SUMMARY:The WDVX Big Plate – 3/20 – Wreckless Strangers
DESCRIPTION:Wreckless Strangers is a collective of friends and musicians carrying the torch for San Francisco’s grand rock ‘n’ roll tradition. Their unique blend of “Ameri-Cali Soul” melds the contemporary blues stylings of Bonnie Raitt and Boz Scaggs; the songwriting sensibilities of Sons of Champlin and Fleetwood Mac; the swashbuckling Americana of the Lost Planet Airmen and Peter Rowan; and the funk of Sly Stone and Tower of Power with a dash of Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane for flavor and unpredictability. With soaring vocal harmonies and burning instrumental improvisation framed in concise and poignant original songwriting\, Wreckless Strangers seek to honor and carry forth the brand of free-spirited musical fun and adventure that defines the Bay Area. \nThe band features Amber Morris on lead vocals; David Noble on lead guitar\, lead vocals; Joshua Zucker on bass\, vocals; Mick Hellman on drums\, vocals; Rob Anderson on guitar\, vocals; and Fletcher Nielsen on keys. Their new EP\, *Dirty Souls*\, is their third project with 4x GRAMMY award-winning engineer/producer Dave Way.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Big Plate – 2/20 – The Garrett Boys
DESCRIPTION:Every family has its own unique history\, a timeline fleshed out by memorable characters\, milestone events\, and the stories passed on through the decades that bind it all together. For the Garrett Boys\, a family trio from Overton County in east Tennessee\, their history just happens to lend itself to some excellent Appalachian folk music. \nMade up of brothers Stephen and Russell Garrett\, and Stephen’s son Carter\, the Garrett Boys are rooted\, both musically and physically\, in 500 hilly\, wooded acres that have had a magnetic pull over their family for generations. The men refer to it simply as “The Land\,” and it’s the setting for nearly every one of the 11 songs on It Runs Deep\, the trio’s debut album. \n“About 200 years ago\, some Garrett boys came from North Carolina and settled in that area\,” says Stephen\, who plays acoustic guitar and sings lead in the band. “Some old records say that they acquired land between Mill Creek and Mitchell Creek\, and that’s the property that Russell and I grew up on. Carter will be the ninth generation to live on it.” \nBut while the land is specific to the Garrett Boys\, the album the group wrote about it is universal. Produced by Ray Kennedy (Steve Earle\, Lucinda Williams)\, It Runs Deep contains elements of bluegrass\, folk\, and country\, but refuses to play it safe. It nods to their varied influences\, from Steve Earle and Rodney Crowell to Chris Knight and Hank Williams Jr. \nWith It Runs Deep\, the Garrett Boys memorialize those family stories — for themselves\, for their descendants\, and now for fans of classic American folk music. \n“Our music is about the importance and depth of family and community\,” Stephen says. “It’s a mix of what we have been versus what we can become\, and how we can take the good from all that and build a future.”

SUMMARY:The WDVX Big Plate – 1/16 – Amelia Day
DESCRIPTION:Amelia Day is a musical jack-of-all-trades. Standing at the intersection of folk\, rock\, and pop\, Day blends heartfelt storytelling\, raw delivery\, and unforgettable melodies into music that feels both fresh and familiar — like rediscovering an old favorite. A self-described writer before anything else\, her perceptive lyricism extends far beyond her 23 years\, with lines reminiscent of songwriting greats like Joni Mitchell and Paul Simon. As the Spokesman-Review notes\, Day has a signature style that features “wordplay\, double-meanings and rhythmic variations\,” with themes ranging from journeying into adulthood to climate change. Many of Day’s songs are also shaped by her intimate relationships\, where her queerness and candor take center stage. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDay is proficient on guitar\, keys\, bass\, and drums\, often switching between instruments during her live performances. At other times\, she lets the music take over — stepping away from the instruments to simply sing and dance with mic in hand. She says she aims to “create an environment of complete presence and joy\, but also healthy catharsis of all the worst emotions.” As the Vanderbilt Hustler highlights\, her set is “energetic\, emotional and full of fun\, just like all of her music.” Fans often leave Day’s shows on a high\, blown away by her powerhouse vocals (drawing comparisons to Brandi Carlile\, Norah Jones\, Alanis Morissette\, and others)\, and charmed by the joy she exudes while onstage. \nAlready boasting over a million streams on a number of songs\, Amelia Day continues to prove herself as both a songwriter and performer\, emerging as a voice destined to resonate for years to come.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Big Plate – 1/9 – Anders Thomsen
DESCRIPTION:Purveyor of quality honky-tonk\, blues\, country and roots rock. \n\nAnders Thomsen has deep roots. This midwestern boy grew up on the music that makes America. The Twang of the Opry on a Saturday night\, the Rock n Roll on the stereos in the Chevys and the Fords and the Blues and Soul spilling out of the nightclubs he snuck into. He heard all that and made it his own. \nHe picked up the heartbreak and the joy of the blues\, and matched it with the lonesome\, lovelorn hillbilly waltz and powered it all with those rock and roll V-8s. \nHe got an early start\, playing in bars and nightclubs before he was old enough to drive\, sometimes even with a note from his mother.  He sang\, played guitar\, played bass and even played the washtub. Anything to get him on stage to learn the craft.

