi-instrumentalist Libby Weitnauer lifts personal experience up into catchy tunes\, and bassist Eli Broxham gracefully snakes through the low end on his more melancholy contributions. Together they’ve forged an ironclad\, sibling-like bond\, daring each other to ever increasing heights. Their listeners – lucky – get the overlap of their Venn diagram\, the best of their crop\, otherwise known as “See Me Now\,” their sophomore album. \nThough they first started playing each other’s songs back in their Chicago undergrad days\, Dallas Ugly officially formed in 2020 when Owen\, Libby\, and Eli took a chance on relocating to Nashville. Owen had been living in Senegal serving in the Peace Corps\, Libby had established herself as an in-demand musician in New York City\, and Eli was playing on frequent bluegrass and country gigs in Illinois – reunited in the Music City\, they got to work\, shaping both Dallas Ugly and the local scene while playing with a slew of other Nashville artists. Their 2022 debut LP “Watch Me Learn” flirted with the boundaries of Americana – Libby’s vibrant fiddle playing\, Eli’s more down-home basslines\, a smattering of pedal steel. The record garnered listeners and acclaim. Under the Radar Magazine remarked the band “creates their own style full of shimmering magic\, crafting a work of fractal guitars\, pastoral melodies\, and glowing harmonies.” For the Rabbits noted a “depth and togetherness that’s a true calling card.” \nBut the trio leveled up in a serious way when they started collaborating with producer and engineer Justin Francis\, a straight-up Grammy winner who works with new classic songwriters like Madison Cunningham and Sarah Jarosz. He’s coaxed out a broad sonic palette – layers of jangly electric guitars\, an insistent drum sound\, tasteful OP-1 synth twinkles – while still allowing plenty of room for Dallas Ugly’s impeccable melodies and crackling violin lines. The trio plays beautifully and energetically\, they dig in and stop on a dime\, their voices in close intervals soar over breaks and the occasional measure of 2/4. Libby puts it well: “As a band\, I think we really just let it rip on this one – we tried to just make sounds and choices that we thought were cool without thinking too much about what was ‘right.’” It’s a delicious combo of studio polish and pure musical instinct. \nThe record is contemporary\, crisp\, and alive\, full of first cracks at insightful songs captured through live takes – just the kind of thing you might hear leaping out of a Fresh Finds playlist. The lyrics\, too\, feel particularly of the current moment – the title track evokes a not-too-distant economic collapse and throughout the record the three songwriters grapple for sure footing in an unstable world. “See Me Now” feels like a part of the current band-with-guitars renaissance\, in alignment with touring acts like Big Thief\, MJ Lenderman\, or songwriter Allegra Krieger. They’d be right at home on the bill at one of Wilco’s summer festivals or opening for Lucinda Williams\, heroes that bridge tradition and now. And it’s rare these days to hear a band so effectively channel the thoughtful toe-tapper anthems that used to be all over late 90s radio\, the kind of well-crafted\, open-hearted music to which you can’t help but sing along. With their new producer in the mix\, “See Me Now” shows brilliant shades of “Wide Open Spaces\,” the romantic swoon of Sixpence None the Richer and the Cranberries\, the chorused guitars of an REM track\, the bop-along charm of a Gin Blossoms heater. And yes\, Sheryl Crow is also a solid point of listening reference\, which is no surprise – she counts Justin Francis among her studio collaborators. \nThe record opens with a Southern-Rock-adjacent bopper whose insistent choruses explode. And then the album takes off running\, skipping through vocalists\, protagonists\, and genres\, all bolstered with tremendously melodic bass playing. “Best Behaviour” rolls the windows down while the band gleefully saws away while “Doing Good” transforms the apprehensions of the world falling apart into a gratitude anthem strummed on a rubber bridge guitar. “Circumstances” sprints at a panting pace\, shimmering\, followed by “Out of Sight\,” a charming\, hangdog vocal delivered by Eli. Other highlights: the sticky sweet\, rueful yearning of “Sugar Crash\,” the poignant\, sad joke shuffles courtesy of Owen on tracks eight and nine. Closer “Thin Skin” – drumless and extra tender after nine groovers – features achingly lovely vocals from Libby that echo out in plate reverb over nylon string chords. Stripped away of the rest of the band\, the song underlines just how interconnected and locked-in the trio is on the rest of the album. A song about falling down\, standing up\, then appreciating the growth and humility afforded to you after you make contact with the ground. These themes are heard elsewhere throughout the record’s other songs – shouting out the hardships that formed you\, thanking the heavens for vulnerability and the good love of friends that set you on your path forward. I’m back on my feet\, they seem to sing\, can you see me now?

