DESCRIPTION:When you think about Bluegrass music\, you don’t think about grand emotional and spiritual journeys that pierce your soul; yet that is exactly what Ettore Buzzini is creating with his innovative\, classical-infused American bluegrass music. \nTo the casual listener\, Ettore’s sound is simply hard-driving Bluegrass. But anyone who listens a little more closely will quickly notice that Ettore’s unique music intersects the iconic acoustic sounds of Americana\, youthful energy and hard drive of pop-rock\, and emotional journeys of classical romantic music. Imagine if Earl Scruggs\, Led Zeppelin\, and Chopin got together on stage: it might sound something like Ettore’s music. \nMulti-award winning young Swiss-American songwriting and banjo prodigy Ettore has a decidedly GenAlpha take on traditional Bluegrass\, rooted in tradition\, but with a innovative\, colorful playing style that is irresistibly distinct\, and a songwriting style completely outside the mainstream. His unique\, fresh style that appeals to non-bluegrass youth is a product of his roots on both sides. He was imbued with the classical tradition while living with his family in Italian-speaking Switzerland\, as a toddler. At age 6\, his Tennessee grandfather introduced him to Flatt & Scruggs\, and he was hit by bluegrass like a lightning bolt. He begged his parents for a banjo for nearly 3 years until\, at age 9\, they relented. Ettore’s love for banjo expanded across the generational iterations of bluegrass. He devoured the traditional bluegrass classics\, while also becoming enthralled by the power of classical music\, inspired by his Swiss grandparents’ sacred choir. Ettore made a name for himself at youth competitions in the Blue Ridge Mountains with his prodigious banjo picking style as well as his mastery of flatpicking guitar. He then revealed a completely new level of artistry at just 11 years old\, when he won the Kruger Brothers’ Young Songwriter’s Contest\, with an original banjo and lyrical composition about the Norse mythology of Ragnarok. By age 14\, he had released his first album\, after being approached by legendary bluegrass record label Patuxent Records. DESCRIPTION:Redd & The Paper Flowers is an Appalachian Folk / Livingroom Folk band from Knoxville\, Tennessee with members Katie Adams (upright bass)\, Colleen d’Alelio (cello)\, Gavin Gregg (mandolin)\, and Redd Daugherty (guitar). \nThe band met in 2022 through a local open mic and mutual friends\, and they just released their debut album\, Appalachian Bell Jar\, a record that is a testament to East Tennessee and greater Appalachia’s beauty\, struggles with government support\, and their experiences in the area. \nThe band has grown extremely close over the past three years\, particularly in touring: In 2025 alone\, they’re on the road for 22 weeks out of the year. The band also grew through the tragedy of Redd Daugherty losing her dear friend\, Jason Cooper\, who owned a local Knoxville music store named Rush’s Music\, which has been a staple of the Knoxville music community since 1958. From Coop’s tragic death\, Redd found out he willed her the business\, his estate\, and his dog\, Ando\, who passed in April 2024. SUMMARY:The WDVX Big Plate - 6/13 - Jay Clark & The Tennessee Tree Beavers
DESCRIPTION:Although Jay Clark went to college for 11.5 years and has a PhD in wildlife ecology\, he somehow ended up striking a balance between careers in music & science. Jay grew up in Winchester\, Tennessee\, near where the western escarpment of the Cumberland Plateau crosses from Tennessee into Alabama. His dad was a Cumberland Presbyterian minister for 42 years. His mom an English teacher. Church played a huge roll in Jay’s upbringing. It was in the church where Jay learned to sing & in the mountains where he felt closest to God. Jay wrote his first song in 1990. He didn’t know how to play guitar\, so he taught himself to play in order to put music to his first song. That song was the first of many. \nJay has been a staple in the East Tennessee music scene for more than 20 years. During his college years\, Jay not only trapped & conducted research on black bears in the Smokies\, but also played in a couple of different bluegrass bands\, most notably a brother-style duo with Keith Garrett (currently of The Boxcars) and later in a bluegrass band\, The Stringbeans\, with Robinella and Cruz Contreras (currently of The Black Lillies). Since releasing his first record in 2004 (Pen to Paper)\, Jay has supplemented his career as a scientist with performing his songs across the Southeast & southern Appalachia. Presently\, Jay plays a number of his shows with his band\, Jay Clark & the Tennessee Tree Beavers\, which features Greg Horne on lead guitar & Daniel Kimbro on upright bass. Jay recently released his fifth recording\, Of Mountains & Heartbreak (2016). He still uses the other side of his brain as an adjunct professor in the Biology Department at Maryville College. Jay resides in the foothills of the Smokies on 31.5 acres in Rockford\, TN\, with his wife\, Stacy\, and their pack of rescue hounds.

