DESCRIPTION:When it comes to his latest album\, In the Shadow of the Mountain\, 25-year-old singer-songwriter Cole Chaney is pretty candid and blunt about who he is and what kind of music he wants to make — the result of which\, this stunning offering from an artist wise beyond his age. \n“There’s a yin to every yang\,” Chaney says. “I want nothing more than for people to be creatively fulfilled\, and to do what they want. But\, for me to preach that? I have to practice it.” \nThat attitude resides at the core of the record\, where the trajectory of the songs seemingly — more so purposely — shoot off in the opposite direction of many of his contemporaries in the Americana\, country and folk music scenes. In truth? Chaney is summoning his rock roots. \n“I’m not concerned with being labeled as ‘country’.“There’s not a lot of music being released right now that is doing anything for me. I made something that I would want to listen to.” \nPointing to his lifelong admiration for 1990s rock — specifically Soundgarden\, Alice in Chains and Stone Temple Pilots — as a vital influence on the sonic landscape of the album\, Chaney aimed to find a melodic balance between that raw and real rock sound and the bluegrass and folk music of his native Kentucky. \n“I wanted to make something that sounded like Ralph Stanley went in and got backed up by Soundgarden\,” Chaney jokes. “I write what I listen to. And whatever I listen to is going to come out in my music.” \nIn the Shadow of the Mountain was captured by famed producer Duane Lundy at his legendary studio in Lexington\, Kentucky. While talking at-length about the possible collaboration\, Lundy spoke of his love for Soundgarden\, Alice in Chains and Stone Temple Pilots. \n“I know plenty of bluegrass guys that could have recorded this for me\,” Chaney says. “But\, I wanted to take that string band and folk sound and bring it to a rock producer\, to bring that big sound out of these acoustic instruments — [Duane] was about to do that.” \nThe album was also co-produced by guitarist Zachary Hamilton\, a close friend of Chaney\, who is also the brother and bandmate of rising Lexington singer-songwriter Abby Hamilton. \n“[Zach] has that ability to fill a room with his guitar\, his voicings\, and all the choices he goes for down the neck of the guitar\,” Chaney says. “When Abby was opening for us\, I got to sit there and watch him play every night. I knew when I was going to do another album\, he needed to be involved in some capacity.” \nHeading into the recording sessions\, Chaney brought along his band\, which included Ella Webster (fiddle)\, Kyle Kleinman (mandolin)\, Joel Murtaugh (upright bass) and James Gooding (drums). Acclaimed Kentucky musician (and former bandmate) Aaron Bibelhauser also makes an appearance. \nWith this pivot in his tone and intent compared to his 2021 debut album\, Mercy\, Chaney sees this current path as more in-tune with what he’s not only wanted to do all along\, but has slowly shifted towards in recent years amid endless touring and performing. \n“I was green [while recording Mercy]. I didn’t really know what I was doing\,” Chaney admits. “And\, by the grace of so many people around me\, we were able to get some really great string band music on [that album].” \nSince Mercy\, Chaney has added a full drum kit to his band and live show\, something that was done to enhance his sound and stage presence — this thunderous beat to accompany the sorrowful songs. \n“If I have drums\, then we’re going to do it all the way\,” Chaney says. “And that unlocked some capabilities for me as a writer to pursue a sound that I don’t think I’ve heard yet.” \nAs of late\, Chaney has returned to his hometown of Catlettsburg\, Kentucky (population: 1\,780). The tiny Appalachian community lies along the shores of the Ohio and Big Sandy rivers\, at the crossroads of the borders of West Virginia\, Ohio and The Bluegrass State. \n“I think where I’m from shows through in everything that I do\,” Chaney says. “And if you want to write songs where that is going to come through\, then I feel I need to be around my roots.” \nFor Chaney\, even though he’s only in his mid-twenties\, his journey has been long and bountiful already. From growing up in rural Appalachia to going to welding school\, only to leave it behind and take a leap of faith when an opportunity to pursue music emerged. \nThat life-changing decision led to Chaney hitting the road and finding work at The Burl\, a storied Lexington music venue. Chaney has come full circle with The Burl\, by selling out the space on multiple occasions to fervent crowds\, including the large outdoor stage. \nWith In the Shadow of the Mountain being the latest milestone for Chaney\, what remains is this driven musician in search of not only himself and his sound\, but also an audience just as hungry — for something new\, something different\, and yet something so familiar. \n“In a lot of ways\, things have gone extremely far. And yet\, so many things have remained the same\,” Chaney reflects. “And that’s been the beauty of the journey.”