SUMMARY:The WDVX Big Plate – 11/21 – Mic Harrison & The High Score
DESCRIPTION:On April 7\, 1862\, the morning after the first day of the battle of Shiloh in West Tennessee\, it frosted. The peach trees that were on the fields where the battle took place had recently blossomed and fell with the frost\, covering the dead bodies of the young soldiers like pink snow. As a child growing up in the 1970s\, Mic Harrison had no idea of the significance that Shiloh held in history. He only knew that it was his family’s favorite place for picnics and reunions. \nThose memories make up “Picnic at Shiloh\,” the final track on Harrison’s new album\, “Peach Blossom Youth.” Now a noted singer-songwriter and amateur historian\, Harrison feels the full irony of the sweet memories contrasted with the area’s bloody past. \nHarrison has been writing songs since he was a high school student in Bradford\, Tenn. \n“Even early on I hardly ever wrote songs about girls and all that\,” says Harrison. “I wrote about life\, history… that stuff.” \nHarrison moved to Knoxville in the 1990s to join proto-Americana act The V-Roys\, and later joined power pop favorites Superdrag before recording his solo album “Pallbearer’s Shoes.” When he teamed up with The High Score early in the new millennium he found the perfect collaborators. The band now consists of guitarists Robbie Trosper and Kevin Abernathy\, bassist Vance Hillard and drummer Mark T. Dunn. Harrison’s 20-year collaboration with The High Score has resulted in a stack of albums as well featured spots in music festivals\, including Bonnaroo\, Rhythm N’ Blooms\, and Easyriders Rodeo\, and national tours in elegant concert halls\, sweaty bars\, and listening rooms across America. \nTo make sure the recording of these new songs were as good as possible\, Harrison brought in famed producer Eric “Roscoe” Ambel\, whose credits include producing albums for The Bottle Rockets\, Nils Lofgren\, The Backsliders\, and many others\, co-leading the Del-Lords and The Yayhoos\, as well as playing guitar with Joan Jett and the Blackhearts and Steve Earle. \n“Sonically\, this is the best record we’ve ever done\,” says Harrison. \nNearly all of the songs are about real people – from a West Tennessee character named Bobby Jack\, who inspired “Scrap Iron Man” to a Mexican American War soldier in the song “Dallas Sutton.” \n“A lot of these songs are very personal\,” says Harrison. “It could be a book.” \n“Lose You Over This” was written after a family member’s suicide attempt. “Keep Drivin’” was inspired by a beloved niece being kicked out of church because she is gay. “Old Man” is about Harrison’s late father\, who died of Alzheimer’s disease. \nWith their upbeat melodies and energetic delivery\, it would be easy to miss the sometimes-dark subject matter of Harrison’s new songs. Yet\, that’s what makes this and all of Harrison’s work special. It draws you in and delivers a good time\, but if you care to dig a little deeper\, there’s plenty more to discover. \n– Wayne Bledsoe

SUMMARY:The WDVX Big Plate – 10/3 – Cole Chaney
DESCRIPTION:When it comes to his latest album\, In the Shadow of the Mountain\, 25-year-old singer-songwriter Cole Chaney is pretty candid and blunt about who he is and what kind of music he wants to make — the result of which\, this stunning offering from an artist wise beyond his age. \n“There’s a yin to every yang\,” Chaney says. “I want nothing more than for people to be creatively fulfilled\, and to do what they want. But\, for me to preach that? I have to practice it.” \nThat attitude resides at the core of the record\, where the trajectory of the songs seemingly — more so purposely — shoot off in the opposite direction of many of his contemporaries in the Americana\, country and folk music scenes. In truth? Chaney is summoning his rock roots. \n“I’m not concerned with being labeled as ‘country’.