The festival experience is full of surprises. \nA festival pass offers access to all publicly announced performances—enabling festival goers to not only see familiar artists that they know and love\, but also to explore the music of artists with whom they are not already familiar. \nBig Ears presents extraordinary performances and arts experiences to connect more than 40\,000 locals and visitors of all ages throughout the Knoxville community each year. \nFounded in 2009\, the Big Ears Festival is the flagship event of our organization. With a program budget of $3.5 million and a local annual economic impact of $68.9 million\, the Big Ears Festival is one of the highest-profile arts events in the Southeastern U.S.\, garnering regular national media coverage\, hosting numerous world premiere performances\, and helping to define the cultural character of the region for many across the country. \nPerforming will be: \nLonnie Holley was born on February 10\, 1950 in Birmingham\, Alabama. From the age of five\, Holley worked various jobs: picking up trash at a drive-in movie theatre\, washing dishes\, and cooking. He lived in a whiskey house\, on the state fairgrounds\, and in several foster homes. His early life was chaotic and Holley was never afforded the pleasure of a real childhood. \nSince 1979\, Holley has devoted his life to the practice of improvisational creativity. His art and music\, born out of struggle\, hardship\, but perhaps more importantly\, out of furious curiosity and biological necessity\, has manifested itself in drawing\, painting\, sculpture\, photography\, performance\, and sound. Holley’s sculptures are constructed from found materials in the oldest tradition of African American sculpture. Objects\, already imbued with cultural and artistic metaphor\, are combined into narrative sculptures that commemorate places\, people\, and events. His work is now in collections of major museums throughout the country\, on permanent display in the United Nations\, and been displayed in the White House Rose Garden. In January of 2014\, Holley completed a one-month artist-in-residence with the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation in Captiva Island\, Florida\, site of the acclaimed artist’s studio. \n \nLee Bains will also join us this day!

DESCRIPTION:Tim Decker is originally from Jonesborough\, TN now resides in Erwin Tn\, with his wife Crystal. He started playing Piano at the age of 9. Progressing to Banjo and Guitar in his teen years he won 2nd place in the Kentucky State Banjo Championships in Middlesboro\, Ky junior division. He attended East Tennessee State University (E.T.S.U.) as a music major and performed with the E.T.S.U Bluegrass Program under Jack Tottle. He played country music on the road on semiprofessional circuits and showcased twice in Nashville\, Tn for major record labels with 2 different country acts in the early 1990’s. In 2012 Tim was half of the duo of “Decker and Skinner and the Blue Ridge Cut Ups” which appeared on the Song of the Mountains television show with Tim White. During that time\, he raised a family and worked until taking early retirement and reentered the genre of Bluegrass Music. Tim’s influences are Bill Monroe\, John Duffey\, Charlie Waller\, Red Smiley\, Tony Rice\, Earl Scruggs\, J.D Crowe and Don Reno. \n \n

DESCRIPTION:Four Leaf Peat is Tennessee’s premier Traditional Irish Band and has been performing locally and regionally since 2004! Traditional Irish music ranges from vibrant dance tunes to soulful songs\, and Four Leaf Peat’s performances are always marked by a keen sense of the tradition\, mixed with just the right amount of influence from the rich musical history of East Tennessee. Four Leaf Peat’s unique sound is a result of its members’ various musical backgrounds\, and their continued passion for traditional Irish music. By taking all of their years of musical training\, and building on Irish influences like The Bothy Band\, Planxty\, Flying Cloud & Silly Wizard\, to more modern twists on Traditional music such