DESCRIPTION:Each year\, thousands of people flock to the city of Nashville with hopes of “making it”. Ironically\, it wasn’t until Zach Russell made the decision to leave Music City\, USA that he inked his first record deal with Thirty Tigers. The drive back home may have only been three hours long\, but Russell’s journey back to old haunts in Eastern Tennessee isn’t quite that cut and dry. \nIn the 7 years preceding that trip down I-40\, there were stints as a manager at a shoe store and a karaoke host. He calloused his hands installing irrigation systems and working as a carpenter. He traveled the US and Europe as Tyler Childers’ merchandise manager and got to witness firsthand what it takes to chase down greatness. Through it all\, one thing that remained constant was his belief that he could chase it down as well. \nMusic has always played a pivotal role in Russell’s life. A background in Baptist and Hymnal music as a youth and a taste for hip-hop\, rock\, and country music informed his musical style between 2016 and 2020 as he found his footing. In 2021 the world received its proper introduction to Zach Russell as a fully formed artist with the release The Creek. This five-song EP proved not only to be a landmark release in Russell’s career\, but with its lyrical depth\, soaring instrumental jams and infectious melodies\, it served as proof that this landmark was merely the first of many to come. \nSince moving home and finding clarity\, the past 18 months have been busy for Russell. He spent those months writing music\, touring with The Alex Leach Band\, and delivering a guest appearance on Adeem the Artist critically acclaimed album\, White Trash Revelry. That wave of momentum has culminated to this moment\, and the release of his highly anticipated full-length debut\, Where the Flowers Meet the Dew. \nOnce again joining forces with up-and-coming producer Kyle Crownover (Adeem the Artist)\, this ten-song effort never takes its foot off the gas pedal. Dominant themes of wrestling with mortality\, pondering reincarnation\, and finding that ever elusive feeling of contentment in this life weave gracefully through. \nAs the old saying goes\, “Big hitters take big swings.”\, and Russell’s choice as the first single is as bold a statement as can be made. Coming in at a shade over seven minutes long\, “Born Again” begins as a rockabilly banger\, then midway through\, via a psychedelic segue it morphs into a funky\, groove heavy jam. Russell sings of reincarnation and hints that perhaps every waking moment is\, in fact\, an opportunity to start anew. \nThe first half of the record is filled with traditional waltzes (“I Thought I Was the Trees”\, “Take Me Back to Tennessee”)\, haunting electric folk (“What You Want Comes to You”)\, and 60’s R&B style (“Milk & Honey”) cuts. Its deep\, mellow\, and the lyrics are contemplative. It draws you in while not letting the listener get too comfortable. \nBeginning with the aforementioned rip-roaring lead single\, the back half of the record brings with it an altogether different vibe. Greasy\, distorted guitar licks pepper the back half of Where the Flowers Meet the Dew. “Playing House” fully displays his creative dexterity\, and would be right at home on a post-grunge rock radio station\, circa 1998\, sandwiched between Matchbox 20 and Third Eye Blind numbers. Later\, on “Nothin’ to Haul”\, he boldly calls out the posers and wannabes that fill the Nashville scene.

DESCRIPTION:RB Morris is a poet and songwriter\, solo performer and band leader\, and a sometimes playwright and actor from Knoxville\, Tennessee. He has published books of poetry including Early Fires (Iris Press)\, Keeping The Bees Employed\, and The Mockingbird Poems (Rich Mountain Bound)\, and music albums including Spies Lies and Burning Eyes\, and his most recent solo project Rich Mountain Bound. He wrote and acted in The Man Who Lives Here Is Looney\, a one-man play taken from the life and work of James Agee\, and was instrumental in founding a park dedicated to Agee in Knoxville. Morris served as the Jack E. Reese Writer-in-Residence at The University of Tennessee from 2004-2008\, and was inducted into the East Tennessee Writers Hall of Fame in 2009. He currently lives in Knoxville with his wife and daughter.

DESCRIPTION:Afriend is the stage name of Adam Ochs\, a singer\, songwriter\, painter and teacher. Adam has lived in Maryville for ten years\, originally from Miamisburg\, Ohio. The songs are about faith\, relationship\, wildlife and art. \n \nTexas-based rock singer-songwriter Mark Winters is many things; a witty poet\, passionate musician\, entrepreneur\, optimist\, family man\, and a bonafide rocket scientist. He first picked up a guitar to play a song for his wife on their anniversary. That’s when he discovered the joy of connecting with people through music. Mark combines music\, poetry\, a science background\, and love for his community to form his signature sound\, “rock with a positive vibe.” \nHis musical roots are in rock\, blues rock\, and pop\, and John Mayer\, Tom Petty\, and Jason Mraz are significant influences. “My music starts from a place of poetry and creative inspiration\, and I use my ‘rocket-scientist brain’ to find structures that help me explore that initial burst of inspiration and feeling – like writing haikus\, my favorite! My grandmother taught me to express myself through poetry and I’m thankful to her for setting me on this creative and expressive path.” \nMark has a degree in Aerospace\, Aeronautical\, and Astronautical Engineering\, and his math and science background guides his musical explorations. He likes taking complex things such as emotions and expressing them in a way that’s easy to understand. Balancing his right-brained creativity with his analytical left-brain is part of a life-long journey; music is one more place where he can explore this balance.