“There’s not a lot of music being released right now that is doing anything for me. I made something that I would want to listen to.” \nPointing to his lifelong admiration for 1990s rock — specifically Soundgarden\, Alice in Chains and Stone Temple Pilots — as a vital influence on the sonic landscape of the album\, Chaney aimed to find a melodic balance between that raw and real rock sound and the bluegrass and folk music of his native Kentucky. \n“I wanted to make something that sounded like Ralph Stanley went in and got backed up by Soundgarden\,” Chaney jokes. “I write what I listen to. And whatever I listen to is going to come out in my music.” \nIn the Shadow of the Mountain was captured by famed producer Duane Lundy at his legendary studio in Lexington\, Kentucky. While talking at-length about the possible collaboration\, Lundy spoke of his love for Soundgarden\, Alice in Chains and Stone Temple Pilots. \n“I know plenty of bluegrass guys that could have recorded this for me\,” Chaney says. “But\, I wanted to take that string band and folk sound and bring it to a rock producer\, to bring that big sound out of these acoustic instruments — [Duane] was about to do that.” \nThe album was also co-produced by guitarist Zachary Hamilton\, a close friend of Chaney\, who is also the brother and bandmate of rising Lexington singer-songwriter Abby Hamilton. \n“[Zach] has that ability to fill a room with his guitar\, his voicings\, and all the choices he goes for down the neck of the guitar\,” Chaney says. “When Abby was opening for us\, I got to sit there and watch him play every night. I knew when I was going to do another album\, he needed to be involved in some capacity.” \nHeading into the recording sessions\, Chaney brought along his band\, which included Ella Webster (fiddle)\, Kyle Kleinman (mandolin)\, Joel Murtaugh (upright bass) and James Gooding (drums). Acclaimed Kentucky musician (and former bandmate) Aaron Bibelhauser also makes an appearance. \nWith this pivot in his tone and intent compared to his 2021 debut album\, Mercy\, Chaney sees this current path as more in-tune with what he’s not only wanted to do all along\, but has slowly shifted towards in recent years amid endless touring and performing. \n“I was green [while recording Mercy]. I didn’t really know what I was doing\,” Chaney admits. “And\, by the grace of so many people around me\, we were able to get some really great string band music on [that album].” \nSince Mercy\, Chaney has added a full drum kit to his band and live show\, something that was done to enhance his sound and stage presence — this thunderous beat to accompany the sorrowful songs. \n“If I have drums\, then we’re going to do it all the way\,” Chaney says. “And that unlocked some capabilities for me as a writer to pursue a sound that I don’t think I’ve heard yet.” \nAs of late\, Chaney has returned to his hometown of Catlettsburg\, Kentucky (population: 1\,780). The tiny Appalachian community lies along the shores of the Ohio and Big Sandy rivers\, at the crossroads of the borders of West Virginia\, Ohio and The Bluegrass State. \n“I think where I’m from shows through in everything that I do\,” Chaney says. “And if you want to write songs where that is going to come through\, then I feel I need to be around my roots.” \nFor Chaney\, even though he’s only in his mid-twenties\, his journey has been long and bountiful already. From growing up in rural Appalachia to going to welding school\, only to leave it behind and take a leap of faith when an opportunity to pursue music emerged. \nThat life-changing decision led to Chaney hitting the road and finding work at The Burl\, a storied Lexington music venue. Chaney has come full circle with The Burl\, by selling out the space on multiple occasions to fervent crowds\, including the large outdoor stage. \nWith In the Shadow of the Mountain being the latest milestone for Chaney\, what remains is this driven musician in search of not only himself and his sound\, but also an audience just as hungry — for something new\, something different\, and yet something so familiar. \n“In a lot of ways\, things have gone extremely far. And yet\, so many things have remained the same\,” Chaney reflects. “And that’s been the beauty of the journey.”