as Dervish\, Open the Door for Three & Lunasa; Four Leaf Peat has built its own brand of Irish music which celebrates the musical bridge that spans the Atlantic. \n \nDaniel Kimbro:\nI live in East Tennessee. I have two kids\, a whining\, braying hound dog\, and I have a wife who tolerates my making the pursuit of music my career and lifestyle. \nI play the bass\, mainly. I started out on the guitar\, but the first cover band I auditioned for said\, “we could use a bass player.” \nI grew up in places called Morristown and White Pine in East Tennessee. \nMy parents fed me on a steady diet of bass and crappie fishing\, The Stanley Brothers\, Van Halen\, Flatt & Scruggs\, W.A. Mozart\, The Police\, New Grass Revival\, Guy Clark\, and Townes Van Zandt\, among many others. Mom taught me the recorder and I played the trombone in the 5th grade. We had a family bluegrass band called “Mountain Soul” in which I played mostly guitar\, and then some bass. Dad drove us all over East Tennessee with our plywood bass strapped to the roof of our car. One time we drove into a parking garage and forgot it was up there. I stopped playing trombone in college and immediately got laid. Speaking of getting laid\, back to bluegrass… \nOur family band played only the finest backwoods general stores\, swap meets\, cake walks\, Civil War reenactments\, volunteer fire-halls\, tanning bed salons\, Cocke County family reunions (we crashed one just to meet a really good clawhammer banjoist)\, and one massively awkward Seventh Day Adventist church service…I wouldn’t trade the times on stage with my parents and brothers for anything in the world. I would trade some of the food though. \nI began my “formal” music education in 2001 at the University of Tennessee\, which is where I began studying the double bass. I went to school for way too many years and managed to graduate with a degree and a half in Strings Performance and Studio Music and Jazz\, though I’ll say I’ve learned more in the last 10 years than I did in the previous 25. I’m grateful to my college bass professor\, Rusty Holloway\, for the invaluable lessons he taught me about how to learn and perform music\, and how to be a team player. \nDuring college and after\, I’ve been fortunate to travel and play with many different groups all across the U.S. and Canada\, Northern Europe/Scandinavia\, and Japan. During a tour with the Lovell Sisters Band I had the privilege of playing in front of perennial Grammy award-winning resophonic guitarist Jerry Douglas\, and he asked me to join his band in 2013. I’m grateful to Jerry\, and thanks in no small part to him I’ve been fortunate enough to share the stage (or at least sit around and pick) with many of the folks I grew up listening to. \nIn March of 2017 I was asked to handle bass duties on the Transatlantic Sessions 2017 US Tour\, where I had the honor of subbing for bass great and personal hero Danny Thompson. During that tour I found myself accompanying Sir Aly Bain\, James Taylor\, Jerry Douglas\, Alison Krauss\, Rodney Crowell\, Mary Chapin Carpenter\, Roseanne Cash\, John Paul White\, Sarah Jarosz\, Aoife O’Donovan\, The Milk Carton Kids\, Declan O’Rourke\, Karen Matheson\, Maura O’Connell\, Joe Newberry\, Russ Barenburg\, John Doyle\, James Mackintosh\, John McCukser\, Michael McGoldrick\, and Donald Shaw. That was a whirlwind full of amazing music and lovely people. It is really fun to ask for more James Taylor in your monitor. \nIn 2014 or so I was introduced to Martin Harley by our mutual friend Sam Lewis. Martin and I hit it off and made a couple records\, and now I go to England and Canada a fair bit. There’s lots of rule following\, traffic cameras\, and boot/hat fashion advice flowing both ways (oft ignored).Sam\, Martin and I are currently working on a trio record. That’s right ladies. Trio. \nIn 2018 we in the Jerry Douglas Band were nominated for a Grammy award in the the “Best Contemporary Instrumental Record.” We lost. \nIn late 2018 I was asked to join the Flatt & Scruggs tribute band The Earls of Leicester. I