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special – 8/26 – Dakota Ray Parker / June Star
DESCRIPTION:Dakota grew up in Hillsboro\, Kentucky exploring the mountains\, playing in the creeks and living in a land of true freedom. Goats\, pigs\, packs of dogs\, you name it. But here and there\, times were tough\, back and forth to foster homes\, alcoholism and poverty. “The feeling of being housed with strangers as a kid…you’ll grow up real quick…and its lonely” Parker says. But everything seemed to change when his parents got him a guitar in 2011\, lifting him out of reality into a new world where Parker learned to channel what he felt\, a world that felt like home. \nHis first songs were inspired by the local bluegrass players\, 1990s country and southern gospel. At the age of 18\, after his mothers passing\, Dakota was offered a job in Indiana at an RV repair business. With one hour to decide\, off he went with $40 in his pocket. Job after job\, factory after factory\, Dakota did not feel like he found his place. In 2023\, Parker quit his job to go all-in on music. “Only thing that gave me a sense of importance as a kid\, was music…so thats what I’m gonna do.” Parker says. \nHis first single\, “Rebel on the Run\,” quickly made waves and received radio airplay internationally. Two EPs\, “Kentucky Gap” and “Higher Ground\,” painted pictures of his turbulent upbringing while developing his identity as an up-and-coming Americana artist. His songs range from hauntingly empty to pulsing arrangements. With his Appalachian drawl and conviction for emotional honesty in songwriting\, Parker plays in a way that honors the local musicians and the upbringing that made him. Now living in north central Indiana and raising a family of his own\, he continues to tour around Indiana. Now in 2025\, Parker plans to release his first debut album. \n \nThe Late Spring from June Star arrives in late fall to stoke our fires for the oncoming winter. Bristling with the heat of a barely contained fire\, June Star’s confessional country rock invites us in to battle the blaze or find close comfort dancing to keep warm. Baltimore based June Star has been the primary musical outlet for Andrew Grimm since 1998. The Late Spring showcases June Star’s bar band chops over heartbroken laments. \nAlbum opener\, “Heaven Only Knows\,” finds Grimm admitting to\, “thinking of you when I shouldn’t be.” It’s an open road windows down thinking country rock tune that could slip into the midst of a Son Volt or Bottle Rockets set. “Waiting on You” expands the record’s sonic landscape with horns\, piano\, and a prominent pedal steel’s mournful wanderings. “Tired of waiting for wishes you wish\,…there ain’t much here a fire won’t fix\,” sings Grimm to introduce us to a “Long Low Simmering Kiss” – a plodding drive alongside a James McMurtry sing-talking baritone. “Used to You” introduces prominent female vocals by Katie Feild to the mix over a mellowed “We Will Rock You” drum beat\, a thumping bass\, and haunting pedal steel. “When the end comes we’ll clearly see what was want and what was need\, I’m getting used to you\, I’m getting used to you\,” their voices intertwine. \n“Boys in Trouble” introduces us to a sorry state of affairs\, “burning up all the things that you love\, is not the same thing as giving up\, someday you’ll find yourself alone…the sad truth is right under your nose and from the bottle to your blood stream it goes.” Though the circumstances may seem unfortunate\, “Boys in Trouble” is a beautiful ballad brimming with sincerity in the midst of a simple yet precise arrangement delicately delivered from seasoned players’ hands. Electric guitars return on “New Moon” as does a sense of renewal and optimism in the lyrics. “I Might Fall” builds on this energy as Grimm sings over a guitar driven groove twist on Tom Petty and Heartbreakers’ Mike Campbell’s guitars in “Listen to Her Heart\,” “I can’t remember where I slept\, but I dreamt from you\, you were telling me it’s all right\, you know what to do.” The Late Spring closes with “Heaven Please” – a sweet dessert after the band’s main offering.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special – 8/25 – Kristina Murray
DESCRIPTION:“I’ve been to some pretty low places these last ten years\,” Kristina Murray confesses. “Faced a lot of heartbreak and loss and grief\, but you have to learn to live with those things if you’re going to survive. You have to persevere.” \nThat spirit of perseverance forms the bedrock of Murray’s stunning new album\, Little Blue. Recorded with producers Misa Arriaga and Rachael Moore\, the collection grapples with loneliness\, desperation\, and existential crises through a series of cinematic snapshots of small-town burnouts and last call lovers. Murray is a country artist in the truest sense\, a genuine craftswoman with a keen eye and ear for the little details that bring her working-class characters to life\, and her delivery is timeless\, blurring the lines between the old school honky-tonk\, swampy Americana\, and R&B-infused southern rock she grew up on in her home state of Georgia. If Murray sounds like a seasoned vet on Little Blue\, that’s because she is. While the album marks her Normaltown debut\, Murray’s spent the last decade since moving to Nashville paying her dues in an endless series of dive bars and juke joints\, and the result is an electrifying introduction to an artist only just beginning to get the kind of wider recognition her talent has long warranted. \n“Country music is having a moment right now\, and of course I’m thrilled to be a part of that\,” Murray reflects. “But even when that moment passes\, I’ll still be making it. This genre’s a never-ending treasure chest of discoveries. Country music is who I am.” \nBorn and raised in Atlanta\, Murray first fell in love with country music at the age of five\, when she heard Patsy Cline’s Greatest Hits on cassette in her momma’s car. After self-releasing her debut album in 2013\, she moved to Nashville\, quickly finding her place in the community as she helped establish the now-legendary Honky Tonk Tuesdays series and became one