1-day fundraiser for critical equipment.
Here's how to help WDVX...

WDVX Equipment Drive

Pledge now or read on for more information.

WDVX transmitter was struck by lightning in May 2010. We were off the air for five days, except for limited local broadcasting. WDVX has been awarded an equipment grant to replace the transmitter. Our grant award covers 75% of the purchase price. WDVX must raise the rest.

WDVX is holding a one day capital campaign WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 25, 2010 to raise the matching amount of the grant and to purchase other needed equipment.

This drive will fund two efforts: the Cross Mountain Transmitter Project is the priority need and the second need is for studio support.

Priority #1: Purchases in the Cross Mountain Transmitter Project:
This project will enable WDVX to improve its sound by moving its antenna to a taller tower and directing more signal into problem spots in our coverage area.

• A new transmitter - $12,000*

• A stainless steel, two-bay antenna that will stand up to the harsh atmospheric conditions on Cross Mountain. $2800*

• RF Transmission line $400*

• RF Surge suppressor $100*

• The grant also will cover the cost of a tower crew, which will install the new antenna on a taller tower. In recent years, radio operators, pager services, a UHF- TV station, and others have installed communications equipment on Cross Mountain that creates interference. The move to the new tower will place our antenna above the clutter thereby eliminating historic, chronic distortion. This, combined with a two bay antenna with an electrical beam tilt, should give us more penetration to the valley and better listener coverage.

[*These are approximate costs; final bids for the project have not been awarded]

Priority 2: Studio Equipment

• A new CD player - to replace the Denon 4000 (faithful, but old) that always gets stuck and causes a lot of listener comments. New Denon D-4500 or similar $635*

• A computer - We hope to incorporate live assist software by this fall to play rebroadcasts of The Blue Plate Special, Tennessee Shines, and most overnight programming. A new computer will replace the obsolete one currently in the control room. $700*

• Recording software will enable shows to be recorded and played back at another time and for announcers to listen to their programs. Right now we're looking at Skimmer or ProFiler . An older computer will be repurposed to run this software- $900*

• Communications support for Cross Mountain - this project is still being defined. It will probably involve a new studio to transmitter link (STL) and a backup generator, so this is just a deposit on what will probably be a much larger project. $1000*

• Cables to connect the station's production room to the main control room. This will enable us to continue broadcasting if the main control room is out of service. $300*

• ''Studio Classic'' Waves plug-ins: we currently borrow EQ and compression equipment for the production of the Blue Plate Special. This software will enable us to produce better sound and better recordings of the Blue Plate. $1300* We'll still need some quality, professional grade monitors.