said yes. \nIn early 2019 I was asked to once again step into Danny Thompson’s huge brogues and perform with the Transatlantic Sessions for the UK tour throughout Scotland\, England and Ireland\, alongside featured artists Tim O’brien\, Molly Tuttle\, Gretchen Peters\, Cara Dillon and Paul McKenna. Then we did it again in 2020\, right before Covid\, alongside Tommy Emmanuel\, Cahalen Morrison\, Sierra Hull\, Rachel Sermanni\, and Cathy Jordan. I asked Cathy Jordan to marry me. DESCRIPTION:Jeanine Fuller is a vocalist\, songwriter and performer from Brooklyn\, New York\, but is now based in Knoxville\, Tennessee. \nJeanine uses her vast musical influences in Soul\, R & B\, Funk\, Blues\, Jazz\, Gospel & Rock to fuse her eclectic vocal sound. \nShe has been singing as long as she can remember\, since about the age of four or five for family\, family friends and neighbors. However\, Jeanine really began singing since the age of eight in the C.O.G.I.C.\, Pentecostal\, as well later on in Baptist\, Methodist and Non-Denominational churches\, leading songs in the choir and singing solos. \nBeing reared for a while in Fayetteville\, NC\, it was in NC\, where her talents were groomed. She was taught to play the violin and later a little bit of piano. However\, it was her classical voice training from private teachers as a teenager\, that eventually led to her winning a national music competition and a four year scholarship to attend the duration of her high school career and college at the arts conservatory\, the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. She earned a special concentration in Classical voice performance in addition to her high school diploma. \nShe was also a college student at the music conservatory\, Manhattan School of Music in NYC\, but it wasn’t before long she was in demand as a touring artist. \nJeanine draws inspiration from greats like\, Etta James\, Billie Holiday\, Sarah Vaughan\, Dianne Reeves\, Chaka Khan\, Michael Jackson\, Stevie Wonder and most definitely Prince. \nShe has had the pleasure of performing for countless festivals\, such as featured artist for the Women in Jazz Jam Festival\, Knox Pridefest and the honor of sharing stages with notable\, Grammy award artists\, such as her jazz idol\, Dianne Reeves\, Brian Blade and Son Little. \nJeanine draws her soulful\,engaging performances from vast experiences in theater\,jazz\, gospel and classical ensembles\, touring the US and abroad in professional touring companies\, as well as cover bands & her own cabaret style shows. \nIn 2019\, Jeanine founded a working Soul/Funk Tribute band\, Jeanine Fuller & the True Funk SOULdiers. She is bandleader\, front person and often features local music talents in this dynamic\, fun and engaging tribute band. \nJeanine is a mother\, a daughter\, sister\, spouse\, auntie\, your homegirl\, just sharing the love of music. “I didn’t find music\, music found me”. There are workshops for musicians who want to know more about Traditional Irish Music\, first hand. And the Ceili Dance and Showcase concert for everyone to enjoy. \nThe event starts Friday night with a Ceili Dance\, Irish session\, open house\, and potluck dinner. People can register for the weekend\, buy tickets for the Saturday night concert and hear some great music. Feel free to bring a dish to share!\nSaturday is the big day and consists of workshop sessions teaching Irish Whistle\, Fiddle\, Guitar\, Bodhran\, Story telling and more! There is also a slow session to help teach tunes and introduce players to the Irish session community.\nThe big finale is Saturday night when musicians from all over the Southeast and East Coast come together for a fantastic show of Irish tunes and songs! But wait there’s more!!!! Once the concert ends all of the weekends participants gather for one last session and play til……well\, until they are done.\nBut wait…..there’s even more!!!! Sunday\, workshop participants are invited to a brunch and farewell session at Boyd’s Jig and Reel Pub. Only $15 for buffet brunch and coffee\, drink specials are extra. Pretty Sweet!! This weekend is about friends\, the ones we know and those we are about to meet. \n