of the first women to front a band at Santa’s Pub. \n“I wanted to surround myself with great writers and players so I could grow as an artist\,” Murray explains. “It’s funny to look back now and realize how little I knew when I first got to town\, but I was confident\, I’ll say that\,” she laughs. \nMurray worked multiple jobs at a time to pay for her sophomore album\, Southern Ambrosia\, which landed on an array of Best Of lists and prompted Rolling Stone to declare her an Artist You Need To Know\, praising her sound as “country-rock with a deep\, poetic reverence for the land in which it was born.” The breakout critical acclaim didn’t translate to breakout success\, though\, and Murray soon found herself right back where she started\, unsure of where to go or what it all meant. \n“I felt stuck\,” she recalls. “My father died suddenly when I was 25\, a wound that never heals\, and through breakups\, car wrecks\, and just general brokenness\, all of which I was still processing when the whole world shut down in 2020. And while I’d had some brushes with notoriety and a few opportunities to tour in Europe and share bills with some fantastic artists over the years\, it just seemed like I was spinning my wheels getting nowhere.” \nSo Murray did what she always does when the going gets tough: she kept writing\, kept performing\, worked harder. \n“I just wrote and wrote and stockpiled songs for the right opportunity\,” she explains. “I knew I needed to level up\, and that meant finding the people who could help me get there.” \nFirst up was Misa Arriaga (Kacey Musgraves\, Wyatt Flores)\, who’d collaborated with Murray on a covers project in 2022 and eagerly signed on to help her record a full-length LP. It was around this same time that Murray met Rachael Moore (T Bone Burnett’s longtime engineer)\, who was so blown away by Murray’s live show that she invited her to come record in Muscle Shoals pro bono. \n“I wanted to work with both of them\,” Murray recalls\, “but with two different producers in two different studios\, I honestly wasn’t sure how it would all come together. Rather than worry about it\, though\, I tried to just trust in the songs and be as present as possible in the moment\, which helped me fall more in love with the process than ever before.” \nIn the end\, the dual producer setup proved to be perfect for capturing the two sides of Murray’s creative personality. Over a winter weekend in Muscle Shoals with Moore\, she and the band dug deep and chased sounds with meticulous focus and precision; over a spring weekend back in Nashville with Arriaga\, they were able to let loose and embrace a spirit of improvisation and discovery. \n“Both producers work in very different ways\, but their techniques turned out to be really complementary\,” Murray explains. “The songs were so cohesive when they all came together. It just felt totally natural and organic.” \n“A lot of the characters on this record are coming to terms with the fact that life just has a lot of sadness in it\,” Murray reflects. “But making peace with that sadness is what allows you to carry on and find joy and meaning and purpose.” \n“Our time here is so short on this little blue dot\,” Murray muses\, “too short for all the bullshit we get caught up in day to day. This whole record is dropping in and out of these little snippets of sadness in life\, but I wanted to end on this note of hope\, this reminder that you can still find love and beauty no matter how dark things may seem.” \nAll it takes is a little perseverance. \nAnthony D’Amato \n \n

SUMMARY:The WDVX Big Plate – 8/22 – Carolina Bluegrass Style
DESCRIPTION:Carolina Bluegrass Style is a unique blend of young and old\, past\, present\, and perhaps the future of bluegrass music. When Tommy Thomas asked Tyler Chasteen\, Don Ashley\, and David Prosser to get together and play some music\, they had no idea they would be creating a new group. Yet\, the popularity of the group has surpassed all expectations. While all the members of the band live in the Columbia\, SC area\, they have been honing their sound in restaurants\, clubs\, and other venues around Asheville\, NC. \nThe band’s eclectic mix of members has brought about a fusion of both musical styles and musical selections\, featuring a little of everything from old Western Swing music to Jazz\, Reggae\, and\, of course\, Traditional and Contemporary Bluegrass. The band has become known not only for their sound and mix of music but also for their warm and endearing stage presence that keeps people entertained and involved in what they do. \n### Let’s Meet the Band \n**Tommy Thomas** – The “foundation” man for the band\, Tommy has played Jazz\, Big Band\, and Classical before getting into bluegrass and playing with several local bands. He brought Carolina Bluegrass Style together\, and his rock-solid beat moves the sound with his walking lines. Inspired by legends like Tom Grey and Edgar Meyer\, Tommy is a key component of the band’s rhythm section. \n**Don Ashley** – Don plays the fiddle and serves as the Master of Ceremonies for the band. His charm\, wit\, and easygoing manner engage the crowd\, making them feel part of the performance. With a career spanning several bands\, Don’s powerful double-stop fiddle style and strong baritone lead voice make him a fun and captivating performer. \n**Tyler Chasteen** – Holding down both rhythm and lead guitar\, Tyler is the youngest member of the group. His talent is immense\, inspired by icons like Tony Rice\, Clarence White\, and Billy Strings. Tyler is not only an exceptional guitarist but also a strong singer\, with his lead and tenor voice fitting perfectly over the music that Carolina Bluegrass Style creates. \n**David Prosser** – Rounding out the ensemble is the banjo and dobro player. David has been playing since he was 17 and loves the music he plays. Whether it’s swing or hard-driving bluegrass\, David is always having a great time. With influences ranging from Earl Scruggs and Don Reno to Béla Fleck and Tony Trischka\, David is constantly learning and evolving his craft. \nThat’s the band\, or as we like to say…This is CBS!