SUMMARY:The WDVX Big Plate – 8/22 – Carolina Bluegrass Style
DESCRIPTION:Carolina Bluegrass Style is a unique blend of young and old\, past\, present\, and perhaps the future of bluegrass music. When Tommy Thomas asked Tyler Chasteen\, Don Ashley\, and David Prosser to get together and play some music\, they had no idea they would be creating a new group. Yet\, the popularity of the group has surpassed all expectations. While all the members of the band live in the Columbia\, SC area\, they have been honing their sound in restaurants\, clubs\, and other venues around Asheville\, NC. \nThe band’s eclectic mix of members has brought about a fusion of both musical styles and musical selections\, featuring a little of everything from old Western Swing music to Jazz\, Reggae\, and\, of course\, Traditional and Contemporary Bluegrass. The band has become known not only for their sound and mix of music but also for their warm and endearing stage presence that keeps people entertained and involved in what they do. \n### Let’s Meet the Band \n**Tommy Thomas** – The “foundation” man for the band\, Tommy has played Jazz\, Big Band\, and Classical before getting into bluegrass and playing with several local bands. He brought Carolina Bluegrass Style together\, and his rock-solid beat moves the sound with his walking lines. Inspired by legends like Tom Grey and Edgar Meyer\, Tommy is a key component of the band’s rhythm section. \n**Don Ashley** – Don plays the fiddle and serves as the Master of Ceremonies for the band. His charm\, wit\, and easygoing manner engage the crowd\, making them feel part of the performance. With a career spanning several bands\, Don’s powerful double-stop fiddle style and strong baritone lead voice make him a fun and captivating performer. \n**Tyler Chasteen** – Holding down both rhythm and lead guitar\, Tyler is the youngest member of the group. His talent is immense\, inspired by icons like Tony Rice\, Clarence White\, and Billy Strings. Tyler is not only an exceptional guitarist but also a strong singer\, with his lead and tenor voice fitting perfectly over the music that Carolina Bluegrass Style creates. \n**David Prosser** – Rounding out the ensemble is the banjo and dobro player. David has been playing since he was 17 and loves the music he plays. Whether it’s swing or hard-driving bluegrass\, David is always having a great time. With influences ranging from Earl Scruggs and Don Reno to Béla Fleck and Tony Trischka\, David is constantly learning and evolving his craft. \nThat’s the band\, or as we like to say…This is CBS!

SUMMARY:The WDVX Blue Plate Special - 8/8 - Robinella
DESCRIPTION:Robinella’s career began with a sort of luck that rarely comes to most artists within their lifetime. What started out as a simple husband-and-wife duo fresh out of college quickly grew to a full-fledged band that blended Bluegrass\, Country and Jazz. The combination of Robinella’s honey-sweet vocals with violin\, mandolin\, bass\, drums and piano captivated audiences\, thus creating the ever popular Robinella & the CC Stringband. \nThey released their first album\, self-titled Robinella and The CC Stringband\, in 2000\, which quickly followed\, No Saint\, No Prize in 2001. Both were on the independent label Big Gulley Records. With a few simple twists of fate\, what followed was a whirlwind of rapid success – Columbia Records liked what they heard and signed Robinella in 2002. The label took seven songs from the band’s two prior albums and released them as the CD Blanket for My Soul and then released a full album in 2003\, Robinella and the CC Stringband. This led to a national tour including opening for such artists as Bob Dylan\, Willie Nelson\, Earl Scruggs\, Nickel Creek\, Robert Earl Keen\, Kasey Chambers\, Del McCoury and Rodney Crowell as well as an appearance on “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” and a music video on CMT for their hit single\, “Man Over”. She also performed on NPR’s “Mountain Stage\,” appeared on the Grand Ole Opry and performed on PBS’s “SoundStage.” In 2006\, Robinella was nominated for “Emerging Artist of the Year” at the Americana Music Awards and released her fourth album\, “Solace for the Lonely”\, on Dualtone Records in Nashville. \nBut then life\, as it has a tendency to do\, threw a few curveballs her way. She became a mom and a couple of years later\, she and her husband/musical partner split up with a new record almost completed. Exhausted and somewhat disillusioned with the industry and its promises\, it was time to regroup\, redefine and get back to her roots. So she returned to her home\, the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains\, and got back in touch with what she truly wanted – love\, family\, friendship\, music\, art\, truth. \nWith that comes her latest release\, “Fly Away Bird”\, her most mature work. However\, within the melancholy and touches of sadness there is not true despair. For such a voice — that dazzling\, warm\, bright-as-summer-sunshine soprano — to even communicate it would most likely defy certain laws of emotional physics. No\, instead\, this album\, beneath the disappointments\, she is brimming with optimism — with hope. You can feel it\, and even more important than that\, you believe — because she believes\, and because her music is so honest and so genuine and so forthright that you just can’t help but knowing that this is an artist who still finds life to be magical.