Recognizing the duo’s advocacy\, the pair were honored with The Troy Gentry Compassion Award in 2021 for compassion\, commitment\, kindness and love. \nTheir whimsical yet unmistakable blend of Country and Pop has garnered praise from industry icons and tastemakers. DESCRIPTION:Over the past two and a half decades\, Dave Eggar‘s earned rock star status in pop music world as first-call cellist and string arranger for superstars like Coldplay\, Evanescence\, John Legend\, Lewis Capaldi and Bebe Rexha and Foreigner. Yet for the multi-talented veteran musician\, the piano has always been the ultimate place of solace since his childhood days as a classical prodigy. \nIn his youth\, those keys were a sacred space where he found a home immersed in the lyrical glories of Chopin ballades and solo pieces by Satie\, Gabriel Faure and Toru Takemitsu. Throughout his career\, even as the four-time Grammy nominee has amassed hundreds of string credits\, the piano compositions on his solo albums – from his 1998 debut Serenity to his prodigious latest release Dragonfly – reveal a truer artistry that comes alive in a space where he connects with people more deeply and emotionally. \nCo-written and produced\, like Eggar’s 2021 album Awakening\, by drummer\, percussionist and songwriter Chuck Palmer\, Dragonfly is a thematically expansive yet musically intimate collection which\, true to the title’s mythological implications\, finds Eggar exploring the concepts of metamorphosis\, self-realization and the insight of clear vision. It’s all with an eye towards helping us meet the great challenges of a post pandemic world\, rise above the darkness and discover exciting new possibilities. \nWhile most of the pianist’s previous solo albums bear titles reflecting the healing music space (including 2002’s Angelic Embrace)\, the symbolism of the Dragonfly – brilliantly embodied by the colorful\, intricate cover illustration and artwork – made perfect sense as a reflection of a hopeful embrace of a new era. In essence\, it’s a tribute as well to Gomeo\, a Native American philosopher and fan of Eggar’s music who always called the artist “Dragonflyboy” in reference to the combination of courage and fragility he observed in Eggar. Eggar in turn dedicates the graceful\, reflective title track to Gomeo. \n“The pandemic and resulting lockdown freed us from our usual distractions and made us all stop and think about the meaning of our lives\,” says Eggar\, who is releasing Dragonfly in the wake of the two 2023 Grammy nominations earned for his work with clarinetist Tasha Warren on the album Ourself Behind Ourself\, Concealed\, featuring compositions by Paquito D’Rivera and Pascal Le Boeuf. “I look at these realizations and the re-entry into new phases of life as a metamorphosis\, much like the one a dragonfly undergoes from larva to adult. As we re-enter society\, it begs the question: How can we do better and find the beauty within ourselves? \n“On Awakening\,” he adds\, “the songs were vehicles for me to think through and solve issues related to that difficult time. With Dragonfly\, they’re about being more courageous and enlivening. Now that we’re moving into the next chapter of our existence\, how do we strike out in the world? On a personal level\, the darkness where the album begins and ends reflects my working through pain\, looking metaphorically over these past few years as I’ve experienced the transformation from a darkness into a place of light.” \nMuch of the darkness Eggar refers to is rooted in his sorrow over the loss of many special people in his life over the past year. In the album’s credits\, he dedicates Dragonfly to the aforementioned Gomeo as well as Andrew\, Mark and Ronnie. Losing so many in such a short span inspired him to think about his many vectors as a musician. Following the stark\, elegant “Prelude\,” he taps into “The Darkness\,” a graceful hypnotic piece with classical overtones (and the added heartrending texture of his cello harmony) for Andrew\, a close friend who took his own life. \nThe equally soulful\, haunting tune “Sorrow Returns” is for “Ronnie” – a nickname for Rosalyn Freundlich\, a therapist who transformed his lie at an early age\, helping him from his teens through his early 30s. This included the later period of a troubled childhood\, which ran from the highs of being a child prodigy playing the Metropolitan Opera and Carnegie Hall to running away from home. “Ronnie was more than a therapist for me\,” he says. “She was also a very powerful philosopher. Her passing had a significant impact on the recording of Dragonfly.” \nComplementing the gorgeous\, introspective piano pieces – which include “Embark\,” “Encircled\,” “Soliloquy” and “Shards of Light” – are the stately\, dramatic and hopeful “Lullaby of Kingston” (a piano rendition of the title track from his 2010 album Kingston Morning) and two tracks Eggar performs with Bristol Lightning\, the Americana quartet he formed during the quarantine period with talented bluegrass musicians he met and vibed with upon his pandemic-era move from NYC to Bristol\, TN. The group’s Blake Collins (mandolin) and Phil Faconti (guitar) appear with Eggar on the uniquely experimental\, atmosphere-rich\, mood swinging “Memories of New York” and are joined by singer Ashton Davison (providing ethereal wordless vocals) on the trippy and tension filled\, densely percussive classical/bluegrass fusion jam “Road Trip.” \nAt first\, Eggar thought these two Bristol Lightning tracks were too much of a departure from the piano-centric flow of the rest of Dragonfly – but ultimately he loved how everything worked together to capture where he’s coming from in a meditative space while expanding his repertoire\, taking risks and tackling new adventures in his life. “You can go on a road trip to explore new possibilities and also remember New York as it was and find new life there\,” he says. “These songs relate all the possibilities that await us after a long time of struggle. Through all the meditation\, we can find a time for action.” \nThough it is the closing track\, the piano piece “Onwards” flows like an unfinished folk song\, promising more magic to come. Ending with such simplicity harkens back to “Appalachian Spring\,” an enduring work by famed composer Aaron Copland\, who in his later years lived in Eggar’s hometown of Croton-on-Hudson NY and was Eggar’s piano teacher when he was six. It is also a way of acknowledging the pianist’s mellower but still quite vibrant life now in Appalachia\, considered by some to be the birthplace of country music. \nWhile Eggar’s fascinating history as a prodigy usually takes precedence in his official biographies\, it’s the way music helped the Julliard trained musician cop with the struggles of that childhood that tell the deeper story of his evolving genius. In addition to being in great demand with jazz and pop music royalty (Michael Brecker\, David Foster\, Taylor Swift\, Tony Bennett\, Andrea Bocelli and Esperanza Spalding\, among scores of others)\, he has collaborated with the New York City Ballet\, the Jose Limon Company\, Attack Theatre\, Pendulum Aerial Arts\, Shen Wei Dance\, San Francisco Ballet and Complexions Contemporary Ballet. \nEggar has also appeared as a featured soloist with the Thailand Philharmonic\, The Sydney Symphony\, the Melbourne Symphony\, the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic. Over the past few years\, he has collaborated on live events with yoga artist Christiane Sabo\, which allowed him to explore the idea of how emotion and meditation work in tandem. \n“I like the way the music on Dragonfly isn’t just about processing sorrow and loss in a meditative space\, but also opens up a journey from there into once again embracing the world with courage and confidence\,” says Eggar. “I am grateful for the many years I have been with Domo Records\, whose leadership always believed in my unique voice as an artist\, even when I wasn’t sure of myself.