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special – 8/20 – Maygen & The Bird Watcher
DESCRIPTION:The past few years have been quite a stir for the Minnesota progressive folk-rock-country sextet Maygen & The Birdwatcher. In late 2021 they released their debut full-length album\, Moonshine\, (which Americana UK wrote is “stunning”)\, earning them Midwest Country Music Awards for Album of the Year and Americana Artist of the Year) and landed opportunities to join festival stages with bands like Old Crow Medicine Show\, Paul Cauthen\, Grace Potter\, and even support a childhood favorite\, Travis Tritt. \nThey continued the momentum in late 2022\, releasing Moonshine’s companion EP\, with the “lively and charming” (Adventures in Americana) Bootleggin’ At The Flower Shoppe. With Maygen & The Birdwatcher taking home wins for the 2023 Album of the Year and Americana Artist of the Year at the Midwest Country Music Organization’s annual awards for Bootleggin’ At The Flower Shoppe. \nThe Americana folk band adventurously blurs the sounds of country\, bluegrass\, folk\, and blues. Lead singers Maygen Lacey\, and Noah Neumann intentionally work to draw on their vastly different musical influences and vocal styles to bring a fresh and unexpected mix of songs to light. From beauty to grit\, sadness to silliness\, the common thread is that this crew loves music\, and playing it together\, and it shows. \nIn October 2023\, Maygen & The Birdwatcher hosted and curated the inaugural Amerigrass Fest at The Hook and Ladder Theater & Lounge in Minneapolis. Maygen Lacey cherishes the special community of musical artists in the Midwest\, and looks forward to celebrating what each genre\, and fusion of genres can bring about at the new event Amerigrass Fest — “We are big fans of collaboration and love to play with the bands we share the stage with. Music is our love language and we’re very excited to play Amerigrass with the talented array of artists.” \nThat same year\, Maygen & The Birdwatcher teamed up with the South Dakota Grasslands Coalition\, a non-profit organization to help save North America’s most threatened ecosystem: its native grasslands. Together\, they released an original song and music video\, titled “Where Good Things Grow\,” that they hope will raise public awareness regarding the importance of grassland ecosystems and generate support for programs and activities to encourage farmers\, ranchers and state officials to develop programs and policies that preserve and restore the health of North America’s grasslands. The original song and music video for “Where Good Things Grow\,” have earned them the 2023 Video of the Year award from the Midwest Country Music Organization as well as 2023 Entertainer of the Year. \nMaygen & The Birdwatcher’s music is Americana that isn’t afraid to embrace eclecticism\, but it’s also firmly rooted in folk and country. To achieve their rich\, full sound\, the band fills out the sonic details\, with multi-instrumentalist Nik Pellinen adding banjo\, lap steel and electric guitar. Along with bassist Chase Rabideau\, who rounds out the bottom\, mandolin player Jesse Moravec\, who also contributes vocals\, fiddle player Evin Haukos\, and drummer-percussionist Peter Anderson create a new take on bluegrass-folk-country. It’s a hyphenated hybrid that can come only from a seasoned—and tightly knit—band. \nIt leaves music fans wanting to hear more as Maygen & The Birdwatcher leap forward this year\, and take their original music to the next level. \nMaygen & The Birdwatcher have released two single tracks— “Full Moons (Leap Year Session)” and “Jericho” from their forthcoming Leap Year EP available August 2\, 2024. Leap Year was recorded by Minnesota native\, acclaimed artist and guitarist-extraordinaire\, Erik Koskinen.