DESCRIPTION:Chris Wilhelm is known for bringing positive vibes and an uplifting message to his audience. He plays Americana\, folk rock originals that are infectious and insightful\, and sprinkles in covers too. Worldwide airplay brought his latest album “This Too Shall Pass” to be one of the Top 100 Alt-Country Albums of 2020\, and it spent several months on the national folk charts as well. \nChris Wilhelm is a songcatcher and live performer. He made guitars out of cardboard before getting his first one at 13. Born in Hudson\, NY\, he later moved to Albany\, NY\, then Boston\, and currently lives in Asheville\, NC. He has released nine records and played thousands of shows. He has performed in theaters\, concert venues\, festivals\, clubs\, bars\, libraries\, retirement homes\, subways\, performed on the street and even played at a marathon. He played over 200 shows a year for several years. \nIn 2000 Chris played his first open mic and has been performing live and recording ever since. He’s performed thousands of shows from the subways in Boston to venues up and down the East Coast. \nIn 2004\, Chris released his first album\, “McKinsley Steel” – it is well loved by many of his fans and includes classic songs such as “Travellin’ on Down” and the title track. \nIn 2005 he released an album called “This Train’s Not Going Slow.” It reached #3 on Boston’s 88.7FM WERS radio charts\, and he played shows in many Boston venues including Club Passim\, etc. \nIn 2008 Chris did his first solo tour\, down to New Orleans and back to Boston. He released his second studio album\, “Glory\, Filth and Fame.” \nIn 2010 did his second solo tour down South with his Dad\, fell in love with Asheville\, and ended up moving there that year on a “one month trial basis.” He lives there to this day. He released a Kickstarter-funded CD called “Just Asking.” \nFrom 2012-2015 he played 225 shows a year as the singer-songwriter for The Wilhelm Brothers. They released two studio albums with Henry Hirsch\, producer of Lenny Kravitz\, Madonna\, etc.: “Lay Your Burden Down” and “The Sea of the Unwritten.” They also released live album “Like a Bird.” \nSince 2018 Chris has been playing to bigger audiences at larger venues such as the Isis Music Hall\, The Grey Eagle\, Highland Brewing. He now plays solo\, with a rotating cast of musicians. \nDuring the 2020 pandemic\, he wrote and recorded “This Too Shall Pass” which debuted on the folk charts and is being played on radio stations around the world. \n2021 saw the online release of “Joseph’s Garage”- 12 new home demos recorded on a Tascam 4-track tape machine. Inspired by the Bruce Springsteen album\, “Nebraska\,” which was recorded on similar equipment.

The ability to make music is firmly infused in his genes\, courtesy of a family history that implanted that ability in him early on. \nWhile he modestly describes his sound as a “humble slice of Americana\,” it’s clear that it possesses so much more. With a style that encompasses country\, folk\, roots\, rock\, R&B\, and pure pop proficiency\, he defies easy categorization. With a rich reservoir of original tunes — over 300 in fact — and three well received albums (Blue Sky Rain\, Matthew C. Axton and Badmoon)\, he’s established himself as a prolific and proficient singer\, songwriter and guitarist\, both on his own and at the helm of his various ensembles. \nEven a small sampling of his musical output proves the point. His current single\, “Blue Sky Rain\,” the title track of his current album\, is both stirring and seductive\, an easy amble that belies its description of the topsy turvy travails that accompany the entanglements of relationships. \n“Born of Chains\,” culled from Badmoon\, is flush with steadfast determination\, a rugged\, relentless bluesy-rocker that conveys clear conviction and a desire to overcome whatever obstacles are tossed in his way. \n \nWake The Dead – California singer\, songwriter\, guitarist\, and producer Chuck Prophet’s new collaborative album with Cumbia group ¿Qiensave? – was released on October 25th through Yep Roc Records. \nAn extraordinary and unlikely pairing\, Prophet and ¿Qiensave? blend seamlessly together as the collection dives headfirst into the world of Cumbia music\, which consumed and comforted Prophet during a recent bout with stage four lymphoma and subsequent recovery. They also shared the album’s lead single and title track “Wake The Dead\,” an anthem that reckons with forces beyond our control while learning to let go\, a recurring theme at the core of the album. \n“I never want to be a downer\,” stated Prophet. “This record doesn’t shy away from darkness\, but it always feels hopeful. When I was growing up listening to The Clash and their flirtations with reggae\, the thing I remember most is how the music hit me\, how it made me feel. The more you listened\, the more was revealed\, but on the most fundamental level\, those records just felt good\, and that was really important to me with this album.” \nProphet’s fascination with Cumbia music began after experiencing a weekly Cumbia night at a local haunt of his in San Francisco’s Mission district. He quickly became obsessed: collecting old vinyl from Latin America\, studying its origins\, DJ’ing\, and loading his friends up with new mixes every time they came to visit. After he was diagnosed\, he had a lot of time to just sit and listen as he went through treatments. “I was going through a tunnel\,” he recalls. “It was dark. But I had music: music to play\, music to listen to\, music to get me out of my head. Music was my savior.” More than any other genre\, Cumbia served as a faithful musical companion and reprieve during his immunotherapy and chemotherapy. \nOnce he was finally feeling better\, Prophet started driving out to Salinas on a regular basis to jam with a group he’d fallen in love with called ¿Qiensave?\, a band of brothers from the Central Coast farming community. The sessions came together on a whim\, for the sheer fun of it at first\, but Prophet soon invited the band to back him up at a couple of live shows\, and the immediate reaction from audiences made it clear they were on to something special. \nProphet and ¿Qiensave? hit the studio soon afterwards\, where they blended with his longtime backing band\, The Mission Express\, to track the heart of Wake The Dead live on the floor. It was chaotic at times\, cramming as many as eight musicians into the same studio space\, but they prioritized gut feeling over sonic perfection and allowed the undeniable energy of the performances to guide them. \nThe result is a profoundly adventurous celebration of life that balances hope and fear in equal measure\, a rich and exultant meditation on what really matters from an artist who always manages to find the light\, even in the face of the most oppressing darkness. DESCRIPTION:The Tenos:\nAt nine years old\, our son\, Andy\, decided he wanted to play the banjo. This was the beginning of a new and exciting adventure for the whole family. He inspired us all to learn a new instrument and play bluegrass music together for fun and enjoyment! We played our first public performance on July 4th\, 2012\, at the Museum of Appalachia in Norris\, Tennessee! Since then\, we’ve played at Rocky Branch Community Center\, Dollywood’s BBQ & Bluegrass Festival\, Museum of Appalachia’s Fall Homecoming\, David West’s Ciderville Farm and Home Show\, TV and radio shows\, various conventions\, festivals\, service groups\, many churches\, and a variety of other venues. We recorded our first CD several years ago and we are currently in the process of recording another! Our music consists of traditional bluegrass\, old-time\, and gospel songs with close family harmonies that you will love and enjoy!

Palmer have made a name for themselves over the past several years\, honing a sound steeped in the traditions of American country music. \nThe band’s latest offering\, Krishna Country\, sees the group approaching their craft with a much more expansive worldview — folding traditional Indian sounds into their work and creating a further-mesmerizing brand of ethereal roots music. On paper\, it might seem an unexpected or jolting shift in direction\, but for B.B. Palmer it’s simply the next step forward in their collective journey. \nMake no mistake\, this is still country music at its core\, but the addition of sitar and horns awash in reverb elevates the overall product to something more\, standing on its own as a truly unique output. Imagine if Ravi Shankar recorded with the Byrds backed by Stax’s Memphis Horns\, and you’d be pretty close to imagining this Alabama outfit’s forthcoming output. \n“I found a copy of the Bhagavad Gita\,” Palmer recalls. He pored over the text and found that it resonated with him on a deeply personal level. The book inspired Palmer to dive even deeper into Indian culture. He began listening to and studying raga: a classical style of Indian music. He applied these eastern influences in his own songcraft. Krishna Country Gold showcases his discoveries from this newfound styling\, blending his honky tonk roots with a yet-untapped well of musical modes & instrumentation from India. \nFrom the moment the Bhagavad Gita landed in Palmer’s possession\, to the first drafts of these news songs\, all the way through studio time and mastering\, Krishna Country Gold seemed inevitable despite all the perceived challenges that stood in the way. It’s an undeniably singular output from these Yellowhammer State mainstays\, and a worthy entry in the canon of cosmic “American” music — SWEETHEART PR \n \nPickers Anonymous is an old timey trio consisting of multi-instrumentalists Nicholas Edward Williams (American Songcatcher/The New Quintet)\, Owen Grooms (Travis Book String Band/Pretty Little Goat/Jenn and Owen) and John Benjamin Davis (John Hartford Fiddle Project/Susto String Band). Collecting traditional material and presenting it with their own eclectic filter\, Pickers Anonymous layers high lonesome harmonies on Appalachian sounds from Old-Time\, Bluegrass\, Early Country and Hillbilly Blues. Their debut record\, Patchwork\, is slated for release in late 2025 via EarthTone Records.
